My mom's dog, Lady, is going in for surgery tomorrow. She's having anal gland surgery done. Anybody ever had this done on their dogs? Mom is really worried. Lady is her baby. I have to take her down in the morning and drop her off on the way to work. I heard it is very hard of them but she was having so much trouble. She was just miserable. Mom or I would take her to the vets to be squeezed and two days later she started scooting again. She always looked raw. I know this will be better for her in the long run but it's hard thinking that she'll be in pain for a little while. If you could, please keep her in your prayers.

My Dixie has anal gland problems too! I express them myself though about every 6 or 7 days. So far no need for surgery. My son thinks this is the most disgusting part of owning a dog. I keep telling him it's really not that bad once you have done other things for them!
Prayers are being offered for Lady to have a successful surgery and mom to have comfort in knowing her baby will be okay! It is hard when they go in for anything!

I've posted on the topic of "anal glands" a few
times before. My vet routinely offers & encourages anal gland removal whenever the dog
is spayed or neutered.(usually at 6-8 Mos).
I don't know how difficult it might be for an
older dog ; but hope all goes well for your Mom's
dog. Will keep her in my prayers. Liz.

Poor Lady...I sure hope that this surgery gives her some relief and that her recovery is swift and free of complications. If your mom is anything like some of us, she will probably be taking this worse than Lady.

Thank you all. I knew I could count on you. I felt so bad for her when I left her this morning. I went to mom's to pick her up and she was her usual all excited run all over the house self. I said, oh, you poor girl, you have no idea what you're going to go through today, do you? My mom was crying so hard. I tried to reassure her but my mom is too emotional. When I got to the Vet's I had to stand in the waiting room and wait my turn. Lady did not want to be there. She kept clawing at the exit door and trying to push it open with her nose. The assistant asked me if I was sure that she (mom) wanted to do this. She (assistant) said that it is very painful for the dog. I feel so bad for Lady but I think she'll be better off in the long run. We get to call at 1:00 to see if she's okay. I think I'll call because I don't know if mom would handle it if anything happened. I'll keep you posted.

She made it!!! I can pick her up after 4:30. She'll tell me about the follow up when I pick her up. My mom is sooo happy she made it. There was a dog beside Lady that looked just like her. We were joking about switching the dogs surgeries. When I called mom and said, you know how we were joking about the wrong surgeries. Guess what? There was dead silence on the phone and she said, they didn't. I just chuckled and said, got ya!! I don't think she was amused. :p

Good that everything went well. Now all we got to do is get Lady through the next couple days which I imagine will be the worst. Poor little Lady Butt.

Thank you all. Lady is home but the recovery is ugly. The pain pills keep her pretty droggy but she occasionally whines from pain. It's sad. Mom has to keep a diaper on her. When mom takes it off, Lady immediately starts to scott across the floor. I don't know if she's itchy or if the swelling feels like there's something stuck and she's trying to get it off. Lady gets the stiches out in two weeks so I keep telling mom that this is only temporary. Soon the pain will be gone and Lady will never be uncomfortable in that area again. Of course, it's hard wathching our babies hurt when we're the ones that scheduled and had the surgery. Mom has some guilt to work through with that, but I honestly feel it will be better for Lady in the long run.
In the meantime, Lady is getting pretty spoiled. She's being handfed and receiving lots of cuddles.

Happy Lady is home but sorry she is having so much pain. In the long run she will be more comfortable - she needs all the spoiling she can get.

Just a note to say that Lady is still in my thoughts

deserves special smooches for being such a trooper !!!

I am so sorry to hear that Lady is hurting. I remember what I had to go through with Graham's orthopedic surgery to fuse his ankle bones and it was so hard, to say the very least. He would just stare at me and cry, only stopping when he was asleep. It's something I hope to never go through again, and something that I feel so much empothy towards any one else experiencing it.
Get well, Lady, and please, please stop crying :(

Oops, somehow overlooked the question, tats. Lady is doing okay. She still isn't able to tell when she has to go, so there are "little presents" around the house for mom. I'm hoping that the vet didn't do any permanent damge to any nerves. She goes in Thursday to get the staples out. We'll find out more then. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for checking in! I don't have any experience with this procedure. Hopefully Lady's just not feeling quite right down there yet. Let us know what the doctor says!! Love and lots of hugs to Lady girl!!:)

The vet assistant said that Lady has a beautiful butt. What a thing to be excited about, huh? :o My mother is not the type to ask any questions so that's all I know. Don't know if the "little presents" will continue, don't know if there was any damage to any nerves or anything else. You know, if you don't ask they won't tell. I think my mom likes living in a state of confusion.
