View Full Version : New update on my Katie girl.

After the vet called me this morning, I had to go and see my Katie girl for myself. Boy did the tears ever flow when they brought her to me. I just held her in my arms and just didn't want to let her go. I could see that my poor baby girl was scared from being there and not knowing what is happening to her. Broke my heart.:(
This is the latest update on her.
After my vet consulted with a specialist, it is confirmed that Katie did have a small stroke. There is a slight improvement on her right side. Her right front leg is not spastic anymore, by this I mean that it is not tucked under her sticking out anymore, but the paw is still curled under. She still cannot stand or walk properly, but is able to make it into her litter box. She can eat on her own, but they help her a bit by finger feeding her. He said that he doesn't usually give out his personal opinion, but he would like to give her at least another 4-5 days, because seeing the slight improvement in her after just 2 days, gives him some hope.
He also spoke with the other vet, who knows me as well, and they are keeping the cost down, with her treatments, to a minimum and I will be able to make payments by installments.
He said that he will be gone til Wednesday and by seeing her after that, will really let him know if there is a chance of her recovering from this. Of course I can call every day to see how she is doing.
IF she is still the same way as I saw her today, then I will have to make a decision that we all hate to make, but I do HAVE to give my Katie girl that chance.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your prayers. They do help.

I feel so bad about this. Poor Katie! It is enouraging though that she has had some improvement, lets hope and pray that her improvement continues. Does she seem to be in any pain? Poor thing, I bet she is scared and missing her Meowmie! Hoping and praying that she will be able to come home to you soon and that you won't have any decision to make.

Oh Lorraine I'm so sorry. Was this caused from the anesthesia? I will be anxiously awaiting all your updates.

To answer some of your questions, first off, Kim, I pray that you are right and I can't believe that this has happened either. I have been a basket case since it happened. Crying all the time, can hardly eat, feeling guilty for putting her through this. I'm sure most of you know the drill.
Furrykidsmother, the vet feels that she is not in pain and I didn't sense that she was either when I saw her this morning. He said that cats usually don't eat when they are in pain and she lets them know that she is hungry. She gets very vocal.
K & L, yes this did happen from the anesthesia. The vet said that it is very rare that this happens and it is something that they cannot forsee.
Thank you all for your continued prayers and hugs. They truly help.

I am glad to hear that it doesn't sound as if she is in pain and I am glad that she is eating. Good signs! C'mon Katie you will get better, we know you will!

Oh Lorraine, I'm so sorry. :( However, I'm encouraged that there is a little bit of improvement, and hope and pray that she will improve everyday until the vet gets back.
I know she is in the best place possible for them to keep an eye on her, but I just think she would be so much more comfortable and peaceful at home, which could only encourage any healing. Since this does seem to be an immediate life threatening thing, is there any chance you can bring her home for the next couple of days? I know I would be a basket case if she were home, but I'd also be a basket case with her at the vet's..... However, I know you and your vet will do whatever is best for little Katie girl.
The other good news is that she's hungry and actually lets them know that. That is always an ecouraging sign.

I was also going to ask if it would be better for you to bring her home.. the stress of being there could slow down her healing maybe? At home where she is comfortable with Mommie, I think she would feel so much better. If it is no longer life threatening... wouldn't that be the best thing for her?
Also, in humans, they want physical therapy to start as soon as possiable.. maybe that needs to be started to keep those muscles strong and to remind them what they are suppose to do?
If in the end, you may have to make that horriable decision, wouldn't it be better to give her this chance if the vet thinks bringing her home won't hurt her.... Is all they are doing is observing her right now? The peace and security of her being at home may help her healing speed up where you can comfort her, support her, hand feed her if you have to and just love the dickens out of her.
She is seperated from those she loves and the things she is use to, her body won't respond like it should and she is scared to death. Sometimes the other fur animals they are use to are a great comfort and could help with her healing as much as you could...
(theses are just my own thoughts and if you first instincts are not to do it, then don't)

Yes, I understand where you are coming from T & P's Mom and Laura's Babies and I truly appreciate what you are saying, but the reason they are keeping her in under close observation, is to watch for any signs if the embolism (blood clot) starts to move to another area that would require immediate action. They don't know if this would happen or if it will dissolve in time with the medication they are giving her. I'm sorry, I should have mentioned this before.
Believe me when I say, that if I could have her here with me, I would.

So your vets have someone there 24/7? That is great if they do not many regular vets do it's just the ER places.

Poor little Katie! My heart is breaking for both of you. I hope that she will come out of it soon! It is so hard to see our babies when they are sick.
My Tabby had a mini-stroke a few years ago, when she was 15. I could just tell that something was wrong with her when we woke up in the morning. She just layed on the bed and wouldn't move. I rushed her to the vet, and he noticed that she was lethargic, but by the time we left, she was walking, slowly.
I stayed home with her that day, and after a few more days, she was more like herself.... and now she is fine!
I hope that this gives you some hope! I am sending lots of hope, prayers and well wishes that she continues to get better soon!

Yes Craftlady, someone is there during the night to keep an eye on the more sickly ones. That's why years ago I had picked this vet hospital.
Donnaj, that is encouraging, thank you for sharing that.
Thank you Gary for sending your Cat Angels to help Katie through this.
Thank you again everyone as it is very comforting to me, knowing that you all understand what I am going through and really care and I don't have to second guess my decision to wait longer to see if she will come through this. I won't even mention what some of my friends have said, it's not worth it and I'm sure you can guess.
Come on my sweet Katie, you have to pull through this. You still have more years to go on being my velcro girl.
It would be so much easier if you could explain to her what's going on. My cat wouldn't eat at all when he had to stay at the vet's, I had to feed him every day myself. Plenty of positive thoughts going your way and hope that Katie is home soon.
