View Full Version : Don't 'count' on me! A boss story

RICHARD

If my boss had brains she would be dangerous!

Check this out.

We report the number of hours that an operating room is being used.
The reports help spot trends and help us budget for equipment, staff and WHO gets to use the room.

I used to report the hours until the new sys admin came in. She took this job over and is now in charge of reporting the times.

On her last report she gave a total of 269 hours for a two week period.

The usual totals are around 320-340 hours. When the Financial Dude saw this he started
to call all around to find out why the total was so low.

They came to me and asked me to check into the report.....so I took every paper and totaled up the times.
BY HAND....I came up with 323 hours...

They then tell me that is fine and dandy but they HAVE to know WHY...
I find out that there is one day that hasn't been totaled.....it adds up to the 60 hours that are missing. I get the lady working on
it to finish with the day........

My SA then hands the Department Boss a report that she has done and miraculously she comes up with
321 hours.....but the DB wants to know why she reported 269 then changes it to 321.....she has no answer for that.....

I call Financial Dude and ask him to send me a copy of that report.

While I wait, the SA runs a report and sees that the gal put the missing data in today She doesn't print her name out on the report, just the date!
So she TRIES TO SAY THAT I AM THE ONE THAT put those numbers today to change the totals.

I get a report from Finance Dude and It shows a HUGE ZERO where a number should be. (This imbecile runs the report and instead of questioning that zero she passes
it off as the correct total.) I walk the report over to the DB and tell her that IF I had seen this
zero I could have told them what was wrong with the reports in two seconds and I would not have wasted two days trying to find out what was the matter
with it..

The SA goes on the offensive and says, "I asked you if all the info was ready...."

But she forgot that I told her to ask my co-workers what days they were working on.

At the end of this discussion the DB asks if my "323" number is good to send out.....

Get this....

The SA tells her no, that I am off by 1.8 hours and that data isn't any good!

Sounds to me like they need to come up with a easier, less confusing way to keep up with those numbers....

I got this in my email this morning, from the SA..

An OPR is an Operative Procedure Record and a "closer" is the person who
finishes and checks the record. The fields that she refers to is the minimum amount of info that she needs to run a report.....
----------------------------------------

Please email me the dates that cannot be completed for September by the end
of today. For any reason the OPR cannot be entered with the fields listed
above must be the last consecutive days of the month. For example,
September 1st - 30th, if any days incomplete, it must be the 30th and 29th,
it cannot have the 29th incomplete and 30th completed. All closers should
work together to have this done by the end of today.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

--------------------------

I did have one question!

Can I have a list of ALL your college instructors???

I didn't get into any trouble....And I think that the 'bean counters' in the cafeteria might be able to do a better job up here!

I heard that employees "rise to the level of their incompetence".

This gal is gonna need a clearance from air traffic control soon.

Aghhh! What would it be like if everybody was competent
and a job ran smoothly all of the time? ;)

Please be sure to email the reports to your direct manger and I on a weekly
and monthly basis regardless if any dates are missing from KXXX. Please
reply this email or call me to confirm all of the required fields are
entered in KXXX for the entire month of September immediately. If there
are any days without the required fields or any days for September with
OPRs not signed off, the reports need to be submitted immediately as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

She MUST have been in the Military!

Suggestion:

PRINT out a copy of some of her "better" memos
- leaving OFF your name/address -
and slip the copies onto HER Boss' Desk!

She could not have been in the military. She would have shot herself looking down the barrel to see if her rifle was loaded.

She ALREADY sends a copy to her boss!

Before I go on....

She is a smart gal, It's the common sense part that has her bollixed up.

I was so frustrated with her the other day I told her she reminded me of a car, with no tires, trying to make it up a hill....

She asked me, "Is that what you think?"

I told her, "NO, I know IT!!"  :o

Give me a break! The thing I've found is the more book smarts they get, the less common sense they have. I feel your pain. I also sent you a pm.

R U sure we don't work at the same company .......

If not the people we work for went to the same institution of higher learning.... :(

I had to finally tell the Huge Boss* that I found her emails to be cryptic.
-------------------------------------

We had a meeting and she pulls out a report that she had put together that would show where we were in reporting process, the Huge Boss took it out of her hand, glanced at it and said to her, "these reports are of NO use to me..."
The HB then slid the paper, back across the desk AT her.

The HB was BRUTAL to her. We now have to report weekly, instead of Biweekly.

Why? Because she took it upon herself to revamp the reports and calculate the values down to the minute...

I have modified my report to reflect the information you
need. The report numbers are sum by day, pay period and month. This format
shows more accurate OR hours and minutes. In previous format reports the
hours are converted to a number then converted back to hours, some minutes
are lost in the conversion for the cases and these value adds up at the end
of the month.

The reports she 'modified' have been in use for 17 years....and are used at 12
facilities in the state. Needless to say, that didn't last long.

I have noticed that in the recent emails being circulated, people have started to work 'around' her...

Some people were made for some jobs. This job ain't for her.

*I have a boss, big boss and huge boss and super huge boss, no reflection on them, it's the position they hold.

I would be livid  She was probably trying to make herself look good. Guess she got a huge surprise. I'm glad he roasted her butt. However, as usual, it's the peons that get the brunt of it. Sorry you'll be having more meetings. Why in the world is she a supervisor? It really chaps my hide to hear of people like this making a big salary(probably has a take home car) and can't even do a half as*ed job of it. I'm sure it made your day.

Update?

We have had two "meetings" with the big boss-

I am starting to feel badly for this gal.

To be THAT computer saavy and not have any common sense is really scary.

I wait until she leaves in the afternoon so I am assured she is out of the parking structure when I leave.
