I am going to get a cat because we are moving out to the country and we want it to kill the mice but that means it will have to live outside is there anything special i should do to make sure it is ok while it is out there.

The cat does not have to live outside to kill the mice - is not the goal keeping your home mouse-free? Cat should be inside, keeping the mice out, snagging any mice that dare come in!

Well, the cat is happiest inside, but should you need to keep them outside, it's desperately important to keep their shots up to date, their flea treatments on them, and they have to have a warm, dry place to sleep and plenty of fresh food and water. And of course, LOTS of attention and love.

If you can't keep them inside exclusively, then at least consider letting them be indoor/outdoor. They can come in, eat and relax and have cuddle time with you.

I agree that a kitty shouldn't be left outside all of the time. Especially out in the country there are many animals that could easily kill your cat. I grew up in the country and we had lots of animals that could harm cats such as possums, coyotes, bobcats and stray dogs. At the very least bring your kitty indoors at night time.

Very good point.

Just a few dangers to cats who are outside.........

Cars, wild animals, people who might steal your cat, hunters, pesticides, anti-freeze, fleas and ticks carrying diseases, traps, the weather extremes, other cats (who might be carrying diseases), worms and bacterial parasites, dogs.......and loneliness.
You cannot keep your kitty safe from all of these. :(

We had a mouse problem the year before we got Allen. DESPERATE mouse problem. He never once stepped paws outside, and we never again had a mouse problem after he came.

To me, there are just too many threats to a cat outside. I would never risk it. They can still do a great job mousing and never leave the inside of the house.

Also, please make sure the cat is neutered and microchipped.
