View Full Version : Are paint fumes hazardous to birds?

My mom and her friend just got a new house. They plan on repainting a couple of rooms and as some of you may know, they own a Nanday Conure and a Cockatiel. I was wondering if I should take the birds for a couple of days, or would they be ok in a different room with ventiliation? Thank you.

you should take the birds for a few days.Birds can't handle chemicals like that.

As long as they are out of the room with the new paint and have good ventilation, they should be fine. :)

I think its best that the birds leave the house until it is completely aired out. The fumes are bad for them.

As everyone else has said, let the house air out before they go in it. It better to be safe than sorry!

No, not necesarily. My friend tried this ... painting a room in the house, keeping the door closed, and putting her bird in a room all the way across the house with the window cracked. The bird died. Not worth the risk.

Whoops, I'm sorry for the wrong information! Thats just what I've been told and have read.

Most definitely!! Birds lungs are SO much smaller than that of a humans and will die a LOT faster! Why do you think miners back in the day took a canary down into the mines with them? If the canary died, that meant there were chemicals in the air that were toxic and they needed to get out.
