I hope she's already back... but cats can go awol and return after quite a long time (one of mine once disappeaared for almost a year, but that's another story.) They can be very clever at finding food and water as long as the weather is reasonable.
Have you called the local shelters and vet offices? Keep calling everyday to check for new arrivals. You don't want to miss her because a message did not get passed.
Putting food and water outside your home may lure her back.
It is possible if she did not see her animal friend's death that she has gone looking for her friend. If you have a blanket or crate the other pet used putting that out where she could smell it might help lure her home.
I seem to remember you had her spayed, otherwise I'd say she was off to make more babies. If her kitten is 3 monthes, she has not really forgotten her, but the tight bond to an infant is over. At that age, mom cats feel that the baby is up to hunting trips and life on their own in a safe envirnoment which you have given her. She trusts you to mind the baby and the baby to have basic skills. When she comes home, she will resume her relationships, but in her world her baby is an early teenager, not a toddler and will be treated that way.
If she lived an earlier part of her life as a free-stray or a feral she may have gone on a walk-about now that baby is old enough and will come home when she has satisfied her urge to hunt and wander.
I know you are doing all you can think of, it is so frightening when they go missing (which is why all mine live indoor lives these days). If you can walk the area at dawn and dusk when scents are best and it is quiet calling for her and listeniing for her reply you may get some results. Check culverts and bushes near the road. Hopefully she is fine and safe, but if she has been hurt she may be hiding and quiet to try to stay safe. (I've found cats this way it does not always mean disaster.)
Good luck and many prayers. Cats are good at find home.

Your words have given me hope, yes I have called every where and posted flyers in my area.
Bella has not been spayed, her appt. was on Wednesday so maybe she is in heat, The cats are all staying indoors. I did put out food just in case (thank you I never thought of that) and I've been calling her and looking.
So my fingers are crossed and all I can do is pray that she is safe. The only good thing my older male cat (Waldo) has taken over with Mia and they have become good friends.
Thank you for being on as well.

Any news? If she is unspayed, I really bet she is out "dating" and will come home to the safe nest she knows....
I hope you can keep calling the shelters etc., but as I said, I have had cats be gone for monthes and come home under their own steam... As a kid, my dear Sooty was gone for a year before coming home.
It is so frightening to have one awol..... Blessings and prayers.

Ohhhhhh wow... I am SO GLAD I saw this thread tonight. I was going to write about my missing stray REILLY. :(
Has missing fur child come home yet?
My heart is breaking for and with you.
As you all know we have 5 fur children... I also love and feed a stray that I Have named REILLY. he has gotten better at allowing me to get closer to him. he is ALWAYS in the driveway or under the deck.. or following me from a distance. Reilly has been gone for over a week. I am a wreck. :(
I ordered and my husband assembled a lovely Cedar house for him for the winter. I have stained it and it is ready and waiting for him.
I go outside ( we have almost 3 acres) many many times a day calling his name, loking for him in the woods. No Reilly.
I feel like Bella.....I am heart sick. my heart is so heavy. I don't want to think tha something has happened to him and he has crossed the Rainbow bridge.
I don;'t know what to do. h eis a stray and therefore has no ties. I have asked my 2 neighbors if they have seen him lately and they have NOT.
I came here tonight becasue thisis the one place that will not laugh at me. I love him on his terms....but I still consider him my fur son. I adore this little guy. He even let me take his picture.....sort of.
I was in tears earlier tonigh talking to a friend on aol. I have even e mailed a pet psychic but haven't received a reply yet.
You all love these fur childrenand I know that you won't laugh at me. he isn't "Just a cat".. he is MY fur son.. in his way.... on his terms. I love him and I want him to come home. He matters! he matters to me... if to no one else he does to me. Oh how I wish he could hear me.

I remember when my little Peek-a-Boo got loose, she is an indoor kitty, and she was missing for a week. She stayed really close to home, and luckily, God Blessed her with a LOUD meow, and we found her in our neighbors shed.
Don't worry, you will find you little kitty..I will be praying for you until you find her.

My Sister's cat is missing too. You said you live in a town? Can you ask your neighbors to check their basements? I lost my cat for 1 week (this was years ago). Come to find out, she was in our neighbors basement.
I so hope you find your kitty. Please keep us posted. I will send good thoughts and positive vibes your way.

Good Morning All,
This has been an eventful few days. Several days ago, I was at my wits end worrying about my little stray "Reilly". I had driven around, looking for him, asked neighbors, went to the county "shelter" and I use that term very loosely. Found out that the only way cats are brought to them is if they are dumpbed, surrendered, hit by a car etc. THey are Free roam and cannot be picked up if seen by the animal control people.
My last straw.. I emailed a well known pet psychic/animal communicator Diane Roadcap. I had had a private reading wither last year which was too incredible for words. She lives here in Northern Va... and is absolutely wonderful. I emailed her and told her about Reilly. She called me Wednesday. I had prepared myself that Reilly had crossed the RB. I just knew it. First words out of her mouth..."He is alive and well". I asked her to repeat that, I wasn't sure I heard her correctly. She went thru the entire reading, told me about Reilly and said that he plans to return, but had to leave for awhile.
Diane proved to be rtight on with the first reading.. but this one....I was a little hesitant to believe her.
Yesterday morning, I got up.. went to the window... looked out.. and there he was sitting in the driveway waiting for his breakfast. :)
I ran downstairs opened the pantry, grabbed Fancy Feast and ran outside. My boys were looking at me like MOM!! HERE! WE'RE HERE! I must have looked like a simpleton.. babbling to Reilly. But sure enough he is back. In fact.. he was here several times yesterday.
Diane had told him that he had better get home becasue the season was changing.. also that I loved him and was so worried... Now you all can say it is a mere coincidence...but I have had a reading with this woman before.....seems strange that 24 hours after I spoke with her he shows up.
He looks good...but I think something happeend to him....maybe he was shut up someplace becasue he is back to his very skittish self. I have to start all over again with regaining his trust.
I don't care...my wayward stray fur son has come home.
Blessings,
Deb mommacat

I can't get that close to him... I Am not sure he would be a good inside kitty. I have a feeling he's always been outside.. as much as I hate that thought if I can regain his trust... get him to the vet.. get him neutered, tests, shots, microchipped, etc.. then I would feel better.
Blessings,

Free-living cats wander.... I am glad Reilly came back. If you live in a relatively safe environment, he will probably continue to come and go and have a home with you. Outdoor cats have lives that humans only share part of. I grew up with outdoor cats and the neighboring farms barncats coming over for tending and love. Bless you for loving him on his own terms.
These days all my cats live indoors and there are no strays letting me know they are around (the weather-proof shelters are still on my land, but only a family of (wild) bunnies lives in them at the moment. My county adopted the law that it is legal to shoot free-roaming cats, and, as I have a neighbor that is nasty, I no longer put out food unless a cat is letting me know he/she is there and then I begin the taming process. Being a free-roaming cat is no longer an even relatively safe way to live here any more.
There are many dangers out there for cats, but many joys too...
For those who have wanderers, never give up. My dear Sooty was gone on "business" for a year, came home (two-homed for a time) and then lived the remainder of a long life with me. Others used to only winter with me or only show up if they were sick or hurt.... funny how they knew.
Good wishes for all who wander and for those who offer comfort and homes.

Dear BC,
Blessings and light be with you. Thank you so much for your wisdom.
Do you live in Minnesota? I think they have a law that allows cats to be shot/killed. :(
It started raining yesterday and hasn't stopped. I was worried about Reilly's whereabouts....since he just returned where was he in this torrential rain. I have his new Cedar house all ready.. It has several coats of stain on it. I placed it on two pieces of plywood so it's off the ground. I was at the SPCA today getting ready for our Yard Sale... when I got home, I saw Reilly run out from under my husband's truck. I called his name and he stopped and looked at me. I grabbed his bowl.. washed it out.. and gave my baby fresh water and food and put it on the plywood wher ehis house is... how much more of a hint is that? I went inside.. came back out, and he acted like he was still hungry. I grabbed another can as he stillhad some dried food left...I touched the inside of the house an dit was still dry.....how can I get him to use the house and to know that it is for him, and not the raccoons, possum etc? I blest his house, cleansed it with white sage and infused it with Reiki.
BC.. I adore this little guy. My heart breaks thinking of him out in the rain and cold. My 5 fur children are safe inside now.. after being adopted from our SPCA, and having led lives in hell before being rescused by our SPCA.
If I cannot bring Reilly inside, as he seems to be a free spirit.. what can I do to make his life more comfortable? You seem to have a special afinity and knowledge for free roamers.. I love him.. and went thru my own personal hell these past 2 weeks thinking something had happened to him....what can I do to make his life more comfortable?
Blessings,
Deb

Put lots of nice fresh hay inside the dog house, no blankets because they tend to get wet. Hopefully when it gets cool, he will use it.
I have two of my own feral cats, that I adore. I would love to bring them inside, but they will only let me get so close. They've been here for two years. They were spayed/neutered last year after I spent weeks trying to trap them. They climb across my fence, along the porch and onto the family room roof, and look inside the kitchen and dining room windows.
They have 3 dog houses - including one outside the front door. And it took them a while, but they now use two of them. We shovel the front of the house first during snow, and my husband blows paths through the yard for them.
Just give it some time, and be patient. Cats are amazing survivors! And extremely smart.
Here is Fuzzy looking in the dining room and talking to Max.

Hi Dallas,
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
How often should I change the straw in Reilly's little cedar house? Should I use hay or straw or does it matter? I have also thought of putting straw around the house under the deck so it's not as muddy for him. I have to regain his trust after his disappearance of almost 2 weeks. I adore him Dallas.. and I worry about him being outside especially when the weather turns cold.
I haven't seen him today...but I htink he knows that I love him and I am here for him. I have seen him walk on the deck and look inside at my fur sons. It breaks my heart Dallas.
Did you trap your wandering fur child or did you gain enough trust to pick him up and able to take him to the vet?I Am so afraid that if I trap him and once all taken care of and brought back here.. he'd run off and never come back. He is SO SKITTISH.I had made 5 steps forward and now have gone 3 steps back since he disappeared anr returned.
THank you so much for your helpful input. Andagain does it matter if I use hay or straw?
Blessings,
Deb

If you trap him and release him in your yard, he'll still hang around. I've done this with more than 20 cats over the last 2 years and they always come back.
As an example, there is Louise. She is a calico that I trapped in late February. I had her spayed, shots done and released her back into my front yard. There were several others that I did around the same time. None have left yet.
I have a pen on the side of the house that opens into the cat's room. My seven have been inside for 3 years and not one has escaped. But Louise has been brought into the house (twice) and found a way out of the pen. Last night she ate dinner in the cat room.
Guess who was on my front porch for breakfast this morning?
I feed them all at the same time every morning and night and slowly reach out to touch them. I can pet them all while they eat now. But I still can't pick them up. Louise spends her days on the porch and loves a tail scritching.
I worry every time one of them mises a mealtime. It's the price you pay for having outside cats. And why I'm moving as many as I can inside.
They now come running when I shake the Temptations bag.

Thank you so much for your helpful hints.
I think Barn Cat had suggested that I use hay in his house instead of blankets... Can I use Straw instead of hay? Does it make any difference?
Thanks,
deb

Straw or hay is fine. It's really just for insulation - it will keep him warm as the weather turns cold. Change it when it gets dirty - that just depends on the cat.
What I did with all my ferals was trap them, take them to the shelter for spay/neuter. The shelter keeps them for a week, to ensure they are ok. Once home - they get a huge dog crate for another week inside the house. Then I take the crate outside and let them go. They take off for the hills - but are back by next morning for breakfast. :p

So glad Reilly came back. There is lots of hope for Bella, I think. It would be exactly the time for her to be back in heat, so she is probably out and about with potential "husbands." Our cat Mustard, the family cat when I was growing up, disappeared three different times and returned safely. The third time, he was gone for over two weeks, and we were sure we would never see him again - we called and searched everywhere - but one day he just showed up at the front door. My cat Sadie - the first cat I ever had after leaving home - disappeared in Philadelphia for a week, too, and I was positive she had met a bad end - but one morning, she tore a hole through the screen coming back home! I have never been more ecstatic than I was that morning to see her - she was the worse for wear, with some injuries, but nothing terribly serious, and she ended up fine. Good luck with Bella - I hope she comes home just fine.

THank you all so much for your suggestions concerning my stray fella Reilly.
I am home tomorrow and will put the straw under the deck for him. A friend suggested that hemay not be using the cedar House becasue if "trapped" by another animal.. he would have no way to escape. I'll put the straw out for him as well.

So it took so long for me to get back on the 'puter...I'm so pleased he's home. It sounds as if you are doing everything you can. He may not go in the house until the smells mellow enough that he cn percieve his surroundings and until he trusts that he won't be trapped. (In something is a big leap for a cat if he isn't feeling secure.) If the roof is flat enough you might put a treat up there when he sees you do it. On is not as scary as in and it will get him used to things.
It sounds as if you are doing everything to make him happy. It may be that one day he decides to "come in" and that would be happy for you both... In the meantime you are loving him and that is the best gift of all.
Bless you for caring for him.
(I do believe too that Bella will be home... Probably with a tired look and a long story....)
