When I volunteer during open hours I work with the cats showing them to the adopters, keeping them groomed and nails cut. I was told I couldn't clean litter boxes though. During after hours our volunteers get the crappy, yet important work of dishes and laundry. We wash every food and water dish daily and also all the blankets from each kennel. It can get pretty nasty but its worth it. When waiting for laundry to get done I got to bathe dogs that are going home and also I got to bring clean blankets back into the rooms with mothers and puppies. For the most part we choose what work we volunteer to do, but sometimes something comes up and we do different work.

That sounds nasty and fun at the same time. i love helping animals that can't help themselves. i especially feel bad for the senoir cats and dogs. they most likely will be put to sleep. :( i hope i get to choose what work i do. thanks for telling me!

i work on on the weekends we show our dogs and cat's at petsmart and i love working there because are humane is a non-kill, warning working with the animals, you might end up taking them home, also it depend on what kind of shelter your working at the one your working might have animals beside dogs and cats they probally will have rodents and some even have ducks, our other adoption center that i don't work at have a chickens up for adoption

I volunteer at the animal shelter near me :) I usually go and walk dogs, start teaching them leash manners and basic commands. I also talk to people interested in adopting and try to help them find the best suitable dog. In the cat room I usually cut toenails or clean out cat boxes and refill water. Good luck, it is really rewarding work and trust me, you get attached to everybody!

My 13 year old daughter Melissa also does volunteer work, she attends the adoptions at the shopping malls and simply loves it, getting to handle all the kitties and seeing them get homes, don't be too put off by being allergic to cats, I am also and have been for 18 years or so, never owning a kitty in all that time, but as you can see in my siggy below I am now the proud Meowmie of Ash and Lexie, i still have the allergy but by putting myself amongst them I have de-sensitised myself somewhat and now I can tolerate the allergy, besides I could not bare to live without my Puddy Tats.:)
Hey good on you for doing volunteer work you will be well rewarded., just being able to help and see animals get homes etc.

thanks :) as you can see, i do own a kitty too. at my dad's, but she is a barn cat. my mom wont let me get a kitty because i am starting to get astma (sp?) from the farm at my dads. so no inside kitty for me :( but i love oreo!! anyways... i am really excited to volenteer there, it'll make me feel good for the dogs and cats to get good homes. but heart breaking for the animals that are put to sleep.

What exactly is a barn cat,? we don't use that term here, I gather it is a cat that lives in the barn, and is kept to catch the mice, not exactly a domestic pet? is that right?

well, not really. we bought her to be a barn cat- catch mice. but she is too tame to be an outside cat. she is so sweet. we brang her inside, and she loved it at first. but after a while, she started trying to shoot out the door to get outside. she knocked over all our plants, and peed on my dads bed. she has been outside ever since she was born, so she likes it outside better. we bring her in at night, and let her out in the day.

but she does catch mice when she gets outside. *nasty* she doesnt eat it cuz we feed her enough everyday.

thats cool! i do it right after school. this weekend me and my dad are going to an auction to get some peacocks. we rescue bunnies there, and find them new homes. we cant get anymore bunnies, because ours rabbit had babies. and we only rescue in the spring and summer, because we dont have enough money to keep too many animals over the winter.

today was my first day at the humane society. it was soooooooooooooooo fun!!!! i had to clean cages, and i acctually didn't mind it. i got to play with the kittens. i walked two dogs that semmed gentle. a terrier/basset hound mix. too cute!!! it looked like benji, but with a long body. it was sooo sweet. the sign on the kennel said 'sweet as honey'. (thats the color of the dog) and a pitbull/lab (maybe boxer) cross. i cant believe it, that dog was SO well behaved!! it didn't jump on me when i got in the kennel, and it doesn't pull at all on the leash. it was only a year and a half too. that dog will be so adoptable. both of them will. the other dogs were labs and a german sheperd.

this is the two dogs i am talking about. my favorites. the pic of the pit bull/lab is dark so its hard to see the pretty brindle colors. her name is matilda. the other terrier/basset crosses name is gaby. they are much cuter in real life!!
