View Full Version : How big should the crate be?

I'm only a week into crate training & toilet training and we had the a wee in the crate today. She had been outside to pee only 2 hours earlier! Maybe she had heaps of water or something. She is 15 weeks old.

I have a crate with a divider in it. I know that there is only supposed to be enough room for the dog, and no extra room....so the dog would not poop or pee in the 'extra space'. But if I make it only big enough for her to turn around in, then she can not lay down unless she kinda curls up a bit (she seems comfortable).

So my qeustionn is should I leave it like that...or make it big enough so she can sleep without curling up at all. Given that she peed in it tonight, after only 2 hours since her previous pee, I'm guessing I make a bit bigger than it should be.

Generlal note: She seems to pee alot

Maybe she needs to be taken out more often especially after drinking a lot of water. Try making the crate a wee bit smaller and see how it goes, it could be that the crate is too large to be effective for crate training. Or it could have been a one time thing where your dog really needed to go and you need to be more aware of its potty habits.

Glad it's working out well now.
Just so you know, the crate should only be big enough for her to stand, turn around & lay down in. No extra room.
