Besides English... do you speak any other foreign language?

Another boring thread....

I speak Italian and English fluently.
Some Spanish and some French.

I wish I would have continued on and studied German too. I only studied German for a few months. :( Don't remember much of it.

I wish I had known that about a week ago. There is a woman on one of my online adoption groups whose husband is in China picking up their son who is 3. She made sure her husband had words and phrases in Mandarin, and their son speaks Cantonese! They should be returning to the US this weekend, and seem to have made it through just fine.:) (My apologies for the momentary thread hijack.)

Besides German I speak English, French and Italian. I can read Spanish but when speaking I always mix it up with Italian:D

I speak just a little bit of Greek and have learned Japanese for 3 years but forgot 90% of it.

I've studied Spanish for years and am minoring in it at the university, but I'm still no where near fluent. :( I'm in especially bad shape because I haven't spoken a word of it in two years and now I'm trying to learn it again. I can read and write it pretty well though, even though my pronounciation is not very good.

When I was little I knew Lithuanian (I'm half Lithuanian). I keep trying to relearn it, but it's hard to learn a language on your own I think.

I took a German class for travel before my family's trip to Germany a couple years ago, so I can say a few select phrases, like "Ich möchte ein Zimmer für vier," so I don't think that counts at all. :)

I also feel that the United States is pretty bad as far as emphasizing foreign languages in school. It seems to me like people in other countries are fluent in a few languages, and I can only consider myself fluent in one. :(

I am impressed so many people can speak more than 1 language. I took Spanish for 2 years in high school and 1 year in college and still can't speak it. English for me. :D

Besides French, I speak English and a bit of Dutch.

Some time ago I could speak a little bit of German and Italian, but since my brain has to play with French, English and Dutch in the same time (I work in The Nerthelands, use English at work, and live in France!!), my German and Italian are completely gone!

Good, I see that alot here speak a second language.
How beautiful!

I can make out Italian, and I could live in Mexico, no problem, speaking Spanish.
And I can make out a little in Romanian, due to the Tom the Cat thread.

Give it to me, as long as it is Latin based.

That's so cool! :D Are you a first generation or perhaps even an immigrant? I'm a first generation and am glad I am. It keeps me in close touch with my heritage :>)

LOL Prechrswife, do they need any language help, now? Also, are they adopting the son? That's so sweet. My heart goes out to all the unwanted children. My mother was nearly given up, but the neighbors convinced my grandmother to keep her. Thank God!

They are adopting the little boy, and should be coming home on Saturday. I will ask about the language help and get back to you.

That's an amazing story about your mother. Thank God for those neighbors!

I speak English (of course), Urdu, some Punjabi (I understand it all but can't quite speak it well), and I know some Arabic too. I can read/write in Arabic, understand quite a bit, and speak some, BUT, I do NOT know it fluently. Spanish? Well....I know the Spanish numbers 1-10 (thanks Sesame Street), and I guess I know a few words, but that's it. LOL!

I took Spanish in grade school, I can still order in Mexican food in Spanish (my husband speaks it fluently) . Then I took French in Jr. high and 2 years in college, I've lost most of it, but still keep my French/English dictionary handy. My Mom's family were French Canadian, they used to speak French when they didn't want us kids knowing what they said!

I am an immigrant. :) Glad and proud that I can speak Cantonese fluently and also able to read and write!

Goodness! In that case, I really have to commend you! My mum immigrated when she was 20 and speaks with your stereotypical choppy-Chinese/English. It's hilarious because I'm the only one who can decipher her "language":D I've always felt bad that I couldn't read and write Chinese, though. That's one of my many regrets, LOL.

Prechrswife, I'd be glad to help with any language barriers. I'm not as fluent as Jenfer probably is, though :p
