Hi,
I am getting a beautiful dog from a high-kill shelter in WV on Thursday and NEED YOUR HELP!
He is currently located in Kingwood, WV and I need to get him to at least Youngstown (preferably Kent area) Ohio on Thursday. The shelter only does adoptions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and he is currently slated to be gassed on Friday if I cannot get to him! I'd be willing to do a transport up to one hour away from Cleveland (or the 1.5 hr drive to Erie, PA) in return.
Here's a link to his pic on petfinder:
http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=4995110
Please help! Even if he can only get to Pittsburgh, it's that much closer to me!
Thanks!

I've been known to drive to the Boonies of WV on a Rescue Run!
Tell us a litttle more about yourself and the Pup ...
* What do you know about the dog?
* Are you gong to be his FurrEver Home?
* How'd you find Pet Talk?
* Do you know someone near the Shelter to "pull" him and
get him started on his way to you?

Hi... Yes, this will be his forever home... my husband just fell in love with him. I found pettalk by just doing a search in yahoo for dog transports :-). I don't know anyone near there, but the lady said she could probably take him a short distance - I'll make sure everything is square with her before the first person gets him.
If you need any other info, let me know! :-)
here's the message I've made up in the meantime
PERMISSION TO CROSS POST!!!!!!!
Hi!
I am adopting a dog from a high-kill GAS shelter and need emergency transport on Thursday to get him to Cleveland, Ohio! He will be gassed on Friday if I do not get to him in time!
Basically what I mostly need is the first legs of the trip – I can drive as far as necessary, but ANY distance closer to me is better than having to drive all the way down!
Here are the legs:
1. Kingwood, WV (the shelter) to Waynesburg, PA
2. Waynesburg, PA to Pittsburgh, PA
3. Pittsburgh, PA to Youngstown, OH
4. Youngstown, OH to (near) Kent, Ohio (basically the I-80 & I-480 interchange).
I can definitely meet near Kent, or further if necessary.
He is 1 1/2yo, NOT neutered. I don’t know the status of his shots, as they don’t do any vet care there, but he has been dewormed. I have been told he will ride fine in the car without a crate.
The adoption hours for the shelter are Tuesdays (which I doubt anything could get done today) and Thursdays 9am-5pm. I get out of work typically at 4pm, but I am able to leave really at any time depending on the time the transport will get to Kent.
Please e-mail me at
[email protected]. I really want to get this dog out of the shelter!
He will come and have a forever home at my house with my husband and I, our guinea pigs and our other rescue dog (who gets along great with other dogs and is a beagle mix himself).
Here is a link to the boy we want to bring home: http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=4995110
I am willing to do a transport in return for your help! I can drive up to one hour in any direction from Cleveland, Ohio (or to Erie, PA).
Thanks!

"A short distance ..."
Wonder if she thinks to "Little Washhington, PA" is
within the meaning of "short distance"??
:p
Prolly stretching her good nature - that would be about 70+ miles!
I just looked at the map again ...
I might be able to stretch it to Waynesburg, PA.
And Kent isn't THAT far the other way ...
See if he can make it to Waynesburg - and at what TIME?
I neeed to run an errand near Bridgeville, PA (off I-79) for an
hour or two - can do it going in either direction.
And check on his past history - has he EVER had shots??
He really "otta" have a Rabies shot before he travels through THREE States!

I've been trying to call for the past 1/2 hour, but I keep getting a busy signal. I don't know if they'll return my calls tomorrow, as they don't have adoption hours then, but I will make every effort to check!
If they don't know, or if he hasn't ever had a rabies shot, I will try to see if they can get that done and I'll pay for the shot - otherwise, I think I might have to take the chance? I'd gladly pay for a muzzle if that would help as well (that way no one would get bit).

AMBER - Where ARE you????
Amber -
Please READ your e-mail from me and get in touch!
Didn't take nearly as much research to FIND the Dog Warden
(Jodine, New girl on the job since March or so, SUPER Friendly)
as it did to find Butch da Dawg Ketcher in Webster County!
The Sheriff gave me her cell phone number, and she answered it! :)
The Shelter number (304-329-3461) only answers with a live person
during Visiting Hours on Tuesday and Thursday.
Jodine does NOT get her e-mails "drectly" (no puter) ...
"Another Girl" gets them (and must not pass them on too quickly).
The "Other Girl" is the one who Amber spoke with - and should not
have said "they" would drive #34 part way to his new home ...
Jodine is NOT allowed to drive a dog outta town!
We got into the Nitty-Gritty of getting ole #34 OUT of the Shelter -
Jodine really wants him OUT A.S.A.P. - she said she's got "40 more dogs"
to bring in - and no place to put them.
She can't, and doesn't know of anyone who would, agreee to drive him
north towards Pittsburgh.
She can't get him a Rabies shot - "County won't let me."
After a little whimpering & whining on my part,
Jodine agreed that she would make sure #34 stayed put (and safe)
till next Tuesday if we couldn't get him before then.
All things considered (long weekend, kennel space tight, no "deposit"
given for #34, etc) - I guess the only way to insure he gets to
Amber in Cleveland is to do it tomorrow.
IF I get to Kingwood and get him out before 2:00pm - the local Vet
(and ONLY Vet in town - Dr. Cary) will give him a Rabies shot
before he locks up his Clinic for a long weekend.
AMBER ~
Get in touch with me ASAP!!
If I'm going to do this tomorrow - I need to "dump" MY Three FurKids
with a neighbor (who I don't know yet if they will be home) and
get started in the morning.
It's going to be a LONG trip ~ 3.5 hours down, prolly an hour or two
"buying" him and getting his shot,
another 3.5 hours back, PLUS 45 minutes over to Kent!
And I AM going to make a stop in Pittsburgh to check on the
Memorial Garden we're having built in memory of my Mom ...
that's about a 1 hour detour off I-79 at Bridgeville.
That's about  10 -11 hours on the road -
you'll need to meet me sometime around 9 PM.
Last Chance to reconsider bringing #34 HOME -
* He has NO history with the Dog Warden - just an "Abandoned Mutt"
* He has NO known vaccinations
* He has NO heartworm test - and may never have had heartworm preventatives
* He's NOT neutered
* His House manners are UNknown
Contact me ASAP!!

Phred, you are definitely one incredibly amazing person. I am in awe of your willingness to make such a run to help a person and dog that you have not met. I hope everything works out well for you on your adventure, and I hope everything works out well for Dog #34 and his new family once they meet each other. I will be thinking of all of you, and I hope someone gets a chance to update us sometime this weekend to let us know how everything went.
Amber I hope you stick around here and Pet Talk and let us get to know this little boy as he learns to become part of your family.
Thank you for jumping in there again, Phred.

Hi All!!!!
Well - #34 now has a name: Harvey. Justin (my hubby) asked him if he liked that name and that was the first one that the wagged his tail at! So, Harvey it is :-).
When we got home, I got Chance out (a beagle-boxer mix that is just FULL of energy all the time), and he got to meet Harvey. That seem to get along pretty well. We waited outside until Just came home from school (about 30 mins or so) and then both dogs got a good ol scrubbin. We have yet another dog who does not like water, much to my husband's dismay :-). However, I hope in time he will learn to like the water, or at least tolerate it if our canoe flips! Right now while I'm at work he's in the cage in the basement we used to use for Chance before we could trust him in the house. I go to the vet's at 3:15 today so he can get all stuck and made sure that he's healthy!
I sure hope he goes potty soon though - I think he might have empty bowels after the 2 big piles he did for you Phred! :-) but I have to take in a stool sample!

Oh! and we found a treat he likes: Beef & Cheese Nawsomes! I have yet to find a dog that doesn't like them actually :-).
Only took about 5 or 6 different treats before he'd eat that one. He seemed as if he would kind of like the bil-jac liver treats, but he would just lick it and drop it on the floor.

:D
So "Harvey" it is!
That's easier to say than "#34"!
No poop?
Hard to believe! (not) I don't think that boy had *pooped* for a week!
As long as he's eaten, the Vet can "slip" a probe in to retrieve
enough for a fecal test ...
But most vets now advise to just give a "new dog" a multi-purpose
wormer without testing ... then you bring a sample in for a test
AFTER the worming - to see if any critters survived the first dose.
Glad to hear he's found a treat he LIKES -
bound to help with his training!
I take it that Justin "approved"??

and all looks okay! He has to take eye drops 2x a day for 2 weeks to clear up the weepiness, and the "dandruff" is from the fleas he had (uh-oh Phred, hope your mutts are treated!), and the vet thinks he is 2-2 1/2 years old, so I am making him 2 1/2 so he can share the same b-day as Chance, just one year older.
The vet seems to think I got a good dog here! Maybe even some sort of show quality dog due to the way he holds his front toes all tight.
The only downfall is he seemed to think my sister's bunny would be rather tasty, so I need to watch my guinea pigs around him! (Don't worry, he didn't hurt "bunny" at all!)

Hi all!
Well, we didn't get to go canoeing, but Harvey sure liked "Grandma's" house! He got to run around in the yard and get all sorts of loving attention.
We introduced him to the guinea pigs this weekend (I have 4 of them) - NOT a good idea! I took out the largest pig I had (Sunshine) and was holding her in my hands (and protecting her little limbs) and harvey wanted to eat her! My ever so smart husband decided to put Sunshine on the ground while holding Harvey, and Harvey took a chunk of her fur right out. Luckily he didn't nip her or anything, and she has really thick fur, so she was just fine. Now we are going to have to keep Harvey crated until I can get a completely secure cage for at least my girls - the boys are in a cage that is high enough that Harvey can't get to them, but he could get to the girls if he wanted to!
He doesn't seem too interested in them while they're in the cage, so I think they'll probably be okay when I'm in the house and keeping an eye on Harvey. Does anyone have any ideas on how to retrain the dog on the differences between outside animals (such as squirrels) and 'siblings' (such as guinea pigs)? My other dog, Chance, knows that the guinea pigs are his brothers & sister and better be 'nice' or otherwise he'll get a whap on the nose!
Also, Harvey doesn't seem to know any tricks at all - what do you recommend we start with?
Last night on our way home he gave us a little scare. We stopped at Burger King (drive thru) and we had the back window in the truck open for Chance to stick his head out. Well, next thing we know, Chance is in Harvey's seat, and Harvey isn't in the truck! He had jumped out of the window onto the tonneau cover! I rushed out of the truck as fast as I could with 4 gps on my lap and trued to get him off of the tonneau. He jumped off the tonneau onto the pavement and I just had to slowly follow him until he stopped to pee on a light pole. I'm just glad I went to PetCo and got him a nametag with our info on it. Guess we'll have to keep him leashed in the truck until we can get him trained to stay inside with us, or at least to come when called.
I didn't get any pictures taken this weekend because my camera batteries are dead. I'll get some as soon as I can!

There's your First Trick to teach = COME when Called!
He does a Nice SIT - when the mood strikes him.
Anothe "trick" that learns easily with treats.
SIT and DOWN (as in LAY Down) are good ones to practice with
Chance "assisting" as a role model ...
Have Chance accomplish the command and "Treat" him;
then help Harvey through the command and give a tiny treat if
he gets it at least partially right.
As time and practice march on; only give a treat if Harvey really
"gets it right" -
he'll be a lot more inclined to do it right when he sees Chance rewarded
for good SITs and DOWNs.
Cinder really enjoyed "helpin" Smokey learn his commands and tricks -
SHE could do them in her sleep and it was almost like stealing candy
for her to plop into a Sit or a Down ... didn't take SmokeMutt
too many missed treats till he cought on that "doin what She just did"
earned HIM a treat, too! :D
"Eating the Pocket Pets"??
Try a STRONG Leash tied to a HEAVY table ...
then sit yourself and a Lil Critter just OUT of Harvey's reach ...
"Reward" for gentle behavior ( or at least not foaming at the mouth)
till he begins to associate treats & praise with ignoring the Lil Guys.
But remember he's a HUNTING Dawg ... trying
to teach him not to "hunt" in the house may take a Long Time!

I thought I'd mentioned that!
Harvey has the desire to be a Door >DARTER<!
And he's pretty good at it!
At the Vets Office - I held the pre-attached leash as I opened his door ...
*Zoomie* - he launched himself off the seat and out the door
in a flash! I had a firm grip and he came to a quick stop!
At the rest area pit stop - I'd forgotten and got out to *stretch* before
I closed my door ... HEY ~ Lookit that dog running past me!
 That's MY #34!!
A quick *STOMP* on the trailing leash halted that escape.
Next stop I was on the alert ...
<Slip> out of and CLOSE my door ... open his door and GRAB the leash ...
He STILL insisted on a mad DASH out the door and managed
to pull the leash out of my grip!
A nearby Light Pole was his downfall ... hard to *pee* and *run*
at the same time!
He walked rather well on the leash; but every so often he'd *LUNGE*
and give a hard pull on the leash - as if "testing" to see if you're
really holding on!
I'll bet he tries to >DART< out doors at the house ...
We practice the *WAIT* command when opening doors:
They have to *WAIT* at an opening door till *I* say "OK" ...
then they're allowed to pass through.
Cinder & Smokey are pretty good at *Waiting* ... Bowser still
needs some work on that one!
You might find it *handy* to make Harvey wear a leash on his collar
ALL the time in the house for a while - makes it easier to apply a
"correction" if he's already wearing the "corrective aid"!

Saturday we had to make another trip to the vet. Friday when I got home my neighbor notified me that Harvey had left quite the aromatic surprise in his cage! (My neighbor lets the dogs out if I get stuck at work). Of course I waited for mu husband to get home (about 20 mins) so he could clean it up :-).
Well, there was a LOT of it, and nearly half was blood. The vet was already gone for the day, so we decided to wait it out overnight and take him in the morning unless he took a turn for the worse then we'd take him to an emergency vet. He was fine overnight and when we took him into the vet's office we found out he has hookworms. Fun fun! We immediately went home and mixed his medicine with half a can of dog food. Wouldn't you know he would not eat that food??? Well I just took away both dog's food and waited until Harvey was hungry enough to eat it (about an hour later actually). I limited Harvey's food over the last few days so he would eat the canned food with the medicine in it, the once he was done with it last night I put the dry food out again.
After Harvey was done eating, Just & I went out in the yard and cleaned up every last bit of poop we could find, then raked the yard just to double check. I got the sprayer off my ortho max container and mixed up a batch of bleachwater and we sprayed the backyard. I let my neighbors know that no one can walk in the backyard without sneakers, and not to let the kids play in our backyard, etc. Now we have to be freakishly clean in the backyard, where before we used to just clean up the "land mines" once a week. Makes nightime potty runs all the more fun! hehe.
I called the shelter and they are going to extend the neuter deal for another 30 days because Harvey has to go through the deworming in another 3 weeks, then do the cycle again in 3 months after that. I just hope Chance doesn't pick it up!
