10. You'll save $$ on their Halloween costumes.
9. You can always find them in the snow.
8. Holding a black cat is very slimming.
7. Black cats will match any decor.
6. A lint brush isn't required for a black-tie affair.
5. When you love a black cat, luck is on your side.
4. Black cats are like onyx, a beautiful gem.
3. Hey, they don't care what color you are!
2. Love knows no color.

And the number one reason to adopt a black cat...

1. They are the least likely to be adopted.

This is a cute list! Lisa (CCL) was just telling me about all of the black kitties they have at the shelter she runs and that they are so hard to adopt out! I hope she sees this.

I find that Black cats are the most loyal to their owners. They love them more than anything. No need for playing with the other cats as much. They just love their owners so very much. The 3 I have are all the same as far as that goes.Nice cats. But really want to be the only cat.Very sensitive and jealous but very loving and always want to sleep near your head. They are so very affectionate.

Carla just described our black cat, Jasper to a "T"!!

And quite a few of our all black fosters (black tabbies do NOT count) were exactly like our Jasper. So much so that Charlie would call them Jasper Jr.s ;)

this is Abbys story, as was written in a previous post : I had a wonderful gray kitty that lived to be 16 and she was my very best friend when I was growing up. I got her when I was 5 yrs old , and she went to the bridge when i was 21 and it took me another 18 yrs till I felt comfortable enough to bring another kitty into my heart, because I always thought that there could never be a cat that I could love as much as my little Teeny girl. fast-forward to my age of 39, a co-workers son got a kitten who is gray and white, that I really fell for. I started telling my husband maybe the time has come to find me a new "love" (kitty ) so we went to the local humane society to find a beautiful gray and white kitten with white mittens none were to be found that day. but we did see many little blackies(but I didnt want any). I had my heart set on a gray and white and made a comment like...I dont want a black cat, I want a gray and white with mittens. ok. 3 weeks later we go again to look around. when in a corner cage there were two fuzzy little black furballs . I said OMG..here is THE one for me ! ,Husband says its not gray and white and has no mittens! I said who cares..she is coming home today with us. She is my precious baby Abby and I love her more than I ever thought I could love another kitty. She is like my second child that I could never have , and somehow I think my little Teeny girl sent her to me to love hope you enjoyed my story.

As the proud meowmie of a Black Princess I can vouch for all of those reasons, and way more, both my Black cats have been nothing less than awesome in nature, and yes very loyal and loving, I was suprised to read they are least likely to be adopted, why is that? is it superstition or something, I don't think it applies down under as Black Cats are seen as good luck.

There is nothing cutier than a sleek, shiny Black kittie see below.:)

I never knew that black cats are the least likely to be adopted. Onyx was our 2nd oldest - she would've been our oldest except that there weren't any black kittens at the time we were looking. But it didn't take us long to find Onyx - we even had her name picked out before we adopted her! :)

All your kitties are very cute!

I also learned recently that black cats are the least to be adopted! The same in every country apparently. I can't understand that. If you love them, don't you love them ALL??

The 10 and even more reasons should be hanged in every shelter
;)

And Tony, you are so pretty, I hope you find a home soon (I am too far from you boy!).

I agree that black cats tend to be (maybe overly:p ) affectionate. "Chip" my black Siamese is the funniest most silly boy. :) He's a "fine, fine feline" as I tell him all day, and "he's crazy, and I'm crazy about him"! His response to me is a gurgly noserub...that boy never stops talking. And what's not to love about my snaggle-toothed, half a front legged, one eyed Skippy? I'm soooo glad the vets didn't pull his fangs out when he had dentistry...they only add to his non-stop charm. :D

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v128/QueenScoopalot/MyprecioussnaggletoothedSkippyDoo.jpg

There is one drawback to black cats (only one mind you) they are hard to photograph, but easy to love. ;) :) :D

I'll have to add pictures later, but I will echo what everyone else has said. Our two blackies are great cats. Saphirah is a true daddy's girl--absolutely loyal and devoted. Samson is the best lap kitty that either of us has ever had, and he was a stray that wandered into our yard and hearts one day.

The gene that causes the banding we associate with tabbies has a non-banded form, so cats that are black with this form of the gene have no banding between the tabby stripes, masking the tabby pattern. This is very interesting. It may explain why my black and white Hercule (at the RB now) had some stripes on the black parts, only visible to the sun. These stripes looked more or less "orange". And it explains why black or black and white kitties can have tabby mothers, and that the other brothers and sisters can all be tabbies.

I never thought that I would want a black cat, but when I first met my Sasha (an mostly black tortie) and she snuggled into my :::ahem::: cleavage  , and immediatley started purring, I was IN LOVE! She is such a wonderful little girl, and keeps me laughing all the time. Next time, maybe I will go for all black! Who knows????

I loved the list, especially #8. But the least likely to be adopted? I never knew that. A black cat named Bear was my lovable companion for almost 20 years. I'll agree with QueenScoopAlot, however:

Everybody's Black Kitties are just gorgeous, I think it maybe a superstition thing in the US, but here in NZ, Black cats are considered good luck if they cross your path, and I believe in Scotland too, so my mother tells me, so I think they would be more popular to adopt in NZ for that reason maybe.

I have never chosen my cats by colour, Ash well he was a stray no decision there, and I was never going to adopt another Blackie after loosing my sweet boy Sootie, too painful a memory, but fate would have it, Lexie came into my life, and she just happened to be a black sweet girl, and she is the best.

You cannot beat a Black Beauty IMO, not that I am biased or anything.:D

No, we never chose our cats by color...we did it by instinct and by their purrsonalitites.

You see!!! My black cats have the same personalitys. They follow me around.Sleep on my head,if no other black cat took that spot already and very very loving.AND they drive me crazy:D .But they really don't like other cats.(At least mine don't).They want to be the only one and stay by your side always. My BooBoo is I think 17 now and I've had him since he was 6 weeks old.His brother (Black and White)KiKi died of Cancer of the jaw last year. But BooBoo never really cared to much for him.And Now with all these other cats he's so upset.Poor guy. He's used to all the attention. So he comes first. He's dying soon and I want him to have me all to his self and I can't.So I'm trying to be with him as much as possible. He has Thyroid problem plus he's not eating and he MAY have Cancer of the Jaw too.Very rare but his brother had it.His teeth are done all the time and are good but he keeps rubbing his cheek with his paw when he eats.I'm giving him chicken with Gravy baby food untill Monday when I get him to the vet.I hope they don't say it's time.I want to give him more love first.:(

Jen I'm so glad you started this thread! The shelter is overloaded with the most beautiful black cats! I can't understand it either. They are so sweet and so incredibly loving. I'm already figuring that I will get stuck with these two black kittens because I will not let them grow up and live their life in a cage at the shelter.
We even have two gorgeous long haired black cats at the shelter with a reduced adoption price and still no one wants them.:(
I know I don't have a black cat but I only took in the ferals that landed on my porch and it just so happened that none of them were black. Lucky is the closest I've got and he's a black tabby with very distinct tabby stripes.

Lets keep spreading the word about how wonderful they are and maybe we can get some of the beauties adopted!!:)
