A few weeks ago we had our dog spayed. Now she urinates in the house, but she was totally housebroken before the surgery. Could this be an infection from the surgery or something else?

:) First to say hello & welcome to PT
I have heard of several cases where dogs have this problem after being fixed & dont know unless the bladder muscle loosened from the surgery.. Sorry couldnt help & have you asked your Vet about this??

Thanks for the info. I haven't called the vet yet. I suspect the surgery might have caused this problem but I needed something to back that up so my dad doesn't threaten to get rid of her.

It could be because of a bladder infectiion also. I'd have
your Vet check her out ASAP. Good luck with this.

Although incontinence can occur as a result of spaying (e.g. at too young an age), that involves lack of bladder control, and the spontaneous release or dribbling of urine.
What you are describing fits the classic symptoms of a UT infection, where a previously house broken dog can not hold its urine for long periods of time. Most likely your Vet will want to treat with antibiotics.

Hello! Actually, this happened to my dog when she was spayed several years ago. In her case, she had a bladder infection. This is not uncommon after spaying. I have heard other possibilities, too, which are as follows:
Hernia developed after surgery
Pressure on the bladder from surgery
Some dogs just take a little extra time to recover from a surgery such as that. You also have to think of the "what if you were in her position." Either way, definitely contact your vet.
