View Full Version : Prayers For Thumper

She hasnt been acting right today. No appetite, No pep. So at 7 p.m. we went off to the ER vet's (1 hr away). They did cbc and it showed only 2 things, dehyrdation and elevated sugar (stress probably from having blood drawn). She had a temp of 105 but all the blood work ups showed no sign of infection. They are stumped. She is spending the night at the ER vet and they will give her IV fluids and check her temp on regular basis. It was down to 104.5 when we left at 10 p.m. They also ran a Feline Leukemia and it was negative.
Her bone bump on top of her head now we know why, it was more than likely due to trama as a kitten. If it was done as an adult she would of died. That was a sad revoluation.
They want our vet to run an FIP test. Since we have multiple cats in the house. Slim chance it would come back postive but we should have it run to rule out.
So poor baby wasnt to pleased with Mom and Dad tonight. She wanted to go back into the carrier and come home.
We have to be back up to the ER vet's before 7:30 a.m. to bring her home. They close at 8 a.m. We need to take her over to our vets after leaving there. It's a hour drive one way (near where hubby teaches school). Hubby is taking tomorrow off.
Please keep good thoughts and prayers for our baby. I'm off to bed to get some sleep before having to get up and leave the house before 6 a.m.
I will update tomorrow.
UPDATE... 5 a.m. We just called the ER vet's and she is doing pretty good. Temp is now 103.5 (they had to put another IV line in the other leg because first one fell out, poor baby stuck twice) In 1hr we leave to go pick her up and then go right to our regular vets.

Best wishes for Thumper. I wonder what it could be?
I would definitely ASK your vet about that FIP test. As I understand it, it is not a REAL conclusive test. It shows if the cat has been exposed to the virus but that is totally different to the cat actually having symptoms of the disease. MANY cats have been exposed to the virus (especially if they ever lived outdoors) but a much smaller percentage of those cats actually develop the disease.

UPDATE 10:09 a.m.
Thumper is at our regular vets. Her temp was up 104 from 103.5
during the night. Our vet was most shock that they didnt give her an antibotic in her iv. His words "she had 105 temp, even though the labs said no infection, there is something". He suspects and UTI and is doing an urinalysis. He will attempt to put the iv back but it's not necessary at this point because she is well hydrated. We mention to him about FIP and he told us NOT TO PANIC and he is not thinking FIP. The test is $100 and can come back false postive and false negative. He does this test as LAST RESORT.
If she can eat and pee by the end of office hours, Thumper can come home if not she has to spend the night. I'm not thrilled about that because they have no one there watching the animals.
We are to call back around 3p.m. today for updates.
I'm off to bed.

Oh no, poor little Thumper! I sure hope they find something, or at the very least get her fever down and get her to drink, eat, pee and poop so she can come home tonight!

UPDATE 4:40 P.M
She has to stay at the vets tonight :(
Her temp is 104.5 up .5
They think it's a kidney infection
Another antibotic shot will be given before they leave for the night. They will continue i.v. fluids.
Our vet is not comfortable sending her home with temp that cant be handled with oral antibotics. Yet, they are leaving her alone tonight at office. Go figure that one.
I'm to call at 10 a.m. tomorrow

:( I hate when they need to stay ALONE at the vet's office. It seems so stupid. Prayers for Thumper.

6:47 pm UPDATE
We called back around 5:45 p.m just before closing. Thumper has eaten a good portion of the dry Friskee's they offered. Oh joy, we eat Nutro and she is eating Friskee stuff LOL
Her body functions are normal YEAH peed, pooped today :)
The broading staff will be there between 9-10 p.m. tonight and will check up on her. Makes me feel little better that she will have someone looking after her for part of the evening.

It could still be a virus infection. I am glad to hear that she is better and peeing, pooping and eating. So I hope she's on her way to recovery:)

Barbara,
They suspect kidney infection.
Update 10:33 a.m.
SHE GETS TO COME HOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are going to give her another antibotic shot.
Also giving her medication to bring the fever down.
Will send her home with oral antibotic.
They will call be later this morning when she is ready to be picked up. She is eating, peeing. pooping !!!!!!!! Did not pull anything out last night!!!!!
I will be anxious to talk with the vet.
Poor Skinny is picking at his food or playing with it. Going from room to room looking for Thumper (i think). He doesnt feel warm to me. I'm debating about taking him with me and having them do a quick "once over" as I told hubby, what's another $35 o/v to our hugh bill. LOL

Oh you must be so relieved that Thumper is coming home. Prayers that the antibiotics kick in and she's back to normal in no time.
Sorry to hear about Skinny but better safe than sorry. Feel better Skinny.

I check him over good. He doesnt feel warm and his ears are cool (if hot indicates fever). I will talk with them when they call me back to pick Thumper up.
Noon...
I'm leaving to pick her up!!!!!!!!!!
They are saying UTI caused all this problem.
No need to bring Skinny with me they feel it's because he misses her. To see how he acts once she is home.

WERE HOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can see where they shaved her in the neck area (to draw blood) and legs for iv's. The red tape can come off anytime, thought I'd try that later tonight.
14 days worth of 1x a day antibotic.
Skinny seemed pleased to see her. Thumper growled at him LOL
I've suspended the "diet plan" for the next couple days. Dont want to stress Thumper since she is eating good and used to food being there last couple days whenever she was hungry. This will give Skinny time to settle down and get back into munching. Bless her heart she has munched within first 10 mins of being home. Cindy is loving going from bowl to bowl munching. LOL

Evening Update
Thumper is eating up all the attention we are giving her since coming home. We cuddled tonight on our bed while watching a show on HGTV(home garden/ tv), thats a sure sign she is starting to feel better. I wont try the temperature taking again for a day, I thought that would be a good idea trying before dinnertime. NOT, peeved her off. She had enough of stuff up ying yang. The vets office said if I wanted to I could monitor her temp. Thumper had other plans. LOL
Mom and Dad are certainly going to sleep much better tonight. :)

So glad to hear Thumper is on the road to recovery. I can't blame her for objected to the temp thing either. I think I would more than complain if someone was trying to take my temp that way.
Glad to know also the Skinny is back eating and settling back down since sis came home. It's so sweet when they love each other like that.

9:45 p.m. Update
Thumper was given ketoprofen injection (is given to humans for pain, inflammation reducing and fever reducing). Common side effect for humans according to doseage is tummy problems.
Guess who barf all that they ate today :(
I called the ER vet and they said it's probably the medicine (although the gal didn't go ask a vet). Also she was eating Friskees at the vets and this is not her normal diet.
She seems fine other than probably hungry now after upchucking everything she ate today.
I will call our vet in the a.m.
Always something
She just went potty and it's semi tootie roll (think antibotics are effecting it stinks big time too)

11:30 p.m. update
I took her temp and it was 104.4
Called the ER clinic and talked to a vet on call. Really nice we didnt have her the other night. In talking with her she felt that it was ok to wait until tomorrow morning to call our vet. Yes there was a fever but it wasnt any 105 like the other night. Infection (UTI) causing this to happen. Unfortunately the fever shot (actually ivprofen spell? like Advil) should work for 12/24 hrs. Now did she throw up all of it's effects we dont know. Hubby gets up at the ungodly hour of 4:15 am, he leaves for work (teacher) at 5:30 a.m. I will take her temp again then and see.
This vet recommended just letting her sleep and rest.
I felt better after actually talking to a vet.
It's so frustrating to not beable to talk to your own vet directly in after office hours. Medical dr's do it why cant animal vets.

She felt normal at 3:30 a.m. this morning.
I just tried to take her temp and in the same amount of time I had the high reading last night and it barely stared to move at that pt today it was only reading 92.0
She got very pissed at me so I stopped.
I have a call in to our vet and inbetween cases and surgery he wil call me back.
She is eating, drinking and pooping. :)

Temp 101.4 !!!!!!!!!
Although it could go back up in the evening/night time just like humans temp that can spike at night.
I hope that isnt the case tonight. Since she has 1 shot and 2 antibotic tablets under her belt for far since this all started.

Glad Thumper is doing better and will pray that she continues that way. It's so frustrating when we have to leave them. At least at Dr. Lee's, someone is there even on Sundays and one of the staff vets called me on Sun. morning. But I still feel lousy about it when I have to leave one of my furkids. But we do what we gotta and you're a good mommy, so hang in there, both of ya!

Update
She had a great day, starting to act like her old self by churping at the bathroom sink for mom to turn the water on. Also, she slept with us last night ;) and spent good part of the day down stairs on dad's favorite chair.
I did take a temp reading around 10 p.m. tonight and it's still 101.1 :) :) :) I know I said earlier today wasnt going to do it but I just wanted to double check. Her appetite is coming back not quite normal but we are getting there.
The only concern at this point is watching the potty. You can tell she is on an antibotic. I hope it just stays at half tootie and harden pudding. Gotta love our description of our furry kids potty, but sad thing is we all know what I'm talking about in my description. LOL

Sunday a.m. updatey (5:23 a.m.)
Yep, everyone wanted Mom up. LOL
Thumpers appetite is not up to normal. I tried giving her some of Cindys chicken/lamb rice wet in a bowl, wet can food is unfamilar territory. So I gave some to her, she licked her lips :)
This antibotic is 25 milgrams, I think it's surpressing her appetite. I'm going to run over Monday to vet's office I take Cindy to and get some of that NutraCal stuff that supplements cats who are taking in limited calories. Thumper does like that stuff (it';s liver flavor out of a tube). Cindy loved it.

Antibiotics usually cause tummy upset. So the nutracal is a good idea. It should settle her tummy. :)

I wish PetSmart was closer to us it's cheaper than at the vets office. The pills were going down good until today. She didnt like my persistance this a.m. LOL
When she growled at me, I growled back... should of seen the look on her face it was priceless. :D

Friday 8/26 Update...
What a difference in a week. We are 1/2 way through the antibotic (only a few days of spitting out contest with mom :) ) Thumpers appetite came back to pretty much normal this past Wednesday after picking at food the week before. I've been using the NutraCal product 2x a day and I think that has also helped get her appetite back on track.
She is so much more active the past few days too.
We are still hoping the shaved areas grow back. Unlike her spay area which never grew back.
Weather permitting (we have storms all day forecasted) I'll try to post some photos of our recovering gal.
