Do any of your dogs have odd behavior? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Today beat everything. My golden retriever, Honey, has been quite the bird hunter all summer, literally catching them when they land on the ground. But today, she did something extraordinary. She brought me a rat, the size of a squirrel. I didn't know whether to say thank you, or fuss. Actually I'm glad she got it, but I can't believe I had a rat in my yard! The exterminator is coming and everything is back to normal.

I have a 8 year old Border Collie who nibbles on our 6 year old terrier mix dog Both are males and nuetered, and the Collie is definately the dominate dog. The terrier sometimes seems nervous when the nibbling is taking place, but usually seems to enjoy it. Is this the older dogs way of showing dominance?

My Hannah (a cockapoo) hates to go outside first thing in the morning. We have a lovely fenced in back yard and the weather has been beautiful, but I literally have to chase her around the house and sometime put her on a leash to lead her to the door. Then the challenge is to get her off the deck. I think she resents the fact that I don't go with her anymore, like I did before we put up the fence. Either that or something about the grass being wet with dew. What do you think?

I think this so adorable (and of course brillant)that Cody (gr/yl mix)wakes me up with a whine and a kiss the second he hears my alarm. He knows the name of all his toys and can find his leash wherever I leave it. In the morning he mischieviously goes down our hill (me in slippers so I can't nab him) and rolls and rolls in the dewy wet grass and will lay there playing dead until I threaten to go inside and lock him out! On snowy morns esp he will stay out for what seems forever and just run and roll and dig until the yard looks like a bomb hit it. Ya really can't get angry-it's just so cute no matter how wet he gets.I've learned to get up earlier because it's so predictable. We also built a cememnt porch in back which he has REFUSED to even walk on (goes around) cause I think it ruined his routine and he liked the yard exactly like it WAS!

When my neighbor lets Nikki(her boxer)out in the morning she will run around on the drivway but she will not go in the wet grass!! She dose the same thing after it rains!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

THX JKRJG24..being a 1st time dog owner thru years of hell, (didn't know what Alpha was) everything he does is amazing-he understands everything. I mean he'll never win obedience trials or anything but all I constantly say is "How did he learn to do that?" and watch him with such amazement. I guess I did ok training him after all. We have an amazing kinship that defies description. I love him with all my heart and soul and every inch of my being-sopping wet in my house and all

My dog, Cleo (a cockerpoo), always uses the sidewalk when playing fetch. I'll throw the ball, and she'll chase it (running on the grass), but when she returns with the ball, she trots down the sidewalk (very funny to watch!).

We had a Westie that did the same thing. We found out that she was allergic to the grass, and it hurt her feet. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

to K-9kids,
I have a dog named Jake who is also 8 years old and he is a toy poodle.he has a weird behaiviour of catching mice that are outside in our backyard,he recently caught a baby one which is good cause with him around we'll never need an exterminator, ever. He's sooo smart and he's even an exelnt runner and diver and swimmer. I also have a mouse who i bought from the petshop at liverpool shopping centre in february this year and she is a beautiful mouse and everyone always says how beatiful she is and plus my dog is always trying to eat her but i keep her safe all the time. He also always when i associate with her by holding her or even paying any sort of attention he'll usually jump up on me or scratch me till i put her awy back in the cage. What should i do about this situation i am concerned about at the moment?

Ihg0962:

Star is the consummate hunter. (YLRD) From the time she was a puppy she would excitedly hunt out mice, then squirrels, once a skunk, (which she hid in the woodpile for future enjoyment; took me months to find out where the smell was coming from:D) one opposum and finally, yes, the dreaded HUGE rat. From the window I saw her trotting spritely and with great pride across the patio, poor dead corpse swinging helplessly in the wind. I thought I would puke!! I didn't kiss that mouth for weeks! Finally she dropped it; at the back door!!! EXTERMINATOR!! Her most notable hunt was the tale of the "hiddden squirrel." This time I watched her prance about the yard gleefully with a poor little deceased squirrel dangling from her mouth. I made SURE that when she came into the house the squirrel was out of her mouth and out of sight. She got the green light to enter... no squirrel! There we sat together, she at my feet sleeping peacefully. After a bit I got up to do some work in the kitchen. I looked back into the room and couldn't believe what I saw. AHHH!!!!!!!!!! I thought I was going crazy!!! There, where my feet were just moments ago, lay a grey, furry, pile streaked in red; not remanents, but a WHOLE body!! I KNEW she hadn't brought it in with her. Lightbulb moment!!!!!!!!!!! She had, just moments after having gotten up, hurled up the entire squirrel WHOLE!! With no husband in sight, I ushered her outside and waited for the disposal engineer to come home to remove the carnage! I still shiver when I think what my response would have been had she "hurled" it at my feet!! My vet says some dogs just have that predator/prey instinct more than others. Giving them squeaky toys that look like squirrels doesn't help!! Past year: No confirmed kills, thank goodness!!

A cute thing she does is prance to the doorway to greet me as I enter the room, hopping on her hind legs, front paws bent and half-jumping and wiggling like a fish does when being reeled in, wriggling in the air. Cody sounds so adorable, Karen!

As I said, Star hasn't hunted a fly for the past year, after her puppyhood. In fact, she preens and washes the faces of my GSD Cody, my 2 furkitties, sleeps with my bunny, who has the run of the house, and trots around gently giving my parakeet a ride on her back. She loves little babies, is very protective of children, and shows love to everyone. Perhaps it was an infantile stage and the environment. My dogs have 3 fenced acres with woods, in which to play and explore.

It's been a while since the last time I posted on this topic, and I had to go back to see what Honey's latest victim was. Well, she did beat the rat. She got a possum about a month ago. GROSS!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif I have a fenced back yard in a subdivision. I never expected all these creatures. I have to say that my cat doesn't help, because she brings her victims to the backyard as well, and then the Golden Retrievers carry them all over the yard! Funny, they stick to their retriever instincts and never chew up anything. I certainly can't say that for the cat as some things come "headless"! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Thank you all for making me feel better. In one the the topics I mentioned the critter from under the neighbors bushes that he dropped on the porch. I thought it was a glove (dark) so instead of taking him thru the house I had to force him w/food to drop it and I nearly fainted, died, screamed, barfed. It was already dead but I saw more animal entrails than I ever wanted to see. Ha Ha, I didn't kiss that face for days either! If he had eaten it, and chucked it, I swear, I would have had a heart attack. The stories are funny later but not at the time. With these lovely, tasty thoughts, Happy Halloween to everyone too!! Ahhhh, Halloweeen! The best time of the year for my dogs -- doorbell constantly ringing and all of those cute little faces to lick! My two have never brought me any "treats" like some of yours have so graciously done, but I'm sure it's just because they're too lazy to go out and get something. They'd rather wait until some creature crosses their paths. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif Happy Halloween to good doggie friends and all of their humans!

My possum was "playing possum" too!!! I picked him up in the shovel and threw him over the fence and told my daughter that if he was still there the next morning, we would bury him. HE WAS GONE!!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif Bet he won't come back near my house. Honey and Lilly rolled him all around the yard like a soccer ball!!!

KYS,
I was surprised that she did not hurt them. I expected to go over and find a dead bird, but instead found one with just a wet face and in shock!! The chipmunk was cornered and I thought he'd be a goner, but she just licked him and let him run off and she did not chase him!! She destroys all her squeeky toys, though.

Hannah and Tucker do a lot of chasing of bunnies, squirrels and chippies, but so far haven't caught any. There was a dead chippie laying on the lawn and of course Hannah couldn't resist investigating and flipping it in the air. I'm sure she wanted to carry it around some but with me screaming and doing my maniac crazy lady routine, she couldn't quite concentrate. I know the whole neighborhood heard "No, No, No, Hannah, No, Leave It, Leave It, Leave It"

Yes, tonight will be a real joy. Every single ring of the doorbell will be accompanied by bark, bark, bark if my two hold true to form. I'm trying to get my strength up with a few Hershey bars right now. Happy Halloween from Rachel, Hannah and Tucker

Countdown and dreading it. Poor Cody will be in lockdown. God forbid the doorbell rings and strangers enter his domain and maybe hurt his people. Oh Lord! I need a Valium. The kids come sporatically or not at all so poor thing is trapped for hours. Sigh! Two tears in a bucket.

Yes, I'm the grinch too, not the one who stole Christmas, but the Halloween grinch. I am not looking forward to all the barking either. If I would crate them, it would be worse. I hope we all survive tonight! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

to pick him up that night or the poor Possum would have taken a long drive to the Dump.

Well, made it thru another Halloween! Had MANY trick or treaters and of course, my dogs didn't think anyone was going to hurt their humans - they just saw it as an opportunity to lick little kids. They even managed to dip their heads in the treat bowl and steal some Smarties when we weren't looking.

Hey it was a pleasant surprise for me too! The older dog was tired, so went to her crate voluntarily, and I put a bandana and some bonker skulls that light up on the neck of the younger dog. One or two woofs and she decided this might be fun! The kids loved her!

OK, I'm going to admit what we did for Halloween. I knew that Honey would go nuts with the trick or treaters, so she and Lilly stayed in the backyard and we went to another neighborhood with one of my daughter's friends!!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/redface.gif My house was completely dark, so hopefully no one came. It probably looked pretty weird considering I've had all kinds of pumpkins and ghost lights lit around the front porch for two weeks now. Not last night!!!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif
My Honey tends to be a little nervous around strangers and I thought they would just be better off in the back where they wouldn't hear anything. No complaints from the neighbors, so I guess all was well!!

By the way, KYS, as for "shovelling" the possum. I was trying to pick him up with these pincher things my neighbor gave me to put him in a trash bag, and ultimately the trash. We were in the pitch, black dark, with my daughter holding the flashlight. No husband here to help!!! That's when I saw that he was still breathing!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif

Ok, I've got one for you guys. My border collie is a purebred FOOD HOUND. When it's time for his and Annie's cookies at night, he starts to drool and foam like a rabid dog. It starts to run from his mouth like a faucet as soon as I hit the cookie cupboard. Last night, I got the cookies out and started to put them thru their paces. I wasn't thinking and had Max "dance" for me (actually spins around in circles 3 times real fast). Anyway, in the process of doing this, he turned into a canine sprinkler, spewing dog drool all over my kitchen. Yikes! I was laughing so hard, thought I was gonna die, but when I looked at my hubby, he was starting to gag!!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif Who needs TV when I have this constant source of entertainment? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Needed Nov 1` off to recuperate-just kidding! Cody, the stinker, knew something was up when I put the babygate up between the bannister and the wall to the kitchen. Waited over 1 hr no kids, so we went out for our walk when the 2 neighbor kids showed up and since, thankfully, Cody LOVES them, no problem. The next few times, he ran up the steps and barked through the bannister. The 8 older kids wanted to take him with (yeah, right) since he started whining (they showed no fear) but the last 2 older kids jumped back 2 feet and jumped up 10! Entire candy transaction... a millisecond! No more kids after that (?), another walk and all was well. I panicked for nothing, but I wasn't sure what to expect. Thank God it's once a year! Ha Ha Teena! Not very appetizing but I can picture the dog and your husband's reaction and have to LOL! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif I would watch out for HIS gag reflex!

11-03-2000, 02:26 AM
I have read thru some of your stories... aren't dogs just the best entertainment around!

Here is a few of my dogs weird behaviors...
1. Lexi and Sasha both run in and out of the doggie door - and I mean in and out... they will literally walk into the house, turn around and go back out.. continuously! They usually only do it when I am trying to sleep of course http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/rolleyes.gif! I work graves so they have the house to themselves during the day while hubby is at work. All I hear is that damn doggie door flapping all day long!! Until I get up and close it off after I am fuming mad and wide awake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. My girls seriously french kiss each other! The sit there nose to nose and kiss each other! Also, sometimes one dog will lick the other dog's face or lick inside of her ear! Lexi is the dominate dog and I normally see Sasha doing the licking to Lexi but it does go both ways. Weird...

3. In response to 'how did they learn that?' I wonder that all of the time. Lexi seems to understand everything I say! Sasha doesn't but she is too cute so I don't care! One example is one day I was sitting in my computer room typing away and I heard Lexi's toy dinosaur roaring... she has somehow managed to damage the voice box inside and if she chews it just right it keeps on roaring and won't stop until you pick it up and click the box. Well, she was in the livingroom and I yelled out "Lexi! Bring me your damn dinosaur!" Next thing I knew I heard the collar and she came down the hallway with her dinosaur in-mouth and gave it to me. I shut it off and sent her on her way! Saved me from having to get up!

4. This is kind of a question.. and I don't want to get to gory... Do any of you ladies ever notice your dog getting extra clingy during "that time of the month"? I know that sounds totally weird and gross but Lexi just seems to want to be near me or in my lap whenever that time rolls around... otherwise she is usually independent. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this.

Some bitches suffer more than others during and after their season, just like women! Hormonal changes to facilitate breeding can play havoc with a bitch's emotional state. As the natural consequences of a season, mating and whelping, have been removed from the dog she is confused and upset by the way she feels. Another good reason to spey your bitches!

Your dogs sound very entertaining, I've got some good ones too about my 2 golden retriever mixes.

Upon entering the house, they always circle the couch completely at least once at full speed (it's right by the back door) even though there's plenty of room to get around it.

When the grass in the backyard is high, one of them will not go out into it to "go potty." She will go right next to the deck. Evidently she doesn't like the tickling feeling on her legs!

The same dog once had ants in her food bowl outside, so we moved it inside. She does not eat until she has pushed the food bowl all around the kitchen with her nose, and she throws food out of the bowl with her nose to check for ants.

They are both terrified by any toy that squeaks. The big dog will actually growl at the toy.

Have a great day!

Our smallest dog "Flap," is a Chihuahuah/Pikenese mix. When he was small, I always used to get irritated with him because he would lick and bite all the time. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif When he finally realized I didn't like him to do that, he would bite his licence tag on his collar and hold it in his mouth untill I stopped petting him http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif He still does that to this very day and he's a little over 7yr. old!!!!! Not really odd behavior but on Halloween I came home from work early to take my daughter trick-or-treating. I get inside the house and my basset/lab Jeffrey greets me at the door in a frilly little pink dress. My daughter had dressed him in her doll's dress, complete with ruffles and a bow. We went out and he was the hit of the evening! He was very patient ( he's usually hyper)kissed the children, allowed them to hug him, posed for pictures and did not once tug at all the flowing ruffles. He did wet the dress but he enjoyed all the attention he was getting. I had a project to finish for work so I rushed home about eight, got my daughter to bed and I sat down at the computer. I finished at about 11:00 and as the norm said "Bedtime, Jeffrey" My mind was on the project and the mountain of papers I had waiting on my desk at work. Jeffrey hopped out of the rocker and came to me still wearing his beautiful pink dress, ruffles, bow and all! I had to laugh. What a great stress releiver!

Wow I love puppy breath too! My baby has grown out of it though http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif But about all of the strange things your dogs have caught, my dog did the same. Daisy is a Basset but despite what you may think of them, they are fast dogs when they want to be! Well, you can imagine my surprise when I looked out in my yard one day and saw Daisy pawing at a chicken! And not a ready-to-be-cooked one, a real feathered live rooster! Well, it HAD been alive anyway... she and my neighbor/cousin's chickens had always gotten along just fine... I guess she just played a little too rough this time! Good thing they weren't mad, they still had one chicken left after all.... and that one only lasted about a month... needless to say, they have not bought any new chickens since! I guess Bassets and chickens don't mix! I felt really bad about the whole thing, but they didn't care, they were sick of the chickens anyway, and my mother was almost happy because they let the chickens wander around and were always wrecking our garden. Daisy was just helping out the family and playing tag a little too rough!
