View Full Version : Meeshe hospitalized . . . Prayers Please

My Son(shine boy) Meeshe has always been FeLV+ since I rescued him as a youngster, yet was always very healthy in spite of it and he is now about 5 or 6 years old.
I took him for his annual on July 1st and he was given a clean bill of health. The only problem I had lately noticed that I mentioned to vet was that he was having a difficult time chewing his dry food. Vet said his mouth and teeth were fine. Since then, he has been been losing weight (turns out he lost 2 lbs. in one month!) and then practically stopped eating entirely, and became lethargic. At first I blamed it all on the heat and humidity but enough is enough and I took him back to vet (today) and after blood tests and Xrays he is anemic, jaundice and has liver distention. Blood was sent to an outside lab to determine precisely what is going on with liver; possible hepatitis or it could be simply a compromised liver due to his not eating. Vet is keeping him "on supportive care" . . . I don't like the sound of that term :( . . . for a few days at the clinic. Results of outside lab work should be back tomorrow and vet will call. I don't know how his condition could have gone from healthy to this stage in not quite a month. I am a vigilant guardian to my cats, and only wish they were not so stoic about their ailments.
We visited him tonight and brought him his favorite wet food (he licked a little bit . . . good sign, I hope) and his special blanket to comfort him. I held him and he could not keep his head up. I am very afraid for my boy. I just had to post this because it helps me deal with my fears, and I know PetTalk thoughts and prayers can work wonders. Thanks for listening.

How frightening!:(
I'm glad you got your little one into the vet. It's never fun when they're away from home but it is encouraging that Meeshe ate a little bit tonight. My thoughts and well wishes are with you; here's hoping for positive news, tomorrow.

Oh No! I had to post, because my boy has a similar name - Mishi (probably pronounced the same). Poor Meeshe! I do hope that whatever the problem is, is easily treated and that he has a speedy recovery. Meeshe! The M's are purraying for you!

My deepest gratitude to everyone for your heartfelt responses, thoughts and prayers.
Meeshe was kept overnight and then came home with three meds: liquid anitbiotic, pills to encourage his appetite and pills to help his anemia. I am saddened to report that he has refused to eat or drink and I tried baby food plus everything else I could think of to tempt him. Results of outside lab work (from talking to vet tech today since I never got a phone call yesterday) indicate he is severely anemic due to bleeding internally, with the suggestion that seeking a critical care vet hospital for a blood transfusion could buy him a little more time. He seems to be in such pain and is not doing very well . . . I made an appt. to take Meeshe back to talk to vet tomorrow and I have a feeling that it is his time to go to Rainbow Bridge. I will see what the vet herself has to say regarding his prognosis and then make a decision. If there is no possibility that he can regain health, I do not want to "buy him more time", only for him to linger and continue suffering. :(
I thank you all for helping me along through this with your kind words. Blessings to each and every one of you.

I can understand that very well. It would be the same here. When it is their time to go to RB I would feel very egoistic if I had to buy some more time for me- and would have to pay with prolonged suffering for my furkid.
But it's still heartbreaking. I hope there are still some moments of tenderness and purring between Meeshe and you to cherish forever
:)

Oh I am so sorry to see this thread. Busy week I've only really been able to check in properly today. I add my prayers and hugs to everyone else's that Meeshe can be saved from leaving you just yet. Though as you say, his wellbeing and comfort is Number One. Remember to take care of yourself, too, it's hard to eat and do what we have to do at times like this but it's important that we stay healthy and calm as much for them as for ourselves. Good luck.:)

I am still numb, but wanted to let everyone who showed so much kindness to me and my "son" during his difficult time to know that Meeshe went to RB Friday morning at vet. Due to the results of the specialized outside lab work that indicated liver failure, vet concurred with my feelings that any further medical treatment would only prolong his suffering and detain the inevitable. Even a blood transfusion would only halt the FeLV+ destruction of his liver temporarily, and it would soon rear its ugly head to ravage his other organs. :(
I feel fortunate and blessed to have had him with us for this many years. I was astounded to learn (according to a fact sheet on FeLV from the vet's office) that 80% of cats depart within 2 to 3 years after diagnosis. He was FeLV+ from when I rescued him at about 6 months of age. I guess he beat the odds, and I am very thankful to have experienced the joy of knowing him and loving him so much. I hope his roomate, Muskrat (also FeLV+) is not too lonely without her "big brother", and that she continues to enjoy good health in spite of the odds stacked against her. I had a long talk with her about Meeshe, and explained that physically he is gone, but he is watching over her from RB. She can always view his grave from the screened-in porch where she resides; he is buried right next to Lily.
Blessings to everyone, and thank you for your caring sentiments, thoughts and prayers. Please know that your words have helped tremendously. I will try to formulate my thoughts and post a tribute in cat memorial to honour his life.

Meeewahh! My KatMa is trying to see through her tears to write to you on the passing of precious Meeshe.

Oh I am so sorry this had to happen. :( Better a dignified departure than a sad stay or painful passing. He went bravely to the Bridge with the sound of your gentle voice in his heart and he will treasure that until you meet again. Be kind to yourself.:)
