Well, Mario's doing pretty well-- all except for the nights.

At night, I've been unable to keep him from jumping up on my bed at night. We have a bed that he often lays in during the day upstairs and no matter how many times we tell him "No." and put him back down on the bed, he continues to jump up.

We've been having to put him a crate, which we'd rather not do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks! :)

From what I know of Italian Greyhounds and whippets, they LOVE beds. You say he has a bed he sleeps in during the day? Are you saying he won't sleep there at night but wants to sleep in your bed instead?

Yes, in fact he's playing with a toy on that bed right now.

We bring it upstairs at night and yes, he still wants to sleep in my bed.

I just want to know what the big deal is? Just let the little sweetheart sleep with you. That's all he wants!!!! To be near his human!!!!!

This comes from someone who absolutely loves to sleep with nice soft fur by my side and at my feet. I even plan on getting a bigger bed to make my sweethearts more comfy! LOL

Sorry if this makes anyone cring.

Once Sadie was able to sleep all night we let her sleep in our bed as an "occasional" thing. Then she starting sleeping with us everynight, but had to get down and sleep on her bed when we told her (of course she always snakes back into bed after we fall asleep). When we got Cincy, we decided that when she was old enough, she and Sadie could sleep together on the floor in our room. After all, Sadie just wanted to be close to another living thing, right? ( Sadie slept on the florr just fine at my sister-in-laws house with her two dogs)

Anyway, long story short, both girls sleep in bed, under the covers with us, and I wouldn't trade it for anything!!!:D

He slept in my bed the first night we brought him home.
I actually didn't mind it all that much, except the fact he had the rule of the bed. Eh!

I have a waterbed, and I think most of them do have these, but I ended up laying against the wooden panel at the side of the bed. When I did wake up there, I would push him over, but somehow, he'd always manage to slide back down and I ended up against that panel.

..then at 4:00 AM, I couldn't get back to sleep.. so I stayed awake and watched TV. ..Mario slept like a rock. LOL ;)

Finally, got up, walked around on my bed, and made himself comfortable on top of the covers and by my feet. :p

..maybe I'll have him another try and see how well I sleep tonight. Ehheh! That was the only problem: that I couldn't get much sleep.

I agree that this is a problem (suprise!). If you don't want the dog to rule the bed then he shouldn't.
A supportive bed is a must for this type of dog - a quilt or foam or bean bag type.
Make sure he can snuggle down into it and that he is warm enough and leave the bed downstairs at night. Happy dog, happy person - no problem.

Give in, give in!!! Resistance is futile! Go Mario go!!!!!!!

Hehe, sorry. I just know the best feeling in the world is sleeping with Reece on my legs, Shiloh on my chest, and Lolly curled up in between my arm and side.

Louie started out in his playpen (we got him at 7weeks) I was bound and determined to teach him to sleep in his own bed... He slept in his playpen for about a week ... My Husband turned to me one night and said, " Please, can he sleep in the bed. He's so small." To which I said, "Once he is up here He will be here for life, and he will only get BIGGER"... Louie is a Corgi and now 3yrs. and sleeps with us EVERY night even tho he and Daddy fight for "Bed Space" my Husband will pick him up and carry him to bed if he doesn't come willingly.:D :o

We've got Cookie in bed too. I'm not very happy but so far we've tolerated it. She snuggles up next to me, head on my tummy and sleeps many happy hours with us. She has her own basket next to daddy, but she won't sleep long there.

It's okay now that it's cold and I can tuck my feet under her warm body. I hope she has some common sense and stops when it gets warmer. She goes off the bed herself now if she's too hot and sleeps on the floor (no mom, there's no way you get me in that basket of mine! go and sleep in it yourself, or better, get dad in it!).

It's very crowded in bed, with mom and dad, Cookie and 2 cats.

My dogschool teacher is very much agains Cookie sleeping in bed because it gives her too much freedom and she doesn't see us as top dogs. So, we're now trying to get her at least of the couch... Not that this works, she's still there.

Guess I'm no help here. One look at the happy smile on my dogs face and than I know she's happy. If she's happy, I'm happy.

I can't help myself. Everyone tries to determine that the dog will sleep on the floor but they always end up in bed!

Carrie,
You know we all love you immensley and respect your advice but when it comes to Smelling our dogs Frito Feet and Sleeping in bed with them, we are all just hopeless! LOL

I have actually come to love smelling Dusty's feet (Dixie's don't smell quite as strong) as we cuddle in bed together. Although my husband likes to cuddle with the pups, he still won't smell their feet. I keep telling him they smell like Frito's but he says that is just a little further than he is will to go! I told him Carrie would be proud of you, but you don't know what your missing! ;)

Oh guys you are so lucky! You can get your dogs to walk all around your house following you everywhere, but I can't. My mum hates dog smell even though Leika doesn't smell bad! You can sleep with your dogs and snuggle against them. I can't either. Same problem:(. Well at least I have won some territory for Leika on the kitchen. She can get easily very cold so we let her sleep in the kitchen in the night. She has her very own basket and blanket. She snuggles and falls asleep and doesn't even wake up with the shatering my mum makes with the pans and stuff. Sometime (I'm so bad) when she is sleeping I open the kitchen door and she wakes then closes her eyes. Then I pick her up and she snuggles in my arms. It's so cute! :D

I hope Carrie doesn't read this, I sleep with Daisy every night.
However I don't have the problem of her taking over the bed. She has her own pillow and prefers her own spot. I will have to say that I must play with her first before we go to sleep it is a routine that we have got into, then she crawls up on her pillow, then later I pull her down into the bed, covers up to her neck and she sleeps like a rock the rest of the night and wakes up at 6:30
Perry on the other hand will not sleep on the bed, he is up and down and up and down, he prefers to sleep in his crate. He brings in three of his stuffed rabbits and is very content. We never hear a peep from him until morning.
I guess it's just an individual thing between dog and the person.

Well, looks like the canine side won this time. ;)

Last night I decided to give the "Mario in bed" sleeping arrangement another try. This time, I put a long pillow up against me, and then put Mario on the other side of that pillow. (This is my side, this is your side. :D
It worked out pretty well. He could still see me over the pillow, so he wouldn't be walking around the bed looking for me. And he had a pillow right there to sleep against. :)

I woke up once at night- probably because I fell asleep with the TV on (..wait, I don't remember seeing the end of that movie.. ) and he was all curled up against the pillow on the other side of me. I turned the TV off and fell back to sleep.

And finally, this morning, I woke up and found him against me.. not on the pillow. How he got there without waking me up is anyone's guess, but it didn't seem to be so bad, since I didn't wake up. If things keep going like that, Mario gets to sleep in my bed.

Candy, you think thats bad? You should see me at the shelter. I pick up every dog's feet that I'm with and push it straight against my nose :D

When we first got Drake, I was terrified of dogs. I do not know if you have heard the story, but pm me and I will tell it if you are interested. He had his own little area outside with a sturdy fence, dog house, and a shelter over his head. The weather wasn't cold and he got plenty of room to play and he got lots of attention from us. That only last one month. Andrew slowly convinced me to bring Drake in. It started as only a few minutes to a few hours to always. He was house broken in less than a week. The bedroom was offlimits, but that soon changed too. Andrew convinced me to let him come in a sleep on the floor. Yeah, like that worked! Drake would get on the bed and he would sleep with us. Till this very day he does. When Andrew is at home, he will lay with us for a while and then get on the floor. When Andrew is away, Drake does not leave my side. He is a bed hog, but I'm OK with that.

Looks like I'm joining the trend, after all. Seems most don't have a problem with canine and feline pets sharing the bed. ;)

Mm, I don't really want Mario to be the bed hog like he was the first night, but I think he'll get better with that pillow there.

Iggy, you can always push him or move him over if he is in your way. It will be much easier than pushing Drake! He's 90 some lbs.

Iggylove this is a critical time for you, if you decide now to let the dog on the bed you can only be mad at yourself later on if you're not getting sleep. If you keep the dog off the bed the dog will be fine, he just wants to see how spoiled he can be.

I let my dog sleep with me, and I'll take a few sleepless nights in exchange. If you do let Mario on the bed make sure he realizes that you get to pick your spot. Do you put him under the covers? My dog sleeps under her own blanket on my bed, that way she doesn't steal mine and it seems to keep her in one spot on the bed. She's part whippet and they love being under covers!!

My boyfriend lives with us now so I'm looking forward to the day I get a bigger bed. As far as I'm concerned Sadie has more rights to the bed then my boyfriend since he came into the picture 7 years later - fortunately he's very understanding and not a restless sleeper!

Everybody who has been around for awhile knows where I stand on this subject, which is sleeping with my dogs is sheer bliss. I have one who is a *spooner* and sleeps under the covers and one who sleeps on top of the covers. I can't think of anything that makes me happier than the snuggling and night-time and morning routines we share. Sleeping together is an art and generally it takes a while for everybody to get into sinc. At first I couldn't stand Tucker being so close as I could never fall asleep with even my husband touching me, but eventually it all seemed to come together. If I wanted to toss and turn a bit before I fall asleep, Tucker will pop into his dog bed for awhile. As soon as I drift off, back up and under the covers he will come. If I wake up, it doesn't bother me having him slapped up against me, in fact I then enjoy it. Hannah, the bed hog, can get herself into a position that takes up a bit too much space, but all I have to say is *Hannah move* and give her a nudge and she will reposition herself.

I've had Ghost for about 2 months now and she loves the bed...and next month we're getting another husky so we need a bigger bed...I've always since I was a kid had my dog sleep in bed with me...it's just a wonderful feeling...and very comforting...I have to admit though...when she's warm Ghost goes and sleeps on her pillow on the floor but she sneaks up every now and then during the night...she's so adorable :D

Iggylove, Just one look at Mario in your avatar tells me that he would definitely be in my bed! What a sweetie! Then again I am, and have always been, a softie for dogs (and cats) in my bed. Bella has been sleeping in my bed since she was housebroken. Most nights we spend are totally peaceful, but every now and then I wake up to find that she is hogging more than her share of space! :) I try to tell her to move, but when she's asleep she goes really DEEP (or maybe she is just pretending :D ). Anyway, after a gentle shove, we are back to normal again. I say, move over and make room for Mario! :D :D

My FurKids have ALL been in/on the bed Kritters :D...

Shadow, my beautiful 60# Shepherd/Husky (RB :( in '99) learned the art of sleeping on the bed her night of adoption at 9 months. She needed a pillow to be comfortable - If she wasn't able to push my head over to make room for both of us, she'd drape herself over my body to make do. I often awoke and discovered a limb or two numb from serving as her pillow overnight! Another favorite position was with her head draped over my neck - I would awaken to a faceful of fur and unable to raise my head. After Boots, the Kat, arrived, he slept in the bookcase headboard till he outgrew the book cubby-holes; then the two of them would share their bed with me.

Cinder arrived at 6 months of age and immediately adapted to our bed her first night. The Kat was stressed with the frisky newcomer and retreated to the top of the headboard for a few weeks, but slowly returned to sharing the bed. Cinder enjoys spooning beside me for tummy and neck rubs till I drift off... If it's cold enough, she'll submit to sleeping beside me under the covers till we warm up; then she'll slip out and cuddle above the covers.

Smokey arrived abused and abandoned  without a clue of house and sleeping manners . After one night in the basement, he graduated to sleeping in the bunkroom leashed to the bed. Next, he experimented with jumping up to join Cinder ON the bed - but panicked every time I moved. After sleeping under the bed for a week or so, he adjusted to my tossing and turning and began demanding his place on the bed!

Currently, the Kat has relinquished his claim  to a spot on the bed - too many big feet to contend with... He sleeps on the couch or sometimes the headboard. Smokey has adopted one of Shadow's :( old mannerisms - he wants a piece of the pillow! Being less fuzzy than Cinder ~ He likes sleeping under the covers! And...He's like an instant-on hot water bottle - a welcome bed-mate on chilly nights. Cinder curls on or around my feet, keeping them toasty from above the covers.

Positions sometimes change during the night, but nobody puts a paw on the floor till long after I crawl out in the morning and they're sure I'm not going to jump back in for more sleep.

My fondest childhood memories are those centered around my pets. The warmth of their furry bodies against mine, the comforting cadence of their rhythmic breathing in the quiet are memories I wouldn't trade for the world. And now, a zillion years later, they are still in the bed, and still giving me such comfort, it's indescribable!! Everyone, including the kitties Mr. B and Oliver, jockey for position. The signal that it's bedtime......??? When the toothbrush comes out! Yes, one swipe of the pearly whites and they RUN for the bed!:D Cody is usually at the foot of the bed; she's a Husky x and likes it cooler. Star loves to sleep between my legs strrrrrrrrrrretched out with Oliver curled in her stomach, and Mr. B is on my head. Thankfully, I a sleeper who curls into a ball and doesn't move. How could I anyway??:D

And of course, it was as a child, laying beside my doggie in bed, that I first discovered Frito Feet!!! Now what would life be without that heavenly scent!! And you GO Mario!!!:)

Loved all of your stories. Phred...your's was especially touching....:)

I wish I could sleep with my dogs, but 2 100+ lb St. Bernards and me and my hubby is too much for one bed to handle. Ususally Cleo and Sterling come up for about 10 minutes of cuddle time and then they hop down to their beds on the floor. When the alarm goes off in the morning tho watch out!! They are right there with a sloppy good morning kiss and nuzzle.:D :D

LOL! I can just imagaine trying to get 2 100 pounds St. Bernards in bed with you and hubby and those kisses must be
like a bath.

Sheba had bed rights for a winter a few years ago
till she started to blow coat.
Pepper is the only dog allowed to sleep on the bed,
and at 13 pounds, she can take over a bed. (she likes to
cuddle next to my hubby)
