This is KatMa AKA Susan who is the human Mom of Sasha the Cat. Her Paw-Paw AKA Murray and I are beside ourselves with worry as our little darling begins chemotherapy on Monday. Sasha has Feline Lymphoma.

Sasha was an abandoned kitty who cried all of the long, cold Montreal Winter of 1995. I searched and called but could not find her. Then in May of 1995 she heard me talking to a neighbour and came bounding across the street! I was so frightened--she could have been hit by a car.

Sasha jumped on my lap, gave me her lovely pussycat smile and started to purr. I was in love. July 18th that year Sasha had five beautiful kittens. We, with a neighbour, took care of her. She "boarded" with her babies at the neighbour's home. The neighbour built a safe place under the balcony for them and I fed her and got medical attention for Sasha & her babies. Later I found forever homes for her five kittens; when they were 8 weeks old, they went to forever homes. The neighbour and I shared Sasha; I had a key to her garage where Sasha slept at night in the laundy room. The Winter of 1995-96 she stayed indoors in the laundry room.

That January I had pneumonia and Murray went over every morning and night to feed her and spend time with her. He fell in love. These living arrangements worked fine right up until June 1996 when some bratty boys tried to steal her. That was when I realized my husband, Murray was 'in love' with her. He brought her into the house and said "that's it; she's an inside kitty now"

Although Murray and I lived with my dog and my three cats -- he never had a cat and was afraid of them. When Murray and I began seeing each other in 1984, he had his dog, Chuckie and I had my dog, Bobby. On September 21st 1985 my kitten Tiggy [whom I call The Best Cat in the Universe] came into my home. Tiggy was the birthday gift to my son, Mark who wanted a cat. Tiggy arrived exactly one week before Mark's 11th birthday. Later Princess joined us and then Paddy Paws, a lost cat found by Bobby the Dog. Paddy was about 4 when Bobby found him Labour Day 1986--now Mark and I had one dog and three cats! Murray and I were 'an item' and we knew it was just a matter of time before all of us would be a 'blended' family.

Sadly, Paddy Paws had acute renal failure in January 1996 and it was so quick that he died two days later on January 16th. I was stunned and could not function. That very same year on September 9th, Bobby the Dog who was 17-1/2 years old went to Rainbow's Bridge to be with Chucky and Paddy-Paws. It was so, so hard that year.

Sasha was a big, bright ray of sunshine in our lives. Tiggy didn't think so. Princess wasn't sure of this interloper either. Tiggy and Sasha never became friends. She had known hard times as an abandoned cat -- dogs and other cats were enemies. Bobby tried no end to win her over but Sasha just could not trust another cat let alone a DOG! Princess liked to stay away from the cats but she loved Bobby the Dog. Princess loved her people too...but not her cat siblings!

My darling Tiggy went to Rainbow's Bridge on September 5, 2000 -- shortly after his 15th birthday which was on August 17th 2000. I still mourn him -- the cat who absolutely stole my heart. He was a wee five-week old kitten when he captured me; he thought I was his Mommy. To our great sorrow Princess [who was one year younger than Tiggy] went to find Tiggy, Bobby, Chuckie and Paddy-Paws on October 4th 2001.

Our Sasha, whom we just adore, will begin taking the drug Chlorambucil AKA Leukeran® GlaxoSmithKline. She will have one dosage beginning Monday every second day for a total of 12 doses. According to her doctor and the consulting oncologist cats tolerate chemo very well [apparently better than humans] and this particular course of chemo is well tolerated by domestic felines. We hope they are right and that our little girl will go into remission.

Pet Lovers in this Forum -- please focus or pray for our darling Sasha and for Murray and I to be strong for her. Thank you.

incorporating Doxorubicin, Elspar, and Vincristine into the protocol, rather than relying on Leukeran alone.

Be on the look out for secondary bacterial infections after the treatments begin. Also inquire as to supportive drugs that can be used such as acid blockers and anti-nausea drugs.

I hope Sasha does extremely well with her treatment, and suffers no side effects, and that she will indeed go into remission and have many wonderful years left with you, thank you for sharing such a beautiful story, I was saddened to read about Sasha's condition, but wish her well and hugs to you both, this is a tough time ahead for you all, but the power of PT is with you and hopefully can work yet another miracle, along with a little help from you know who.:)

I'm sorry about Sasha. I have had two cats with cancer. Smokey the Elder's chemo was doxorubicin and thalidomide(!). This bought her almost a year with a very aggressive cancer which would have killed her in six weeks.

Pink Nose recently finished four rounds of mitoxantrone, for a tumor in his ear canal. In August he goes for a follow-up ultrasound.

Sasha's therapy must be quite mild, since it is so frequent.

My sample of two supports the idea that cats tolerate chemo quite well. Pink Nose didn't even lose his whiskers!

Pink Nose sends head bumpies and purrs and tells Sasha to be good for the doctor. He was such a good patient he has a fan club at the oncologists'!

This pic is Pink Nose after his last chemo, showing off his stylish green bandage and full set of whiskers.:)

Oh, and tell Sasha I know several cancer survivors, albeit human ones, so to keep her spirits up, as this is not always a death sentance even though that's what people think.

Bonjour Sasha!

I'm sorry to hear that Sasha needs this treatment, but I have heard that animals tolerate it better then we do. I hope that proves to be the case for Sasha. She is such a lovely girl and we don't see enough of her. ;) Please let us know how she is getting on.

SASHA had her first chemo treatment this morning at 9:15 a.m. ET today. We have all of our fingers and toes crossed as do all of our family and friends and all the pets in our extended family have their paws crossed too.

Sasha is busy scratching her chair right now. She seems fine but it is only 9:54 a.m. ET and so far, Sasha is having no reaction to the chemo. Thank goodness for that!

Thank you, the people and pets in this Forum, for your kindness and caring -- and for the treatment advice. I printed out those tips and after Sasha's third chemo session we will discuss this with her doctors.

Mew, I had my second session on Wednesday and seem to be handling it well.:)

My purr~ents are so happy 'cause I've been drinking my water & eating. After Chemo 1 I had no desire for food or water which frighented my humans so much[they are so frail].

I do still vomit but my purr~ents know the food and water I get down does give me some nourishment. My Paw-Paw was so thrilled because I made a poop. Humans are so easy to make happy:D !!

Since my normal antics still interest me -- like jumping on the beds, looking out the windows, playing with my feather toys and watching the Nightly Business Report and various sports on TV with Paw-Paw -- my KatMa & Paw-Paw think this is a very good sign.

Thank you, dear friends in this Forum, for encouraging me and cheering for me during this chemotherapy. Purrrrrr, you are giving my KatMa and Paw-Paw great comfort.

I know us humans are very frail and we worry so and yes you are right some of the littlest things make us happy because they are important. Please continue to eat and drink and use your litter box. I believe tomorrow will be your 3rd treatment. Good luck sweetheart and continue to rest and enjoy your nightly TV watching. Hi, Sweetheart! So glad to hear you tolerated your second chemo treatment well.

Tell you parents not to worry if you lose your desire for food. My father and an aunt (his sister) both beat cancer. The chemo treatments were worse than the disease (they said). They both lost their appetites and their hair. After the treatments, they got their appetites back and their hair grew in thicker than before.

Prayers for your continued success!!! (and HUGS too):)

I've been off-air for a few days and have returned to find this thread and pictures of the beautiful Sasha, who is having chemo. I wish you well, beautiful Sasha and hope the chemo is not causing you any distress. I hope you make a full recovery, you are such a pretty girl and so sweet natured, this shines through in your pictures. Focus on yourself, your humans will cope, we are made of stronger stuff than we look.Try to eat and drink, especially drink water, don't let yourself dehydrate. Don't worry too much about the business report, it all goes in cycles, what goes down will come back up. If you have any shares in catfood companies or furry toy with squeakies manufacturers, don't you fret yourself right now. All will be well, and so will you, a little down now, but up again soon to be sure. Hang in there, precious one, we are all thinking of you and praying for your recovery:) :)

Our darling Sasha's five kittens were born on July 18th 1995 so today they are 10 years old!!!

Sasha was approximately 14 months old which means she most likely was born May 1994. We celebrate Murray and Sasha's birthdays the same day -- May 8th.

Sasha had Chemo # 4 on Sunday. She vomits at least once a day; chemo can cause vomiting for felines and for humans. She seems to be her very happy self and we try not to worry too much. Sasha sees her doctor at least once a week at the clinic; her doctor also comes to Sasha's palace to check on her.

Photo of Sasha nursing her babies in 1995. They were sooooo adorable.

Yes we live in the Inner West suburbs of Sydney about 8km from the city centre. Where are your family?

We all hope Sasha is continuing to make progress, and note that she has now had her 4th chemo and it makes her feel unwell at the time and tired but is otherwise her usual frolicking self and eating fairly well. This is great news and Cleo and Colette send their best purrs and nose-touchies. Colette had dentistry today, three extracted and those that are left:( cleaned so she is now like this:D She's had a little snack and returned a message to all her well-wishers and is now resting in front of the fire, meditating and sending prayers out to all the less fortunate cats on the forum who are unwell at the moment, including a special wish for Sasha. Stay strong Sasha, you are such a sweetie.:)

Today I had my chemotherapy treatment # 6. I felt pretty good after treatment # 5 on the 19th of July. Since the 19th of July my appetite is back which thrills my purrents.

My Paw-Paw has just telephoned the oncologist to get an opinion because my last three pee-pees have traces of blood. My KatMa is acting very calm to keep me unstressed; however I know KatMa is freaking out! Paw-Paw reminded her that I've have UTIs before and this is probably the case now.

Your kind words and caring certainly are good medicine for me [and for my purrents too]. We can't thank you enough for your concern and caring. Mew-mew, all pets know the best people on earth -- the salt of the earth -- are those who love, protect and care for pets.

I am sure KatMa is very worried as is Paw-Paw, but I am sure that it isn't anything serious, perhaps a UTI or I am sure that your body goes through quite a few changes during your treatments so it may be normal. Anyway congratulations on successfully going through treatment #6. As always you and KatMa and Paw-Paw are in our prayers. Please keep us posted as to your progress beautiful girl. Tonight Murray and I had dinner at a local Chinese restaurant. Murray's fortune cookie said:

You will be receiving very good news in the next few days.
We hope this means we will learn our Sasha is winning her battle against lymphoma!

Sasha developed a UTI and is now taking antibiotics. This means our little pussycat is on the following medications:

Leukeran [Chemo] every other day
Prednisone 5mg once a day
Novo-Spiroton [Spironolactone] 6.25mg [diuretic] twice a day
Clavamox 62.5mg twice a day
Felovite II [vitamin paste, tastes like tuna]

Quite a bunch of meds for one little 8 lb. pussycat! Sasha's veterinarian is on holiday outside Canada for two weeks; however, she is being closely monitored by her purrents and by the veterinarian-oncologist. Since Sash now has the antibiotic Clavamox added yesterday the specialist has changed her chemo from every other day to one treatment every third day.

Sasha hates the Novo-Spiroton which is verrry minty. It is the hardest one to get her to swallow. We give her a little bit of Felovite II right after she swallows this, which helps calm her. And, we give her a teaspoon of vanilla ice cream...her favourite treat (right after her home-made chicken bits).

That is where we stand right now. We are focusing on our Sasha regaining her health and beating the cancer.

Thank you for your kindness. What would we do without the support of the fine people and wonderful pets in this Forum? I don't think we could cope without you pulling for Sasha.

Barbara

I am sorry to hear Sasha has an UTI on top of it. This may be a consequence of the chemo I suppose. The meds do not only kill the bad cancer cells but also good ones who fight infections.

A lot she has to go through. But it sounds as if she is medically in good hands- and being with you and her dad must be so much comfort for her and confirm her will to fight the disease.:)

Well, our little girl's blood works taken July 25th are encouraging. Sasha is holding her own with the chemotherapy. We are ever hopeful our darling will beat this wicked illness.

Sasha is now taking clavamox [for a total of 21 days] as she has a severe UTI. Lots of meds for one little girl...

At times we are scared silly; other times we feel it is a good day. To the other Pets who are ill, we wish you all speedy recoveries. What Murray and I know is: everyday with Sasha is a good day. And we know you all feel exactly the same: everyday with our beloved pet is a good day.

Oh, Sasha, I am only now finding out about the battle that you have been fighting so bravely. I don't have any kitties of my own, so there are a few here of whom I am very fond, and you, my dear are one of them.

Sasha, you must keep taking your meds, even though you hate them. You have so many people here wishing you well and praying that you will soon get the good news of good numbers on those tests. When you are on the mend, we will throw one big party to celebrate.

We hope that Katmaw lets you come on the puter more often, because we so enjoy hearing from you. *Every day with Sasha* is a good day for us too, you know.

Sasha, I know what you must be enduring because my husband also had Lymphoma and went through Chemotherapy. I'm elated to say that he beat it and is in remission, which is what I hope and pray for you, precious girl. Don't be vain and fret if you lose your beautiful Calico fur; it will grow back! :) Blessings to you and yours in coping with this difficult ordeal, and may you keep on fighting, darling . . . we are cheering for you!:) :)

Mew, my secretary who is also my KatMa is sitting here, crying. She and Paw-Paw and me are so touched by the concern of people and pets in this Forum.

I am holding my own. My UTI is a very wicked one and another antibiotic has been added to boot this out. So, two antibiotics for 21 days...

My specialist had stopped my chemotherapy; she and my personal veterinarian will consult on Monday to decide when chemo will resume. The specialist wants to get the UTI under control -- I'm on lots of meds. I'm also not taking the diuretic until after that consultation on Monday but still take the prednisone which I will take for the rest of my life.

KatMa is worried but Paw-Paw is freaking out because my appetite is very depressed. I get a 'buffet' every meal -- all kinds of foods in my bowl. Whenever I eat any food Paw-Paw celebrates. You'd think I've gone into remission by how he reacts. Paw-Paw gives me goodies like teaspoons of ice-cream [yum]. My KatMa makes me "jell-O" which is the natural drippings of roasted chicken. KatMa chills this to get the fat to rise to the top and set. Then she skims off the fat. The remainder is a nice geletin which is Chicken "jell-O" I just cannot resist this.

Tonight is Shabbat dinner which means a nicely stuffed, roasted chicken -- and my "jell-O". Can't wait. Usually this makes enough "jell-O" for five days. Tonight KatMa will figure out how to get enough for one week so I don't have to miss out until the next Shabbat dinner is made.

Well, KatMa is feeling much better now; she has stopped crying. I told her, mew-meeeOw, that if she wrote what I'm dictating, she'd feel much better.

All of you darling pets who are under treatment right now, please know that my purr~ents and I are cheering for your speedy recovery.

purrrs, Sasha

Sasha, it was so good of your KatMa to transcribe your dictation. Probably took her a bit longer than usual because she had to be wiping her eyes and blowing her nose a bit. But we appreciate all her efforts as it was so good to hear your voice once again.

Oh, I didn't hear it? Strange, I was certain I did.

Sasha, I am pleased to know that your parents are going to such extents to find food that will pique your appetite. Actually the thought of that stuffed roasted chicken piqued mine quite a bit. And chicken Jell-O, what a unique idea. Your Katma is so inventive.

Now you get plenty of rest and don't wear yourself out purring. We know you want to keep everybody's spirits up, it is just your nature. We will be praying for you and Katma and PawPaw. Please continue with the uppydates as you are able.

Sorry to hear poor Sasha is having to take so many different medicines. Lots of love and home-cooked treats are sure to help. If prayers and love can heal, she sure has her fair share from her loving family and all of us here, to help with her healing. One day at a time, I guess, time and patience play their part too. Keep getting better, Sasha:) :)

Dear Rachel, TopCat3, furrykidsmother and
Everyone who encourages/pulls for me:

Thank you so much for encouraging mewme. KatMa felt much better today [she and Paw-Paw worry so much about me] and spent some time at her favourite website: cat/dog/pet of the day.

Reading about wonderful pets & the humans who love them, seeing photos -- all this gives my KatMa respite.

Mew, I'm a fighter and I plan on staying here for a very long time. I keep mewling that to my purrents. They love me so much which is why they are frightened.

I love it when my KatMa reads all of the kind words sent to me in this Forum -- and, purrrrrrr, I can feel the love. It wraps around me like a warm blanket and keeps me comforted and safe.

Thanks to every one of you, I feel stronger today. My MEOW was louder and my Paw-Paw was so thrilled.

Tomorrow KatMa is going to take new photos of me and post in this Forum. I see my veterinarian at 1 o'clock tomorrow and KatMa will post a report.

xoxoxo purrrrs,
Sasha

We have been busy with our little girl. Sasha still has the UTI -- and she is on two anti-biotics. Sasha also takes an appetite stimulant.

However, Sasha has trouble eating. Her mouth is sore and the specialist says this is not from all the meds. She thinks Sasha may have a toothache. However, in her weakened condition Sasha can't have an anesthetic to clean or repair her teeth. Sasha is now eating mostly prescription kitten food which is very rich. She needs the food to keep her strength but foods high in fat are not the ideal diet. Her regular prescription food is very low fat as is the home-made chicken and chicken Jell-O I make her.

The specialist said we are to give her whatever she will eat because her strength is an issue in her battle against both the UTI and the cancer.

We are frightened [as you can imagine] but our little girl is such a sweetheart. Sasha is fighting very hard and we can only hope...

Once the UTI is cleared up she will be back on chemotherapy. We hold our breath many times each day -- and everyday with Sasha is a good day, may we have her for many, many more days.

I took some photos but have not downloaded to my computer. Perhaps in the next few days I'll do that.

Thank every one of you, humans and pets, who are pulling for our little girl. Your support means so much to us.

Susan,

Could Sasha's mouth sores be from the chemo? Sometimes when humans have chemo they get mouth sores. The chemo affects fast growing cells in the body - that is how they attack the cancer. The mucous membranes in the mouth and down the esophagus are also fast growing cells and the chemo may also attack them as an unwanted side effect. It might be worth asking the vet oncologist about before they go messing around with her teeth. There are meds that people use to relieve the discomfort and enable them to eat better.

Poor Sasha having to go through this! I've had chemo and it is NO FUN! I can't imagine how a little kitty deals with it.

My gang of eight and I are keeping fingers and paws crossed that Sasha comes through this with flying colors.

Can you ask for Buprenex for the mouth pain, whether it is a tooth or a sore, it could help. If that is the problem with the appetite, it will help immediately, if it doesn't then the problem is something else.

Also, can you get her on A/D + nutrical or Feline Rebound liquid Diet?
These have added calories and can be syringed.

Hoping for positive outcome for Miss Sasha.

Be strong for her.

Thank you, Susan, for taking time to update us on how Sasha is doing. The news about her mouth sores is distressing. I too would think that they must be a result of the chemo. And of course we we will pray the this UTI can finally be overcome so that Sasha can concentrate on battling that cancer.

Dear Sasha, your loving spirit and kindness has long been noticed and appreciated here at Pet Talk. You have so many fans and probably many, like me, have taken it for granted that you would always be here for us. The thought of you being sick and having to deal with the many complications and exhaustion of fighting to be well again is almost too much to bear. We just love you, little girl. I only wish we could put all those good feelings for you into a pill because if we could, it would be a miracle cure for all your ills. We worry too about your Katma and PawPaw, because you are the world to them. We will pray for all of you. Just don't give up, pretty girl. I am looking forward to seeing those pictures of *our Sasha*.

Update on our Precious Sasha the Queen Calico Cat

On Tuesday [Aug 9th] Sasha was examined by her doctor. Our darling has not been eating or drinking very much. Upon examination our very gentle veterinarian told us that now it is the time to let Sasha eat and drink whatever she likes—things like cream, ice-cream, tuna, salmon and other goodies she loves which have not been a part of her very healthy prescription cat food diet. Sasha’s doctor said now it is time for us to totally spoil our precious little girl and to make sure the rest of her days are as comfortable as possible, with all of the things she loves.

Sasha will not resume chemotherapy. The diagnosis is the cancer has spread to her bladder—our precious Sasha’s days are nearing the end. We will love her, spoil her, hold her and treasure what time we have left together. Sasha's veterinarian will make house calls to check on our darling. Most important of all, she will tell us when it is time to let Sasha go in peace to prevent any suffering.

We are heart-broken with this sad news but have resolved to make each moment Sasha is with us a good moment for her. We believe “any day with Sasha is a good day”. We hope there are many more.

We are devastated knowing we will lose our baby. Thankfully the support of all of the pets and people of this Forum gives us strength. It means so much that you take the time to help us through this. Sasha feels your love and so do we.

So very, very sorry to read this latest news of Sasha. She is such a beauty, such a gentle little soul. Do you think Sasha might like some softly scrambled eggs made with real cream? Perhaps with tiny flakes of salmon or tuna in. Nutritious, easy to digest, easy on the sore mouth. I hope she enjoys whatever she manages to eat and your days together are special. At times like this the rest of the world seems to recede and time almost stands still as every moment is savoured and treasured. It's really living in the moment, isn't it? Very precious times. Susan my (our) hearts are breaking right along with yours. I hope that you will have so much more time with her. Have you talked to the vet? 08-11-2005, 11:21 AM
Yes, Sasha has been on appetite enhancers for the last two weeks. They no longer work. We are now making her as comfortable as possible, keeping her hydrated, and offering Sasha all of her favourites. Sometimes she eats but each time, less and less.

We are fortunate that Sasha will not suffer the way my late Mother did. In Canada we are allowed to give our darling pets the gift of legalised voluntary euthanasia. Sadly, even though my late Mother had legal documents requesting this very same right, she suffered terribly. Quality of life was not honoured.

One day, perhaps even in my lifetime, Canadians will have the legal right to honour one's wishes for legal voluntary euthanasia in cases where there is absolutely no hope of a cure. Why my Mother could not have her specified, written wishes honoured will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Our darling Sasha, fortunately, will not suffer my beloved Mother's fate.

I am so sorry to read about Sasha!!! Despite things going the way they are now, just being there for Sasha is the absolutely best thing(for both of you)! She KNOWS that you love and will gently care for her. When my Boo had come to this stage, the one thing she loved to lick from my finger was butter!!! It made me happy to know I still was able to do something for Boo that she still was able to enjoy! Will keep Sasha and you close in thoughts and prayers!!!

kb2yjx,

I will try butter. Sasha's doctor has prescribed another appetite simulant. I'm leaving right now to pick it up. Hopefully it will help my baby and she'll eat some of her treats.

Thank you, everyone & everypet for your kindness.

I sure hope the new stimulant will increase her appetite. I remember when my Mom's cat wasn't eating much (she had mouth cancer), she would enjoy licking whipped cream off my finger. C'mon Sasha please eat. You need to regain your strength. You still have memories to make with KatMa & PawPaw and you need to feel a bit better in order to do that. We are pulling for you sweetheart!

To the above I can only add that my thoughts and prayers are with you as always, and I know how difficult your fight has been, darling Sasha, and how painful for your Ma & Pa to feel so helpless in trying to make you better . . . do try to eat a little bit of something to sustain you, if it is your wish. I just came home and read the update and everyone's loving, caring messages, to which I add my own. This is a very precious, special and private heartache time for you and you are brave to share it with us. If it sustains you, please know that most, if not all of us have been through this at some time and are feeling our own pain again alongside you and I am trying to send feelings of support across the airwaves. Sasha, rest quietly with Mamma and bask in her love and caresses. Her heart is broken into a million pieces so that you may take some of it with you when you leave. Look out for a naughty blue point Siamese with a loud purr at the Rainbow Bridge. She will come to meet you. Tell her I still love her and think of her and treasure the memories of our last day together. Along with all the others who have gone before, she will show you all the sunny spots, the special places where the butterflies flutter about, where all the tastiest treats are to be found, and introduce you to the PetCare Angels who cuddle and stroke and play with you. It will be lovely there, lovelier than you can ever imagine. You will feel well, have the energy to frisk and frolic, and the appetite to enjoy the nectar of the gods in that wonderful place. Be happy, be peaceful, go gently. :( :)

Just checking in and wondering how Sasha is doing today. Did the stimulant allow her to eat any of her favorite things? She has been, as always, in my thoughts and prayers and I hope that she is having a good day today. I know everyday you have with her is a good day, I just hope she is feeling better today.

I call this photo Purrrrfection!!!

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid181/p898d0c373fb65e70678d8e00b3e36d8c/f2dab73c.jpg

Photo of Sasha, taken yesterday. Our darling is amazing! Sasha is still fighting and we are feeling so much better. After I picked up new appetite stimulator prescription pills and we gave her one -- big improvement! About 45 minutes after that pill was in her system it was as if an "appetite" switch was turned on. Sasha began eating & drinking:

Turkey, salmon, ice-cream, prescription kitten food, water, milk, 5% cream and Waltham's kitten/cat milk starting from around 6:30 p.m. [on and off] until midnight. We figure if you put all the food into a 5.8 ounce tin, she ate at least that if not more!!! Plus about 4 ounces of 5% cream and maybe 5 ounces of skim milk and then water every so often -- we're elated!

Sasha is comfortable right now, enjoying feline life which means she is sleeping well, purring, greets us, responds to her name by a little flick of her tail, jumps on the beds, and in general is surveying her Palace and estate grounds.

Her [our] veterinarian telephoned early evening to report on her consult with the veterinarian internist/oncologist. Sasha has, as reported yesterday, reached the end of her medical treatment and will now have meds that make her comfortable and allow her to live a happy pussy-cat life. We hope we get many more days but realistically know that her time is day-by-day. We treasure every nano-second our little girl is happy and comfortable and with us. We have promised Sasha she shall not suffer and we will honour that promise.

Another photo of our darling. Fri Aug 12 2005, 06:30pm ET --
Sasha was surveying the front of her Palace grounds [looking out of her human brother, Mark's window] when I called her name. She turned around to acknowledge me. Mark is away right now from his home-base in Pasadena, CA so is unaware of the further developments re: Sasha's health. Mark and fiancee Cherry live very far from Montreal, Canada...but Mark did fly in to visit Sasha in May.

We are blessed: today is another day with Sasha which means it is a good day!

Thank you so much for your support. It is helping our darling little girl fight and stay with us. You are the best and we are so blessed to have human and pet friends pulling for Sasha.

Sasha, our thoughts and prayers have been with you every day. I know it's a difficult time for your meowmie and your paw-paw; I've been through the exact same situation with my RB Goldie a couple of years ago and I remember how tough it was. Stay strong while you can, enjoy the special treats and know that you are loved and cherished. When the time comes, it will be hard, but we know we have to let you go to the bridge. My Goldie will show you the way. It's hard to type with LES, gentle bumples coming your way from the M's.

Oh my, I am just catching up with the past two days, and I don't know what to say that hasn't been said already. You know how much I love Sasha, who has connected to the soul within so many of us. Her pictures reflect the words she has spoken so eloquently on this board, which though she may have received help with the typing, undoubtedly came straight from her. That she is able to give KatMa and PawPaw some *good days* is another reflection of her one last gift to those she loves.

This is a poem that Sasha may want us to reflect on....

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

-- Unknown

Dear Sasha, please know that I am thinking of you this morning as I do every day. You are never far from my heart and mind. I'm hoping that the food you are able to consume is giving you the needed energy to survey your territory and give you Katma and PawPaw all kinds of indications of how special they are to you. You know how they love that and these are moments they treasure.

Oh, and thank you for posing for those pictures. You gave it your best and you look so sweet. I can see the sadness in your face though, and I wish I could make that go away along with the awful illness you have had to endure.

Thank you too Sasha for letting me think of you as one of my special kitty friends. Can you tell I'm crying? I am. I'm sorry. It's just that you are so brave and so is your Katma and your PawPaw.

I hope nobody else reads this but you, Sasha, because I think you will understand, but others might conclude something different. I love you.

Susan, I am sorry I having been lending as much support as a lot have. I read this thread everytime I see there is a new reply. I have found it difficult to find the right words as words are just not enough now. I went though this same thing a little over 2 years ago with my calico so this really hits home and makes it that much more difficult to know what to say. I know for me at the time nothing made me feel better. My girls (both calicos) and I are holding you, Sasha and you husband close to our hearts in these days. We are hoping beyond hope and praying Sasha shows everyone just what love can do and shocks everyone with a complete turn around. No matter what she will know that she is loved to the fullest extent of this universe and beyond. Sending hugs to you, your husband and Sasha from your neighbors in Ontario.

Rachel and the muttly crew
submitted in this thread a poem for Sasha entitled:
"The Last Battle"

I thought all pet lovers would appreciate this poem:

THE LITTLE CAT ANGEL

THE GHOST of a little white kitten
Crying mournfully, early and late,
Distracted St. Peter, the watchman,
As he guarded the heavenly gate.
"Say, what do you mean," said his saintship,
"Coming here and behaving like that?"
"I want to see Nellie, my missus,"
Sobbed the wee little ghost of a cat.
"I know she's not happy without me,
Won't you open and let me go in?"
"Begone," gasped the horrified watchman,
"Why the very idea is a sin;
I open the gate to good angels,
Not to stray little beggars like you."
"All right," mewed the little white kitten,
"Though a cat I'm a good angel, too."
Amazed at so bold an assertion,
But aware that he must make no mistake,
In silence, St. Peter long pondered,
For his name and repute were at stake,
Then placing the cat in his bosom
With a "Whist now, and say all your prayers,"
He opened the heavenly portals
And ascended the bright golden stairs.
A little girl angel came flying,
"That's my kitty, St. Peter," she cried.
And, seeing the joy of their meeting,
Peter let the cat angel abide.

This tale is the tale of a kitten
Dwelling now with the blessed above,
It vanquished grim Death and High Heaven
For the name of the kitten was Love.

I wrote this tonight -- a poem which reflects my view on what a pet wants from a human. Poetry and prose are one way I express my feelings. Naturally, the worry we feel about our darling Sasha needs to come out and writing is the balm. I've penned many other poems regarding pets [and other topics too].

So, for all the Pets in this Forum and everywhere else, here is the poem entitled "Promise Me"

Susan, that poem truly sums up what kind of commitment we all made to our cats(dogs, too)when we first found, adopted, or however they came into our lives. Several days before my beloved Boo died, we had our talk. I told her: you are not going to get better, I cannot make you better, and you are not going to live forever. But I promise you there will be no pain, no suffering. I promise that you will leave this life with the dignity that you had all your life. I miss her so much...

My dearest Sasha: Your Meowmie tells me that your time on earth is coming to an end and that makes my heart break in two. What a beautiful kitty you are and you've had such a happy life and such a loving home. When your time comes, I know that all the pet angels will be there to greet you and show you around. I hope that's not too soon, though. Your Meowmie has given me purrmission to put your picture up on my "wall of fame" at work along with the poem she wrote. That way, I'll be able to see you everyday and wonder how you are enjoying the sweet grasses of the RB.

For now, I send you kisses from BC and pray that your last days on earth will be peaceful ones.

Today Sasha ate and drank a little. Not as much as we hoped she would, but she did so that is good.

Karen Thank you for the tip re the "sent" items. I deleted many and perhaps now PMs will arrive.

slick We watch very carefully. Sasha is mostly comfortable, not in pain [we feel]. She still enjoys pussycat life -- looking out windows to survey her palace grounds, listening to the crickets and birds, eating & drinking [not very much, but trying], sitting on her Paw-Paw's lap, cuddling with me. Our darling is still with us; we've had today with her...and means today was good.

Sasha, this message was so hard to read. But it is good to know that you are comfortable and your parents are keeping a very close watch on you. I will try to locate what Boo told a communicator about life and death. It is so beautiful!! I have ot leave for work, will be back later!! We all continue to send you our prayers. Love, Sandra and the Clan

Dear Sasha and your purrents,

It seems to me that Father Time is being kind and slowing down for you and that every moment, every little thing that happens is becoming magnified, making for an intensely personal and special time and creating precious memories for the future. For you all, the whole world is condensed into your room and all the other stuff outside in the larger world holds very little relevance. It's at times like this we realise what is truly important, what really matters.

I hope your remaining time together now continues to be filled with the love and sweetness that has so clearly come across in your messages and has touched us all. I send my love to you all and wish you peace and joy in the days to come. You and your purrents are very special, loving people and the world needs more like you.

Take care,
From all of us at the TopCat household.
Hugs and kisses, head bumps and purrs

The oncologist suspended Smokey the Elder's chemo in March 1999 because of a suspicious ultrasound. She thrived for nine more months, only declining in the last week. Chemo is rough on a cat, even though they don't often show it. I hope Sasha will take full advantage of her remaining time to become more spoiled than ever.

Back in 2002, my dear white tortie Miss BooBoo Kitty, was going thru a rough time. I really thought her time had come. We contacted an animal communicator, Kate Reilly, to see what was going on. I was getting upset that Boo was not eating. Via Kate, Boo told Kate, that my getting upset because she was not eating UPSET her! Boo felt that it was no big deal that she was not eating. Boo also spoke of teaching me how to let go. Then she said something absolutely beautiful: Life is such a beautiful continuum, we are all woven into the tapestry of time. We are never forgotten. All is perfecet- if I don't eat-OK-if I do eat -OK. Once I got my act together, things were better. Boo did not leave then, but in May, 2004.
Kate said she was always amazed at the vocabulary that the animals used. There were times SHE had to look words up. And they were used correctly. Unfortunately, she no longer communicates with cats and dogs, only larger animals.
I hope this helps. Hugs to Sasha!!! Love, Sandra

These creatures are such incredible teachers, we just need to take the time to listen.

Aw, li'l sweetie. So glad that Sasha lapped up some yummy cream. Yummy on the tummy. When I was feeding the ferals at my other house, in the winter I'd give them cream or if I ran out of it, milk w/a dollop of butter in it. You should've seen them lap it up. Plus it helped to put some fat on them and keep their coat shiny. I'm so touched by this post and I'm glad that things are going a little better.

Blessings,
M

Our little girl is fighting and holding on. Sasha is much thinner but she is eating, drinking, and even though she tires very easily, Sasha does continue to jump into bed with us.

Sasha likes to dine with us at dinner time; she is sooooo cute, sitting like the Queen she is, all regal -- waiting for bits of food from our plates.

We figure if Sasha runs to greet us, checks on us during the day to see what we're up to, and wants partake in our dinners, then she is enjoying life. Sasha still loves to sit in the windows of her Palace and survey her realm.

As long as our darling is enjoying feline life and is not in pain -- we are thankful for every nano-second.

We hope for many more days...your support helps us and we thank you for caring about our little girl.

KatMa & Paw-Paw AKA Susan and Murray
