Hi everyone. As many of you know, I moved from Michigan to Texas not too long ago. We rent a house in a neighborhood that's not the greatest, and there's this neighbor right across the street from me that has a pit mix who has a litter of puppies, about 5 or more cats, and the homeowners are former drug abusers and dealers. The owners of the dog have no electricity or water. They are BAD NEWS and I don't think that theres' any negotating with them at all.
Anyway, here's my dillema. They have this pit mix who has had a litter of puppies. They have no fenced in yard, in fact, they don't even have a front door, so the mom dog (who I have appropiately named Jolly) and all her puppies roam the neighborhood. I can call the animal control or the humane society, but it's almost a guarantee that mom dog will be euthanized due to her being a pit mix. She's a VERY young (prob no more then 10 months old) and sweet, friendly dog....she's good with cats, other dogs, she's good with kids (from what i've seen) and she's got a great temperment. She has mange of some sort, because her hair is missing in large patches and im sure it's from fleas because she's infested with them. She also most likely has worms or giardia because she has loose stools all the time. She also isn't spayed, obviously since she's got a litter of pups.
Whenever I take my dogs for a walk, she comes with. She stayes with me and the dogs, even though she's not on a leash. She listens really well, when I turn a corner and she's not paying attention, all I do is let out a little whistle and she turns and comes to where I am. When she strayed too far in front of me on walks, all I do is tell her to come here and she listens...she turns around and comes to me and remains closer to the dogs and I. When there's another person walking their dog and she wants to visit, I tell her no when she starts to walk towards the other person, and she listens to me and continues to follow me. She's a REALLY good dog, will make an amazing pet for someone but I can't have her for two reasons:
1) her owners may do property damage if I take her, or they may steal her back once I get her vet care.
2) I really don't want 3 dogs. And even if we were to get a third dog, I really want either a GSD or a golden...so not that I don't love Jolly, but I really don't want her and I don't have the finances for a dog who will most likely need worming, need all her vacs, need heartworm test and preventative, and flea preventative.
What I want to do is take a walk with my dogs and get Jolly to follow me (which she automatically will if she happens to be home) , have my fiance or one of his family members meet me and pick her up. But we will have no place to take her once we get her. Is there anything we can do to get her out of that hell-hole she now lives in, and into the wonderful home she deserves? Is there anyone in TX who would be willing to foster? I'd be willing to drive her to a new home, but I'd need to make sure someone would be able to take her in. I can donate some heartworm meds and some flea meds (at least enough for a month) but as of now, I'm still unemployeed so we're completely broke. I can't afford to get her all the vet care she'll need. Is there anyone who might be able to help in any way? This is an adorable little girl (she's probablly 30-35 lbs...nice lap size) and she's got a Jolly temperment :)
Please send me a personal msg or email if you can help or have any ideas. I want to act rather quick because if anyone else calls animal control on Jolly, she'll most likely be put to sleep since she's a pit mix. I'll see if I can get a pic of her today. Any advice or help is appreciated by me and my new friend Jolly.
Thanks,
Leslie

I wish you luck, Leslie! :(
What about her puppies, would you be able to catch them??

Have you sent Aly a PM? She might know someone who could foster Jolly. How old are the pups? Are they old enough to be away from mom, or do they follow when she goes on walks with you?
She sounds like a great dog in a bad spot. Are you sure your city has a "euthanize first, ask later" policy on Pitties? Does she look very obviously pit, or might you be able to say "She's a terrier mix, or she's a Lab mix," or whatever else is apparent in her genetic make-up?

Wow, good luck! That's a crazy situation. :( Even if I was in Texas still, I don't know that I'd be able to help. She sounds like a great dog, though....

Well I just took all 3 dogs for a walk again. Jolly went with us again. I hate that she's exposing my dogs to whatever she has, but I don't want to break her trust in my by running her off, so I just hope that whatever i'm giving my dogs as a preventative, will be enough to keep them safe from her bugs.
She and 2 of her puppies tried to follow me on my walk today. Last thing I need is 3 loose dogs following my two dogs, so I asked the owners to hold back the pups...they happened to be on the front porch. They don't care that Jolly follows me...they are fools to be so slack with thier dogs and cats.
Jolly's pups are about 7 weeks old. They're old enough to go from mom, and I could catch them, but they rarely leave the front yard. Today two ran across the street (non busy side street thank goodness) to follow Jolly, who was coming over to visit.
I really think she may be pure pit bull. Her size isn't very big, but I can't see any other breed in her. I have asked my fiance's mom, who does a bunch of rescue for northern TX and southern OK and she said the humane society and animal shelters here will euthanize. They have breed bans here, and if you own a pit bull, you need to keep it on a leash at all times, and provide proof of rabies if animal control ever wishes to drop a surprise visit...and I have heard that they'll take your pit or pit mix and impound it if you don't have the rabies certificate...they only give you a short time to get the certificate or else they euthanize the dog.
Jolly is a good dog in hell-hole of a house. The owners are always yelling at each other and she gets really scared when they start yelling...that's the first time I remember her coming over for a visit...when her owners were screaming at each other. It makes me crazy mad that anyone can be so irresponsible with their pets. Not only are they not taking care of Jolly, but it's likely that she's spreading giardia or whatever parasites she may have into the neighborhood. I've seen one of their cats pooping loose stools in my front yard, and Jolly's also pooped in my front yard...the cats are always going into my backyard and drinking out of Graham and Kersey's water dishes. If the cats have giardia and poop in my backyard, Kersey eats cat poop....so I'll have to get my dogs dewormed because of those morons.
It steams me up. I'll send a PM to Aly. Thanks for any suggestions. I really want to get Jolly out of that horrible place, I really wish it wouldn't result in her spreading diseases to my pets and/or the neighbors destroying my property, slashing our car tires, poisoning my dogs...all these things that an angry, horrible person might think to do if they were wanting revenge. I have to really be careful with how this is handled because of their history.

It's possible "Jolly" is pruducing pups FOR SALE - and if YOU
interfere with the "income stream" - you might be in for a "ruff time"!
Before you worry about the DOGS - you might try to "eliminate"
the REAL Problem - the 2-Leggers!
If you're *sure* about the
* no electricity
* no water
* no front door  ...
You ought to have a talk with >>>
1) the local Health Dept
2) the local Building Inspection Dept
3) Children's Services (if the have any Kids)
Around here - those conditions would earn you a "Condemned" sign
on the building and NO one could occupy it.

I'd have a chat with the Dog Warden or Animal Control ...
Tell them what you know -
and ask if they'll play "Let's Make a Deal" with you:
* Let THEM go get the dogs (for no Rabies & no Licenses)
* Let THEM tell the owners what they have to do to get them back
* and when the "owners" don't pay up and get the required shots
* be sure Animal Control will Call YOU to bail them out (Legally)
You'll need to be sure you can afford the "fines" and/or "adoption fees"
that the Animal Control will probably have to charge you -
but who knows - they might mis-count the pups.
Can Fiance's MOM help by finding a Rescue that will take them in?
No matter what - I would NOT bring "Jolly" and/or her Pups back
to YOUR House - the "neighbors" prolly won't take that very well!
Good Luck -

Yes I won't take Jolly into my home because of the diseases she may have. I won't risk getting my dogs and cats exposed. She really needs a place where she can get healthy away from other pets. That's where my main problem is...I could find several of Ricky's family members who could take in a dog in need, but not one with possible parasites.
I don't know, maybe I should just let sleeping dogs lay. I know she needs a new home, but maybe I should just keep out of the rehoming of her to avoid the stress and financial burden that it'll cause. It's hard to ignore it though, I get more and more attached to Jolly the more she comes to visit. I almost wish she was timid and didn't want to visit me, so I wouldn't feel like I needed to get involved.

Gosh, I think this would almost take someone with a heart of
stone to just abandon this sweet dog to her fate with these
idiots. And what about her pups? While I don't think you need
to necessarily take her into your house, it would be terrific if you
could round up some other people to help spirit her out of there.
I does sound like she would need to be fostered before being
rehomed. If you were able to get help from some other people,
it could work. I wouldn't try to do all this yourself. I'm sorry you
have to live were you must see, first hand, her hellish living
conditions.:( I do wish you the very best of luck getting her out
of that situation.

Leslie, is there any news on Jolly and her pups?
AdoreMyDogs
07-11-2005, 10:18 PM
No. The owners are complete idiots though. I heard this noise outside and I opened my door to see what it was and one of her puppies is dragging this enormous cowbell that's tied around its neck. Honestly the people have no clue. What on earth made them think they need to strap a cowbell that's big and heavy enough for a COW around that tiny puppies neck, is beyond me. The pups are maybe 7-8 pounds, they're rather small, and this cowbell drags on the ground it's so big. Messing with them may really hurt us...they are very bad news people. They've broken into houses in the neighborhood, they've been arrested for cooking meth, the guy next door to me just had his dog stolen a couple days ago, the idiots who own Jolly could really make our life hell. I just don't know what to do. I've not heard from Aly, I've started trying to find other places taht might take her in. I just want to get Jolly out of there, at least her, her puppies woudl be a bonus, but I have a soft spot for Jolly. I'll let you know if anything happens, but thus far it's not looking good :(
Hi Leslie,
I just read your PM's. I am SO sorry that I didn't respond sooner. I've been staying with my parents and only checked PT from their computer a few times (and PM notification didn't pop up).
There is a Pit rescue here in Austin that I could probably get Jolly and puppies into. I'd be willing to take care of Jolly's medical expenses since I get a major discount at work.
I want you to be safe though. I don't know what those people will do if all of their dogs disappear? At the same time, those dogs really need to be out of there. What a difficult situation :(
I'm totally willing to help though. I can't call now since it is so late, but I will PM you with my cell number too. Or you can always email me

The one here in Austin probably wouldn't because I think it is 5-6 hours away. If I could somehow get permission from them to go get them from AC though, I'd drive up there.

Will A/C euthanize her immediately? Or will there be a chance at all for adoption?
I will try to help you and Aly in ANY way I can (transport, medical expenses, whatever I can do), but I just don't have any contacts for anything other than small dog rescue and those are a bit strained lately (got sick of them not caring :( ). Most rescues here are bursting at the seams with pits and pit mixes as it is.
If you take Jolly, I'd be more than happy to help get her to Aly if she has a place for her. I'm in Dallas, BTW.
Micki, that'd work out well because I think Dallas is about the halfway point between me and Leslie. Thanks so much for offering help. With 3 of us working on this, we have to come up with something. I'm waiting to hear from the Pit rescue to see if they can take her and/or the puppies. I'm also going to PM someone from this forum who does some Pit rescuing in Houston.

Thank you Micki and Aly so much. To make any progress getting my dear little buddy Jolly any help is a weight off my chest. The owners WILL be mad that their dog is going to come up missing, but I want to get my in-laws or someone to pick her up when I take her for a walk so they never suspect me. If they ask me if I've seen her, I'll tell them she followed me on a walk and then started following some other guy, or she chased a cat into someones yard and she didn't want to come with me home.
I've intentionally created a good rapport with them because I want to take Jolly out of there, and I don't want them to suspect me in any way. I've been really careful to say hi to them, to wave to them, to smile at them when I see them. They've been very civil towards Ricky and I, but they are still bad news, regardless. If I didn't have Kersey, I'd be freaking out and probablly wouldn't get involved in any way. Kersey is SO protective, when people walk by our yard, she barks and charges the fence, she'd likely maul someone who entered my yard/house uninvited, so I am not worrying myself sick over this. I just want everything to work out as planned.
Thanks so much for your help. Jolly is truly a special little girl. She's got the best temperment, considering she lives in such a hell-hole of a house. She's always happy, except when her owners are fighting, then she gets scared. Aly feel free to call my cell up to 1AM, and as early as 8AM. Once I start work (I start on the 18th) it won't be as easy to plan any rescue efforts but maybe we can get this done before then if we're lucky.
And I believe AC will euthanize immediately. They don't adopt out pit or pit mixes. That's the impression I got when I inquired about it. If AC picks her up, the only one who can get her out is her current owners, since she's most likely pure pit, she won't be adopted out. If they can't produce her health records, they'll euthanize.
Thanks again. I hope this works, Jolly's put her paw print on my heart.

Leslie I just read this whole thread and once again am so impressed with the compassion and desire of PTers to help out in such an urgent situation. I do hope that you can all *pull this off* with safety and total anonymity. It would be wonderful if the puppies could be rescued as well, but I think at least if Jolly gets out of that horrible situation we have reason to be grateful. You haven't been in Texas very long, but already you are on a mission. Bless you Leslie, and Aly and Micki for all that you are trying to do!

AdoreMyDogs,
Do I have permission to cross post this on another forum? I'm also a member of a Pit Bull forum that I can post this on and get it some attention there. Can you get pics?
This Pit rescue I tried is VERY full, but they are going to try to get the word out and find a foster home anyway. Pit Chick also gave me another resource that I can try.
If all else fails, I'm going to ask if I can board her at work for a bit while we get her healthy and find a foster home. She just needs to get out of that horrible situation :(

The woman who owns the hell-hole of a house is moving out this weekend. The city is taking her house due to back taxes...she owes several thousand to the city, so they're taking the house. She is taking the father of Jolly's pups with her (his name is Jack) and she's taking one of her pups and she may or may not take one of her many cats. She said she's trying to find a home for Jolly (her name is actually Shianne, but her name is Jolly to me)
I told her I wanted Jolly. I showed her the excellent condition my dogs are in, told her that I'd get Jolly all the vet care she'd ever need, heartworm test and preventative, vacs and she'd be spayed. I told her how fond of Jolly I've become and that she'd have an excellent home. I told her that I take my dogs to the park daily, and I showed her how huge my back yard is, and she's seen me walking my dogs, so she knows how well taken care of they are.
I really can't take Jolly, but I want to get her out of that mess of a house. I found out that Jolly was hit by a car last week, but she wasn't hurt, thank goodness!
Aly and Micki...are you two able to snap into rescue/foster mode very soon if she ends up giving me Jolly? Let me know ASAP if possible please. I really don't want my puppers getting anything contagious and I don't have the money to take her to the vets right yet. I start work on Monday and once I start getting paychecks I'll be OK, but for now we're really struggeling with just Ricky's paychecks.
I hope this all works out! I love that little Jolly!
Oh, and I found out she's pit/boxer/shar pei mix, but she looks mostly pit to me. She's got the bouncy-ness and friendlyness of a boxer though. She's all tan. I'll have to get batteries for my dig camera today so I can snap some shots of her.

It doesn't sound like this woman can really afford another mouth to feed under the circumstances. I am hoping she realizes that and will let you have Jolly. I think KayAnn is probably right. If Graham and Kersey are UTD on shots, etc. they should be safe until you find a new home for Jolly. Hope to see pics soon. :)

Leslie, is there anymore updates on this sweet angel?
I wish I could afford to send you some money to help out but unfortunately at the moment I can't. :(
Hey Leslie,
I'm still trying like crazy to come up with an option for her. I was SO close to asking the vet who owns the clinic where I work if I could board her for a little bit while I take care of her health and find her a home. The very day I was going to ask him, another doctor brought 3 older puppies to the clinic to be put up for adoption. The puppies started driving him crazy and I knew he would've said no had I asked him right then. It still could be an option though. I'm desperately trying to find these pups at work a home so that there can be space open at the clinic again.
I would foster Jolly myself, but I don't even have a home right now. I'm staying with my boyfriend for a little bit and I've already overwhelmed him with my current animals and fosters :( Jolly is constantly on my mind though and I'm contacting every person I know who might be able to foster or give me other contacts.
Her puppies are in my prayers, as well as all the other unfortunate animals that belong to your neighbors :(

I think it would also be safe enough to bring Jolly home if all of your dogs are current on their vaccinations. Like Kfamr pointed out, they've already been "exposed" to Jolly and anything she may have just going on walks with you. We bring in strays all the time and have no idea what they do or don't have. While we don't immediately let them have direct contact with the other dogs, they are still in the same house and we haven't had any problems.

She's giving me Jolly!!! Ok, I can hold on to her for a day or two, but I can't keep her long. I really can't keep her in my house while I'm at work, and I don't have any sturdy crates. I'll keep her in my backyard while I'm at work if need be.
Micki and Aly, any news yet? Can we plan on this weekend on the transfer? Is it a good time? I'm not sure when they're giving me Jolly, but she said she'll give me her. She also has one pup who may not have a home. I told her I'd rehome it if she wanted...I told her I work with a few rescue groups, so she may have a pup come with her, but right now I'm focusing on Jolly. She's a good girl and she deserves a better life.
Micki and Aly, I started work today, my schedule for this and next week is 10am-7PM, so we'd have to work out a weekend transport.
I'm so greatful that I can get Jolly into the home she deserves. She's such a sweet little girl.
Give my cell a call if you want, Aly or Micki, and tell me when we can plan the transfer if I'm not around PT. :) Thank you both so much, I hope you are still able to help out, please let me know if you aren't. I dont' have the finances for 3 dogs now, and when we do have the finances, we're getting a puppy together, so I really can't keep little Jolly.

P.S., I will donate 1 month of heartworm med if needed and I'll put frontline on her when I get her, so any fleas she has will be killed by the time she is ready to travel. I also got a donated 40 pound bag of dog food for her. So she'll have enough food for at least a couple weeks

I've been trying to contact both Micki and Aly through AIM the past few days but I haven't gotten any reply. I hope they are just busy at the moment and can't get back to me.
{{HUGS}} Leslie.. I hope everything works out for you and Jolly.

I'm going to start looking for options to help Jolly. If anyone here is able to help in any way please let me know. I am not sure if they will give me Jolly anymore, since it's been awhile since they told me I could have her. I think her owner may have wanted me to take her soon, so I'm not sure if I can still have her. I just wanted to make one more plea for help from PT folks. I'm trying to get threw to some rescue organizations near me but thus far I can't find anyone that has room for a foster dog.
I think Aly and Micki must be really busy, or maybe they aren't able to do anything at this time, I am not going to ask again on this forum for help for Jolly. I am beating this situation to death and I don't want to be pestering you all.
This is my last plea for help. If you have any suggestions at all, please post them. If you might be able to help, please speak up. If you can find another forum to cross-post this request for help, please do so.
Thanks

Hi Leslie,
Sorry, I've been super busy. I can only take Jolly if it's for the short term and she already has a place to go to. I would have to keep her outside and it's HOT here, and I have no shade in the fenced off area that she would be kept in. Unfortunately I have no contacts here that could foster her. The couple of people that I do still talk to are either full or can't take pits or pit mixes (yeah, I know). If she has a foster home or a permanant home lined up, I can "hold" her for a few days. I know it isn't much help, and for that I'm truly sorry. :(

I do believe Jolly is gone. I tried my best to find her a foster home and get her out of there, but my best wasn't good enough. She's been gone for a week now. I don't know what they did with her, but she's gone. :(
My heart was in the right place, but it's not as easy to find a foster home as I thought it would be.
