View Full Version : Hollywood movie slump.

I have been watching the Business/Entertainment pages and they are bemoaning the fact that the Box Office (hence to known as BO, because most of the crap outta Hollyweird these days does stink.....) Numbers are way down for a zillion weeks in a row.
There are THOUSANDS OF BOOKS out there that scream to be made into movies......with the Computer Generated Imaging and
other Special Effects that can be done there is no shortage to the material out there...
Instead??
We get Bewitched, Charlie's Angels and the Honeymooners...
Fricking drivel that craps out in a week.....
I really loved the story that Drew Barrymore refused to use a gun in C.A.'s but agreed to use some of the stupidest SFX in the fight scenes...I took in about 5 minutes if the start of that disaster and turned the channel.....
--------------------------
Some hints for Hollywood.
Spend less on 'Blockbusters'-Just because you sign a big name don't mean they are gonna save the movie. THere are better actors that will work for less...
Go back to the serials....
I for one, would go back to a move house to see a movie and a 'short' ....A serial, big screen 30-40 minute long movie episode
Premiere a new one every 2 months........Again, there are tons of material and actors out there.
I LOVED '24' on television.......It kept me interested and I had to come back every week.....
Lower the prices.....I do like Matinees...but 10 dollars for a bucket of popcorn???? I pay about 70 cents for a bag when I rent the DVD. Do a few dollar days....two for one admission.......
Get rid of the "predictable actor reactions"
The Julia Roberts scream, the Keanu Reeves "Whoa!". the actors complain about being typecast....then agree to do the same thing over and over....
Encourage actors to do an role they wouldn't do otherwise....
I hate Robin Williams....But I loved him in One Hour Photo....He was the sick bees turd that I knew he could play....
Don't rely so much on special effects....
If I see a make believe tank in a war movie.....It make me look for other make believe crap.......If it's a Gollum or a bunch or Orcs running around whacking the crap outta each other, I can handle that...it's supposed to be fake....
I used to love to go to the movies....but I have since dropped to a few times a year, to once a year, to "I don't remember the last movie I went to......"
If they want to win me back, they are gonna have to try very hard.
Thoughts???

Richard, I never knew Robin could be creepy until I saw One Hour Photo. That's one of my favorite movies now. They've also remade the Bad News Bears  I wish they would come out with a few good movies months from each other instead of spewing out new crap every week. They have no imagination any more, it seems.

I agree, there's really not a lot that gets me wanting to pay the outrageous amount of money that it costs to go to the movies these days! I want to see a good movie with a good plot...not this sleazy drivel that's pounded out on the screens (both in movies and in TV) these days. *sigh*
It costs $18 for 2 people to go to the movies where I live (and that's not counting the $10 popcorn! LOL). At that rate, I feel more compelled to just wait and buy the damn DVD for the same price!
Remember when movies were $1.50??!!! Seems like so long ago...

Here's another hollywood hint:
Stop making movies that look like they were written and directed by pre-pubecent 13 year olds. Gah, the writing on movies has gotten so friggen terible it almost makes me wanna hurl.
and please, if you're going to make a movie about a book, TRY to make it follow the book at least a little...(Recient example: Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy was utter and total C**p. It was like they weren't even TRYING!)
Hollywood officially sucks, I'm going to go read a book ;)

RICHARD,
Boy did you hit the nail right on the head!
I have NO desire to see any remakes. They are dumb, and you already know what the outcome is, so why bother??? What's next, the Brady Bunch???
I saw Robin Williams in One Hour Photo and thought it was THE dumbest movie I had ever seen!!
And to think all these actors get paid BIG bucks for this crap!! It amazes me.
As far as the movie "snacks" are concerned, I learned a long time ago from my best friend, who knows how to squeeze a nickle till the buffalo poops, to take in your own snacks. The theaters poo-poo the idea, but they're not about to search you. I usually take in a can of soda or juice and get chips and candy from the local store, which is ALOT cheaper!
Popcorn?? What can I say? There is nothing like theater popcorn with GOBS of butter (I can hear my arteries hardening everytime I squirt on the butter). The great thing about theaters in Michigan (not sure of anywhere else) is they give you free refills and let you put on your own butter! :p I refill up before I go home too! YUMMY!!
Until these overpaid actors can put on a movie worth paying the money for, I'll wait till the DVD comes out! At least if it does suck, I've only wasted $4 instead of half a paycheck!!

Don't forget the half hour of your life that you'll never get back sitting through the pre-movie commercials and previews.
I try to hit the matinees to save money. Then we usually share the popcorn and the pop so we feel a little less hosed.

LOL,
I usually hit my finger with the hammer....
I think Robin Williams is an aquired taste......After seeing Mork from Ork doing all the interviews I tired of him...
Another actress I COMPLETELY HATED was....ack, I can't of her name....
OH OH!! Juliette Lewis......I wanted to kick her arse in Cape Fear....she was great in that movie!! I was yelling thru the whole movie.....STUPID, DON'T do it....I forgot it was a movie!!!
If you have heard the New Batman is an actor by the name of Chris Bale????
He make a really dark, nasty movie called American Psycho....
I loved that flick too!!!!
Sometimes a trip thru the 9.98/4.98 bargain bin at Walmart or Target is good way to grab a few flicks for the weekend!!

American Psycho. Now that's some messed up %$@#! I didn't realise he was the new Batman. I love all those creepy movies. He was scary in that movie. One movie I hated was Natural Born Killers. Juliette Lewis was in that one, too.

I was just thinking last night how there aren't many movies out that I'm pumped to see. The last movie I was excited about, and, paid off...was Garden State. That's going to be a favorite for a long time. The Oscar nominated movies (for best picture anyway) were good, I thought. The only one I didn't see was the Aviator. I will, though. Sideways, Ray, and, Million Dollar Baby were all good, in my opinion. Sideways was so original! Very cool. But, yeah, the only movie I really want to see out now is Batman Begins. I do want to see Madagascar, too, but, I want to wait to take my niece, if she hasn't seen it, yet. I don't care for remakes, usually, but, I'm so excited about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I'm always excited about a new Tim Burton film, and, Johnny Depp takes the excitement up another notch. ;) But, right now, nothing really catches my eye. Oh, and, I've heard good things about Cinderella Man.....
I do think Hollywood needs to step it up a notch. And, yeah, knock concession prices down. I always take a big bag with my own drinks and food, though. ;) And, I usually pass as a student.

Yeah, Christian Bale is in a newer movie called The Machinist, I've heard it's gritty and pretty nerve wracking but, I haven't seen it yet. I loved Natural Born Killers, but, it screwed with my head for a couple of nights. I think she's a great actress, I always forget I'm watching her, and, feel like I'm watching whatever character she's playing.

You are so right! I hate that everything has to be an outlandish overuse of the F-word and other uneccessary curses, and mostly the ubiquitous nipples, cleavage, nipples, belly, nipple, butt, nipples... did I mention nipples? OMG, in real life I never see this many running around town! Are sets really cold or something?? It makes me uncomfortable to even watch a moive... all that gratuitous boobage.
Then we have the starlets who would be knocked over in a strong wind because they are so skinny. Show me a real woman. One with real boobs (like the tie in from rant #1? ;) ) We are a mixed world now... not everyone is 5'9, 98 pounds with 36D boobs. Lets show a better representation of the beautiful variety humanity has to offer!
And when they make a kids movie, half the time the jokes and such are soooo not appropriate. Like in Shrek 2 when the gingerbread man was wearing a thong... OMG... I was appalled. And I see this Charlie and the Chocolate factory... it looks like Willy Wonka meets Goth. It looks scary and dark and sooo is going to kill what was already a classic and perfect movie. Yes, he DOES look like the dude from CLockwork Orange. I couldn't for the life of me figure out WHY I've been thinking of that movie all week. As soon as Richard mentioned it, things clicked! :D

The original movie is a great movie, no doubt. I don't think releasing a different interpretation is going to kill the charm of the original, though. Those that feel that way, probably aren't going to see the new one, anyway....I wouldn't if I thought it would ruin the version with Gene Wilder. But, from what I've heard, the newer one is supposed to be closer to the book, but, maybe I heard that wrong. It's definitely going to have a dark, weird edge to it, though, because that's what Tim Burton is known for. :) There's no way I'm comparing it to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, though. I'm going into it on July 17th with a clean slate. ;) Should be an interesting journey.

I agree with almost everything you said! I HATED Tomb Raider. My husband and I took his little brother because he loves Tomb Raider games. Angeline Jolie's nipples were showing through the WHOLE movie - except for the part where they are in the Artic and it's supposed to be cold!
As for the women being too thin, ain't that the truth! I write for young adults so I watch shows from Disney and Nickolodeon to keep up with what teens and preteens are doing. I love the show 'That's So Raven' and I was looking it up on the Internet Movie Data Base and on their message board, everyone was calling Raven fat. I wanted to say, 'Um, no. She's not fat; she's got curves. You've forgotten what real women look like.' There can't be many worse role models for our girls than these young actresses that lose fifty pounds and get boob jobs as soon as they turn eighteen.
I totally agree with you about the kids' movie thing. We went to see Shrek 2 and I was shocked at that scene with the underwear! On the way home, me and Mike normally discuss the movie we just watched (we see one a week as our 'date' night) and when I said that wasn't appropriate, he said something about 'Would you want to sit through a two hour movie without any adult jokes?' The truth is, I wouldn't, but then, I don't want children. If I were to ever have a child, I hope to goodness that I could sit through a two-hour movie with her and not feel the need to hear adult language or off-color jokes. Later, we went to see Garfield and I don't remember anything bad in it but maybe I was still blinded by the Shrek experience.

Catland,
I only go to matinees too. This way if the movie sucks, I've only wasted $5.75.
Lady_Zana,
I loved the Shrek movies!! Eddie Murphy was a hoot! Garfield was okay, but nothing I'd pay to see again if I had known.
As far as the world's idea of a real woman, most of the actresses I've seen are anorexic! I'm a full-figured gal and damn proud of it!!!

As for women being too skinny in films....I agree for the most part. It's nasty. I rarely find supermodels attractive, because they're all so thin, but, they have big boobs, which makes them look even skinnier. I don't mind thin women, as long as it looks like they're meant to be that way. Ya know, like a girl who's just naturally thin. Like Natalie Portman is just a tiny woman, she looks natural, though. She's small chested and just petite. But, take Lindsey Lohan and Christina Ricci....these girls have curves naturally, and larger chests. Then they go and lose too much weight and they look like spoons...with these scrawny bodies and huge heads, because they're not supposed to be that thin. And, they have these big boobs.....Or Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston when they have gone back and forth with being too thin. I've always thought Kate Winslet was beautiful, and, she's a curvy girl. But, again, I think Natalie Portman and Gwyneth Paltrow are beautiful, too....but, they are very thin. I don't think they look skinny.....skinny is when you can see their bones and stuff. It's a negative term, and, I don't think some women are skinny, just petite or whatever. Anyway, I'm rambling...being a flibbertigibbet. ;)

Lately the only two constants are boobs and explosions...
Pretty soon, for lack of any better ideas, there will be a movie out about exploding boobs
I agree with you Catnapper, when I go see a movie I'm not really interested in scrawny women with big chests. But, I guess thats what sells...

In the last 13 months, I've seen 3 movies. I wasn't impressed with any of them - including Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (and I loooooooove Harry Potter).
I'm tired of "special" effects. HEY HOLLYWOOD, IF YOU USE THEM IN EVERY SCENE IN EVERY MOVIE, THEY'RE NOT SPECIAL ANYMORE!!! Hear that, George Lucas? How is it that your original Star Wars trilogy was a run-away smash hit with Yoda as a muppet instead of CGI and the planet Tattooine was shot ON LOCATION IN A DESERT instead of in front of a blue screen? Yes, I know there were some special effects in those movies, but it wasn't the entire thing. Oh, and what's up with the STOOOOOOOOPID names you gave characters in the prequels. General Grievous? Why not just name the next villian in your next movie "Mr. Bad" or something?
I loooooooooove me some Johnny Depp but I doubt I'll see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 'til DVD. To my knowledge, there's really nothing coming out in the next six months that has piqued my interest. Sad.

But you see, the boob-guns weren't the main plot of Austin Powers (although it was admittedly really funny to see). I'm talking about a movie where the movie is just about exploding boobs. Maybe it would go like this: aliens somehow find all these big chested hollywood women and implant a device in each of them (perhaps the ailens could pose as plastic surgons that happen to be running a special on breast implants and reductions...)and when the aliens pushed a button on thier ship all the fake boobs exploded!
Call it "Boob Ransom" or some such...

I'll tell you where all those people in San Jose were who didn't go to the movies last week. They were crammed into a block of San Pedro Street, watching a movie filmed in black-and-white with no computer-generated effects. No SFX of any kind, really, except what Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann and that EXCELLENT cast could cook up on their own. Yes, we were all watching Psycho. Good movie!

Breast Men
This docudrama recaps the history of silicone breast implants, beginning in 1962 when idealistic Houston medical resident Kevin Saunders (David Schwimmer) gets an idea after seeing how women pad their bras. After he shares his notion with cosmetic pro Dr. William Larson (Chris Cooper), the two create a prosthetic breast from Dow-Corning's silicone gel. Approaching women on the street fails to bring volunteers, but a classified newspaper ad does the trick. As breast sizes increase, so do the doctors' bank accounts. However, physical problems emerge, followed by lawsuits, and the high life soon turns sour and grim. Filmed in LA, and Texas (Galveston, Houston), this TV movie premiered December 13, 1997 on HBO.

"Have you seen "The Grudge"? As far as I can remember, there were no "bad" words and there was absolutely no nudity in the movie. It was still spooky and because it lacked all the usual crap of most of the movies that come out these days, it was great! :)
oh I agree, lol my friends and I used to go to movies on a regular basis, I have not been the the movies in 2005. I mean really and remake of the bad news bears? I LIKE the orginal, why the in world would I want to see a remake, if I wanted to watch it I would turn on my TV and watch the original, it comes on often enough, from waht I have heard charlie and the chocolate factory is not a remake but a differt take on the book, apperntly its better then the first but its lacking in the best part.. the oompa loompas lol, still though I want to see new movies I rarely like remakes, because when I think of a character I think of the orginal and when the new one looks totally differnts it annoys me to the point that I cant even watch it.
