View Full Version : Kidney Disase

SANDY FROST

Our 7 year old Bengal cat has kidney disase. Don't know how he got it but is at hospital with iv in leg and doing better. He lost over 4 pounds gradually and all of a sudden he got dehydrated and was not himself. He is still young and has a good chance of a better recovery than older cats of which this more common. Cross your fingers and say a prayer for Yuri.

Yuri please get better. Do what the docs say - eat your kidney diet, drink you water, take the meds your meowmie gives you.

I feel for you Sandy. My Mishi is only 4 and he, too, has bad kidneys. Last month I thought we were going to lose him, but he pulled through - after passing several kidney stones. I gave him Sub-Q fluids at home for a few days and now he's back to his old silly self, although he's still on antibiotics for another two months. He's also put back some of the weight he lost; they lose it SO quickly! Hang in there. There are many of us here on PT with Kidney cats. Gentle scritches and head bumpies to Yuri.

You know that the CRF (as in Chronic Renal Failure) is quite common in cats. If you notice it - when they loose wight and dehydrate- a lot of kidney function is usually gone (more than 60% they say)- but cats are so good in hiding the symptoms that it can really take time until you notice.

A way to find out earlier is a blood test that checks the urea and creatinine level. This is how we found out that my Aby boy Filou has it too- but in a much earlier stage than Yuri.

When he comes home you should be prepared that he will need subcutanean fluids more often- maybe even several times a week. Many Pet Talkers can give their furkids the subQ injections at home but with my wiggly butt Filou I am not sure whether I can get him to keep still. This may be a problem with a youngish Bengal too.

Next thing is a diet for him. It is low proteine and low phosphor and kitties don't love it THAT much but it helps keep the urea and crea level down.

Here is a link with lots of information:

http://www.felinecrf.com/what0.htm

All best wishes to Yuri- CRF cannot be healed but it can be under control for a longer time.

I hope so much Yuri's disease can be managed without a transplant.

I am more or less sure that I would not put Filou through something like that. On one hand I know no cat would voluntarily donate his kidneys for another cat, on the other hand it would mean immunesupressive meds for the rest of the life.

I hope the sub Q fluids help for quite some time.:)

What a beautiful boy! Glad to hear that he is doing so much better. I see he is sporting a shaved arm from the IV. Don't worry Yuri the fur will grow back. When Gidget had her catheter in her arm and had to have it shaved she walked around for a week showing it to me, but the fur did grow back. So, if Yuri seems bothered by it, it is just because it looks and feels different.

Sandy, my cat Cosmo had a senior blood test done yesterday. The vet called today and said his glucose level is low and that he has to go on a kidney diet. He mentioned the food K/D. It's a food that you buy at the vets. I'll be picking it up tomorrow.

What food do you feed your cat? I'm just curious.

He told me to watch if Cosmo drinks excessively and pees more than usual. Cosmo is 9 years old. I don't want to lose my baby.

I posted a thread about my OTHER cat, Maxie. It's called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Both my cats had something wrong with them during this vet visit. It was a sad vet visit yesterday.

If you can tell me what food your cat is eating, I would be most appreciative.

Thank you and I hope your kitty is doing well.

Hi I am new here and just finished reading about Yuri. My cat Ming also has kidney problems that I have just found out about a month ago. He is doing better now than then but does not eat well and I am worried. He is also on Royal Canin Renal food..he has good days with it and bad. So I have started him on Nutri-Cal and this is where I need some real help!! He HATES it...my husband and I have tried everything to get it into him but it just ends up everywhere. Also how often should he be seeing a vet? I just took him to a new vet when we found this out and she never said when to bring him back? Thanks for all your help on this! I hope Ming does as well as Yuri seems to be.

Ladybeloved, my Filou also has kidney problems. He loves the Royal Canin but there are other diet foods. Many here use Science diet K/D.

THere are lots of infos on this website:

http://www.felinecrf.com/what0.htm

Depending on how advanced Ming's kidney failure is, subcutaneous fluids are recommended.

When the treatment starts I think I would have checked the urea and creatinine level every 4 weeks. With the diet and the fluids they can even be better than now.

All the best for Ming. Filou sends headbumpies.

My KatMa, Paw-Paw and I are focusing on you. We want you to have a speedy recovery and a very long life.

We are happy to read Yuri is home now. Re kidneys & cats, did you know that one treatment for cats with renal problems is administration of fluids under the skin by the cat's owner (subcutaneous fluid therapy). Sasha's veterinarian showed me how to do this with our beloved Tiggy [b. 17 August 1985 - d. 05 September 2000]. He needed lots of fluids late in his life and I learned how to do this. It helped him so much.

Hope Ming is feeling better; wishing all the best for Ming and Yuri.

Here is a picture of Yuri's brother Tigger. I'm sorry for your loss of your cat Tiggy.

So pleased to hear Yuri is improving and eating so well, that's terrific news. Hugs from me and my two girls - Cleo goes for her bloods and dentistry next month. Last time she was in the upper end of the normal range so we'll see. Colette had her dentistry earlier this week, her bloods were fine, though she's only 61/2 so we would hope so. Cleo is 16 so ... we hope for the best. Good luck Yuri, continue to stay well and improving:) :)

Thanks so much for the hugs for Yuri. I 'll cross my fingers for your cats and hope they have a good check up and passed their test. As Yuri's vet said "Boy Yuri really studeyed for that last blood test." Hugs for Cleo &Colette.
