View Full Version : Gravely ill kitty....help!

My 11 yr old buddy, Sam, an 11 lb orange short hair domestic kitty, became suddenly ill around 7pm Fri. 06/17. He was fine all day, playing, eating, socializing, then at 7 I found him on his side on the floor with a frothy, bloody mouth having severe difficulty breathing. Apparently, between 630pm and 7pm he coughed up a hairball with a small piece of catnip in it and then vomited a clear fluid with red blood (about 3 - 4 tsp) in my upstairs bathroom. He then made his way downstairs to where I found him near the foot of the stairs. When I picked him up and rushed him to my car, he "screamed" for lack of better description, and vomited more blood and clear fluid. He urinated on my lap during the 4 minute ride to the vet, still desparately trying to breathe. At the vet's he "screamed" and vomited blood yet again.

They gave him oxygen, which helped him, did a chest xray, and tapped the lungs. No fluid from either lung, but the xray showed his stomach full of air and his lungs badly clouded. He spent 4 hours in an oxygen tent (fishtank), and he improved his breathing, although it was still difficult for him. An IV was started as well as antibiotics (IV at first, then oral).

I saw him twice Saturday, about 4 hours apart, and saw a dramatic improvement at each visit. Sunday was even better as he was no longer having problems breathing and got up, walked over to me for loving, and purred the whole time. He did not eat, but showed interest in food by sniffing it and licking it.

Xrays today (Monday) showed that part of the lungs cleared up, but the rest did not and even showed a larger amount of what seems to be fluid in the plueral cavity. However, tapping the chest still doesn't get any fluid. Bloodwork is normal, temperature is normal, test for heartworm was sent off with the results expected in 24 hours, heart is not enlarged and no murmurs or defects are heard, although it is beating faster than it should. With activity, his color (roof of mouth, gums, tongue) turns blue, then pinks up right away.

When I saw him today he was laying in his cage, not moving. His breathing is not labored, but he looked very, very bloated, and had fluid seeping from where his chest had been tapped. He felt as if he had been given subcutaneous fluid all over his body. His IV was in ok, and he'd been given only a maintenance doseage since he's not eating or drinking. I picked him up to hold him and he perked up a little, grooming on my face and purring loudly. The vet gave him some Valium to try and encourage him to eat, and he showed interest in his food, but again just licked it.

He was force-fed rather than inserting a feeding tube at this time, and antibiotics were changed to a stronger type and amount, and given by IV. If no improvement tomorrow...?

Several vets have gotten involved and all are puzzled. Sam was a very healthy cat prior to this incident, and has never had coughing, trouble breathing, loss of appetite...nothing. He also has not had a repeat of the "screaming" and severe difficulty breathing since his initial arrival at the vet's. His vet suggested lung cancer as a possibility, but is unable to aspirate anything. Another suggestion is heart failure, but his heart sounds good and is not enlarged. It breaks my heart to see him sick and not know what to do to help him. I'm sure that he's not enjoying hanging around in a vet cage, either, and would much rather be home.

I apologize for the length of this post, but I'm hoping someone out there may have some suggestions for helping Sam. I realize I may need to make the hard decision to have him euthenized, and I certainly don't want him to suffer, but I want to know that I've done everything possible to help him before doing that. We're all at a loss here as to what is wrong, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Jennie Lu,

I am so sorry to hear about your beautiful, brave boy, Sam.

Do what you have to do. Albeit, push for more testing or make the ultimate decision. Just remember, Sam's best interest is the most important.

I will pray for you and Sam. PT prayers have come through time and again. Maybe they'll come through for Sam, once again!!

Whatever you decide, now that we are here for you!

Is he indoor only? Is there any chance that he ate something he shouldn't have? Did they test for common poisons? Poor guy, I hope they can figure this out!

Jennie Lu
06-20-2005, 09:17 PM
He's strictly indoor only. I worried at first that he got hold of a thread and needle from my daughter's room and had the needle caught in his throat...but no. I thought, too, about poisons, but nothing out in the house. They treated him for poisoning, allergic reaction, just about any possibility. They started this evening to give him Lasix for the subq fluid buildup.

It's truly a mystery and a worry. A disappointment today, too, after seeing him improve Sat & Sun. I miss the little love...he's such a snuggler.

Jennie Lu

P.S. they treated him for electrical shock, too, even though he didn't have any burns and never chews cords...only string and ribbon so I've got to keep them packed away.

06-20-2005, 10:53 PM
Oh poor baby! I do hope that whatever it is, they find out what it is and can treat him. Prayers going out your way. I know what it's like to have a sick kitty (I thnk we all do)

06-21-2005, 12:33 AM
Poor Sam.:( I sure hope that the vet will be able to find out what's causing his problems and that it's treatable. Lots of prayers and positive thoughts are being sent your way.

Poor Sam! I hope he pulls through. At first I thought it sounded like poisoning but that seems to have been ruled out.

06-21-2005, 08:59 AM
Adding my best wishes and prayers for Sam's recovery, poor little love. Have no suggestions, sorry.:(

06-21-2005, 09:17 AM
Oh poor Sam, and you. :( I'm so sorry to hear this. I also thought it might be poison to begin with, but it seems it's not. I really, really hope the vets can find the cause and a treatment for him. We all want him well and happy again. He is such a wonderful boy!

We're sending gentle kisses, and keeping all paws and fingers crossed for him.

Get well, Sam!

I'm so sorry to hear about little Sam! I sure hope he's feeling better and you've got a good uppydate for us.

Come on Sam, you can beat this....whatever it is! The good news is that he is at the vet's where they can monitor him closely.

Good luck and we'll be sending positive thoughts and prayers your way!

Hope that Sam is doing better today. Please let us know his progress. Good thoughts being sent to you.

I just got back from a long snuggly visit with Sam at the kitty hospital. Poor thing is having a hard time breathing today and had a bad episode this morning. Doc gave him heparin as she was afraid he was going to throw a blood clot this morning, and a dose of steroids to help the breathing. It was still pretty labored this afternoon, but better. His color was a little blue and he didn't feel like doing anything but lay there, but his subq fluid buildup was pretty much gone. He didn't even purr while I was loving him today...at least not until Doc walked in! I think I'm being replaced! Still getting serious antibiotics, and still not eating. A feeding tube will be put in today. More xrays tomorrow.

Doc said she did some research last night and believes this is heartworm based upon all the indicators he's had so far. The blood sample they sent out was plasma and not what they needed for the test so a correct sample is being sent today. They have never sent off a heartworm test for cats before as it is treated symptomatically. Bad news is there is no cure for heartworm in cats, but good news is that the course of treatment he's receiving now is the correct one and there should be gradual improvement. Doc stated that episodes like Sam's on Friday happens when the heartworm dies (and they do die) or a bloodclot is thrown because of the heartworm. Treatment would continue until the heartworms are dead. I never thought about heartworm in cats, especially indoor only cats, but apparently at least 90% of heartworm in cats occurs in indoor cats (still transmitted by mosquitos). Once he's out of the woods he'll start on heartworm prevention meds to kill off the worms.

I feel a little better having an idea what we're up against. The results for heartworm will be back tomorrow. I hate to say I'm hopeful that they'll be positive, but at least that way we'd know definitely what's wrong and how to best treat. My heart goes out to my poor little guy, though, as he's so tired from trying to breathe.

Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes. Sam and I and all his buddies at home are grateful and are praying hard for him as well. We all have our whiskers crossed for him.

06-21-2005, 02:31 PM
I also hope they at least find what it is with Sammy - so that it can be treated. All the best for both of you:)

06-21-2005, 04:05 PM
Sammy continues to be in my prayers. It sounds like they are on the right track and that he will get better, albeit slowly. Gentle scritches and headbumpies coming your way from the M's.

06-21-2005, 08:03 PM
Oh Jennie, this must be so heartbreaking for you. I'm glad that the vet is at least on the right track. I will continue my prayers for sweet Sam.

Another visit to my baby Sammy to wish him good night, but I'm afraid it may have been a goodbye. If only he'd respond to his meds and rest comfortably through the night...the heartworm results will be in tomorrow and may offer better treatment suggestions.

The poor little guy suffered through an unsuccessful attempt to insert a feeding tube. He's got some blood coming from his nostrils from the trauma of the attempt and very sore there now. He barely opened his eyes for me, and just layed his head on my hand while I scratched him and closed his eyes. My baby is worn out from the fight. I don't expect him to make it through the night, and gave instructions not to intubate him, if he has problems and doesn't respond to oxygen through a mask and stops breathing, to let him go. I can't see putting him through more discomfort just to prolong his agony.

Please pray for my boy Sammy and me tonight.

06-21-2005, 10:02 PM
That is just horrible, what a terrible ordeal you and Sammy are having.

Tinkerbelle, Kewpie, Spike, Rocky and I will include Sammy and you in our prayers tonight.

06-21-2005, 11:26 PM
Jennie, I'm so sorry to hear that Sammy isn't doing well.:( Lots of prayers and positive thoughts are being sent your way. Please take care.

06-21-2005, 11:34 PM
:( :( :( My tears are flowing for you and your precious baby. If God chooses to call him to the RB, may his journey be a peaceful one, knowing that he is loved by a very caring Meowmie.

Jennie, he will not leave your side and will watch over you for all eternity until you meet again.

jennie, my heart gets heavy and heavier as I was reading more and more about your special dear sam.. :(

your sam has automically went into my thoughts and I hope to check back in with at least no heartworm, much less painful for him!

don't forget we're here and thinking of you for your sam,...prayers from across the ocean!

This is terribly, terribly sad, made difficult reading, must be even more difficult for you both to live through. I'm so sorry to hear this, and quite alarmed too. I had no idea indoor cats could get heartworm. We'll be very, very careful next summer, here. I hope your next post is better news and Sam's distress stops soon, one way or another, it's for the best. My thoughts are with you. TC3

06-22-2005, 01:59 PM
Just wondering how Sammy was doing today and if you got the results of the test yet. Let us know please.

I'm so sorry to hear about Sammy. :(

I hope the source of illness is discovered soon and that he recovers.

I'm so sorry to hear Sammy is not responding well. I sure hope we get a good uppydate today.

I know this doesn't help you and Sammy right now, but it might help someone else. Feline heartworm is becoming more and more prevalent. Everytime I go to the vet I see ads and pamphlets all over the place for Revolution which is really kind of a "cure all" type medicine. You put it on the scruff of their neck once a month and it prevents fleas, several parasites and also heartworms. And yes, heartworms are a problem even for inside only kitties. If you check out the Revolution website you'll find much more information than I've got here. So, hopefully this will not be all in vain for Sammy if even one kitty is saved because their meowmy heard about the threat of heartworm and the Revolution to cure it.

Come on Sammy, please get better. :(

Our thoughts are with you and Sammy.

There have been miracles here on PT and we send thoughts for one.

:( i am so heart broken for Sam. My babies all send prayers & good blessing. Hey mom maybe this picture will cheer you just a bit. Best of Luck & now I need to have a talk with my Vet on that heartworm issue & my babies. :)

Well, I finally got home to give an update on Sam. I expected all night for the phone to ring, but it never did. This morning at 9 I went to the vet's and asked about him and was led to his "suite" ( :D hooray! he made it through the night!). As I walked in he raised his head up, started purring, and looked at me through eyes that were much more alert! He'd just had his meds so was breathing hard from the stress of that, but still was doing better than last night. I was definitely in a happy shock. I left a can of tuna for him if his doc approved, hoping it would tempt him to eat. I wasn't able to talk to her, but she called me later on and let me know that last night the on call vet called her and let her know that he didn't think Sammy was going to make it through the night. I guess he surprised everyone because they all said he's doing so much better today. He didn't eat the tuna, but his nose is stuffy from yesterday's feeding tube attempt...maybe he can't smell and therefore can't taste either. His xrays are no better, no worse, but are different in the location of cloudiness/fluid. Still no fluid when tapping the chest. The heartworm test came back negative, so his illness is still a puzzle, but his doc is treating him now for congestive heart failure. She let me know that the subq fluids have left, and are usually the first to do so, so the lung fluid should be next (hopefully). She also said it is possible that he has a very aggressive lung infection which has caused the pulmonary vessels to compress against the heart (?) and that may explain the differences in the xrays from time to time. Sam did have a respiratory illness (sneezing, runny nose) in December or January that actually was brought home from the vet's by Huey (the oldest who was in for a UTI) and passed through the household. All got antibiotics and recovered from their symptoms, but maybe poor Sam didn't get all the bacteria out of his lungs. Needless to say, all my guys and gals are going to the vet pronto for serious exams and chest xrays.

So, bottom line is we still don't know what it is, but we've got to be getting closer by process of elimination. Doc has contacted a specialist at the University of Alabama for suggestions and ideas and we'll have another chest xray tomorrow to compare to today's. I'm on my way back in to see him now. Keep the prayers comin', 'cause they sure helped out last night! Thank you all so much...it helps me so much. I'll keep you posted.

06-22-2005, 05:36 PM
How good that he's at least seeming kind of better, not just "surviving" which seemed even too much to hope for! He'll still be in our prayers, thankfully God will know your Sam from Sam the baby girl we're all also praying for (!see here if you don't know what I'm talking about (http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78845) )

Whew! I'm so glad he made it through the night and seems to be doing better! Now I just hope and pray they can figure it out so they can start treating him correctly.

{{{hugs}}} going out to you and prayers for little Sammy!

06-22-2005, 07:41 PM
Jen, I'm so glad he made it through the night. What a little fighter!! But the thought of not knowing exactly what the problem is must be so frustrating. Please know that you and Sam continue to be in my daily prayers.

BTW, do you happen to have a picture to post of this precious furbaby?

Thank you for the uppydate. Sam and Peanut (and Mishi) are all in our prayers. Please, kitties, get and stay healthy for your meowmies!

We got fluid!! Using ultrasound doc got 100cc of fluid from Sam's chest cavity. There was an immediate improvement in his breathing, and about 1/2 hour after he began drinking water like it was going out of style and ate a little food!! (his first of either since Friday) I left the room for about 15 minutes, and when I went back in he looked up, STOOD UP, WALKED to me and meowed for me twice. Then he purred up a storm, made biscuits, and gave me head bumpies...one happy cat. Amazing considering that this attempt to get fluid was a last desparate act. He could barely breathe this evening and doc was determined to get the fluid off to make him more comfortable.

The bad news is that there were many, many atypical cells in the fluid probably indicating cancer. :( At least now, though, we have an answer and know what we're up against. Doc said the cells were what she would expect from cancer, but were very strange, more like melanoma cells. She also said there were cells engulfed inside of cells and that overall they just looked strange. They will be analyzed in the morning by the lab tech and sent off for diagnosis. Doc is looking through a photo comparison book to get a better idea tonight. Tomorrow looks like drain off as much fluid as possible, then ultrasound and xray to try and see if there is a tumor in front of the heart.

I'm still convinced that all your prayers and mine produced a mighty miracle in Sammy boy. It's just too amazing the difference between him being at death's door last night and him up and eating/drinking tonight. THANK YOU GOD!:) and thank you all.

P.S. I'm sure God is channeling even more of our prayers and energy to Sammy girl in Cincinnati. He's too good to get them confused :)

06-22-2005, 08:38 PM
How exciting! Hope they can figure it out, but I'm just so glad he was so much happier - purrs and headbumpies - that's a grateful kitty! Prayers continue.

Here's an attached photo of my Sammy as requested. He is the cuddliest lapcat in the house - just can't stand not to be the center of attention and scritches!

I missed the "hospital roommate" first time around...so true! :D

06-22-2005, 08:53 PM
That is SUCH good news! I hope your Sammy continues to improve. Cancer in kitties is a toughie, but it sounds like he's in very good hands and you're doing everything you can to help Sammy, although I'd hate to see the bills. He's lucky to have you as his meowmie. PT prayers continue.

Woo hoo!!! What great news that he's feeling so much better!

But what scary news about the abnormal cells. However, like you say, at least you know what you're up against now and can hopefully start treating it and he'll get better real soon.

{{{hugs}}} to you. I know you're relieved, and yet still worried.

06-22-2005, 11:40 PM
I'm so glad to hear that Sam is feeling and doing much better.:) Hopefully the abnormal cells aren't as bad as the vet thinks they are and can be treated. Lots of prayers and positive thoughts are still being sent your way. Please take care.

06-23-2005, 06:00 AM
I'm so glad Sammy pulled through and that you now know what's going on.

It will be tough -but it is a relief to know how he can be helped to feel better at least:)

06-23-2005, 08:04 AM
So glad he made it through the night and is showing signs of improvement. Eating and drinking is a great sign. I hope that they can determine exactly what is causing his problems and hopefully it isn't cancer. Prayers continue!

06-23-2005, 08:15 AM
So glad to hear that Sammy is doing better. The word cancer is scary but knowing is better than not. I'm sure you'll do what you must for the good of Sammy. You can do it w/God's help. I'll keep praying positive for you and sweet Sammy.

06-23-2005, 08:59 AM
Still thinking of you. So heartworm was negative, but may be cancer - Hobson's choice really, isn't it? :( Glad there are some positive signs in Sam's behaviour, he seems like a fighter! Will continue to watch as things unfold and hold you and all the other sick kitties on PT in my thoughts and heart. My girls have their annual checkup tomorrow, I'll definitely be asking about feline heartworm - wonder if it's worse in USA than Australia? I'll give feedback for other Aussies on the site. Best wishes:) PS-remember to take care of YOU too!

The bill has crossed my mind but I'm trying not to think about it. I know it will be ASTRONOMICAL  ! I'm just glad that he's more comfortable now, and we'll cross the financial bridge when we'll get to it :)

Sam greeted me again this morning and drank more water for me. His IV is out and I'm sure he's thankful for that. We're waiting now on lab, xray, and ultrasound results. Hopefully I'll have an uppydate tonight on the results. Thanks again to all, and thank you kittycats_delight for the beautiful get well picture! I told Sammy today that he's one lucky kitty to get all these prayers and to be loved so much!

This is a sad update and ending to this thread. I had to make the hard decision to help Sammy on his way to the Rainbow Bridge:( . He was having trouble breathing again, and another 80 ccs of fluid was drained - pretty agressive fluid production. The results of the pathology was mesothelial cancer. The lining of the plueral cavity was cancerous with the largest clump of cells in front of the heart. There was no treatment for him, no surgical solution, the only outlook he had was to continue to lay around, not eating, working so hard to breathe, and have fluid drained off every day to keep him going. In short, his quality of life was poor and not going to get better. The cancer was too aggressive and of the type that wouldn't respond to treatment (He passed a checkup with flying colors not yet 1 year ago). I spent some time with him to say goodbye, I explained everything to him, and made lots of promises to see him on the other side. I was with him when they put him under, and bless his heart, he purred the whole time. It was instant, painless, and although my heart is breaking, I know that he is rolling in catnip and making biscuits on a soft, fuzzy blanket at RB. His doc was crying, the two techs were crying, I was crying, but I got to say goodbye and tell him that I love him. Thank you all so much for the support, good thoughts, and prayers. I'm going out of the country Saturday, and the trip may be good timing to help me heal. Again, thank you, and God bless.

:( Jennie Lu:(

06-23-2005, 03:49 PM
Jennie, I am so very sorry for your loss. It was the right decision and the only decision - the last thing you could do for sweet Sammy.

When you come back from leaving the country- come back again and tell us of all your other furkids.

Sammy will meet so many Pet Talk friend at Rainbow Bridge.

06-23-2005, 04:00 PM
Oh Jennie I am soooo sorry. I lost my RB Mytsi to mammory cancer. I know how difficult this is. Mytsi says she is with Sammy now and she was waiting for him as he came through the gates of the bridge. She promises she will be his bestest buddy until you can once again hold him in your arms. She promises to show him the best place to watch over you and be your guardian kitty and when he misses you a lot she promises to take him to her favorite duck pond and play to make him feel better.

Rest in Peace Sammy
You are loved and missed

06-23-2005, 04:18 PM
..then my heart DROPPED. :( :(

I hate to shed my tears and trying to think of useful words.. I'm speechless..

I've been going through this like I was at the vet/home with you and now that he is traveling away into the rainbow...I'm so sorry.

sam has more friends! I'll bet my edges welcomes him too and roam together.. take it easy on your trip.

06-23-2005, 05:23 PM
I'm so sorry for your loss. Play hard at the RB sweet Sammy and do say hi to another gorgeous orangie - my beloved RB Goldie who also died from cancer. You will be missed. :(

06-23-2005, 05:42 PM
I have moved this to Cat Memorial, where it sadly now belongs.
The good part is his struggles are over. The best part is he knew how much you loved him, and had that brief time of feeling better enough to purr and be with you before he had to say good-bye for the last time.

Remember, death does not win, because love lives on. Sam will be in your heart forever, and maybe he'll now be another angel watching over baby girl Sam, too.

Now Sam, you go find Uncle Mac up there near the Rainbow Bridge - I bet Lucas kitty (look for a big really furry black kitty) will lead you to him, and other people up there with kitty treats always at hand. Play nicely and rest in peace, Samkitty.

06-23-2005, 06:41 PM
This is the worst news. I'm so sorry for you, sweetie. But you made the right decision and I know that you know that. He knew how much he was loved and it was the last act of kindness that you could do for your cat. Many others went before him to greet him and show him the life he deserves at the RB.

06-23-2005, 10:44 PM
Oh Jenn, my heart is breaking for you right now. :( :( We were all praying so hard for little Sam and I was hoping he would pull through. You did all that you could and Sam was lucky to have such a loving Meowmie.

Rest easy little Sammy and enjoy your time at the RB. Make sure you look up Casper and OJ...they would love to be your friends.

Big {{{hugs}}} Jenn. Yes, you do need some time away after what you've been through. Please check in when you return, OK?

06-23-2005, 11:13 PM
I am so sorry for your loss. I am weeping here as I write this, esp. the part where you said he passed his annual check 1yr ago, my two went for their annual today, both apparently ok but for some dental next month. So it makes me realise yet again, how we must treasure every day as time for cats is so much shorter, everything that can happen seems to get condensed into a much shorter time-span. Getting away is the best thing you can do. Rest up, and we'll hear from you again upon your return. So glad you were able to help sweet Sam on his way rather than his go alone without your knowing and supporting his transition. Have fun at the RB Sam, you've earned the rest and healing that the time there will bring you till you see Mum again.

06-23-2005, 11:49 PM
I'm so sorry.

Rest in Peace sweet Sam.

06-23-2005, 11:55 PM
Jennie I'm so sorry to hear this news :( Sammy was lucky that he had you to care for him and be there when he really needed you.

06-24-2005, 12:31 AM
Jennie, I'm so sorry to hear about Sam's passing.:( I'm sure that he knew that he was very loved and you made the right decision and will meet each other again some day. RIP sweet Sam.:(

06-24-2005, 08:35 AM
Dear Jennie Lu,
My deepest sympathy for the passing of your beautiful baby, Sammy. May he RIP, full of health, at RB. Many hugs to you at this most difficult time.

06-24-2005, 09:05 AM
Oh, I am sorry very sorry to hear this. My heart dropped when I saw where this thread had been moved to. Jennie I am so, very, very sorry, but unfortunately you made the only decision that you could. Sammy wouldn't have been happy living a life under those conditions. He is now well and healthy and breathing good at the RB. RIP sweet little Sammy and know that everything possible was done for you and know how much you were and always will be loved!

I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Sam.

What a trooper he was.

Rest in Peace sweetie and have fun on the RB.

Oh Jennie, I am so so sorry to hear this news. :( But you made the right decision and Sammy is now pain free and breathing easily at the RB. I know exactly how you feel because I had to make the same decision with my Tubby boy last December and stayed with him until the end. I'm sure he and all the other pet angels are showing Sammy how around now.

You gave a good fight Sammy boy, but now it's time to rest.:(

You were loved, and your story reaches farther than you'll ever know.

Godspeed the the Bridge sweet orange boy.
