View Full Version : Peanut to the white coats

I noticed Peanut scratching at the rug in the bathroom today so I watched her for a minute. She squatted and it looked like she was peeing on the rug, but nothing came out. :( I've noticed little dribbles in the litter box (mini size biscuits....bite size perhaps?) but this isn't uncommon for Peanut so I didn't think anything of it before, but squatting and not peeing earns her a trip to the white coats tomorrow. Hopefully it's just a UTI with antibiotics as treatment. I just worry because she's getting up there in years (16 1/2) and of course the worst always crosses ones mind when dealing with elderly kitties. :(

So, all good thoughts and prayers will be appreciated. Thanks in advance and I'll be sure and update tomorrow when we get home.

Awwww, poor little Peanut. I sure hope things go well for the pretty princess and that it's nothing serious. With older kitties, any changes can bring on the panic mode for Meowmies. Now be a good girl and take your meds without any trouble.

ooops, I should clarify that I was talking to Peanut.... :D

Oh poor little Peanut! :( I hope it's not serious, but it does sound like a UTI. Hopefully, it can be treated with a bit of antibiotics.

Thanks everybody. :)

The good news is it's only a UTI. I guess as female cats get older and can't/don't groom themselves as well as they should, they get more prone to UTIs because of the positioning of their plumbing. So, she's on 1/2 Baytril for 10 days and I have to help her keep her butt clean with baby wipes, and I'll probably trim her fur in that area to help her keep it clean also. I felt so bad because I tried to get a urine sample this morning and all I got were a couple of dribbles and they were all red - poor little girl. :(

And the not so good news - but not necessarily bad news - is that her left thyroid is enlarged. They took blood and will have the results on Monday. He said if she has hyperthyroidism it's no big deal and it can be managed with meds. He noticed how she had licked the bottom of her leg clean and he said that might be a symptom of the hyperthyroidism which makes sense because you get all tense and uptight with hyperthyroidism. So if we control it with meds, hopefully she'll stop licking herself bare and maybe....just maybe...she'll relax a little more with CJ and maybe actually enjoy playing with him.....maybe? ;)

So, all in all not a bad trip. At least I know the UTI is being dealt with. I scolded her and asked her why she didn't tell me sooner that she wasn't feeling good - the little snot. ;) I've also been shooting water into her to make sure she's drinking enough to help flush it out. She just loves that part.

Thanks again for all the good thoughts and prayers. She's going to be good as new in no time. :D

So glad to find out it's just a UTI.....although these things shouldn't be taken lightly. It's treatable, and that's the main thing.

I'm keeping my fingers and paws crossed for good results on Monday and you don't have to deal with the hyperthyroidism.

Debbie, Auntie Slick sends some gently kisses to that pretty princess and some scritchies to CJ. :)

When I started to read the thread I was fairly confident that it's an UTI because it was exactly Tigris' symptoms. Now regarding the fact that Peanut is an elderly lady I think it's amazing that she "only" has two relatively easy things ;) This girl is still healthy:)

You know that with T. and F. the drinking works best when I add a little teaspoon of warm water to their food. They first lick the water and then eat:)

All the best for you and sweet Princess Peanut:)

Got a ton of stuff to do today to empty out the old motorhome, but I wanted to give a quick uppydate on Peanut. She is definitely feeling better! She wasn't really acting abnormal before, but today she is so active and looking for attention and just generally being goofy that she even went looking for CJ to pick a fight! :D It's after 9:00 am and she's still up and at 'em and sniffing at the open back door. CJ's already in bed but not Peanut.

So, once again the PT prayers did the trick and my little girl is feeling so much better. Thanks. :D

Aw Peanut! I'm glad you're feeling better. If it's any consolation Mishi is on the same drug, except he has to take 1 1/4 pills per day for the next three months! I cut the 1 into halves to it's easier for him to swallow, although he now knows what it means when I approach him with the little pill top ... my goofy boy.

I'm glad the little girl is feeling better and I hope the blood tests come back with very little else wrong with her.

Gentle hugs and smooches to Peanut and CJ.

Thanks so much everybody. Here's another uppydate. The vet called yesterday and her blood work was good. The thyroid levels were on the high side of normal so he wants me to bring her back in about 3 months to monitor her weight and get another thyroid "reading." However, this is the same thing that happened last time she had a UTI and when I brought her back her levels were right back to normal - so I'm not too worried, but I will take her back.

Now the upsetting news - to me anyway - she had a minor setback today. She always comes in the bathroom with me in the morning when I take a shower. When I got out of the shower there was a little pee spot on the rug - with two bright red blood spots next to it! I got baby wipes to help keep her butt clean (which she just adores! ) and when I went to wipe her butt it looked like maybe the blood came from her butt! You know, like it would have squeezed out her butt as she strained to pee? (sorry for being gross)

I'm going to call the vet today and let him know about this and see what he says, but by now the antibiotics should really be kicking in and she shouldn't be straining as much anymore. Twice I saw her squat this morning already with no results. :(

The only time T and/or P had a UTI in the past, the antibiotics kicked in right away and there was none of this blood stuff, so do any of you have any idea if it's normal to have a little setback like this? She is getting diarrhea from the antibiotic which I know is fairly normal... Oh, and she is still acting completely normal and eating and drinking like normal. Didn't skip a beat when it was time to beg for morning treats. Whew! :)

Any ideas?

furrykidsmother
06-21-2005, 09:47 AM
I believe that it is normal with a UTI that there could be some blood in the urine especially in the early stages of medication. When I was told that Gidget had a UTI (which she didn't as it turned out), but they told me not to be surprised if I saw blood in her urine.

Barbara
06-21-2005, 09:50 AM
It can take a day until the antibiotics kick in but you should monitor her closely- it could be crystals, sands etc.

Hey Peanut, tell your mewomie what's wrong with you. It would be so good if they could tell us:(

Shady
06-21-2005, 10:01 AM
The only idea I have is from a one time experience with a UTI that was extremely stubborn to get rid of. I'm not even sure this will help at all as Peanut is already on Baytril.

Tinkerbelle had one and yes there was blood eventually. I took her in and they prescribed clavamox. Things went fine she finished the meds and then went for the retest and all clear. Then about a week later it came back with a vengeance and she was taken back, she was vomitting now, slowly dehydrating and lethargic, it was really quick. They kept her did all sorts of tests, xrays, you name it. They were baffled. This was my very first experience with a UTI ever.

They switched her to Baytril shots, once a day for a week because of the nausea she seemed to be having from oral meds. She actually had another shot so nothing would upset her tummy.

They decided that either the Clavamox was not effective with her UTI or that she was sensitive to it in a bad way.

I noticed an improvement within 48 hrs. with the blood and straining.

She recovered quickly and fully after that. I just wonder if it's the same with them as human's, sometimes one medication will work for one person and not another. I'm wondering if a different antibiotic would work.

I'd run that one by the vet.

I hope they get to the bottom of this really quickly, it's heartbreaking to watch them suffer like that and not know what to do.

Get well soon Peanut!

Tubby & Peanut's Mom
06-21-2005, 10:55 AM
Ok, now I'm worried. He wants me to bring her in for an ultrasound to make sure she doesn't have a tumor in her bladder. :(

We're going to finish the antibiotics and add a pain killer and then next Monday she'll have an ultrasound. :(

furrykidsmother
06-21-2005, 11:11 AM
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. I certainly hope it is nothing as serious as that! Peanut, please be good and get better. Hope the meds do the trick and I hope Peanut is not in any pain. Thanks everybody but.....sorry Slick, I'm starting to panic! I remember last night Peanut was not upstairs with us, which she usually is. I went down to see where she was at and.....she was laying in the exact same spot where Tubby spent his last days! :( She normally does not lay there and I remember thinking at the time that it was odd she was sleeping there - why there?

So ever since I remembered that about an hour ago, I've been trying to hold back the panic. I'm busy here at work so I'm trying not to let my imagination runaway, but gosh darnit all I want to do is leave and get her to the vet NOW!

Probably part of what is fueling my panic also is the fact that we're leaving tomorrow to go to Texas to pick up the new motorhome and P & CJ are not coming with us since it will just be long days of driving with no fun stuff thrown in..... We're not leaving bright and early so I thought I could get her in early tomorrow morning, but my boss's mother is having surgery so I thought I'd be nice and come to work for a few hours to help him out.....drat, why did I tell him that? :(

So, I need to calm down. Peanut is still eating and drinking fine and acting completely normal, so it can't be anything too bad....can it? :(

I'm sorry to hear about your Peanut. It's frustrating not knowing what exactly is wrong with them. Is it possible Peanut has become resistant to the type of antibiotic given? Maybe trying a different type? I found out, too, that the clumping litter causes more UTI's in cats than the clay litter as the small grains "clump" onto any area that touches it when they go. Also learned to be careful with clay litter that has scents in it as some kitties are sensitive to the perfumes/deodorants. Of course, I'm sure I'm restating what you already know. Lots of cuddles to Peanut and prayers for a speedy, easy recovery.

Debbie stay calm- the main thing is about peeing and you'll know that by tomorrow. It's a good sign if she is eating and acting normal:).

Don't let it haunt you that she slept on that spot- she didn't feel purrfect- so she wanted to be alone and that spot obviously is best (in terms of Feng Shui) for cats who don't feel ok.

Will Peanut be boarding at the vet's while you are away? If not, I highly recommend it, especially since there are questions unanswered. You will feel better knowing she is there, and her caregiver (if not the vet) will have less worry placed on her.

I know a vet can palpate a bladder to feel if it is full or not, I wonder if they'd be able to feel any tumors?

Was the urine tested for crystals as well as infection?

Also, diarrhea, caused by the antibiotic, could casue some irritation and therefore bleeding.

(sorry my thought seem all messed up here. I hope they all make sense to you)

Yes, he did say there were no crystals - whew!

As for boarding, I didn't think it was anything more than a UTI, so I was just going to have the normal pet sitter come in twice a day for them and to give Peanut her meds. She has administered meds before and has no problem with it. I will see how Peanut is doing tonight when I get home, and if things seem better I'll just leave it as is, but if I think she's worse or no better, I'll just take all day tomorrow off and take her for the ultrasound tomorrow morning before we leave and my boss will just have to deal with it. He did have to "express" her bladder while she was there because I couldn't get a good sample from her before we went. He didn't mention that he felt anything unusual, but then again he wasn't specifically feeling for that either.

Oh, and I've also given the vet the pet sitter's name and I will be giving her a letter authorizing her to make decisions on Peanut's behalf. Of course if anything majorly serious happened they would consult me first, but to just bring her in and have the vet look her over she has complete authority.

Smokey the Elder had a tough URI 8 years ago and ended up having to go on a very strong antibiotic called Tribrissen since Clavamox and Baytril didn't work. Poor Peanut may have a resistant strain, or maybe the meds take awhile to kick in. Smokey had some scary output while the meds were working.

She has a small tumor. :(

Although the vet felt her prognosis was good. He thinks we caught it early enough, and she is healthy otherwise, so she is probably under the knife as we speak.

They are going to keep her there and I'll pick her up on Monday. I felt this was the best because we couldn't take her with us, and I didn't want to leave her home alone with only the pet sitter coming in, so they will take good care of her until I can pick her up, and that will also give her a good chance to heal before CJ starts stalking her again. ;)

So, please say a prayer that he gets it all and that she will have a full recovery. :(

Terry said that since I left with her, CJ has been roaming the house looking for her. Poor little guy is going to be home alone all weekend, but Anne will be coming in twice a day so hopefully he won't be too lonely. :(

I worry about CJ being left alone without you or his buddy Peanut... Have your sitter watch him close and see if he is eating.. When Rie went to Colorado and left Chester and Annie at home alone, he grieved so bad, he didn't eat and lost a noticable amount of weight.. (he had it to loose though). He had never been left that long without someone in the house with him.

Then again, CJ may love having the run of the house and hate it when you come back and invade his territory!!

Dear Deb,

I am glad that you took Peanut in this morning. And even though the news wasn't what you wanted to hear - it is good that Peanut will be at the vets while you are away.

Hopefully you will worry a bit less knowing she is in good hands.

Have a safe trip and we will be anxious to hear about Peanut's
progress.

Hugs to you.

Just got a call from the vet. He had to take about 1/2 her bladder, but he thinks he got it all. What he took out is going to the pathologist and then we'll know if he got it all - he didn't seem to want to discuss what would be the next step if he didn't get it all, so I figure we'll deal with that if/when necessary.

For now he said she is awake and looking around. I'm sure they have her on good pain meds but she's probably bewildered - poor little girl. :(

But all in all things are as good as can be expected at this point. They are taking good care of her and he will be in touch with any new news. I will also be calling in on a regular basis to check up on her.

I will have internet access for part of the trip - wherever my Verizon card works, so I will keep you all updated.

Thank you all so much for the prayers and positive thoughts but it wouldn't hurt to keep them coming for now.

And thanks Phred, you covered just about everything there. ;)

We're filling up with water now and then we're off, so I'll check in later.

Thanks again everyone. We're stopped for fuel so I thought I'd let you know that I called the vet around 3:30 pm, and it turns out they leave at 2:00 pm on Wednesdays so there was no one to answer the phone. I'm sure they have someone checking in on the surgery patients though.

I will call in tomorrow morning and let you know how she's doing.

Drat, I wish I had known because it would have been nice to have an uppydate before bed, but I know the PT Prayer line is on it and she'll be better than new in no time.

Barbara, I agree, if she had been a frail old lady cat, I'm sure he would have advised differently. Sara, you're right! And besides, the little old ladies always need Depends, don't they? ;)

On a side note, we stopped for fuel at one place and had to go to a different place because the first place ran out of fuel. First of all high prices....now a shortage?

Wishing Peanut a full return to health as soon as possible. I saw the earlier posts "it's just a UTI " and thought all was ok - just checked in again now and learned about the operation/tumour etc. You must be beside yourself with worry, having to travel at this time. My thoughts are with you and your cats, the one in surgery the other "home alone", bless him. If love and the support on here count for anything, (and they do, of course)Peanut will be just fine, it just takes time. One day at a time. Best wishes from me and my two girls:)

Got an update this morning, but it was like pulling teeth out of the girl who answered the phone. All she did was answer my questions with brief answers and I'm thinking "C'mon, I want information here!"

Anyway, she has not eaten yet, but that is normal after what she's been through. And she was eating like a little piggy before I took her in, so I'm sure once she's feeling better she'll start eating again. I asked if she had a cone on and the girl said no, she's still pretty weak and just laying around - which is also normal after what she's been through. She did say that Peanut is very sweet and they're all taking turns petting her and talking to her, so that made me feel a little better. I'm sure they still have her on some pretty good pain meds also, so she's still probably pretty out of it, but I'm sure she's wondering what's going on and why her meowmy isn't there...poor little girl. :(

But all in all it was a good update. I asked if there had been any setbacks and she said no, Peanut is doing as well as can be expected after a major surgery like this.

I miss her here in her carrier next to my chair and we drive, and yes, I even miss CJ and his constant meowing and kicking his carrier and rolling around and causing a ruckus. ;) Terry even said he misses having them here. :D

Glad to hear that Peanut is doing well and that they are making a fuss over her. Once she starts to feel a little better I am sure she will regain her appetite. By the way, yes I am sure they had to shave her leg to put the catheter in during surgery. Don't be surprised if she keeps pointing it out to you when you return. Gidget had her surgery almost 4 weeks ago and the fur is finally growing back nicely, but up until a few days ago, she kept showing it to me as if to say "is it going to stay like this forever"?

Speedy recovery sweet Peanut. Know that your Mewomie misses you and will be back with you soon. Hope CJ is doing well too.

The vet tech probably has a standard routine for answers to follow for furkids that have had major surgery. I think it sounds like Peanut is doing very well, especially with all the extra loving she's getting there. She'll be so spoiled she won't want to come home! I know you're anxious to get home and see her for yourself, and I bet she'll be glad to see you. Give her headbumpies from her hospital roomie, Sammy boy!

Hi everybody, reporting in from just south of Greenville, TX, just Northeast of Dallas. I called again about 45 minutes before closing, hoping it would be a little slow for them, and I think I was successful. The tech was a little more forthcoming with information and I also got to talk to the doc. First of all though, the tech answered in her normal business voice. I said this is Debbie and I'm just calling to check up on Peanut. She immediately went into a sweet sappy voice and said "Awww Peanut, she's such a sweety." :D I think she's charming the pants off them. :D

Anyway, onto the important stuff. The tech then asked me what Peanut normally eats. Seems they haven't been able to get her to eat much yet, but I think that's still normal and starting to get a little worrisome, but not too much yet.

Then I got to talk to the doc. He said she's doing fine for what she's been through. She's producing urine which is good, and he said she is not incontinent because where she lays is not wet, but she's not making it to the box all the time either so he's watching that. But he explained she only has 50% of her bladder left, and the bladder itself went through quite a trauma, so so far nothing is out of the ordinary. He did say that eventually the bladder will stretch a little more, but more than likely she will have to go to the bathroom more often than before, which is to be expected if your bladder is smaller. And I would think, if it's painful to move, I wouldn't make it all the way to the bathroom either!

So he said everything is going as well as can be expected and she's doing well. She is up and moving around, but still weak, which is also to be expected.

I know that even if I was home, I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing her home yet, but at least I'd be able to visit her, and let her know her meowmy hasn't abandoned her, but we'll be home before she and we know it and she's better off at the vet anyway. But yes Jen, it has already seemed like forever, and I just wish I could give her a little smooch and tell her its all going to be ok....:(

But, like I say, all in all, she's doing as well as can be expected. I will be calling again tomorrow morning, but we pick up the new motorhome tomorrow and then we travel back to Oklahoma where there is no signal, so I will check in when I can.

Please keep the good thoughts and prayers going for my little sweet pea - thanks. :( :)

I just had a phone call from the Rolling Hawze. Debbie didn't have time to post and uppydate so she asked me to....here goes.

She called the vets this morning and the girl on the phone did the same thing and her voice went all sappy. Apparently they are all falling in love with the little Princess.

Peanut is eating (yeah!!) and using the litterbox (double yeah!!) and misses Meowmie and Daddy. She's more alert and charming her way into everyones heart.

Debby and Terry get back into town on Sunday and she's hoping to squeeze in a visit. The vet is closed on Sunday but there must be a someone who comes in to check on the furbabies and Debbie will try to coordinate that time for her visit.

So all and all, things are looking good. At the end of the conversation, they were just pulling into the place where they pick up the new home.....

Debbie also said that if they are within signal range tonight, she'll post an uppydate....but that will be a long drive. So I think the next time we hear from them will be tomorrow.

She promises pictures.......:)

Finally on the road again, and within signal range. Spent the day and night from hell in Commerce and Sulphur Springs, TX. But at least we're rolling again. Will get home later than expected tomorrow, but at least we'll be home.

Now on with the uppydate. There was so much going on yesterday that by the time I remembered to call, it was too late. So, first thing this morning I was on the phone. They must have been busy because once again, the girl didn't seem to want to talk. She did say that Peanut is eating like a little piggy again :D and she has started hissing at them :D so she to me that means she is feeling much much much much better. :D :D She is also using the litter box all the time now, so things are moving along well and it sounds like Peanut is ready to come home. :D :D

Unfortunately I won't be able to pick her up until after work tomorrow night, but that is for the best also so we can monitor CJ with her before leaving them alone together....and I may just separate them while we're at work for at least the first few days - until I'm sure she's not going to hurt herself trying to get away from him anyway, and he's not going to hurt her too. But he'll probably be tentative at first anyway because of that icky hospital smell she'll have for the first few days. Will be interesting to see his reaction. ;)

Thanks for all the positive thoughts and prayers. I know they've helped pull my little girl through a real tough time - and me too.

Next step is the pathologist's report....

Lets hope that the Pathology report is good. Sounds like you will be happy to be home, doesn't sound like your trip was the greatest. Probably is best that Peanut spend another supervised day at the vet, it will only help her healing process if she is kept quiet. Also, good to keep an eye on the 2 of them before leaving them alone for any length of time. Best of luck and please keep with the updates!

It's nice to hear that the little princess is returning to normal. It must be so hard to have to wait and wait and wait. All fingers and paws crossed here that the path.. report comes back OK.

Sorry to hear about the troubles with the MH. How frustrating, but you're back rolling again and I sure hope you have no more mechanical troubles. See you in a few weeks. ;) :)

No. :( I have to wait until after work to pick her up. :( I called again this morning and the older vet tech answered and was rather abrupt (her style) and all she said was "She's ready to go home." Which, I guess, is good, but she wouldn't tell me anymore. I told her I'd be there after work and she said "Good, see you then." That was it, the extent of the conversation.

So, I'm hoping to leave work a little early, but since I've been gone, that might not go over very well with the boss. I will most definitely post an uppydate when we get home. :)
