This is a plea from my daughter Diane - they have a lovely furkid called Tabitha, and they've had her about three years.

She's moved to three separate apartments with them and - no bother.

Last year, at last, they moved into their own home for the first time.

Tabitha settled in so well - or so we thought.

Then she started peeing on the lounge carpet - first of all on one particular spot - then - EVERYWHERE. I've just spoken to Diane and she's at her wits end. They can't stop Tabitha watering !

Admittedly this carpet was put down by the people they bought the house off. At the moment to remove it would be an expense they cannot go with. Now it's not only the carpet - but the bookcase , the speakers - absolutley anywhere, but always in the lounge - none of the other rooms are bothered with, even though she has free reign throughout the house.

Tonight Diane's going to get a steamer and DO THE CARPET. But she asked if through Pet of the Day I could ask if anyone else has had this problem with their furkids - or know of a cure.

Any help you can offer will be welcomed by her.

Lynne.

:( There must be a certain smell in that area that attracted the cat to begin with. The best way to remedy the problem is to pull up that area of the carpet, paint the floor underneath to absorb the ordor and clean the carpet using the best pet stain remover you can find. There are a lot of different ones out there. I use a product put out by Hartz, but I dont know if you can find it there, but I'm sure there are alot of good products in your local pet stores. It's really important that you pull up the carpet because that odor will just return if you don't paint that area, then tack it back down again. It's a real pain, but it's cheaper than buying new carpet right?

Sorry Purley - didn't mention it - my daughter lives in Chicago, so any American products would be easy for her to get hold of.

She should be able to find an excellent pet stain remover at Petsmart or Petco. These products are designed for just this problem. I doubt that just steam cleaning the area will do it - I've tried when I 've had this kind of problem. She should use vinegar on the places other than the carpet to get that smell out. I know what she's going through - I had new born kittens last Feb in a bedroom - the new babies peed all over and I did end up replacing the carpet - but it needed it anyway. I did paint the floor before I had the new carpet installed. Tell her good luck for me!!!

She needs to take her to the vet to rule out any type of physical problems such as UTI (urinary tract infection). Once she gets the OK from the vet physically, then I'd assume it's a behavioral thing.

Yes, a vet visit first.

Then if everything checks out, an enzyme cleaner like Natures Miracle. Try and block her access to this room if that is possible until the cleaning is done.
Several years ago my cats started peeing on a mattress, and it took WEEKS to get it clean enough for them to stop. We had to keep them out of that room. Putting down aluminum foil in between enzyme treatments helps also.

Good luck!
