The finger allegedly found in a bowl of Wendy's chili belongs to an acquaintance of the husband of Anna Ayala, the 39-year-old Las Vegas woman who claimed she had bitten into the finger, San Jose police said this morning.
Police Chief Rob Davis said the friend, whose name was not released, had lost part of a finger in an industrial accident in December. Ayala had claimed she found the finger in a bowl of chili March 22 at a San Jose Wendy's.
"The jig is up," Davis said at a news conference. Davis said tests confirmed the fingertip belonged to the husband's acquaintance.
Ayala, who is also charged with one count of grand theft in an unrelated case for allegedly swindling a woman out of $11,000 in a real estate deal, has repeatedly proclaimed her innocence since San Jose and Las Vegas police searched her home April 6. She was arrested in connection with the case April 21 on a charge of attempted grand theft.
Her husband, 43-year-old Jaime Plascencia, has been arrested on unrelated felony charges of failure to pay child support and committing identity theft by assuming the name and Social Security number of his young son, allegedly to avoid having his wages garnisheed for child support.
