Samantha seems to have developed a cold. Her nose is running and she's sneezing constantly. I feel so bad for her. Is there anything I can give her to help her feel better? When my cat Kirin, had a cold when we first got him I was told to put some Terramycin in his water and it would clear it up - which it did. I still have plenty of that powder left over so would it be safe to give to my pup?

If not that, anything else? I've never heard of a dog getting a cold before... I'd appreciate any insight or help.

Thanks,
Jaime

As far as I know, dogs don't get colds, but it could be allergies. Perhaps some Benadryl would help, but you might want to check with a vet on the correct dosing for her unless someone else knows for sure how to dose it in dogs. I know Tommy has been given Benadryl before when he had an allergic reaction to a spider bite.

When Mickey was getting a runny nose and sneezing (when he was a pup) his breeder also said it couldn't be a cold, but allergies. I don't think we gave him anything and it went away in a day or two, but Jessica's suggestion sounds good.

*hugs* to Samantha. Hope she feels better soon. :)

Awww! Dogs don't get colds? Darn it, I thought this was something I could give her something for and it'd go away. I hope it's not allergies, poor girl. She'll be 3 in June and this is the first year this has happened...

I'm embarrassed to say this, but my main issue with my pregnancy right now is extreme fatigue so housework has not happened in about 3 weeks... do you think it has something to do with that??? :( Oh man, I feel horribly guilty!

Thanks for the info., I'll call my vet.

I noticed for the first time this year that Tommy got a bit of a runny nose and eyes with some sneezing off and on this spring (he's 4). It wasn't too bad though and cleared up after a day or two and hasn't been bad since it's been raining more, so I imagine his was from pollen. Samantha's may just clear up on its own soon. :) I know the pollen index in this area has been high this spring.

Not sure about the pollen level in my area - I have no allergies so I don't pay attention to it.

I called the vet and they suggested giving her two 25 milligram tablets of Benadryl. If that doesn't help, they suggested bringing her in next week.

I hope whatever is causing it will stop soon... But the one good thing about this is that at least it gives me a reason to corner him into helping me scrub the house from top to bottom tomorrow. I'm throwing him a surprise party tomorrow night and was wondering how I was going to get home to clean as manically as we need to - I'm super-protective of Samantha, so it's the perfect reason! LOL

Oh no! Samantha's sick? :(

Get well soon, pretty girl! :) I hope it's just allergies.

Has she been around other dogs? Kennel cough has the same symtoms that a doggie cold would. Even if she's not coughing, it could still be kennel cough. I wouldn't worry about it though if she hasn't been around other dogs. Could just be allergies.

Poor girl - I hate to think of her having allergies. :(

I'm sure it is spring that has brought this on for her. Murphy has the runny eyes, and Honey and Lilly are itchy. They don't have any bad symptoms, but this is something we have gotten accustomed to in the springtime. I keep Benadryl on hand and give it to them as needed and they do just fine. I'm sure Samantha will be fine too.

Good luck with the cleaning! I need to do the same thing.

Me too. Thanks everyone. I stopped by the store on my lunch break and got some Benadryl so hopefully that'll help and the sneezing will be gone! I noticed a yellow film on my car went I went out just now so it looks like pollen is high in this area right now so maybe that is what's causing it.

I'll keep you all posted. I'll also try and get some pictures posted soon. Took some really cute ones earlier this week.

Thanks everyone. She's still sneezing though not nearly as much so I do believe she's feeling better. My husband wanted me to get liquid Benadryl because he thought it'd be easier than forcing a pill down her throat but she licked at it a couple times and then wouldn't touch it, so she's doing better on her own.

I guess we'll see - if the sneezing picks back up, I'll get some pills and we'll just have to force them down (if we hide them in cheese or lunchmeat, she spits it back out). If that doesn't work, off to the whitecoats...
