...have had people ask what breed your dog is and when you tell them, they say: "it doesn't look like one" or "no it's not" ?
My RED Pit Bull Ginger was volunteering at Barnes & Noble with us this weekend when a guy asked if she was a purebred Weimeraner(sp?). I told him no, she is a Pit Bull. He said "mixed with Pit?" I said no, just Pit. He said, "No. She doesn't look like a Pit". I told him that Weimies are big and blue with floppy ears. Ginger has big bat ears.
Ok, so he's trying to tell me what MY dog is or isn't and apparently he doesn't know what either breed looks like or he wouldn't have to ask. Anyone else have this problem?

Oh yes. It happens more so with Nanook, but he's a mix & I am not 100% sure what he's mixed with, but some people think he's mixed with the most un-obvious like poodle. Some people can be pretty persisitant & offensive too. It really bugs me.
everyone thinks Misty is mixed with something, but i have only had one person insist that she is NOT a pure bred border collie lol on another board this person was talking about how she took her border collie pup to a sheep dog trial, and one of the locals insisted that the BC pup was a DOBERMAN

Everyone asks if Timber is a collie. I don't think she even looks like one lol. It drives me nuts when people see her and ask if she is a collie.
I had a pit bull when I was younger and we actually made the mistake of calling him an American bulldog. I only recently found out. The vet hadsaid he was a pit bull, but my mom thougt he looked like the dog off Homeward Bound, so we called him an AB. Now that I look back at pictures, I can tell he really was a pit lol.
People had asked if Leather is a wolf mix, and if my old dog Stitch was a white GSD.
I can just see what is going to happen when I get my catahoula. I won't mind educating people -- in fact it will be fun. But I know there will be those persistant few. "There's no such thing as a catahoula leopard dog. I can tell that's an Australian shepherd mix." OR "It's a chocolate lab mix." "Why did you cut off your mutt's tail (if he's a bobtail)?" "Is that a dalmatian mix?" "Is your dog blind (if he has blue eyes)?"
A friend on the catahoula board got a pup from my breeder. She is a black and tan with a white spot on her chest. The vet told her that ALL catahoula are blue merles. IT couldn't be a catahoula because it wasn't a blue merle. It was a dobe or rottie mix. This was even after she produced papers and a pedigree. My breeder was ENFURIATED. She sent a huge email to this vet. I don't blame her, I would be angry too.

We have not so big problems with that...
Nova looks like a English Cockerspaniel or some kind of Setter... She is a English Springer Spaniel....
And when peoples see my other dog Bubblan who also is a springer they don't belive that they are same breed...

People are so goofy. If I see a dog and I'm not sure, I just ask. Especially with bully breeds, it's so hard to tell. My friend had two pits, and, they looked nothing alike. :) But, I had people all the time tell me that Finn is a golden retriever. Ok. But, the thing that kills me is the amount of people that ask me these questions:
Is that a lab or a retriever?
Is your lab part retriever?
Is he a lab or a labrador? **my personal favorite**
Is he a golden lab? **not that bad, but, still a pet peeve of mine, because there's no such thing**
People don't seem to realize that "lab" is just a nickname for labrador retriever. I've never had one before Finn, and, I can't remember ever NOT knowing what "lab" was short for. Ugh. And, because Finn isn't fat like so many people let their labs get, they don't recognize him as a labrador.

Well, hmmmm, even you guys ask if Autumn is part cocker, it's probably because she has a docked tail but I'm 99.9% sure there is no cocker. People like to stick collie and lab in her quite often too. Pepper is obvious, nothing but cocker. Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking when they tell me what their mix is and it seems so far from their dog. I give them the benefit of the doubt though since its there dog.
I have had people mistake Sheba for either a huskey,
wolf or an elkhound.
Never bothered me though. :)

I get that a lot, especially with Tia but I don't blame them because Tia doesn't really look like the usual Dachshund. I've had 1 person argue with me that Tia was in fact a purebred Chi after I'd told them that she was a Dachshund. I've had people ask me if Winston was a Rottie before (lol don't know where they got that...). I've only had 1 person slightly know what Tango is and that was only because he has 3 Tollers of his own. Most of the time I get; "is that a Belgian sheepdog mix?" "What an adorable shepherd pup!" Does she have some sheltie in her?" I don't understand where people come up with these things; she doesn't look at all like any of the breeds usually mentioned. I've had a lady go on and on before that their are no such things as Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, she said somebody tried to sell me a "rare" breed that doesn't really exist:rolleyes:

ugh, I hate this! Once I was petting a harlequin dane at the Int.KC Chicago benched show, and someone walks by and says "I never knew there was such a thing as a giant dalmatian!" And Niño gets just about everything you might possibly see in him, but the be quite honest, it really all could be possible. here are some of what we get, including the ones I think might be true
Dal/pit
dal/ aussie mix
english setter mix
dal/ pointer mix
ACD mix
lab/ terrier/dal
purebred dal
and so many I can't think of off the top of my head.
Layla got the "is she blind" thing all the time, and also the (Perfectly normal) question, "can she hear" also all the time.
The worst one is when you are walking Niño through the playground and someone comes right up to Niño's face and asks, "Will he bite me??"
OH! Yesterday I saw a bicolor sheltie and the owners were absolutley shocked I knew what he/she was!

lol I know the feeling! I am a teenager, I look much younger then I am. I met a guy walking a rodesian ridgeback pup and my frind asked me what breed, I think the owner almost fell over in shock when a teenager knew exactly what breed his dog was, and what they were bred for and known for etc.. lol another couple I met was shocked when I saw them walking their 2 schipperkie's and I took one look and said "schipperkies?" lol I think they were really suprised that I have even heard of the breed much less recignized them lol then I told them that I have a schipperkie mix at home, thats how I recignized the breed so fast lol
people pretty much know that Beanie is a Pomerainian. Gracie on the other hand, i can't believe all the guesses i get for her. they've guessed alaskan husky, malamute, siberian malamute, and my personal favorites "is she part wolf/coyote?"
i mat a guy with a pekingese and he was so shocked that i knew what it was. he said lots of people think he's a pomerainian.

I've seen a few of rare breeds that I was able to ID and the owners were shocked, like a Large Munsterlander or Spinone Italiano.
IRescue452
05-12-2005, 09:21 AM
I've made my own share of dumb mistakes, guessing a spinone was a pointing griffon and a springer was an english cocker, but at least they looked the part and I'm willing to admit that I was wrong. Is Gracie a Karelian Bear Dog?-lol, sorry couldn't help myself :D siberian huskies are very popular here but must be a rare dog by where you live considering she is a lovely example of what the breed should look like.

I actually have the opposite problem!! Duncan is a mixed breed and people often stop and ask what breed he is...I tell them that he is an American Heinz 57 adopted from the shelter and then they try to guess what type of mix he is...I don't mind, it's interesting to hear some of the ideas people come up with...very few people say gordon setter at all. (In fact I can only think of 1 man who had 2 gordons of his own.) One guy said he was probably part "borderline collie" :p :p :D  I died laughing at that one!!!!
There was this really snooty man that used to walk his giant schnauzer at a park near my house. Duncan and I would see them there in the mornings. One day, Duncan was off leash and ran over to this dog (on leash) to play and the man FLIPPED out! He yelled at me to get my "lousy mutt away from his $5,000 show dog."
So I proceeded to tell him that Duncan was no mutt, he was a Hovawart imported from Germany, that their are only 20 Hovawarts in the US and that he cost $8,000!!! ;) :p :D
I couldn't resist!! He was so rude!! After that, he wanted to talk but I didn't give him the time of day!! ;)

oh my gawwd. SO many people think Gonzo is mixed or not even a BC at all. . . my favorite was a yard guy who insisted that Gonzo is a SpringerxTerrier. Like, insisted :p. . then he proceded to tell me that he has a Keeshond and a "TOY Beagle"!! LMAO. I was like, "ok. . I dont think I'll take dog advice from anyone with a 'Toy Beagle'. . jack@ss."
I dont really care that most people think Gonzo is a BC mix. . sometimes I think so too. He is N o t correct, at all :) he has a total gay tail and he's cow hocked. A lot of people think he's a HuskyxBorder Collie, or a Pit BullxBorder Collie (yes, I'm serious) or an Aussie/Heeler mix
lol hey, someone asked me if Misty was a pittie border collie mix lol most people thing she is a sheperd mix  and of coarse the one person who insisted that Misty was a blue heeler/border collie lol I find that very amusing as almost everyone can pick out Shadows breeds she is a border collie cross sheltie, one person yelled out their car window "NICE BORDER COLLIE!" and everyone has picked out either the border collie or the sheltie, its usually "sheltie mixed with what?" or "border collie mixed with what?" mean I dont think she looks particularly like either breed, the only give away for the shletie is her head shape and her coat, the border collie just gives her a little extra size, the tri colour(its the BC type tri not sheltie type tri) and her eyes, she has the BC eye, she uses it to scare people lol

I don't have too many problems with my 2. Although when I tell people Sadie is a Rat Terrier they look at me funny because they have never heard of a Rat Terrier and I have to tell them she looks kinda like a JRT. Never had problems with Maggie though, everyone is always commenting on how hyper she is though.

I've had my share of people calling my two boys Collies. It's understandable since Kai's pretty big for a Sheltie. My photo teacher saw my prints and swore that they were both Border Collies. But other than that, I haven't had anyone insist that they were an outrageously different breed.

We get asked all the time what Bijou is but no one has been too off the mark when they make their guess. They usually think she's a border collie or a sheltie and I find myself saying she's "just" a collie, lol. I guess Bijou's tri markings throw folks off -- they think collies can only be sables, like Lassie (I've been hoping to find a nice blue merle rough to join Bijou -- that will really give people pause!). Then I add she was the only tri rough from a litter of sables and soon after, I hear a story about how they grew up with a collie too, etc., etc., etc.
I think my mother is the worst, though -- because I did grow up with a collie as our family pet when I was a girl, my mother now calls my Bijou by the name of our dearly departed family pet (from 25 years ago!) everytime she visits! It's really weird. She also insists that "toy collies" (she's referring to shelties, but she doesn't realize that) are the same exact breed as collies, "just smaller." Sigh. She's sweet and I adore her, but she has her own ideas about things and she's not about to change her mind now!

People used to ask if Willie was a border collie too, and look doubtful when I told them he was purebred collie. It's funny because not only was he purebred but he was championship material :D. I guess some people figure only sable collies that look like Lassie are collies.
I've had people ask if Tommy is an Irish setter because of his red coloring, and many ask if he is a mix between Irish setter and golden. I haven't had any insist that pure golden isn't right. (I do have a copy of his pedigree).
On the opposite end, I've had people claim their dog was a purebred and it was obvious to me that it wasn't, or that it was in fact another breed. One in particular that comes to mind was an Akita that the owners insisted was a smooth chow. There are smooth chows, and I've seen pictures of them, but this dog was a textbook example of an Akita (taller, larger, longer muzzle, mottled coat color, etc), and they got the dog at a shelter. Smooth chows still have a distinctive chow face. But I didn't argue with them, I just nodded and smiled and said the dog was beautiful. I think it's a bit silly to stand and argue with someone on what breed their dog is.

Yep... happens with Smokey all the time. People think he's an American Bulldog. I tell them I'm sure he's not. They tell me he's not a pit. I say I know both his parents and also his paternal grandparents. Definitly not American Bulldog. I can see where they would say that but I think it's only cuz Smokey is white. Oh well. He's a sweet dog, that's the only important thing.

All the time...she is a yorkie poo...half yorkshire terrier and half toy poodle...and people tell me all the time she doesn't look like either breed...and she really doesn't. You can see the yorkie at certain times and you can see the poodle..but actually her hair is like neither...its more wirey. Only curl is top of her head..she has a bushy tail.

Before Clipse though Emily was always getting called Lassie....or mini lassie.
I had one parent tell her child that Emily was a collie just like Lassie and when I said actually no she is a sheltie, the lady got all huffy and told me that she knew her breeds and that was a collie......*shrugs*

People always Ask if Tikeya is a Wolf or a Malamute... ok she doesnt even look like a Mal, considering Mals dont have Blue eyes and she is Tiny.
And when people ask if she is a wolf, I laugh. A wolf?? omg If I have yet to see a wolf look like a siberian husky.. they look more like GSD's...

To get your pic to show up on a post, right click the picture to get properties and copy and paste the properties onto the post. Then make and image link thepictureproperties. Don't put spaces in the img boxes, I just did that so they would show up. The pictures need to be online already, not just on your computer, though I guess some computers will do this. To get free picture hosting online use sites like imagestation.com or tinypic.com and they will give you a link to the picture and also the properties and image link. You can put several pictures on one post this way, also.
Example: heres my siggie with a space in the first box so it shows up how it would look in the post http://img228.echo.cx/img228/6964/again3cv.png

To Be honest, not to comment unwelcomed,I know this post is old, but I couldn't resist. I owned wolf hybrids, and to be honest, I haven't found a common dog breed that looks like a wolf, coloring is all off on all the huskies and mals.....GSD's are commonly bred to make hybrids, but unfortunately, with them you get the pitched "roman" nose and the "hip dysplasia" problems and then the stance that generally comes with a good bloodline GSD. The closest looking dogs I have seen are dogs that are not so common.
this is the only dog I think looks closest....

Also, with lilly, I get soooo MAD, when people say she looks like a rott......if you lookat her in person, her color is tooo TAN, not at all chocolate rich dark brown like in rotts. PLUS SHE HAS A WHITE MARKING ON HER CHEST!! So if anything, there's NO WAY I could ever think someone could call her a pure rott, but they do. Also, Her tail is long with a bit of a bushy look, Her head is completely shaped wrong, AND her ears are tooo long....it drives me crazy to see the anoying looks and comments she gets, people actually grab their children and pull them back when we walk her.....boy that really urks my nerves.
When we had our wolf hybrids people would ask if they were huskies, not honestly, I will post pics of them, NONE look like huskies, lol..... It would make me laugh sooo hard! And I was sooo impressed at the ignorance some people showed with their dog breeds. Now ignorance isn't necessarily a bad thing, because ignorance is the absence of knowing better, unlike stupidity, which is the act of knowing better and doing something anyway, lol. ANyway, i just wanted to comment, because I think it is funny how stubbern people can be.
well, just wanted to share, lol......I loved my babies... they acted just like dogs, and little lilly had preferrence over all of them, only because she slept in the house, and they didn't, so even though she came in after all of them, she was Omega Female, lol.....anyway.....thanks! Cassie, in the last pic of all three, what order are they in? I was wondering who the last one is in particular....
Shawnee does have a face that looks very much like a wolf, the eyes are close together and the snout is thin and pointed with sharp lines....

The furthest to your right, facing away from you is Shawnee, the middle is Apatche and the last, furthest to your left, is Dingo. Now for a little background history... (don't shun me, please, I didn't originally breed these guys, only fell in love and adopted them after their owner died) OK, Apatche is the oldest, who was bred with Shawnee, to create several litters, including the one where dingo is from. But without knowing it, shawnee and Dingo got together while apatche was being boarded for some vet work. So the two created a litter at which Shilloh came from. Also, with bear, he is a rescue case, out of somewhere like wash. Oregon area, who was a pup and a man that had a small exotic zoo, had let the animals all breed and interbreed and have problems, and then they began to starve so they began eating each other, SPCA and wild rescue came in to save them, had to euthanise many, but the two remaining pups, bear and his sis. Bear was driven down (after a court ruling saying Greg(my mom's ex-fiance) could take him under condition he was neutered) and thn brought back. He never quite fit in. He was beat up bad one winter, SO bad he had to be taken to the vet, hen cut and removed most of his back half, and it took over a year to heal. He was then placed ina lower enclosure, and the two were cut off by a fence. That is when i rescued my pup Chance, you've all heard about, and he and bear became close buddies. Bear, when going in for a follow up check, was placed on a scale, scared I might add, had a termometer shoved up his but, had 12 vet techs standing around him and they were shoving a muzzle on him, so he got scared and bit someone. They tried to put him down, but we fought them really hard, we loved out bear boy, and we knew he was just scared. Finally they quaranteed him for 14 days, (it was agony waiting) and we finally got him back, he spent 2 months inside the house tied to the table(he tried to kill our cat) and my mom spent nights nursing him and sleeping with him so he would whine as much. He never held it against the pack for attacking him, and still enjoyed his daily, supervised romp sessions with the others of the pack. Well, wow, I could tell stories for hours. But I would never recommend anyone to have wolf hybrids as pets, they need more than a normal dog, and they have many medical problems. If kept in an apartment, their hair will generally, for some reason, end up coming out. I loved my guys, but do not recommend others to buy hybrid pups. Adoption yes, but I don't recommend the promotion of this breeding, its dangerous and unfair to the pets...anyway, just commenting, I really did love my guys....
Thanks again'

Awww, I am sure she does, I just dont promote the breeding and purchase of these wonderful, exotic, but still very Wild. They have many inhibitions, and generally don't do well with strangers and noisy situations. Ours were socialized well aand we had very few problems. LOL, whats funny is the one who barked the most were our dogs, lol. The only one we had howl was bear, the others only bellowed when the neighbor ran his dog up and down the street, literally( this lazy man sat and drove his truck while his poor dog, that had knee prob. etc. a lab, a fat one,, ran beside him.) anyway, we loved our guys, I just don't think people should breed them, as uneducated people get them as novelty pets, kinda like cocka-poos and those other breeds people buy as a new fashion mix....anyway..thnks! and I am sure she loves her pup!!

Not to randomly bump up an old thread, buuut.. :D
I have only had two people correctly identify Visa as a Belgian. One because his sister had one, the other because she used to have one. Everyone else automatically thinks me dog is something else. So far I've had "black German shepherd," "German shepherd/collie mix," "black collie," "German shepherd/wolf mix," and "wolfdog." When it was my first day doing work experience at the shop I work at, I came in, saw Visa, and told her breeder "Nice groenendael." It was those simple words that made her beg my boss to hire me -- because I knew what a groenendael was. :D :p

Yes. Since Eli is so slim and small for a Labrador, they think she's some kind of Greyhound mix. And they think Baybe is a purebred Dachshund, which he is not. And Hooch, well they call him an English Mastiff, which is also wrong. I hate it when someone tells you what kind of dog your dog is! ~lol~

I always get the "She's too light to be a Lab" for Nova. Yellow Labs can be cream to fox red, Nova is cream. People seem to know that Luka is a Lab. And with Mandy, I usually get Lab mix or Dalmation mix, because of the spots on her ears. I used to think Lab before I owned one, and now I don't see an ounce in her. Dalmation - absolutely not. And when I tell them what she is, they are like "... really? Are you sure?"

MILLIONS OF TIMES! Since Red is an Azores Cattle Dog, and they are very rare, everyone asks, or everyone says, and everyone's wrong! These are what they have thought Red is:
Pit Bull
Cane Corso
Puppy Dane (which was TOTALLY WRONG, he doesn't look anything like a Dane in my oppinion)
Mastiff
Bulldog mix
American Bulldog
Rottweiler mix
Australian Cattle Dog (which was a little bit close, but barely)
And whever I say, "No he's an Azores Cattle Dog", they say "No, he is a Pit bull" or whatever other breed. It gets pretty annoying ;) Esspecialy since I bring him everywhere with me!

Ive had people think my Sasha was a Pappllion mix.
Not at all. We live in a very small place where I have NEVER in my 21 years seen a papallion. NEVER.
her mom was a terrier mix and her Dad was a a Border Collie. and Ive had people ask if she was a sheltie to. I can see that cause the marking are kinda similar, but not really and shes teh size of a sheltie.

yes everyone thinks sammy is a springer. just because of his coloring. they say "I thought cockers only came in brown." and I am like "No, they come in lots of colors."

I took Comet to Petsmart today to see what size of a crate he'd need and people kept on asking me if he was a Cocker mix or a Golden puppy...lol. I did have a couple people recognize his breed though :)

My pyr is multi colored, not all white...he is sooo beautiful with big tan/orange badger spots on his body with freckles too and a beautiful mask including black around the eyes...for 7 yrs now, my groomer continues to list him as a grt pyr/st.bernard mix there is nothing st.ber in him and he has the double dew claws as well...my vet cracks up, says it's just really rare to see the mask in the breed, but he is a pyr all the way

Is there a picture of your Pyr online somewhere? I'd love to see. Thanks!
The funniest breed misID I've ever read about was in the newsgroups (r.p.d.) years ago. Someone mentioned that a little girl saw a Harlequin dane and excitedly told her mom, "Look, a cow!"

Many people do not believe Nebo is a purebred siberian husky because he is red and white. Most people seem to think huskies can only be gray and white. I've had several people question me if he's purebred when I just told them what breed he is.
A lot of people think he is a malamute too, I've even heard wolf and coyote lol.

My dog Koosty is part pit, and who knows what else. Pit is the only part I know for sure. Nobody ever believes he has pit in him, though, because he's just a little taller than a cocker and doesn't have a wide mouth. Doesn't bother me too much, though, because it usually means that those people will actually give him a chance instead of just writing him off as a vicious pit.
The biggest problem I've had is with my family breeding AKC beagles. If they aren't tri-colored, then nobody believes they are purebred beagles, or beagles at all. That one really, really aggravated me as a kid, and still sort of bothers me now.

I've got a good one for you.I rescued an Akita from our local animal control. At first they listed him as a black lab. When someone with sense figured out what he eas they were going to put him down after 4wks.because of his breed.Thank God i got him on his third week.I still want to know how you confuse a lab with an akita?
lol I remeber the firsy Vet we took Shadow too insisted that Shadow was a cocker spanial..she is a border collie x Sheltie and anyone with a brain can figer that out because both breeds are VERY obvious and every lay person off the street has been able to guess correctly. lol

We have a Sheltie or Collie/Border Collie mix at the kennel I work at right now...one of my coworkers walked up to the lady and said wow, I've never seen a black and white sheltie in person. And the lady goes "Oh, shes a purebred border collie, we have papers" real snotty like. My coworker just said oh okay and walked away...and let me tell you, this dog looked just like Bijou, just black and white, and was about as big as a sheltie. :p

Well i will get people guessing Ritas breed all the time wrong, but they are just asking really, but one time i actually had some girl, i was in the drive thru and she saw Rita in the back seat and goes "oh its a Pittbull, cool , i have two of them," and i told her no she is not a Pittbull she is a Presa Canario a spanish breed very rare, & she actually goes, "are you sure??" LOL
Im like arent you supposed to own two Pittbulls? how can u not know she isnt one, besides she is twice the size of what a normal Pitt should be, but she thought i was confused and didnt know my dogs breed,. :D haha
