I'm at work and bored, so I decided to look at petfinder.com (Why do I torture myself???) Believe it or not, doing so just MIGHT have saved a cat's life.

Meet Salem. http://www.petfinder.com/fotos/MI287/MI287.4383637-1-pn.jpg

She's at the Allen Park Animal Shelter and is scheduled to be killed this week because they don't have space. :(

Here's what they say about her:

Salem Blueeyes was rescued from a vacant apartment. She likes being petted although she is a little picky of where she is to be petted. Her nickname is LoveBunny, because she likes to snuggle up against our hand with her soft fur. We are not sure if she is a male or female, because she doesn't trust us enough to check. However, she is litterbox trained and loves soft treats.

Salem is looking for a quiet home where she can be as fussy as she pleases! She (or he) is schedule to be EUTHANIZED NEXT WEEK because of lack of space in our shelter. Please visit Salem and give her a chance at finding a loving home.

I've already put a call into the shelter that I want to come get her. I've also alerted PurrsAbound to let them know. If everything goes well, I should have her at my house tomorrow. I just hope I'm not too late. :(

I'll keep you posted.

What a beauty Salem is... I love the markings and the lovely cream colour!

I spoke with the ACO this morning. Salem (name to be changed REAL soon!!) is not ready to be released until Thursday (his date with death). Salem is a male, according to the sign on his cage, and he's neutered. I'm taking a ride to the shelter tomorrow to check him out and let him know he's coming home with me. The ACO knows that I'm taking him. I want to check him out because the picture makes his eyes look "cloudy". I want to make sure it's just the poor photo quality and not a condition. If it IS, it's still no big deal.

PurrsAbound is going to do a courtesy post for me in an effort to find him a furrrever home.

Any suggestions on names??? I THOUGHT about Allen, seeing as he's at the Allen Park Animal Shelter.

Thank you ever so much for saving Salem!!! Allen... hmmm... since I'm called Spartacus myself... Allen seems a bit drab... Parker (as in Allen Park Animal shelter) sound cool though!!!

Otherwise there's always the funny Random Cat Name Machine (http://www.geocities.com/debverhoeven/cats/namemachine.htm) to help you out!!!

Good Job Donna. I think you need to change that quote under your avie though to Donna's Cat House-Always Vacancies LOL

I am very glad you are saving "salem's" life. He is beautiful and doesn't deserve a death sentence for any reason but especially for lack of space. I kinda like Salem but I don't think it suits him well. I do like Parker.

My suggestion for a name would be "ORION"

Well, I couldn't wait to see him so I went to the shelter today before I went to work.

What a sweet boy (girl?? ACO isn't sure of his sex. I told him I'd look when I got there) he is!!!! He was putting his paws through the bars, rolling on his belly for rubs and head butting the bars for me to pet him!! How anyone could've just abandoned him in an apartment building with no food or water is beyond me!! (Jerks!!!  )

He looks young and very thin, but he is a Siamese mix. His eyes are fine, so I guess it was the picture that distorted them. As I was leaving for work, my phone rang. It was the ACO. He said I can pick him up tomorrow( Tuesday) (have to wait till AFTER the City Building Inspectors inspect my apartment).

PurrsAbound has agreed to do a courtesy post so I can find him a furrrrever home.

I LOVE the name Parker!!!

So, Parker will be coming home tomorrow afternoon and I will be SURE and post pictures!!!

Okay, smack my butt and call me sucker!! I've been thinking so much about this calico girl that's in the next cage next to Parker at the shelter. She looks just like my Shortie Girl (Munchkin) except she has normal legs. She is in desperate need of a bath and probably has earmites. I have not been able to get her off my mind since I left the shelter this morning.

My friend Kathy (bad person to ask for advice seeing as she has 19 cats!! ) suggested that I could put them in the same room together to keep each other company, since they are close at the shelter. Parker is neutered, so I know there won't be any kittens produced. I know I can't save the world. But I just hate to think of this precious little girl left behind

What do you guys think??? Am I nuts or what???

No, you're nowhere near nuts. You're simply saving the cats of the world, one by one - :)

You are a prime example of why I don't go anywhere near the Humane Society in Ann Arbor. When I did volunteer work there, back in 1979, I brought home one dog and 4 cats.

That also may be why my animal-loving friend Cheryl volunteers at a horse sanctuary. She says that she still wants to take them all home, but... her yard just isn't that big.

I say go for it. You might not be able to save them all but there is a reason that little girl is "calling" to you. She WANTS YOU to take her home cause she knows it's a good place for her and the best place for her to find her furrever home. If you can do it Donna do it.

BTW....I agree wholeheartedly with the caption NOW under your avie.

Parker looks so sweet, I'm glad you noticed him and save his life. :) LOL! Of course you can't leave the girl behind! ;)

Good luck with them!

Donna, you have to follow your heart. It hasn't failed you yet, and besides you would never be able to live with yourself if you didn't take her and you found out she was put down. And you know you're going to ask about her so quit beating yourself up about it and just go get her aleady - will you? ;) :D

Well, after spending 4 hours at Belle Tire having my brakes done and spending over $100, I have just $15 left. $10 has to go to Parker's adoption. The ACO was a nice guy so I'm HOPING he'll give me a 2 for 1 deal.

I'll let you know.

:p:p:p

I AM nuts!!!!!

I went and picked them BOTH up!! They are now in my back room. The llittle calico needs a bath desperately!! Her white is "brownish". They both need earmite medicine and a dose of flea stuff. But I've gotta wait a little bit as they are both skittish.

In an effort to get them used to each other kinda quickly (yeah, I know, but I'd rather have them both in one room than have to give up two of my rooms), I've put the little calico in a large crate for a while and gave Parker time to get settled. Then I'll switch them so she can have some time.

Parker was definitely abused, as when I go to pet him, he cowers and hisses. Calico seems to like the security of the crate. I MAY just set up the larger cage for one of them and take turns so hopefully they will get accustomed to each other.

When I went to the shelter, I asked the ACO (a really nice man) if I could take BOTH of the cats for the price of one. He asked me what I was planning on doing with them. "Take them to a chinese restaurant! Of course I was only kidding! I told him I wanted to find both of them good homes. He asked me how many cats I had. I said 3 (Okay, I fibbed, but it was for a good cause). I told him I didn't live in Allen Park (he said he didn't want 5 cats in one household in his town). Then he said, "Look, you're a nice lady and you're trying to do good thing, so I'll give them both to you for nothing.

I was SO happy!! :D:D:D I told him when they both get adopted, I'd be back for the third cat (a sweet big orange boy) to find him a good home.

I feel so good! I now have Shortie, a calico Munchkin and a beautiful calico cat who could be her twin, except for the legs.

I promise, in a day or two, once they calm down a bit, I'll post pictures. WOOHOO!!!!!!

Jen,

I'm glad too. I couldn't walk out of the shelter with only Parker when she was begging to come too.

It's gonna take a while for the both of them to get used to each other. But as long as I have enough catnip, love and patience, it'll happen.

I'm ALSO glad I don't live in Allen Park!!

Just a short update.

I put the cage in the room and put "Puddin" in it giving free rein to Parker. She's got a hammock, litterbox and food all inside. This way they're BOTH protected and I don't have to jump up at all hours of the night breaking up kitty fights. They're both pretty scared. Poor babies. :(

A TORTIE POINT MEEZER!!!! Lucky Parker, and lucky calico girlie. (How about Priscilla for her)? I'd clean the place out if they were on death row like that. :( I'd love to see pictures of them both when you have time Donna. ;) Glad the "No Vacancy" sign's malfunctioning. :D

I was able to get 2 pictures this morning AND figure out that Parker is a girl!! She came up to me and rolled on her back looking for belly rubs, so I was able to see whether she had "equipment" on her or not. NOT!!! I still like the name Parker though.

Here she is:

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid168/p7f5ac209d77e70018d0af4c408c49c26/f427f456.jpg

Here's Puddin:

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid168/pdf8778bc10578b49dda80c0f160b661a/f427f417.jpg

Is she the spitting image of Shortie or what??

Both are still scared to death, hissing and growling at each other. Hopefully with time that too will subside. I was able to put Advantage on both of them too. I still need to clip their LOOOONG nails and check out their ears. Once I get my IRS check, they're going to the vet.

Next week I have to pack them up for a couple of hours while they inspect my apartment. If the landlord finds out I took them in, I'll never hear the end of it.

*sigh* Oh well, that's what I'm all about!! ;)

Yeah Donna! Congratulations Parker and Puddin'! You now have the best chance ever of finding a furever home! :D

The name Puddin' reminds me of Rumor's nickname Prunella Puddin' Pants. :D Also, now that you know Parker is a girl, it makes sense since she seems to have tortie markings on her face and tail. Like QSA says a Tortie Point Siamese! Cool! Bet there's not too many like her in this world. :D

I got an email from PurrsAbound. They're going to pay for Parker's vet visit. I'll have to pay for Puddin's, but I don't care.

Parker is letting me pet her head, although she's still flinching when I do. But once she knows I'm not going to hurt her, she's okay with it.

Puddin seems to like the security of the cage. It's got all the comforts of home and allows them both to be in the same room till they get used to each other. She doesn't mind me petting her BRIEFLY. I'm beginning to think BOTH of these girls have been abused. ;(

These guys are both going to need some time. But I've got it. Why not use it on these two cuties!!

Parker has finally eaten and used the litterbox! I'm feeding them both dry kitten food as well as canned. Parker is so thin you can see her spine. :(

Puddin literally gulps down the food, looking over her shoulder at Parker every so often. That's a sign that she was on her own for a while, fending for herself.

I was able to pet both girls for quite some time, which means they're slowly coming around. I let Puddin out to walk around and Parker came down off the window ledge growling. I sat by with a squirt bottle just in case. There was the usual growling and hissing, but nothing major.

I'm waiting for the vet to open so I can take Parker in to be checked.

So far, so good!! ;)
