View Full Version : New foster!
I got a new foster baby. No pics yet since I just got back from work. The poor thing is filthy and covered in oil, grease, and all sorts of crud. She's a young Chihuahua and/or Italian Greyhound mix. She had puppies VERY recently, but the person who found her thinks they are dead. I gave them my phone number just in case they do find some puppies though. The lady said that people were spraying her with a hose, throwing things at her, and chasing her. The poor little thing is so timid from all that she's been through. She crawled right into my arms though and leaned all her weight into me and just closed her eyes like she was praying nothing else was going to happen to her. Since I got her home (10 min ago), she's perked up some and is exploring around with the cats. I'm about to take her to my boyfriend's to meet my dogs and have a nice long bath. I will post pics later on tonight :) (after we both get some food in our bellies!)

Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable that someone would treat a dog like that. :(

What an image in my head! :) Nope, nothing like that's gonna happen when you are at Aly's house!! :)

Yup, another sweetie pie tucked herself into Miss Aly's heart! :) Take care of both her tummy and yours, and we'll wait patiently (okay, maybe not very, but we'll try) for pictures!
I just tried to snap some pictures before we left, but was unsuccessful. She always wants to be right in my face and snuggling up to me so it was hard to aim the camera at her. Thought I'd share this one though, hehe. I will definately post better ones later. (she's 9 lbs by the way)

Hear! Hear! She couldn't be in better hands! Bless you as always, sweet, dear Aly for your compassion and unselfishness. She is the cutest little thing! When I saw her big eyes, I almost wept. Can't wait to see more pictures and get another update. "Aly the Angel"
Oh my gosh. We just went through a TERRIFYING experience. I am wanting to smack myself in the face after that whole thing....
After I left my house, I stopped and picked up a pizza and then continued on to my boyfriend's place. I stepped out of the car and set the little girl down on the ground. I had her on a leash and harness because the collar seemed to freak her out. Well all of a sudden, she tried to dart under the car. I think that is her comfort zone because she really smells like she's been living under cars. I bent down to gently pull her out and she tensed her whole body and picked her head up. Her head went between the space where my back tire is. I tried to pull it out a few times, but she was stuck. Trying not to panic, I reached around me and grabbed her can of open dog food from work. I tried to entice her to move her head certain ways, but she was freaked out and wouldn't follow the food. Then she started spazzing out and moving her body all around until her head got wedged above the tire. I had to support her whole body and make sure she could breath and TRY to stay calm so she'd stop flailing. I started yelling for help but no one was around. Thankfully my cell phone was within reach and I called my boyfriend (he was at work not at home). He didn't answer. I paged him and called him a dozen times in a row. Then I really started to panic and scream for help some more. I finally called my boyfriend again and he picked up. He dropped everything at work and raced home. Thankfully, it is only about a 7 minute drive. By the time he got there, I had been out there for 25-30 minutes with her head stuck. My back was about to collapse. It has already been hurting from a kidney infection and then it started hurting even worse because I couldn't shift positions. It took a lot of manuevering and a lot of praying, but my boyfriend remained calm and got her out eventually. She was shaken up, but okay. I have her in the crate resting right now. I warmed her up some canned dog food as a treat. That was something I NEVER want to experience again. I can't tell you how scared I was that she'd strangle herself or something. Oh my. Oh yeah and my pizza ended up upside down on top of my car, ah well. I don't care about anything else, just that the little girl is okay.
So, long story short, it will take me a bit longer to get some pics
*edit* Just looked in the mirror and I'm covered in black streaks all over my face, arms, and hands. You'd think I just crawled out of a burning building, sheesh.

Oh Aly, I hope you got a good night sleep. It was so wonderful of you to take this little girl in. I am sure that she appreciates all that you have done for her already. She really is a little sweetie. I hope today will be a better day for all of you, and look forward to more stories and pictures.
We're awake now and both calmer than we were yesterday :)
Yesterday must have been horrible for the sweet thing. She's been through SO much, I'm very surprised she didn't try to bite me during any of it. She did snap at Skylar and Lolly, but that is to be expected since she was so terrified all day. She was also on my lap at the time and I am betting she hasn't had very many chances to be warm and cozy on a lap, so she was being a little protective. I'm pretty sure she'll grow out of it soon. Its very normal for the street doggies to do that with what they feel is a rare resource. She'll soon learn that I'm going to make sure she can have a lap ANY time she wants one for the rest of her life.
I gave her a bath last night - really shouldn't have tried that alone! She stood on two legs the whole time and clutched my arm with her front paws. She kept trying to lift her body out of the tub so the whole thing was a struggle. It wasn't TOO bad, but just hard to scrub her while she's acting like a drowned rat. She got back at me by jumping into my lap when I took her out of the tub and I was reaching for the towel. Ahh well, if she's gonna be wet, I guess I have to be as well.
She still hasn't pottied. All she does when I take her out is try to climb up my leg or look for a little spot to hide in. I really hope I can get her to go this morning so we don't have to deal with that stress. I was thinking about her day yesterday, and the poor thing must be exhausted. She lost her puppies either yesterday or the day before, had people throwing stuff at her, yelling at her, and chasing her, got dragged out from a car by a stranger and taken to a vet clinic, had to sit in a cage and get poked and prodded at the clinic, got into my car, met all my cats, back to the car again, got her head stuck for about 40-45 minutes :(, saw boyfriend's apartment, met more animals, and had a bath. Geez, I'd be biting someone after that day. No wonder she likes to bury her little head in my arm and shield herself from whats going on.
I'm taking name suggestions. I was thinking aboiut Piglet, but I don't know if that is dignified enough, hehe.

I think she's a Bianca! (Italian for white) Or maybe a Gwennie? (Guinevere=white or fair) Or Peanut - 'cause she's just a wee Peanut of a girl?
Poor scaredy sweetie! Has she let Snugglemaster Reece near enough for him to snuggle with her yet, or is she still too shy?

Keep the name suggestions coming. I like them all so far, but I'm still thinking about it. Little girl is resting in her crate eating a snack right now because she was getting bratty with the cats. She snaps at them if they get near me and she tries to growl if there's food anywhere near. Her growl sounds funny though. Its like she's trying to be mean, but can't. When she's on the ground walking around, she just ignores the cats and dogs so I'm almost positive she'll get over this snapping/growling protective business. She reminds me of Cinny in sooooooooo many ways. She even has an uppy and a downy ear. Haha, my boyfriend said "You should tell Micki about this little girl" and I said "Riiight, Micki's husband just might kill me if I show up with another doggy for them". Hehehe :D I'm sure I can find this one a home pretty quickly.
She's got some demodex mange, which you may notice in the pictures. That should clear up now that she's on a good diet and I'll be giving her some Relief shampoo baths.
She's even more glued to me today than she was yesterday. She doesn't like me to be out of her sight. She's VERY good and quiet in her crate though, which makes my life tons easier. I think she is just so grateful to not be out on her own anymore. You can see it in her eyes. They tell a story. She's the sweetest girl, but you can see so much hurt and confusion in there. But then now you can also see extreme gratefulness. I wish I could capture the true color of her eyes in pictures. They are a deep, beautiful amber color with specks of gold.
Here she is pre-bath. I had already wiped away tons of black gunk, but you can still see some on her. The water running off her in the bath was SOOOO dirty.

Look how grateful she is:

No clue why she looks yellow in the pics.. there's no yellow stains on her at all. Her bath wasn't the best, but I'll give her another in a few days. I just wanted her cleaned mostly so I could give her some Frontline. I also de-wormed her and clipped her toenails since they were curling under.

Yup, I started fostering dogs and cats about 5 years ago I think. Been a pretty steady stream of fosters over the years, although this year has been lighter. I usually do bottle babies or sick, elderly dogs so when I get a semi-healthy young dog, it is much less stressful!

Now I'm also considering the names Twinkie and Twinkle. Hmmmm.....

Aww, Twinkie's cute, but I don't think it really fits her, to be honest... She just not short or long enough ;) I agree with most everyone else... I like Piglet! She looks like a Piglet! :D She is ADORABLE! hehehe!

Another vote for Piglet here too!
I'm so happy that you are taking her in and giving her the love she deserves. She's probably never going to want to let you go since she's so clingy. She must really be bonding to you. I think you are hers now. :)
Little girl is doing really good as far as her confidence goes. She's carrying her tail high already, as opposed to tucked as far between her legs as possible like on the first day. She prances around with me outside and stands on her hind legs whenever she sees someone. She looks like a little prairie dog. She probably spends more time on 2 legs than 4. I have to walk very slowly with her because she jumps on my legs every few steps wanting me to pick her up. She also likes to walk between my legs and I've tripped more than a few times.
We've got a lot of work to do on potty training. It is getting a little tiring. I think she may have a UTI though, so that might be part of the problem.
Her eyes are so full of love and don't look so scared anymore. She's already getting better with the cats and dogs. She loves to take naps with me and she sleeps under the blanket. She really needs a home where she can be a spoiled princess. She LOVES blankets, pillows, and anything soft.
I'm considering the name Delilah now too, but might just decide on Piglet.

I am glad to hear that she is doing so well :). How old do you think she is? So she is learning to get along with Reece and Lolly, huh? Sure she is, she wants to stay there :D.

I looked at her teeth and she seemed quite young. Probaby just around a year old. I'm going to ask the vet at work and see if he agrees.
My little girlie might have a home lined up already! Someone at my boyfriend's work is very interested. He already has a Corgi mix who he brings to work almost every day. He'd bring her too and I'd still get to see her sometimes :) I'll let you all know how it turns out. I'm going to get her spayed, healthy, and potty trained first probably.

She is such a doll baby, Aly! Such a delicate little thing with such a DARLING FACE! :D
How exciting that you may already have a home for her! Now all that's needed is a little Aly TLC to restore her confidence and health. ;)
As for names... she needs a CUTE ONE! That's all I know. ;)

Aly,
Once again truly amazing!!
The little girl has been at work with my boyfriend all morning meeting his co-worker (her potential new daddy). He really likes her and I'm pretty sure it will work out. When he's finished moving his stuff into his new house, he wants to take her for a weekend to make sure. I'm going to talk to him about adjustment periods though and that it will probably take longer than a weekend. He likes the name Pearl so I'm going to start calling her that so she'll be used to it. His other dog, Frankie, is a Chihuahua/Beagle mix. They are almost exactly the same size.
Potty training has been going very well for the past day. The little girl makes such huge strides so quickly. She also got heartworm tested yesterday, and was negative!! I'll try to get some new pics tonight.
