We live near some man-made lakes and for probably the last 5 years now I've had these 2 ducks, Fred & Ethel come by my house for food. They are adorable and while they do go south for the winter, they still return every spring. They actually come right up to either the front or back door, quack and wait for me to bring them out food and water. The cats just love them too!! :D

My problem, Ethel is not using her right leg. She can still fly, but she cannot walk on it. If she does, she plops down and will not walk. I put the food and water right in front of her so she doesn't have to move. She will eat out of a cup in my hand, so she does trust me......to a point. I don't know who to take her to or what can be done, but does anyone have any knowledge of ducks??!!

If I call the AZ department of Fish & Game I'm afraid they may put her down, I and do NOT want that to happen. Bothe Fred and I would be crushed!

Can anyone help??????

A family friend of ours has well over 50 ducks- so I talked to him about it. The leg is obviously broken, how it was broken is a mystery- it could have been born that way or it could have been hurt while trying to get away from a predator, got it stuck, etc. Most wild animals like ducks will adapt to the disablity and live out their lives like a normal animal of their kind. There are some vet offices and wildlife rehabilitators that could try to fix/repair the leg. My dad and I found an injured Mallard hen with a broken wing and leg, our local animal shelter is also a major wildlife rehabilitator- we took her their, they fixed her up, and set her free.
