Hi, just wondering if anyone has advice to share...my 3 yr. old chocolate lab has some sort of eye infection that has been hanging around for over a week now. We have brought her to the vet twice already, and she was prescribed a topical steroid/bacitracin ointment, and given a lovely lampshade to wear 24/7. We have been giving her the ointment religiously, but her poor eyes still look soooo irritated, bloody red, swollen and weepy. We were told to give it until wednesday, but it is breaking my heart to see her like this! Do you think benedryl or some other antihistimine would help her? She has had eye infections in the past that have gone away within a day or two of using the ointment, but has never been this bad before.

I'm sorry, but i have had no experience with this problem in
my dogs. I would suggest if your dog seems any worse (swelling
or shows a lot of distress with it), call your Vet again & see if
there is anything else that would help. Express your concerns
to the Vet. I hope your baby feels better soon.

My dog has the same thing. I've put ointment in it over the years and it still oozes. I simply wipe it off with a cleanex about once a day. Kind of gross but if I don't it bothers him
You may try some benedryl or there could be something in the eye itself. Maybe some dirt in the eyelid?
However, my Vet informed me that some eye conditions do not clear up with medications. My dog Dirtnap's eye is that way. It does not respond to medications.
I suggest wiping the eye clean with a clean cloth once and awhile and look for debris.
