View Full Version : Nebo isn't feeling too great again

Once again Nebo has a case of diarrhea. I stayed up late last night and ended up letting him out at least 4 times to go out in the middle of the night. This morning he woke me up throwing up on my floor (only a little bit). He's really moping around, won't play or anything just wants to sleep. He wouldn't eat any dog food for the past couple of days (ate treats). I may have given him too many treats when Cisco was over. It's the same scenario that happened not that long ago...he'll go about 2 days without eating much, get diarrhea and throw up some, then get over it within a few days. I have taken him to the vet twice (once last year, and a month or two ago) for this exact problem and they have never found anything wrong with him. They even did a complete blood panel. They treated him for worms just in case. I may switch dog food, don't know if that's the cause (he's had problems with this since he was a pup, on different kinds of food...I've never tried a kind specific to allergies/etc though) but it's worth a try...this is what he's on http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/products/UltDog.html this is what I was going to try http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/products/VenDog.html I'm thinking he may have something along the lines of irritable bowel sydrome.

Anyway, I was wondering what the best thing to do to help dogs feel better with an upset stomach? I've given him some stuff I bought at Petco before (pet pectilin? something like that) and I don't think it really did much. Can you give dogs pepto-bismal?

Amy, I copied this from a post from Phred a while ago - may even have been one of the replies from when Nebo was sick before - anyway, here it is ... (Phred, hope you don't mind?)

Doses vary widely from pet to pet, however, so be sure to
ask your vet for advice.

1. Pepto-Bismol can be given.
Give one teaspoon per 20 pounds of weight
every four to six hours.

2. Kaopectate is helpful for digestive troubles.
Give one teaspoon of Kaopectate for each ten pounds of weight, every four hours.

3. Di Gel Liquid can be given up to 4 tbs. every 8 hours.

4. Maalox can be given up to 4 tbs. every 8 hours.

5. Antacid liquids for humans containing aluminum and/or
magnesium hydroxide may help soothe the irritated stomach lining;

However: the most important part of treatment is Fasting!

Dose aluminum hydroxide antacids to provide
10mg pe pound of body weight every 6 hours.

If vomiting is present with diarrhea,
drugs containing bismuth subsalicylate are best.

**Do NOT give preparations containing aspirin
when your pet has upset stomach!**
------------------------------------------------

Doc Mike's "Rule of Thumb" is if someone
Tosses Their Cookies after a regular meal...

1) NO MORE "food" for about 12 hours!
(A biskit or two and WATER permitted - SMALL amounts of water,
offered often.)

2) If no vomiting after 12 hours - try 1/2 of a "regular meal"...

3) If THAT 1/2 meal comes up ...

4) Start the Pepto-Bismol for 12 hours (with water, NO food).

5) NEXT "meal" is a White Rice + SUPER-WELL cooked Lean Hamburger mix -
maybe a half cup every 12 hours.

6) Stays down? Continue Rice + Hamburger for 24 hours;
then return to regular krunchies.

7) Rice & Burger comes *UP*?? CALL da Vet!

We never got past Step 6.

He *ALWAYS* sez:
Bring in a "FRESH" sample of poop AND/or what comes out the "front end" -
He likes to *look* at the "evidence"!

He stresses: Everything in "moderation" -
easy on both food and water -
NO *gulping* - HAND feed if required.

*******************************************

Hope Nebo is feeling better soon, {{Hugs}} to you both.
Chris

Amy, it's very hard to detect in dogs (and people) so even if you've had a fecal done on him in the last few months that was clear, you may consider treating him for giardia. I don't know if you remember, but Chester had several bouts of diarrhea and was treated for it. Since then we haven't had a single case of it around here. We didn't know if the girls had it or not, but our vet said the medication wouldn't hurt them if they didn't have it, so we dosed them at the same time as Chester.

It's not an expensive medication at all. It's called metronidazole.

I hope poor Nebo feels better soon!

We use give our dogs pepto, and it helps a lot. Christy's Destiny has been getting sick from gulping too much water too fast, and Pepcid AC, has been helping her...

CIncy used to go through bouts like Nebo does...more vomitting then the other end, but sometimes both. She would get sick several times, and then be fine for 6-8 weeks. Then she got a bladder infection, and the vet felt the California Nautral food was too rich for her. We changed her to Sceince Diet Lite...she has not vomited, or had abladder infection since, and she has lost 7 lbs! Maybe a different food would sit better with him.

Hey Neboo ~
QUIT Dat!! ~ Get yourself Feelin Better - QUICK!

Amy ~

You might try the Rice & Burger for a few days rather than a New Food -
the R&B is very *soft* and won't irratate a tender tummy.
Plus it <smells good> - especially if "served" with a little
warm water poured over it (makes gravey)! ;)

Amy, don't you have large fish? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else, but this is the same medicine given to Oscars and other fish for hole in the head. It's dirt cheap and you can get it from your vet or through a good fish supply store.

Good luck with Nebo. :) I hope he's feeling better soon.

OOH! I feel sorry for him! Our dog sadie did that once.(She is an outside dog) I dont know how to solve it but here are two reasons:
#1.Sometimes bad dog shampoo gives them allergic reactions.
#2. There is types of dog foods that do that too.

Once again, Im sorry to hear that your dog is sick.:(

When Buddy gets the poos or when his belly makes funny noises (belly ache) I give him Pepto Tablets. They make chewable (does not work well at all with dogs!) The best are the caplets, just open the hatch and throw them down!!!
Buddy normaly feels better VERY fast!

Or I'll do beef and rice
