Ok,i need some advice on Kodie. He's been doing the most embarrising thing for me.i hate it and want it to stop! When we go for walks,he'll bark at other dogs when theyre walking by.This only happens when he doesnt get to say "Hi" to them. Its really bad when the dogs are running by:eek:  Its really embarrising, and i think it scares the crap out of people.A big dog, with a big deep bark, barking and lunging at them:mad: :o He doesnt mean anything, just like i want to play, stuff like that. When dogs are coming by,i hold him close to me,i tell him "no",sometimes he responds to "no",but most the time he doesnt. It seems to mostly happen with dogs that are smaller than him.
I'm currently walking him with a Prong collar, which he does wonderfully with, but doesnt help with his problem.I suggested to my parents that we get him another Halti(his other one got chewed by a little black puppy named Lucy).Do you think that would help?I would be able to hold him closer to me,and he wont be able to bark.Or would you suggest something else?

-edit-
He started this when we got Lucy, could it be he's protective of her?She is his little girl;)

It's not a matter of the collar working or not. He needs to learn that it is okay for other dogs to walk by when you guys are out and about! A Halti might prevent his barking, but wht you want is to prevent him from WANTING to bark. See the difference? You need to modify his behavior.

When you see another dog approaching, perhaps you need to make him sit, and keep him focussed on you. Run him through "sit," "give paw" or whatever other commands he knows. Let him know that you are in charge, he doesn't need to protect you. When the other dog has passed successfully, without him reacting, reward him (lavish praise or small treat). Whatever technique you try, you need to be absolutely consistent, okay?

I did with Tango exactly the same thing as Karen just said. It worked really well:) Good luck!

Welcome to my world! Even obedience classes haven't helped. We do use the halti, it's the only thing that helps a bit. She goes insane when she sees another dog, and we've tried the sit, treat, or walking fast past the dog, or walking in the other direction...... I'll be taking her back to obedience regularly (they let you come back free as often as you need). And Mika is STRONG--she's pulled me over before! She loves to socialise with dogs at the park, as long as it's off a leash!

Kodie loves to socialize with other dogs,He's not aggressive or anything. He's just Mr. friendly guy and just HAS to say hi to everyone:rolleyes: He doesnt realize that he cant say hi to every single dog.

He has actually been good today and yesterday.Yesterday a couple was walking a boxer and he was going to do it but i told him "no" and gave him a tug on his collar. He didnt even try to bark.I told him good boy after:)

Sounds like my Smokey!!! At first we thought he was very dog aggressive, but when he started playing with two GS's and a mini pincher, we had to rethink... figured he was barking cuz he either wanted to play or thought that the area around us is "Smokey's Area"... but he was also real good today with a female rotty 1 1/2 times his size...

but I've been on walks too, and he went totally spazoid on two dogs walking towards us... wish I could have told the guy he just wants to play!!... he was fine with a huge husky till the husky started barking (not at smokey, the husky was already out of eyeshot)...

I've tried distracting him, or making him sit, hell i've even gone and said quiet while closing his mouth shut... nothin works!
