View Full Version : Prayers for Nebo please

I took Nebo in to work with me today and gave him a bath, so I was with him all day. I came home and was taking some pictures of him when I noticed that one of his pupils in his eye was bigger than the other. I called the vet and they said to get him in right away so I rushed him there. In the car his eyes seemed to get even worse, one was extremely small compared to the other...as small as it would get in bright, direct sunlight, not the light inside a car in the evening.
I weighed him at the vet and he's lost 8 lbs since March 19 when he was last weighed...he's 51 lbs now and he was 59 lbs. I don't think that is related to this though it's because he wouldn't eat much dog food (ate lots of treats) while we were gone, he never will eat dog food away from home he does it every time...but that is still a significant weight loss. He had been eating at home just fine, he ate all his food last night and he's eating some right now.
Anyway, then the vet examined him. It was the eye that had the smaller pupil that was the problem, the other was dilating ok...that one was dilating much slower (he turned off the lights and put a flashlight to his eyes). He said it could either be the actual eye doing it or a neurological problem. He did a test to see if it was the actual eye (called it UV-itis I think?) causing it but the test showed it wasn't.
So that left it with it being a neurological problem...and apparently there are lots of different possibilities. He said it could be related to his tail being hurt (his tail seems much better now, he was almost holding it up all the way today)...like his back being injured and sending a nerve signal causing the eye to react that way. He had a name for the disorder but I can't remember it. It could also be caused by some sort of insect bite...something carried by fleas and ticks....that I guess they have in the florida area but not here that can cause neurological damage. I think he said some other possibilities too but I was too upset to really take it all in after what he said last. He said that it's possible there could be a brain tumor causing it but he said it was not likely considering his age (almost 3) and no other symptoms...but just saying that about gave me a heart attack.
He took a blood sample that would test the insect thing but I won't know until Monday. He gave me some prednisone to give him (very small dose) for now.
Now his pupils look fine, they are both the same size.....but the one that had the smaller pupil is now swollen in the corner. And ever since we got home I noticed he's been scratching at his nose. I'm wondering if he could have been stung or bitten by an insect (spider?) here? I don't know if that could cause the pupil thing, but I think that can affect the nerves which could affect the eye.....
I don't know, I just know I'm really upset and worried about him. He's my baby, I just don't know what I would do if something happened to him. I would really appreciate some prayers for him, I really hope it is not something serious. Thank you.

Picture of Nebo's eyes when one pupil was smaller than the other (took the photo before I noticed the problem)
They looked a lot worse in the car and in the vet than in this pic

The swelling of the inside corner almost certainly indicates some sort of reaction. I’d be willing to bet he was either stung/bitten by an insect or something blew into his eye that caused the pupil to constrict. It could’ve been most anything at your work, Amy. Even a reaction to a different (or even the usual) shampoo, flea dip, perfume, etc.
I know you’re worried sick, Lord knows I would be too, but try to stay calm and keep him calm. I would imagine the prednisone should remedy the swelling by tomorrow and hopefully he’ll be just fine.

Oh Amy, I don't even know what to say. I can imagine how upset you were and still are about all of this. I'm just hoping it's nothing and he will be doing better soon.
The swolen eye you showed, Roxey's has been like that before. I'll have to see if I can find a picture of it. It scared me too but after a couple of days it went away and I hope Nebo's does too.
You know I'll be praying and keeping Nebo in my thoughts until you find something out on Monday. If you need or want to call me pm me and I'll give you my # or if you even want to talk on msn let me know.
{{{HUGS}}} to both you and Nebo.
Love Anna
Ok, I found the picture. It's not exactly swolen in the same place but it looks very similar. Hopefully it's like Roxey's was and will go away in a couple of days too.

Poor Nebo. I hope he gets better soon. I can see the difference in the pupils. That's very odd. I've never seen anything like that before, though of course I've heard of it and know about it. I've just never seen it up close like this. Keep us updated and prayers coming your way Nebo! :)

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and prayers. The swelling doesn't have me as concerned as the pupils...the vet seemed really concerned when he looked at him...he really didn't know for sure what caused it just said a bunch of different possibilities...some possibilities being very serious and some not serious. I just hope it's not a neurological problem, I hope it's just an insect bite. He was stung by a bee once and his whole face was swollen up, he's really sensitive to things.

Oh poor Nebo! :( Prayers are on the way! I hope he feels better soon! Tigger had something like that, but it was like a little bumpy bubble or abcess of skin or something growing inside of her eye and the vet told us not to worry about it.

I hope Nebo is doing OK. Poor pup. Is he acting the same? So glad you got him to the vet asap, what a wonderful mom you are! Duncan had dilated pupils once. He got out of the house when I wasn't home and when I got home, both his pupils were extremely dilated. (The vet said he was literally blind for days because of it!) They never were sure what it was that caused it but their speculation was that he got into something toxic. I think their first suspect was marijuana because his symptoms were so familiar to that type of poisoning in a dog and that type of "medication" in a human.
Not to say that Nebo was exposed to that in any way....just similar symptoms!
I hope he is doing better today. Keep us updated please!

Ohh, Amy, big hugs for you. I know how much that boy means to you. I'm sitting here trying to think of some great words to help comfort you. You know I love that boy too. I'm so glad that you were observant and caught this and took him to the vet. Nebo is in my thoughts and I will be saying my prayers for him. Gosh, for some reason I feel completely tongue tied. I know how worried you are and I care so much about you and Nebo that I just can't find the words to express myself. You know I'm hear and you can talk to me anytime.

That's so weird, especially since he acted completely fine here, the whole time?
It worries me a lot especially since it's a possibility it could have happened here, which could mean my dogs could get whatever it is, and if not there's still the fact poor Bebo is hurt.
I just went and looked back at the last few pictures I took of him, his eyes look completely normal there.
There's a few things that make me wonder of how it could happen here.
Was it sand in his eye, salt water? Being bit by one of the other dogs, getting into whatever he got into at the beach?
Who knows! :(
Thank gosh Pet Talk is finally back up because I was going CRAZY last night wondering what was going on after seeing the link in your LJ.

Wolf Q I live in florida. I am writing this to HOPEFULLY put some of your fears to rest. We have had our cairn terrier to the vet twice in the past 2 months. It seems there is something in the air here in florida that is giving usually normal healthy dogs allergies. Boogies has had a very serious skin infection and the vet said he is not the only one to come in recently. Hopefully if you have been to florida it is just an allergic reaction to what we do not know. But it seems to be common here recently. My other dog Elvis who is a large dog (1/2 rottweiler, 1/2 boxer) has NO symptoms what-so-ever. So whatever is going over is completely random. Hope I have eased your mind a little. Our babies are our love.

That's really, really, strange.
Wolf_Q came to visit us in Florida - I have 3 dogs, not one of them has any sort of allergies. None of the dogs I know of who live in Florida have any sort of allergies!
Where in Florida do you live?

Poor Nebo!! I really want to believe that with the swelling that is an indication that a bug bite, or dust particle or something is causing the problems. To me (and I try to be optimistic!) the sweeling may be a good thing, but it seems to say there is an outside cause.
We'll be keeping Nebo in our prayers. Hope he feels better soon!!

Yes, Florida has a lot of fleas and ticks, but I've never heard of anything happening like that as a result. I don't think I've ever seen a flea on any of my animals, but ticks are a whole other story. Ticks are sooo bad here, I keep my dogs on Frontline and still find ticks.
Anyway, I hope Nebo is better soon.

Bitsy (my pom) is having a hard time with allergies right now too, but my other 4 are fine. It's weird because during the day she's not too bad, but at night she is really itchy. She has pills that help take off the edge, but that's about all they do. I've also been bathing her in an oatmeal & tea tree oil shampoo, which helps.

Nebo says thanks for all the well wishes. By Saturday morning his eye was completely fine.....no swelling, pupils fine...still fine today. His tail is up all the way now too and doesn't seem to be bothering him.
He did poop in my room this morning but I don't think it was related to this, I just think he really had to go and he doesn't seem to know how to wake me up.
I'll know the blood test results on Monday.
I'm really thinking that a spider bit him near the eye and possibly paralyzed the nerves of the eye temporarily...swelling came afterward. Maybe that is a completely crazy idea but it's the best explanation I can come up with for now.

The test results were perfectly normal. The vet also said the spider bite theory was not possible so basically I'm left with absolutely no explanation. He said the swelling in his eye was probably from the stuff they put in his eyes to test them...doesn't all add up to me though as they put it in both eyes and only the one was swollen.
I just hope it doesn't happen again and this is the end of it.
