Oh gosh! I've never had a male dog, so I'm not sure if that is normal! The size of a baseball??? But as nurse I can tell you it tells me something might be wrong. I'd call them back and ask them to check him over, just to be sure!!! Is he acting as though in pain? Is he peeing ok? Please let us know how your boy's doing! Sandra

It doesn't sound normal to me. It sounds painful. How is your
dog doing now? I would have them do a re-check on him, if it
looks red or infected. Good luck to the little guy.:)

the size of a baseball? that sounds horrible! When we neutered our boy, it wasn't swollen at all and only had a few drops of blood the first night. They said if it swells or bleeds to bring him in. . . I would call them back, or even call another vet to see what they think.

Definately call another vet if yours still gives you a hard time. Some swelling is expected, but not that much.

I worked at a vets office & I've never seen a dog like that. Out of the thousands I have seen the sacs are all saggy & empty.
I'd call your vet back or even another vet.
I wish you & your cutie the best!

It sounds like your current Vet is either in a state of denial about doing a poor surgery, or is totally incompetent.

My little Barney had what one would expect - a slight swelling along the incision. If the stitches are not close enough together sometimes there is a little seepage.

What you are describing is a major blood vessel that wasn't tied correctly, resulting in a massive amount of blood filling and distending the empty sac.

A second Vet may choose to reopen the incision take out the now massive blood clot, check the internal ties, and then sew up again. It's possible for the blood to be reabsorbed internally, but that really presents an optimal environment for an infection to occur.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I called the vet yesterday I was told to expect that much swelling because of his age,he just turned 2, they did finally agree to see him today. I will keep you all posted on what they tell me. Thanks again guys. She:)

I'm glad you're getting him in to be looked at.
But that whole "expect it to be swollen because of his age" is just a bunch of bologna. Age has nothing to do with it at all.

Keep us posted on the outcome!

Sounds like BS to me too. I had a 7 year old Dalmatian neutered and his sack never swelled that much if at all.

We had our RB rottie Angus neutured at 10 and he never swelled up one bit.
If it were me I would definately be seeing another vet.
Good Luck today, please let us know how it goes.

OMG, that sounds horrible, poor doggy.

When i got my male done, he did have slight swelling (he got his lampshade head thing off when i was at work), but nothing even close to the size of a baseball! I just adopted another male about a month ago, and not looking forward to getting him snipped.

I hope you little one feels better soon.
