In Speech Class, We are going to have to deliver a 5-6 minutes speech on anything we like. I chose to talk about Rats, and how they can be pets. Basic Care, how big they get, and pretty much the basics of rats.
We have to have a visual aid. I have decided to bring Stewart and Oreo with me to be my visual aid. I am going to show them how they know their name. Also, I am going to make a poster with rat pictures that shows how big they can get, other pictures, and a few facts on it.
Does anyone know of a good visual aid that I could do? Or does this sound okay?
Also, I have to have a attention getter first line..
I have thought about this one, but I think its kinda plain.
When many people think about owning a pet, they generally think of dogs and cats. What I am here to show you today is that a rat can be just as good as a pet as any other.
Is that a bad introductory attention getter? I don't think its capturing the attention of the audience for some reason.
Thank You for any kind of advice/feedback
For an attention getter, maybe you can ask them a question ... something like "How many of you have ever had a pet rat?", "How many of you are scared of rats?", etc etc. Have them raise their hands. If not many people have had them, you can point out that they aren't scary little creatures, but loving pets.

This is how its going to start...
How many of you are afraid of rats?
When you think about pets what do you think about?
Most people think about dogs or cats, but today I'm here to talk to you about pet rats.
Sound okay?

Thank You Aly! I liked that advice.
You're welcome :) Sounds great. I'm sure you'll do a good job on that but I'll say good luck anyway :)

Trust me I will need it. I am so shy getting in front of people during a speech. Thank you again..
You know, not to get off the subject but I noticed your birthday was a day after mine lol!
Anybody with any other suggestions feel free to post them.

Cool, another Scorpio :)
Don't be nervous. I've found that when I speak about things that I'm passionate about, there is no reason to get nervous. I love to tell people about animals and when they can tell I'm so passionate, they tend to listen with interest. Also, practicing it over and over so you're confident with what you're saying and you don't have to read word for word off a page really helps. I generally take note cards for speeches cause teachers always hate it when people just stand up there and read.

Congrats on your speech topic. It's always nice to see people spreading the good word on rats as pets. :)
Does Stewart or Oreo have any experience with other people? Or traveling? Or noise? How do they react? I ask such things because I personally don't think it'd be a good idea to bring your rats anywhere, unless it was needed - ie, the vet. Rats are very suseptable to the slightest illnesses that we, as humans, don't even think about. I don't think you want Stewart or Oreo getting sick because you brought them to a speech. :( Also, when a rat is brought into a new situation, nervousness can set in, leading to illness. Think about when Stewart or Oreo first came home - they weren't automatically wanting to jump out of the cage, run around, and crawl on you, were they? It takes them a while to get used to the new surroundings. If you don't have to have them in a new surrounding, I'd advise you not to then.
For a visual aid? How about making a stuffed rat? :p Seriously, though. You could have visual presentation - on a board, or powerpoint, or something similar - that shows pictures, interesting facts, etc.
I think your introduction sounds great. However, I'd leave out "but today I'm here to talk to you about pet rats" because it's almost stating the obvious. In the introduction of the speech, you want things to start to unfold, but also keep some things hidden for later in the speech! Just a tip, though. You don't have to listen to me. :) But personally, if I was listening to a speech with that very first line, and then 3 sentences later them telling me they're going to tell me why they're giving me this speech in such an obvious way, I'd go to sleep.

I did that exact same kind of speech last year. Too keep everyones else off of me, I brought all 7 of my rats to school (only for that period)and they watched the rats while I gave the speech. My ratties LOVE people and almost died from all the attention they got afterwards- Fred was licking EVERYONES fingers- it was too cute. I got an A! Hehe! It was A LOT of fun!
Sounds like your speech is off to a good start!

Thanks for the luck everyone. I need it. I'm already nervous and this speech isn't due till like April 14th. lol!
Yes, My rats are very used to going places. They go to my dad's work place all the time where people handle them and stuff. so they are used to it.
Yeah, my rats will only be there for about 2 and a half hours since thats all that I go on that day. Congrats on making an A on that speech. I hope I do the same lol
Hey Buckner, I like the powerpoint idea, but we don't have a computer in that classroom since its an auditorium type room. I am just going to make a poster with pictures and facts on it, and then bring Stewart and Oreo. I think that will be enough.
hmm.. anyone know of any good snacks/foods I could bring that could represent rats? lol..
I got another question. Do you mind If I use your rat pictures for my poster? (That question goes to everyone lol)
Thanks again for the luck. I will tell everyone how it goes.

Yay! Good speech topic! :)
I am doing a speech too, lol, since everybody else is getting advice, I'm doing mine on pet abuse! :(
This is how mine goes:
Imagine yourself, standing in a shelter full of countles animals with mange and parasites, eating away at their skin and fur! Don't you feel sorry for them? Don''t you ever wonder what happened to them before this life? ...
I make them kind of feel guilty and get them to visualize it! I'm not saying change it, but this is just how I would start it!
What comes to your mind when you think of a rat? Long disgusting tail, beady eyes, ugly teeth? Well, not to me! They have so many features that people don't think about...
:D I don't have visuals and this is for public speaking...:p
