I'm sure many of us re-named their kitties after adoption! :)

Well, at least I did!

As long as Luna lived with her first family, her name was Picachu (sp? - the Pokemon, you know? LOL). The kids named her like that, but I thought that "Luna" was a better choice! ;)

And Lily was first named Paula when she was born, but as soon as I decided to adopt her from my friends, I told them she's going to be a "Lily". From that day on, they changed her name.

Can you imagine my girls being called Paula and Picachu? LOL :D

My cat Bugs, was Lena when i adopted her, then we called her Tortie, but as she has grown up she has now become Bugs. Bugs is actually short for another word, that it would probably not let me type on here. We called her that because she is a little b****r!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thumper was called Erie at PetSmart, Thumper didnt really respond to Erie.

Eleanor was called Eleanor and it suited her and us. She knows her name. Past medical records from her previous owner showed Eleanor.

Skinny was "no name stray" we started calling him Skinny and he responded. ;)

Filou was called Solo - but I know he would be a Filou when I saw him;)
Tigris was called Blacky- a much too trivial name for a majestic boy like him.

Allen was Squeekers, as in "Squeeks to much" My boys was always quite loud and talkative! :D I thought Squeekers was cute, but once he grew ito a fat adult cat it wouldn't fit him.. and boy was I right!

Pouncer was tentatively Snickers (yeah yeah Jen I know you were just humoring Charlie!) Pouncer fits him purrfectly.

Harry is Harry because he was found outside Harold's house. Harry fits him, but I often find myself calling him Harold when he's being nosey. Don't know why! :D

Abby was Evie. It didn't "fit" her. Hubby thought I was calling her Abby, so he renamed her with his misunderstanding.

Abigail was Alice. Sometimes now I call her Mary Alice Abigail. I should have named her Cyd Charisse because she has long, slender dancer's legs.

Duffy was Larry - as in Larry, Curly and Moe.

Grady was Smokey - but those people at the house where he lived never called him by his name. We ''poofed'' him when he was 5 months old, and he learned Grady within a week.

Red - we don't have a clue. He was a stray without portfolio when he happened into our yard.

Reese was always Reese - from the moment I saw her in the box in front of the grocery store.

Mitzi had many names before I adopted her. She had been known as Grace, Princess Grace and when I adopted her Animal Savers had been calling her Sweet Pea.

When she came home with me, one of the first things she did was to give me a kitty high-five with her big white mitts. ... that did it for me ... and she's been known as Mitzi ever since.

Mishi was Mishigaas, which is still his official name; we just call him Mishi for short because it's a favorite word in our family - it means fluffy, soft, furry ..... something you want to pet forever.

Ripley didn't have a name when I got him at 7 weeks old.

Jazz was called Chrissy because she was left in a box with her mom and two siblings so they called the kittens Jack, Janet and Chrissy from the tv show Three's Company.

Scout was called Goldie at the shelter.

Rocky was named by Kimlovescats.

Rumor was named Ashley by Kim but we wanted to have two R names for the kittens.

I HATE changing names. I know some people who think they have to change their cat or dog or horse's name as a right of becoming theirs, but unless a name really bothers me, than I won't change it. We tryed to keep Layla's name as close to Lady as we could. We couldn't keep the name Lady because my mom had a RB dog named Lady. Clark was just called "Little Man" he didn't come from the best situation. Nino's name was Nino

Sushi's was Sushi - we liked it so we kept it. But Kirin's was Doogie. We changed it to "match" Sushi in his Japanese-ish-ness. Kirin is a brand of Japanese beer (and it is also the Japanese word for 'giraffe').

I gave them all their names. I havent changed them, but have modified them from time to time.

Tinkerbelle - Tink, Stinky, Stinkybelle.

Kewpie - Q-baby, Kewpiedoll, Yitty.

Spike - Dude, Dudey boy.

Rocky - Dicky.

The seem to know who I am talking to even with the funky variations.

Mine were both nameless, but were both tiny kittens when we adopted them.

Took a day to decide on Josie's name . . . but we already had Brodie's name picked out before we went & found him! It fit him perfectly though! :)

I adopted Eepie when she was five weeks old. My husband suggested that I name her Angel so we called her that for about three days. When she would meow, her voice was so high-pitched it sounded like 'Eep! Eep!' so I started saying 'You're a little eepie thing, aren't you?' Soon both of us were calling her Eepie.

Grey Girl's name was Ashes. I adopted her when she was about a year old. Her coat is the color of ashes which is where she got her name from. She loves to talk to me while I take a bath so I'd say things like, "I love my grey girl. What a pretty grey girl." That's how Grey Girl got her name!

ROFLOL!!! We have come to know so many of these kitties and then to see what their names used to be is so funny! The "old" names don't fit most of them at all!

Sammy's name got changed from Sally for obvious reasons!;) :p

Mr. Magoo was Ocular

Everybody else was a nameless little stray before me so I'm to blame for who they are now.:D

I always have to wait after I get a cat to name it; it usually takes me 3-4 weeks to pick a name that fits.

I got Bo at six weeks. He was a little troublemaker (but he is so good now), so at first I called him "Little Bad".

So Little Bad became Bo

Abby was named "Sparky" by her previous owner. I didn't care for that name. I actually re-named her Abby within a week, so no other transitional names took.

Hanna was a 8-9 week-old stray, so if she did by any remote chance have another name I was not aware of it. I played with the name Lily, and a few others, but in the end the name Hanna stuck.

So now I have Bo, Abby and Hanna. I call them my Amish cat family because of their names.

We only renamed one of ours. Bailey was the name we gave our little Bailey, since we raised him from kittenhood. Leila came with that name, and we liked it, so we kept it. Leo was originally called "Red Baron" and we thought Leo was more fitting (like Leo the Lion, etc.) and cute. Claudia came with that name, and it just seemed to work well for her, like Leila's name did, so we left it at that. :)

Interesting thread.

Saphirah was "Alexander." She was named by the children in the household where she was born, and they knew she was female.

Inka was found and unnamed

We named Lizzie and Robbie soon after they were born. They are really Elizabeth and Robert but only when they are Naw-Tee.

Dylan was "Dyllan" so we just dropped an "l" so he would be Dylan Thomas and stay with our poet theme.

Emily and Eliot were Lucy and Louie:D

Mango was named "red band" by his breeder because he wore a red collar. They started calling him Mango once we picked the name and then a month later he was old enough to come to his new home. The breeder avoides naming the kittens because, once named by them, they end up keeping them! There is at least a dozen cats from 18 years old to just kittens that are a permanent part of their household. I'd have a hard time parting with them too..

We've only been 'cat people' for a little over two months - since Pixel wandered into our garage - but Pixel has had three names...

Since we first saw him on Christmas Eve, framed by the headlights of the car when coming home from Candlelight service, I started refering to him as 'Christmas Kitty'. We left him food, water and a bed in the garage, but he was real skittish.

Then it got bitterly cold, and we invited him in. I kinda figured that once the cold spell broke, he'd want to leave - so we didn't worry about giving him a real name. The snow ans cold went away, but he stayed - so of course, we had to call him something - 'Christmas Kitty' was too much of a mouthful.

unintentionally, all my dogs have had names starting with 'T'. So we thought a 'T' name would be appropriate. Since the kitty was very quiet, kind of serious and not 'playful' - we named him 'Teal'c after a character in Stargate SG1 (We're sci-fi fans)

But that didn't last long, either. Once he really relaxed with us, his playful and affectionate side came out, and the image of the very controlled "Teal'c" just didn't fit! ( and he didn't respond to it, anyway!)

Plus, we had adopted another dog, whose name is 'Fizz' and we're not changing that - so there went the 'T' theme!

i was re- reading a favorite book, "The Cat Who Walks Thru Walls" by Robert Heinlein and I suggested "Pixel", the name of the cat in the book. Heinlein's Pixel is an orange kitty, too, but he has Blue eyes instead of our kitty's gold ones. Our Pixel also 'walks thru walls' - or at least, thru the doggy door! Which we think is pretty neat! 'Pixel' fits him much better, and he's starting to respond to it already.

Our Abby was originally "Jumper". We were going to keep it (even though I didn't love it, I thought it was okay) but after about a week after adopting her, hubby confessed every time he said her name he thought of "suicide jumper" .. why, I'm not sure, but it's not a pleasant thought so we changed it pronto!

zephyra (heartcat in avatar) was macy gray - from death row, I know nothing about music and promised it'll be the name for my first dream black cat. I grew up in zephyr-city!

ocean was raider - from a shelter, ew. rather than people think I'm a football/pirate fan, something to combine with breeze(zephyra) - we lived about a mile away from breezy ocean! (he could slurp the whole ocean & loves to play with water, fyi!)

miles was, well, he had two; danny boy - from a shelter, just right before we adopted him, he was microchipped twice by mistake and named him micro. micro's offical owner was my ex we adopted together, two years later he gave micro up to me finanically, changed micro to miles so we'd have a new life. :)

eclypse was eclipse - from rescue group, didn't like how "i" made the name look but loved the "name" because of her odd-eyes - 'eclipsing' together, bright green/blue so changed a bit without changing it too much!

clayton was creme puff - from rescue group, too plain, blanky for me, that's his colors!

shaddow was taco - a feral of a friend who moved out into "no pets" home, named by a five year old girl who loooves tacos! but when I come to visit my friend, we call her little gina because friend was teasing me how whinny I hated the name, taco. and this girl seems to visit at the same times I am there so she's always taco.

whispers since she was born.

midnight (known as peppers first here too) was suki - from a shelter, perky girl at home first came to thought, very peppy! ended up peppers until just last august, she had her oral surgery, part of her was removed - now changed to midnight so peppers no longer makes me sad. :( midnight sure suits her! all calm, snowy-colored mane around her neck as of a moonlight bleaming.

(lone) star was feathers - stray found off a raining street, I named her feathers because she had a lo-o-ong tail (1 and almost half feet tail). she went downhill a couple of times, and dying on one worst downhill after had her boys and survived like a shinning star! http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b127/mystichild/pinkgrin.gif

last, all of star's four boys - first and second names by me, an indecesive meowmie...still am! first name they had was for about a month.

gus was oakster - that is his middle name now.

chance was dante - that name was kept until he had a serve IBD (inflammation bowel disorder), barely lived or being a cat...he had another chance to live! :D

thunder was/or avalanche? - lol, still not sure about that one, I kept saying "hey my sweet avalanche"... but kept all of his pictures in thunder folder and addressed him aval-uh-thund to everyone. help!

echo was ashton - kept it until thought it sounded too 'hoomany', like to keep for my son. :p he echos love especially - (he would lick you 24 hours!) ..

okay, the end.

My one-time beloved Myrtille (French for blueberry) was "Cuddles" in the shelter, but she was such an infant, she didn't know. And our cat Indigo was "Oreo" in the shelter - I think she had come from someone's home, because she was so tame and well cared for, so I think Oreo was her given name. Beauty didn't have a name, nor did our now-departed Tzigane (who was fostered by Myrtille's mother - Myrtille was born in the shelter). My first cat Sadie came to me from my grandmother's as an infant, so I named her. Same with my family's first cat, Mustard. I named him. My sister named her first cat, Tribble. My parents got two kittens from a farm, and one was named Elizabeth Taylor because she had such a beautiful face, but my parents changed her name to Zane Grey. The other kitten was not named, to my knowledge, and they named her Majesty, but ended up calling her Magic. Oh, I am forgetting my very first kitten, when I was a little girl - at my grandmother's farm - his name was Minet, and his sister was named Calico. We named them. We got them from the neighbors. Calico was Mustard's mother, and Mustard had two brothers - Mittens and White Spot. There were other cats at my grandmother's, too - she was always having strays dropped off at her farm. There were Stray, Inky, Dinky, Dew, and others. I named Stray, but she named the other three. My son named our black cat Beauty on sight at the shelter, and it took a little thought over the space of a few days for me to settle on the name Indigo for our black and white cat. Thank you for the opportunity to stroll through my memory book of cats.

Cammie - called Roberta at the shelter we adopted her from but she was 10 years old, so she probably has had other names as well.
Pepper - called Sprite at the shelter.

Miss Boo Boo Kitty was called Tiger Lily by her previous owners.Ashley and Raven were both 4 yrs old when we adopted them, thought it would be best not to change their names. Norton was called Bandit at the shelter because he would steal from the staff's lunches! Tina Peepers was Christopher, then we found out " he " was a she! Riley, Molly, Spunky, Mickey Roo, Ralph Syracuse had no names, and Hayley was Autumn, then Star, the Hayley! Almost forgot, Nicholas remained Nicholas! And little Sylvia Purrogoli was named after the NPR Rome reporter, Sylvia Porgoli!

Zöe is her original name, I got here from a breeder as a 10 week old baby. Zöe is named for a friend and former coworker from Canada,
when I asked her is she minded my using her name for my beautiful new kitten she said she "would be honoured", so that has always been her name. Phoebe was originally named Morning Glory. That just didn't fit her. I changed her name to Phoebe, after Phoebe on the TV show, 'Friends' because she is always doing something goofy that makes me laugh...

Cardamom (RB) was called Miss Kitty by her previous owner. She was Miss Kitty to me for a couple of weeks, then I decided to call her something less "generic." Her dark stripes were the color of black cardamom pods.

Don Juan got his name at the Humane Society, where he was brought as a stray. I kept it because he is a big lovebug, and just a little bit naughty. ;)

Zerlina was Zana at Hopalong Animal Rescue. When I met her at the Petsmart adoption center, I scratched her ear and asked if she'd like to be called "Zerlina." She purred. :) She's named for a character in the Mozart-Da Ponte opera Don Giovanni. Zerlina is a peasant girl at her wedding when she encounters the charming Don Giovanni, who almost succeeds in persuading her to abandon her new husband and run off with him. (Fortunately, bridegroom Masetto turns up just in the nick of time.) And my Zerlina has just the same sweet-and-spicy temperament.

Cassie's shelter name was Heinbuch. No, really. She was named for Dr. Heinbuch, who is one of the veterinarians at the practice Harmony House works with. I named her Cashmere because she's the same color as the grey cashmere blend coat my mom was wearing when she found out I had adopted a cat. My other choice for her name was Pepper. I got Howard at a local pet rescue, and his name was "Howard" there too. I kept the name because, for some strange reason, it just suited him--even as a 12-week-old kitten. Although sometimes we call him "How-Cat" (for short) or even "How-Turd" (when he's being "bad").

Luna was always Luna as I got her from a friend's farm (I had the pick of several barn cat litters). Good thing too, because she's too much of a high-maintenance little princess to be an outdoor barn cat. Sometimes I think I should have named her "Paris" instead. lol.

GREAT idea for this thread, by the way. I've enjoyed all the posts :)

I have no idea what lexie and Ash were previously called, but my other two adopted furbabies were Duchess and Victoria, she named them after the royal family, pity she did not see fit to treat them as royalty, but that has all changed of course, now they are, but i did not want them to have any association with that horrible woman, so i changed them to Ellie-mae and Nikkita.

Scooter Bug was originally going to be named Fizgig - after a cartoon creature in (I think) the Dark Crystal. (I am not certain what movie, really - my ex-hubby loved it.) But, he would sit at the foot of the bed while I was laying there watching tv and he'd scoot up the bed, 1 inch at a time... and then bug the heck out of me. So he named himself - Scooter Bug!

Charlie was originally Calvin at the shelter. I tried calling him Calvin for 2 weeks. He was NOT a Calvin. He's been Charlie ever since. We say, "Sorry Charlie" a lot when we have to medicate him. Poor little guy.

My first cat as a semi adult (I was 17 when I got her) was Mytsi and she was the kitten of my grandmother's cat Patches. I choose her at just 2 weeks old and I named her then so her name was always Mytsi.

Lilith was always Lilith too as she was completely unsocialized. The guy that had the mother never touched the kittens except the day he brought them to the rescue.

Vixen was Lulu. Named by my mother's friend's daughter.

Phoenix was Lupona. Which means big wolf in english. The lady that was fostering her also had a Lupetta which is little wolf in english.

Bella was a stray and so I have no idea if she ever had a name before I named her.

The 4 babies I named.

And Vega I have no idea either cause she was abandoned.

I got Taz almost 12 years ago when he was only a few months old. And I can't remember the name his previous family had for him. :( I asked my sister, who brought him home to me, and she can't remember either. Oh well, he's been Taz (with a million nick names) for so long now.

Now Zoee (I know she's not a cat) was named Bonnee at the breeders. And we kept with the double E theme without even realizing it was the theme of the litter. :)

Hank was born on the 4th of July so him and his brothers were named Stars, Stripes and Yankee Hank was Stars.

Molly was named Shiffra pronounced Shif-raa.

Duckie was Kagmoe pronounced Ka-Gome-eh. It was the name of some Anime cartoon character.

And Ivy was name Cairo. After something in Egypt.

When we adopted Archy and Binky, their names were Watson (Archy) and Sherlock (Binky). We are both big fans of the McNally mystery series written by Lawrence Sanders.

Archy, our tuxie, is always well dressed and outgoing, so Archy McNally's name seemed perfect for him. Binky, as his sidekick, is laid-back just like the character he was named for.

My cats have all retained their original names but, of course, I call them something different now and then. Puddy is "Shnorkey" and "The Pudilator", Boo is "Boo Bear", Yoda is "Yodie Yodie" or "Yodifer", Pigeon is "Pidgie Pie", "Pidglet" or "Soot Foot", Creamsicle is "Cgirl" or "Agent Orange" when she's really bad, Coco Puff is "Bad Boy Blue Eyes", Specs is "Speckers" or "Speculator" and RB Peeka was "Peeka Pie" and "Adolph".
