I'm getting mine in 2 weeks! A black himmie Netherlad Dwarf, I don't know if it will be a buck or a doe, But the breeder says she'll get me whichever one she thinks is best for me. I am getting him/her for 4-h and might not be able to keep him/her after the fair.:( In that case the bunny would go to my coisin, but I really hope I can keep him/her! I am thinking about naming my bunny Oslo because I've always wanted to go there, and because it sounds cool as a name!;) What to you think about it?

I don't want to step on toes or anything, expessially since this should be a happy thread, but isn't that un-fare for the bunny? "He" will get so used to you and your house and then just be re-homed :( Bunnies are emotional just like dogs and cats.

BTW: We need more pics of that cute pup of yours!!

What about foster dogs and cats?
Besides, my mom hints: "We might just get too attatched." and my mom is good at persuading my dad when it comes to things like that.;)

There is a difference in-between foster dogs and what you want to do. You can't really compare Apples and Oranges but I will do my best.

The main reason is that people who foster animals of any kind do it because it is in the best interest of the animal. The animal is in need of a home and without a foster home who knows what might happen to it. However, you are taking on this rabbit for a few months, you have purchased it from a breeder and if you did not purchase it the rabbit might have a chance at a forever home. You are doing what is in the best intrest of you. I have no doubt this rabbit would be loved and well cared for, but if left with the breeder it could have a good chance of getting a forever home.
Example: It would be like adopting a pure-bred Sheltie, keeping it for a few months, showing it and then giving it up for adoption again. The poor dog got attached and then is just uprooted. I use this example because some people (not saying you do!) believe that rabbits don't have emotions, that they don't get attached and that they are nothing like dogs as far as feelings go, which isn't true at all. Both my rabbits are very attached to me and know the difference between me and my family members.

Also, I believe that if you plan to take on an animal it should be a life time commitment, no matter what.

Anyways! That’s all I will say on this subject in this thread, if you want to talk more you can PM me, the only reason I say this is because I do want to keep this a happy thread. :)

I added two wonderful rabbits to my family in September and October 2004.

Peanut is a 2-3 year old female (spayed) American Chinchilla. She was at the humane society for a year and a half. Her papers say that she was extremely nippy and bit everything that was stuck in to her cage. She was owned by two little girls (under age 13). I did not believe that one bit, I ignored that jibberish and adopted her. She does not bite AT all and she is SWEETHEART. How anyone could get rid of her I do not know! She is a very solid girl weighing in at 6.5 pounds, now closer to 7 pounds.

http://members.aol.com/DesertArabian87/bun4.JPG

Buster is a shy little 1 year old Dutch. I adopted him to serve as a companion for Peanut. Peanut seemed very sad and depressed, spending one year in a cramped metal cage with dogs barking 24/7 and no human/rabbit interaction would make me depressed too. Peanut changed completely thanks to Buster, he has made her one happy spunky bun.

He's a mini rex. He's 8 months old now, and about 4 pounds. He was just neutered this month.

Benj has to live at my friend's house though, because my stepdad wouldn't let me keep him. :( I see him often though.

I have to agree with Aspen and Misty: you are doing any rabbit you take with no intention of keeping forever a great injustice.
 I think this is very selfish and cruel...you are obviously are only thinking of yourself and what you will gain by temporarily having a rabbit.

Initially, rabbits are most often timid and shy. For this they are often held in great distain by many who consider them to be a disposable toy. These delightful creatures are a prey animal in a world of predators. Each one has its own personality, likes and dislikes. Unlike a cat or dog, rabbits will not fall all over themselves to be your friend. The gift of the rabbit is that when the rabbit decides YOU are trustworthy, which you are going to have to work for, they blossom into friendly, affectionate creatures demanding your love and attention. They are playful, mischevious and quite smart. And because they tend to be shy, when trust is broken, whether it's through abandonment, abuse or neglect, it is very difficult to get that rabbit to trust the next person to come along.

You say your cousin "may" take the rabbit. How do you know that will be a forever home, that they won't end up dumping the bunny or passing it along to someone else who may get bored and not take care of it? ALL rabbits are a 10 year commitment, not a project or a toy!!!!!

What you are planning on doing is not fair to any animal, let alone ones who don't trust people to begin with. This "it's only an animal" thinking junk is prepetuated by 4-H and makes me and others in the animal rescue world nuts. I realize not all 4-H kids are irresponsible but unfortunately our rescue has experienced a number of abandonment and neglect cases when 4-H projects have ended. I hope you will reconsider what you are doing, at least take a look at your project with long-term consequences in mind and be sure of what you are doing.

Now, she said she was hoping she'd be able to keep him. We all know that parents have the final say in such matters. I will promise to post a picture of Miss Hoppy when I get home tonight. For now, here's an oldie of an unhappy bunny in the snow:

While hopeing is great, it doesn't mean she will get to keep him. Untill she knows 110% that she can get the bunny AND keep him for the whole 10 to 12 years of his life, then I don't think she should get a bunny at all.
I think it's is unfare to take an animal in and then just give it up when it is no longer need for your purposes. I understand this would be something fun to do, but it is not in the best intrest of the rabbit. I have to agree with Daisylover when she said it is selfish and it seems to me that her feelings are the only ones that matter in this situations, not the rabbits.

And Karen, We NEED more Hoppy pics, I think I'm going through withdraw :o

Hoppy photos as promised!

Today was a bright, sunny day, but it was getting cold again, "Let's get in the car," said Miss Hoppy. "Paul keeps saying something about Arizona being warm and sunny ..."
http://petoftheday.com/online/karen/hoppy-wheel.jpg

But I was able to convince her that it would involve a very long DRIVE in the car, which she does NOT like, and so was able to convince her,
http://petoftheday.com/online/karen/hoppy-car.jpg after much snuggling and petting, that we should stay here.

Do you really think I would be on PT if I didn't understand that all creatures have feelings? My cousin's family is EXTREMELY reliable when it comes to keeping animals. When they moved to England they took their cats with them, and when they returned 4 or 5 years later, they brought them back with them and even made them special crates that are a lot more comfortable than the ones you buy at petsmart! It's not like I'd be totally out of the bunny's life, I would visit VERY often. And, I would like to point out that I am not selfish in nature, and not being so with this. Tell me, will a rabbit die or encounter extreme stress from switching households? I plan on having my cousin visit Oslo at my house while the bunny is living with me anyway, so it isn't like he wouldn't know her at all. A "project" is just like a responsibility you take on when refering to animals. When you take on the responsibility of training and riding someone else's horse, that horse is called your "project" It certainly doesn't mean something you work on for a while and then just throw away. If this is cruelty then what is:
Mass Factory farming (with pigs, cows, etc.)
Fishing (even if you throw it back, think of the trauma the animal goes through!)
Hobby hunting
The mass breeding of animals for fur
keeping large exotic wild animals in an unnatural setting (I'm not saying zoos are bad, just when an animal like a cougar is kept in a room w/ a fake rock wall, a fake tree, a floor like your kitchen and a water pool like some zoos I have been to.)

I always wanted a bunny, since I was a little girl. So when we bought our house ... I got my bunny! And I do love her just to pieces, even when she chews on the house, or decides to remove wallpaper because it had a little place where it was not exactly flat ...

Love her anyway!

All of ya'lls bunnies are so beautiful!
I used to have a bunny when I was about 6 or 7. She was a black and white dutch marked bunny named Buttons. I probably shouldn't have owned one at that age, but Oh well. She lived at my grandparents house, in an inclosed pen outside with lots of room to romp, along with my cousin's bunnies. They had a dog house to sleep in, etc. I loved my bunny lots, but I'll spare the horror story, as I hate hearing other peoples horror stories on their small pets.
I would like to have another bunny or two someday, like when I move out. I would probably get a bunny from the shelter or rescue group. Bunny's are abundent here in Southern California. At the local shelter there are 15 right now...
What really makes me angry is that around Easter the Pet City's in So. Cal put bunny's on sale for $6 for Easter..... And then a few months later, they'll all end up at the shelter because the little kid doesn't want them anymore...
