They say that when one door closes, another door opens. Just make sure you know what's on the other side!
My friend Kathy called me this afternoon when I got outta work. It seems that there's been this beautiful VERY pregnant Russian Blue/Korat mix living under her sister's porch for the past year. When Kathy told her sister that the cat was pregnant, she immediately wanted to have it put down!!!
Well, as of 6 p.m. today, I have a maternity ward in my spare room. Because there's no room at Kathy's Inn, I volunteered. She is the sweetest, most loving cat I have ever seen. She's giving me head bumpies and LOVES to have her fat belly rubbed. She looks like she's about a year, MAYBE a year and a half old. She's been living out on the street since she was a kitten, and I have a feeling she's had more than one litter. And, she's polydactyl on all four paws!!
Here SHE is!!

All I need now is a name. Polly is out because it sounds like Molly.
Any suggestions?

Carole,
I think I'm going to name her Gracie. I love that name. When Kathy called me, I didn't hesitate for a second. When I told my daughter, she said, "Oh Mom, no you didn't!!" I simply told her THAT is who I am and what I'm all about. I'm not changing for anybody. I believe I was put on this earth for a reason. And if that's helping cats, then so be it. Know what she said, "Yeah Mom, I know and that's why I love you so much!!!"

Kittens!! We're gonna have kittens!!!

I got NO sleep last night. Kept having dreams about her having her babies and hiding them!!! I actually took my pillow and blanket and laid on the floor in the room with her. Didn't last long, though. MooShoo kept scratching at the door. I'm kinda new at this mother thing so I am a little nervous. But, cats have been having babies for millions of years. All I can do is be there for her and let nature take it's course. Can't wait to see what the babies look like!!

Is she near your bedroom? The day before Easter last year I heard the tiniest "mew!" from a sound sleep, and Topaz was having her kittens.
Gracie is beautiful! I think she'll be very adoptable once her kittens are weaned and she's spayed.

Little Miss Gracie has an appointment with the white coats on Saturday. Just to make sure she and her babies are okay. She'll be tested for the usual feline diseases. If she tests negative, so will her babies.
She's actually in the back bedroom. I'll keep an eye on her. Once she stops eating and gets restless, that's a sign that the birth is soon. I'll probably sleep in the same room after that.

PurrsAbound has offered to post her picture on their website in case anyone is interested in adopting her or one of her babies. I will not let them go before they are 8-10 weeks old.

I was in the "maternity ward" tonight, clipping Gracie's claws and rubbing her ROTUND belly! Guess what??? I felt the little ooties move!!! It was such a great feeling! I am looking forward to her babies and am SO glad I decided to foster her! She's the sweetest thing.
I went out and bought a shorter bin that she could hop in and out of. It works out so much better as a birthing box. This way she can get out when she wants, and the little ones won't be able to. She's been spending alot more time in there which tells me those little ones are due I'd give it another week at the most.

Sorry that I did not get in on the naming thing early. I would have suggested "Matushka". Pronounced Ma-TUSH-ka. It is Russian for "mother".

Charles,
Matushka is a great name! I like Grace because she's so graceful.
Jen,
Do the babies get more active when the due date gets closer? They've been moving around ALOT and she's been spending alot of time in her box. I know to look for restlessness and not eating. I do hope I'm home to witness it.

I loved being there for the birth of my kittens, and my foster kitties. She is absolutely stunning! She reminds me of an old kitty I used to have, a male polydactal Russian Blue that I got from the veterinarian I used to work for. Thank you for helping her!

I am not 100% sure, but I would suspect so.
All my foster moms gave birth late at night while I slept.

How is she today Donna?

Kimmy,
She's doing great! We have a routine where I go in before I go to work and when I get home, rub her belly and talk to her. I called the animal shelter in Grosse Ile and told the ACO about her and that she was found around an apartment complex there. She wants Mattie to come to the shelter and have her babies, since they are going to find her and her babies homes. I want her to have her babies at my house!! :(:(
I'm going to think about it over the weekend. She's being tested tomorrow at the vet. We'll see how she does. The ACO did point out that it's better to have Mattie tested BEFORE she has her babies. This way, if she tests positive...I don't even want to think about it!

#1 Mattie???? what happened to Gracie?
and
#2 I don't know what kind of set up the shelter has, but raising the babies in a HOME is so much better for them.
and
#3 I too, am sorry to say, but if she tests positive for FeLV............

She is stunning colored! Is she more black than grey? She almost looks like she's black, with a white undercoat. I would not let her go to the shelter to have kittens. Cats catch way too many bugs there, and then that's that for the babies. Her teats will start pinking up, and filling with milk, and you'll see a noticable drop when birth is imminent! ;) Can't wait!!!

You hang on to her Donna! You've obviously proved that you can foster out so I don't know why they'd be in such a rush to have her at the shelter. The space could go to another cat that needs a home.

Jen,
Her full name now is Matushka Grace, Mattie Grace for short.
I too believe that a home is the best environment for kittens to be born. There are alot of rich brats who use the shelter as a "playground", running all over the place. I don't want that for her. Between you and me, I think the ACO saw "KITTENS!!!!" I've decided she's staying right here with me.
I don't even want to THINK about her testing positive. Besides, she looks VERY healthy. I'm confident she won't.
I'll keep ya posted.

Even if she tests positive could you try to find her a home as an only cat? FELV cats can live very long happy lives if given the chance.

Cass,
Absolutely!!!! But if she tests positive, it probably means her babies will too. Don't worry though, I've got TONS of people that'll help me find homes.

I'm surprised the ACO would want the mama and babies at the shelter. Our local no-kill shelter is always desperate for foster families for pregnant mamas because they get too stressed out at the shelter. I sure hope you can keep Mattie and her babies with you for a while.

I, too, am surprised at a shelter insisting on wanting a pregnant cat to give birth there, as opposed to the current foster home . . . odd! Sounds like Mattie-Grace has the optimum environment to bring her new little lives into this world, and I hope you will be able to witness the wonder of it all. If they are FeLV+ it is not the end of the world . . . my two FeLV+ adults are otherwise healthy with no apparent problems and they are several years old now. Blessings to you and her and the little ones!
