View Full Version : Rattie rescues
Does anyone else rescue Ratties from feed bins at the pet stores and have them turn out to be the most wonderful pets ever??
All four of my males have been feeders and have been more loving then I could hope for, I don't think I could have gotten more love from a breeer. (I'm not putting breeders down, as I haven't ever had one, I've always gotten them from feeder bins, maybe ones day I'll get the blue dalmatian I desperately want!)
I read stories about how people abandon hundreds of rats and other animals in houses to die because of this and that reason. Am I the only one that thinks they should die that way themself? How people throw animals out windows of moving cars in hopes of killing unwanted animals. This needs to end!!
I lived on a 10 acre farm in jersey about 8 years ago and used to take in over 15 animals every 6 mons. I found homes for everyone of them, thanks to a mother-in-law working in a hospital! People dropped them off in the woods and they would feed at my house with all my dawgies and cats and deer and assorted animals that would make it to the house for feed. (i didn't grow or raise anything it was wild acrage)
Anyways, I've rambled long enough, sorry..

I think that some people do not respect the fact that rats and other small animals are living creatures. They see them more as something they can just get rid of if they don't want them, like a piece of clothing or some other thing. I have taken in more than my fair share of many kinds of animals, including guienea pigs and rabbits, that people get and then decide that they are too messy or too noisy or some other reason that a little bit of attention and training would cure. It is very sad because when you get an animal, it should be with you the rest of it's life and not thrown from person to person. :mad
Some of my ferrets were like that too http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
Out of my 8 at one time, some were missing toes, tails and nails, but they were so loveable I didn't care, how could you resist a face that said 'Love me please?' So I did, over 8 time for the ferrets. I had a zoo going and was only allowed 2 dawgies on my lease! But he knew I had more and didn't keep all in the house, thatnkfully the husband could build shelters outside. Ferrets, chinillias, ingunians, hamsters, etc inside, dawgies and most cats outside...
We need to educate people that pets have feelings too and need to be treated like that. Not to be given away if you decide you don't like them anymore, or want them anymore because they shed! They are a lifetime commitment! You don't get rid of a baby because if cries, well the same should be said of a pet! Which is why I have animal Kritters and not human Kritters. No nappies, bottles, uni savings, etc...
With rescuing an animal from a shelter has been proven you get more loving and obedience from them then anyone else. They are out to give you 10,000% for saving them. This has been proven with bomb dawgies and search and rescue dawgie, etc... Wouldn't you give the person that rescued you from death everything in the world? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I have "rescued" rats from feeder bins in the past. Unfortunately I haven't rescued any rats from pet stores that REALLY needed it (other then to prevent them from being eaten). When I see a dirty cage with sick rats I can't bring them home because I can't risk bringing disease to my other rats. These are the rats who really deserve better.
I currenly have 11 rats and I am at my limit. The last rats I got were from people who could no longer care for them.
I did breed my rats once and the babies were wonderful. People told me that they were happy, healthy and "bomb proof" (not nervous of new things in the least). I do believe that first time rat owners should look for socialized rats preferably from breeders. While this is true I am not intending on breeding any time soon. There are just too many rats out there that need homes.
WHOOHOO finally someone who believe in what I do when it comes to breeding!! Don't breed when you have millions of homeless animals out there that are in need of homes! Take as many in as you can, love them to death and then keep the cycle going. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
I want a bred rattie, maybe in time, but it's not mandatory, just something in the far furture. I'm more then happy with my rescues that seem more then happy to be with me. When I got one of my last boy, a man yelled to his boy, 'Look son someone his getting snake food!' iI SCREAMED at him, 'THIS is my PET not some DAMN SNAKE food!' then his son started to ask for a pet rat! I hope this guy ends up with many harmful and painful rat bites! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/rolleyes.gif

I agree. I would *love* to have a dumbo rattie some day! Rescues first though ;-)
Right now I have 2 rats, both rescued from a feeder bin.
I know soon I'll have more rats. I can't walk through the petstore without looking in the rat bins thinking "I have plenty of room for more rats...I'll just get 2...or 3...or 15." ;-)
My boys are very sweat, and they are the love of my life :-) Nice to know there are other people out there helping the ratties!

ooppssss.........I ment *Sweet* not *Sweat*! Sorry about the typo there ;-)
I was 'told' to stop at one, then found out they were better off in pairs since they are sociable animals. Then 'TOLD' no more at 2, now I'm more then "TOLD" at 4 ratties in the house NO MORE! *ROTFL* http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif But I'll get more once we move http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
The rescued ratties seem to know they are and still seem to love the idea and love you all the more for it! Even better! The only problem with getting a breeder I've found is the one I want usually is deaf http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif The Spotted Blue Dalmatian, has a trait of beaing deaf. It doesn't worry me, but if he gets loose in the house then I'm going to worry as the Bassets will get him and then I'll be heartbroken! They won't hurt him but he could be scared to death with a heart attack! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif
Off the love the snake food http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I'm not quite sure why I'm posting this but I rescued ANOTHER rat from a feeder bin today. He's a little blazed beige boy about four weeks old. I probably shouldn't have, I have too many rats, but one of my boys just died the other day and another one is sick meaning that my remaining boy (Smoke) would have been alone soon. So I needed to get him a friend sometime. I was thinking of neutering Smoke and putting him with my girls but today I fell in love with this feeder boy.
When I opened the lid to the feeder tank the mother and all of her babies ran to the other side out of fear. Who can blame them though?
I picked up the boy and surprisingly he did not leap from my hand and he allowed me to hold him. Now he's at home resting on my shoulder.
When I told the petstore women that I wanted a rat she basically opened the sliding door and said "You get it I'm not touching them" and as well someone in the background was commenting about how discusting rats are. I hate how prejudice some people are about things that they no nothing about! Oh well.
I know, I want a few more but can't atm.. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif BUT on a good point I did manage to get to Martin's Cages and meet Skip and have him totally re-design my cage and totaly max it out, so not the boys have NO idea what to do with so much space and so much lvls and all! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
Sorry to hear about your baby passing over the Rainbow Bridge http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif If you have have a photo I can put a few words and the month/year on my Memory Page on my web page. Your option.
People who don't like ratties need to meet them and understand that sometimes they have better temperments THEN dawgies at times! Not that I'd toss the Bassets out, but they bark too much at times and get under foot at times and the ratties don't. Then at times while trying to attend to going to the bathroom while the ratties have free time in there they try to climb bare skin and it does hurt a LOT! and all... So it's hit and miss.. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif But ratties overall are great pets but with a bad rep! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif
Maybe we need to hire a few dozen planes with signs over the backs with RATTIES RULE that would fly all over? *grins rattily*

I'm not really "allowed" to have any ratties in the house. My husband is petrified of them (but loves ferrets, go figure). So I give all of the little guys I find to a friend of mine that has a houseful of little rats, mice, gerbils, and hampsters. I go there and play with her little ones often and they are the sweetest critters. My husband wanted to buy a snake, but he didn't because he knew I would cry my heart out every time he fed it! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/cool.gif
I wasn't either, but he decided it was better then 'ferret stink', cleaner then 'cat litter boxes' and less hassle then 'millions of mecesses' *been there done that* so not like he had a choice http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
He doesn't really like them either, but doesn't do anything with them. He'll help take the cage outside so I can scrub it, or once the rattiees are out grab the dishes and bring them into the kitchen but that's about it. If it involves handling them No Way In Heck! He just doesn't do rodents, ferrets, only because he had to, but nothing else. I'm not even allowed to look at snakes in the pet stores because it creeps him out! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/rolleyes.gif And I've even tried garden snakes! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/rolleyes.gif So I'm happy with my ratties! Hey I even got his Mom a total rat hater to pet and shake hands with them, talk about a total turn around!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
