View Full Version : something to chew on

Autumn chews through every toys we give her. She bites chunks off kongs and can have a bike tire chewed through in a matter of minutes. I can't give her any toy without supervision or she destroys it. Does anybody else have a strong chewer in the family?

wow, i thought my dog was a strong chewer, but he has never made it through his kong yet!

what kind of dog do you have???

She is a toller. She's small and its hard to imagine her chewing that hard but she does. When it comes to retrieving birds though she doesn't hurt a feather.

LOL Maybe it's a Toller thing, Tango's ruined numerous amounts of Kongs:p I haven't found anything really that I can give her without it getting ruined, so I'm not much help. Wish I could help you though, hopefully someone else has an idea:)

Fenway chews everything! Last night he found a baseball in the park and decided to chew on that! He actually chewed to the inside of the ball! There wasn't much left! After that, he decided to chew on a new toy bone I gave him. This morning I looked for it but couldn't find it anywhere! I don't know if he ate the whole thing! He'd chew through a brick if I let him. And he's only 20lbs!

nylabone has some bones out especially for strong chewers. one is called

"Made of super-tough virgin DuPont nylon, these dog chews are tougher than any other nylon or polyurethane bone. Recommended especially for aggressive chewing dogs."

Nylabone Big Chews For Big Dogs
"Wow! A dog chew SO BIG and SO STRONG that even your BIG DOG cannot destroy it! These BIG CHEWS for BIG DOGS are made of X-tra tough nylon, are long lasting and designed to stand up to the most POWERFUL CHEWER! We tested BIG CHEWS in clinics and kennels, so we're sure they satisfy even the most aggressive dog!"

OMG, i was looking for some more products to post and i found this about nylabone, please READ ME (http://www.benderplace.com/allcreaturesgreatandsmall/product_alerts.htm#Nylabone)

they stressed that its not the edible nylabones which cause the problems, but the plastic ones.

"(Note Bene: The product in the article below was, I believe, about the plastic Nylabone. Even so, I do not recommend the rubber chews which have the little rubber "nubs" on them. The nubs can be chewed off and swallowed. Rubber is not digestible. Rubber chew toys should be solid, hard rubber with no easily gnawed off parts, and should be replaced about every 6 months or so - depending on how much they are chewed. D.B."

yikes.. not a hoax for sure? - I've just tried Galeilo and it worked marevlous! NOT a chip nicked off on the next day when I woke up :D

^it talks about the rubber bones which have small nubs which can be chewed off. Most nylabones are completely edible.

Too bad I cannot get them here in Spain. I miss then and the greenies. Whenever I go back to Canada i always stock up on goodies.

Good website, though I do think that much of the responsibility is in the owner monitoring the dog with any type of chew toy as with most other products used on their pets.

My Sadie, yep she is my puppy digger, chewer and stealer of clothes a nylabone with the nibs on it. Took her abit to use it, but when she does she seems to love it. Also bought her a kong, has no real interest in it...I was surprised as most everyone I spoke to said their pup/dog loves it. Put peanut butter in it and you won't hear or see them for hours.....WRONG!!!!! my sadie obviously doesn't like peanut butter and doesn't think much of the kong...I really was hoping as she chews other things. Oh well, gotta find different toys. Take care

A kong of peanut butter occupied Autumn for just minutes. She would have it licked out in a matter of minutes but also she doesn't sit and try to reach it with her tongue. If she can't get it she will start to chew the kong in half. She does the same with stuffed bones when she can no longer reach the stuffing, lucky she doesn't swallow the outside because she cracks away at a strip of bone until she has a nice area of the inside she can reach. She knows how to get the good stuff with the least effort but she hasn't yet realized why I take her toys and bones away.

I've found these to be pretty good for strong chewers:
Sterilized Bones (http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444180 6068&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302026203&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023689&bmUID=1117806428522)
Some of them even have filling (liver, cheese). They are a big hit here, not a toy but he treats it like a toy:D
