. . . Will be at the Vet's office :(

I am taking him next Monday (the 14th) . . . and he will be neutered on the 15th.

They will keep him the night before and the night after. I'm not sure if I'll be able to stand it! I'm already so sad! 2 nights away from my cuddle baby???

:( :( :(

Now for the questions:

When I bring Brodie home, will I have to keep him separated from Josie? If so, how long?

If it's just a normal neuter you shouldn't have to keep them apart when he gets home. Since they are keeping him the night of the surgery by the time you get him back the next day he should be feeling much better. Rocky was 100% within 48 hours of his neuter.

Hang in there, I know how tough it is to have them away at the vet for surgery. I missed R&R so much and they were only gone a little over 24 hours.

Poor Brodie. Seeing that it is just a routine neuter he should be fine to be back with Josie.

My vet keeps the females overnight and releases the boys late in the afternoon but with Gabriel having such limited vision I was able to have him stay with Gracie....I missed them so much.

I'll be thinking of Brodie.

That hardest part for the both of you will be the time apart. I agree, by the next day he probably should be back to normal, my Hannah and Puff got spayed, and since I worked at the vets, they let me bring them home when I got off work, instead of keeping them over, and it seemed to help them Tremendously!

Also when Stash had his surgery, at the feline vet I take him too, Because of his leg surguries, we had to get a special doctor for him, and his last surgery I got him neutured as well. I begged the doctor, and he finally gave me the go ahead to pick him up the same day!

I just feel like it is better to bring him home the same day, as at the vet, noone is there for observation overnight. Maybe you could ask the doctor to do the surgery as early as possible, and then see if he will let you pick him up before closing, because then you could observe him overnight;) instead of him being their alone all night. Might work, if you beg enough:D Just a thought;)
GOOD LUCK BRODIE!!!!

I doubt they'll let me bring him home the same day. They're pretty strict about stuff like that. I'd never heard of a vet wanting to keep them the night before the surgery. Is that unusual?

I'm just gonna try and not think about him being alone. He will probably sleep the night away anyway . . . once he wakes up from surgery, he'll be super sleepy.

The only reason I can think of that they'd want to keep him overnight prior to surgery is to make sure he has nothing to eat as the surgery must be on an empty tummy. All of our local vets release the males the late afternoon of their surgeries. I TRY to keep mine from jumping on sofas, etc. for a day or two but it never works. I've never had a problem with any of mine. Hope all went well since I'm a tad behind on responding to some of these posts (I'm new and trying to catch up so please forgive any foolish questions that have already been asked and answered!).

I'm sure Brodie will be OK but it's still Mewomie's right to worry. When I had my two boys done in the 80's, they went in at 8am and came home at 5pm. No problems. Good luck.

Pssst, Brodie, don't want to alarm you but next week you are going to the whitecoats to lose your kitty bits. Don't worry, you'll still be the sweet boy you are now. Some people think that it makes you less of a man, but I say it makes you more of a man.

I agree that it is probably about the food. At the vet I worked for, we sometimes asked the cats to be left the night before, if we had ALOT of surgeries scheduled and wanted to start them first thing in the morning(6 am). My vet never kept any cats boy/girls unless they had a spay/neuter AND declaw at the same time overnight.
My vet for Stash is really strict too, and at first he was completely against me taking him on the same day, have 2 major surgeries and a spay, BUT I begged and called him about 20 times that day. Finally he said Stash could come home. I just kept bringing up the fact that they had NO observation after 7 pm, and if something were to happen overnight, noone would be there to know. If he was with me, that I could take action;)
I understand if the Vet disagrees with the 2 night stay, he just might want to make fully sure that his surgery went well.

PS- We always told everyone no food after 8pm the night before, but I let them eat all they could until 12 am, and extra canned food. They got spayed at 6 am, and as soon as I took them home, they pigged out on alot of canned food again:D

Poor Brodie... and poor you..!
It is weird, but here cats don't have to stay overnight  ! Even females may go home same evening! My Inka and Maya were asked to check in with an empty stomach, at 9 am. I was asked to pick them up around 6 pm same day! Of course they were still sleepy and very calm, but I was so happy because I didn't have to spend a night without them! We kept them in our bathroom, just next to our bedroom; so we could check on them during the night. But we didn't have any problems. They weren't even wearing a collar, and they never licked their stitches. Vets use stitches here that don't have to be removed!
