I have talked many times on here about where I walk my dogs, it is outside of city limits and way in the bush! Today was beautiful, +8 degrees and I had no work and no plans so I decided we were hiking! About an hour and a half into the bush, I noticed a little head pop up from behind a tree. I thought we had come across a wolf pup (time to get out of here!). Bud and Tash, much to my dismay, ran up to it and started making friends. I managed to get close enough to realize it wasn't a wolf but it wouldn't come anywhere near me, tail between it's legs, etc. We were at least 45 minutes from the nearest house and this dog had obviously been here awhile, you could tell by the "bed" he had made in the snow and all the tracks around it. He followed along and I made repeated attempts to pet him but he wouldn't come anywhere near me, he wasn't aggressive, just very timid. By this time I had already decided he was coming with me! It took about an hour of intermittant attempts to get him to come to me, but I eventually got a leash on him and brought him home (he was not happy!). The way he acted, I wouldn't be surprised to find out he had never been in a house, he was absolutely terrified and was trying to claw through the window. Anyway, I called the SPCA and they came and got him but now I'm kicking myself. I'm sure he has no home. I took a few pictures of him.

Anyway, truth be told I am considering going down tomorrow and getting him. I don't know! Thanks 4 Dog Mother, I probably never would have considered it without your comments the other day, damn you (totally kidding!).
IF (and that's a big if) I do go back to get him, where do you start with a dog that is terrified to be inside a house? Bud and Tash sure liked him. Dammit!! While waiting for the spca I sat beside him and just stroked him trying to soothe him and he was so sweet! I'm sure the poor little buggar was sleeping where I found him last week when it was in the -30's at night. DAMMIT!! And he is SO skinny, poor litttle guy. Oh well, just thinking "out loud" here.

What a sweetie!! I think adding another needy dog to your home would be wonderful...we do quite well with three here ;)
Butif it isn't to be, don't feel bad either...you helped get himout of the cold, and if your house isn't the one, there is a good home out there for him!
(Is he safe where he is?)

Awwwwww! If Bud and Tasha like him, ....
Very slowly and carefully is how you start. Crate training, maybe, to give him a "hidey spot" where he can feel safe. What did he think of your two?

AWWWWW he's adorable! What a sweet face....that's so sad how scared the poor guy was. I think Bud and Tasha would love to have another doggy friend *nudge, nudge* ;) I'm not sure what to say about introducing him to the house other than going slowly and making it a really positive experience for him.

I triple dog dare you! :p
Really, my first question is the same as Amy's (Cincy'sMom) - is he safe there, or is he in danger of being PTS because of his timidity and history?
If so, get your booty down there, asap. If not, maybe take your time and think it over? Make sure you can handle it first. Then get your booty down there and get him! ;)

To answer the questions: Cincy'sMom: He is safe for now. To be honest I don't know what the local SPCA's policy is regarding length of time to keep a dog, etc. Karen: He loved Bud and Tash (more Tasha), the three of them played around quite a bit in the snow on the way back before I could get a leash on him, again, more him and Tasha.
I could go on and on pretending I'm not sure what to do, but I will have to admit to myself at some time tonight that I am going there tomorrow and very likely have a new dog!

As if I could say NO I have 2 newfys and a springer and 3 cats and One very old rabbit. 3 dogs is no more work once you get him acustom to the rules and get him comfortable. Your pups have let you know they don't mind another sibling.

You were meant to find this dog. He's going to need someone who's understanding and has the patience to deal with his shyness. People looking to adopt from that shelter aren't likely to want a grown dog with issues and he'll get passed up because he's not perfect. If you're ready for the commitment of 3 dogs, go for it. You know he gets along with your dogs and that's the most important thing, they will be good influences on him and help bring him out of his shell. I agree with Karen, get him a crate or a room he can call his own. Once he's had a taste of the inside life, he won't want to go back out.

Well, I went down first thing this morning as I had made up my mind. They think they have an owner, she is going to stop by sometime today to see if it is him. He has been missing for "some time" is all the lady told me and since they possibly have an owner I was not allowed to see him. I am to phone later this afternoon to find out if the owner has claimed him, if not he will come up for adoption on Monday. I suppose that's good news that he possibly does have an owner but I have to admit I'm a little disappointed after spending all last night convincing myself!

I wonder how hard this owner has been looking for the dog? I don't consider them to be very concerned if I don't see sings posted. I hope everything works out for this poor dog. Don't be too disappointed yet, you may still get this guy. I would be curious to know what the owner's excuse is...and it better be good.

I'm sure you are very disaapointed this might not work out...but think ofthe good...1. You helped a dog find his home (maybe). 2. You have learned your dogs probally would accept another. 3. You have realized you are ready to accept a third. Maybe he will be the dog for you, and maybe not...but don't worry , there are plenty out there looking for good homes!!

Amy told me about this thread so I had to check in. First off, what a cutie you found. And if I were you I sure would be disappointed if I didn't get him. But I am a true believer that if it was meant to be it will be! As Amy said maybe this happened to just open your mind to accept a third dog if another comes along that needs a home.
I just hope that if this dog does belong to this other person, that they will take care of him this time. I know some people believe that dogs belong outside but I wonder if this poor dog is being protected from the weather in his old home. I wonder if the Humane Society would pass your name on to her so if she would decide that she doesn't want him, she could call you. And I know I am passing judgement on this owner but I would be checking that spot out again in a few days to see if the dog has run away again. (I am not sure I would return him a second time.)
I hope this person is not the owner. I think this dog would be a great addition to your fur family. I think a crate might be a good idea so he would have a place of his own. With your other two dogs to show him the way, it probably won't take long for him to understand that being inside is a good thing!

I meant to post earlier but I am a single fellow now so all my married friends use my house as their retreat! Anyway, I'm really irritated now. Let my start by saying that if Bud and/or Tash went missing for ANY length of time, let alone "some time" and someone phoned to say they might have them, I would be there awfully quick. Well, I phoned the SPCA at 2 minutes to 5 to see if the people identified the pup as their dog, well, they were so excited that someone may have found their dog, you know what they did? NOTHING!!! They didn't show up at all to see. I can only hope now that they don't show up at all as on Monday he comes up for adoption. We may yet have a happy ending!! It is probably not fair to say as I obviously don't know the owners or anything about them, and of course any number of things could have happened to stop them from making it there today, but I am well on my way to convincing myself that this little fella is far better of with me. Here's hoping!! Anyway, I'm sorry if I haven't answered any questions asked as I don't have time to read the posts (I still have married friends arguing in my kitchen!) but I will get back to you all tomorrow. I am hoping if they didn't show up, I can at least see him!

I agree if any of mine would be missing and someone called and said they thought they had found them, I would do whatever I had to get there to find out. I would be so sick with worry since none of mine are used to be out in this weather at night. I can't imagine a dog owner who gave a damn not getting there as soon as possible. I too, hope they don't show up so you can have this dog. He is too cute to be treated like he is being treated!

Well, as of 3 this afternoon, the people had still not been in to see him. I sure hope they have decided that they are incapable of, or not interested in keeping him.
The SPCA figures he is about ten months old, is not fixed, and is in overall good physical condition but they want to get a little weight on him.
I asked about the adoption process and was surprised at how reasonable it is. I can adopt him for $210.00 which includes his first vaccinations, de-worming, neutering, and his city tag (good for one year).
Now I can just sit, wait and hope as he will not be available for adoption until Monday.
You guys are right: Even if it doesn't work out with him, I now know that I am able and willing to rescue another dog somewhere down the road who will be every bit in need as this one (though right now I really want this little guy). What really "sold" me on him is how sweet he was even though he was completely terrified and in a very uncomfortable and unfamiliar situation. I am only guessing certain things about his past by his behaviour, fear, etc., but it is not hard to tell that he has not had it real easy in life so far, but was still so sweet: That shows great character to me!

"Rescues" sometimes work in STRANGE ways...
Call em up or better yet - GO IN and fill out their pre-adoption
"paperwork". They may require a home visit to "check you out".
It would be a shame to find out they let someone ELSE adopt him because
the other folks had their "paperwork" already done and you didn't.
Might try putting a "deposit" down on him - so YOU get first dibs.
And I wouldn't be bashful about reminding them that it
was YOU that "rescued" him from the wilds!!
Good Luck!! ;)

I sure hope that this sweet looking pup becomes yours. :) Also hoping his 'so called' owners don't show up looking at this point! They certainly don't deserve to have him, or any other animal IMO! He sounds un-socialized, neglected, and in need of a wonderful new home where he can come out of his shell and blossom. ;) He is adorable! :) I wonder what breeds he is...looks part G.S...but what part the brindle is is anyones guess.

The first pic makes him look like a coyote in the face.
Border Collie/Collie/Shepherd?
The coloring is what is so distracting. There's so many breeds that can have brindle coloring. We have a couple of ACD mixes in our program that are brindle, but I've never seen a brindle Heeler and it's hard to say what they are mixed with that could have caused the brindle coat.
Check out Mahon and Brenah:
www.hppl.org
Mahon probably has Chow in him, but his mom is a Heeler mix and they look just alike, except both of mom's ears stand up and her tail doesn't curl over her back.

I talked to the SPCA today, he has been de-wormed and had his first vaccinations but has not yet been neutered which means he can not be adopted. They will know tomorrow when his appointment is and they will let me know. I have to fill out all the paperwork tomorrow which makes him MINE!! It's just that I can't take him home until he's neutered. YAY!! Now I need to really start thinking about a name! Thanks again everyone! I will update as soon as I know anything. There is no danger of anyone scooping him up before me as until he is neutered, he is not in the "adoption cages". And, by the way, his "owners" never did show up.
All name suggestions appreciated!! I am so far at a loss.

I too have been biting my nails waiting for an uppy-date. Sounds like he'll soon be a member of your family. YAY! What about "Woody" as he was found so deep in the woods? And he's got lovely burled wood colors. :) Three dogs is a nice number IMO...we've always tended to have three at a time here, and all rescues of one sort or another. When the eldest (Greta) gets too old for the rambunctious younger one (Spencer), we'll probably think of adopting a younger one to keep Spencer out of Greta's hair...no pun intended! :D Can't wait to see pictures of the new pup interacting with Buddy & Tasha! :D

Oh, Schteve, I can't believe you have gotten him! Remember when you said yes you wanted to know the advantages of having more than 2 dogs???? God must have known something we did not! When we first talked about you getting him, I looked at your dogs just to see if a name came to mind and I said Tasha, Buddy and Champ. Have no idea why. But he is a champ for coming through this experience and making in on his own out in the snow and cold.
There will no doubt be some tough spots as the 3 learn to live together and he learns to live inside since it didn't sound like he had. But I have no doubts he will make a great additon to your family. I am glad you have opened your heart and home to him!

Well, no rousing update, really I am only writing because I have to sit here and wait. It's 10:30 and I can't go in and fill out the paperwork untill 11! I phoned this morning and they have still not scheduled his neutering, in fact the answer was: "If I have time, I will schedule it today, sir". Now, I'm not one to bash the SPCA, in fact I'm a big fan (and "donator" - is that a word??) but I am waiting to adopt this dog!!! Help me out here! I am itching to take one more dog off your hands! I realize they are very busy but when someone wants to adopt one of your needy dogs, you could at least pretend to be happy about it. Oh well. Let y'all know in a couple of hours!

Shelter staff are not always the most pleasant people to deal with and courtesy isn't something that is encouraged or required of employees anymore (not just in shelters either). Some of the staff at shelters could care less if an animal gets adopted, they are just there for the paycheck. The ones that do care can't stand to work there for very long because of all the mandatory killing.
(I think the word you were looking for is donar ;) )
Stay on them though and don't give up.

Thanks again everybody, I am surprised at the amount of attention this thread is generating but I sure appreciate it! It looks like a done-deal. I filled out my adoption application and the lady I gave it to looked it over and said that although she is not the one that approves them, she didn't foresee any problems. I now "officially" have first-dibs on him and am just waiting on the neutering which is as yet unscheduled but they said they would phone me later today (the lady tried to phone while I was there but the vet was closed for lunch).
It sounds like he has won over the hearts of all the girls in there! They said he is still very timid but is getting better every day.
Best part of it all was I finally got to visit him! He still looks pretty skinny and was a little timid but I think he recognized me. He sniffed my jacket (firmly entrenched with the smell of Bud and Tash) quite enthusiastically and then just sat calmly while I stroked him and told him he was coming home soon. The only downside was all the other dogs there that need homes too.
Well, I gotto go charge up my camera batteries!!
Thanks again everyone for your kind words, encouragement and support!

Well, obviously I am starting to think about this way too much (can you tell I'm excited?!!) as I came up with a ridiculous question: So far for a name I am partial to Woody (thanks QueenScoopalot) but do you think it's too close to Buddy and may cause confusion? I'm gonna be bombarding you knowledgable folks here with questions soon as I have only ever raised two puppies and it's been 8 or so years since Bud and Tash could be considered puppies, and neither of them came from abusive and/or neglective homes so I'm entering new territory! I will try and spread out the questions as I think of them (prepare: Some will be stupid!).
As a mildly annoying side-note, the SPCA did not phone me AGAIN regarding his neutering appointment so I guess I will call in the morning.

Grrrrrr
I'd be a tad bit more than "mildly annoyed" at their attitude
towards you!!
Have they "Taken your MONEY", yet??
I'd walk in, write em a check for the Adoption Fees...
and ask to Take MY Dog Home!!
Is the hang-up that they don't "trust" you to get
the neutering actually DONE?
Try this:
Offer em DOUBLE or even TRIPPLE the "fees" as a "deposit" on
the neutering - you bring in the Vet's Receipt for the Big Snip
and they give you back the "extra deposit".
At least ask the name of the Vet they want to use -
and call the Vet yourself to schedule him in.
Sounds to me like they're giving you a big runaround!
NAME??
Best way to "Name a Dawg" is to live with him a lil while...
"Cinder" was "Pup Dawg" for a couple weeks before she was "christened".
"Smokey" was "Stray" on Pet Talk for a while before "WE"
settled on Smokey.

Thanks Cinder & Smoke; good suggestions, I suppose I will try something like that in the morning. I have never gone this route for adopting a dog so I have no idea what "normal" is. Both Buddy and Tasha were "personal rescues" (I knew a guy who knew a guy who had a cousin.....)
I guess in an SPCA rescue, I just always thought that: a) They cared that the dog was adopted and: b) If someone came in with a proven "track record" (I have had Bud and Tash since pups - almost ten years) that was not only willing to take on, but wanted a "special-needs" dog that had come in and damn-near begged to be allowed to adopt the dog, and not to mention HAPPILY pay the going rate, that there would be less hassles. In fact, it's not even hassles, all I ask is that they return my phone-calls/visits!!
I don't mean to sound discouraged, I am confident that everything will work out. I am only discouraged at the length of time for the "process". I have no problem with them screening me or any other prospective adopter, in fact, I not only believe in it, I think it's necessary. They are welcome to come and inspect my house if they want for God's sake! I also will NEVER change my opinion of the SPCA, they do great work for a great cause but I think this has dragged on long enough.
I will update in the morning and hope to have happier news! Don't tell anyone but I already have moved a large crate next to my bed (with a freshly-washed "wubby" blanket) in preparation! I think Bud and Tash are starting to wonder if we're going somewhere :D (neither of them were crate trained but have racked up a few air-miles!).
Anyway, I told him he'll be coming home soon, and he will. I'll jump through god-da&^ed hoops if that's what they want!

Just venting.........sorry.
Today I officially crossed the line from patience to full irritation. Let me say first, as I have said before, that I have no doubt that they are busy at the SPCA and fully appreciate that, but this is gettting ridiculous. I phoned all day today and kept talking to a lady that couldn't tell me anything, the lady that I had to talk to was "busy" all day. After my third call, I left a message for her to call me, when she didn't phone after a couple of hours, I phoned again and got the same lady who essentially told me to stop calling. Now I think it's inevitable that this poor little guy will be sitting there for at least this coming weekend. I know how unhappy he was to be inside a house, I can only imagine how he feels in a little "cell". If he does end up being there all weekend (which seems more than likely now), he will have been there exactly one week more than necessary. Correct me if I'm wrong but the ultimate goal here is to get the dogs adopted out, right? I'm starting to feel really frustrated, though no less determined. Anyway, sorry for ranting but I think my friends are tired of hearing about it.

That is just crazy. Especially, since you were the one to bring the dog in to begin with...they should just let you have him, and then you get him neutered on your own...but you did the right thing in trying to see if an owner would come in for him...unfortunate that the woman is less than helpful If it were me, and I was available, I would go in on Saturday and Sunday ( if open), and visit with the dog for a while...at least so you become the familiar face for him, and when you come to get him for good, he will recognize you as his rescuer, from that place!! Not to mention, it will be fun to visit the dog for your sake too :)
Maybe that woman will have off tomorrow, and you can speak with someone else ;)
Thanks for the update :)

This is a good place to vent. We will let you rant and rave all you want.
This does sound a little on the ridiculous side. I can't believe they haven't been able to get him "fixed" by now. And you would think that they would be glad that someone is so interested in adopting one of their dogs! Hope poor "Woody" won't have to stay in that place over the weekend!

Grrrrrrr...
What the HE(ck) is going ON with those people!??
Is there a TIME differential problem here?
WHEN do you >work< as compared to thier "Operating Hours"??
CAN you go TO the Shelter an >talk< face-to-face with them??
I've dealt with a few shelters and Vet's Offices when trying to *track* a Pet Talk Rescue Pup/Kat -
and they DO act STOOOOOOOPID at times...
but if you can find someone whe really cares about your "issue" - you can often make some real progress.
And I don't mind *fibbing* a bit and telling the IN-betweeners that Mr/Mrs GoodGuy "is expecting this call"!
Somehow you need to GET to the shelter,
take a seat,
and advise the IN-betweeners that you'll *WAIT* till GoodGuy is available.
As for the Pup's Weekend in Jail...
Sign youself up as a "FOSTER Parent" - and sign him out for a Weekend Foster Trip.
But as someone just said -
Do **NOT** get nasty, mad, or mouthy with "the Staff"...
or they'll find a zillion reasons that you're not fit to have him.
Call in "sick" at work if you have to  -
but I'd be spending Friday "At the Shelter".
>>> (Take a BIG bag od Treats - for the Inmates.
That makes "points" with most every shelter!

I know it's frustrating, but hang in there. I don't know about the shelter you are talking about - but in fairness to shelter workers across the globe, please keep in mind a couple of things.
Shelter work is a highly stressful, high burnout job. Since it doesn't pay much, most get itto the field because they are very committed to animal welfare. After a few years of watching forced euthanasia for varying reasons, the stress can get to be too much and the stress and frustration they feel sometimes comes across as rude behavior.
Shelters are notoriously understaffed. They do not have the manpower or time to follow up to make sure that people follow through with promises. I agree with the shelter that they cannot release the dog for adoption before it is neutered. I know in the city shelter where I volunteer, they do not spay/neuter before adoption, instead requiring a deposit check that the adopter gets back once the spay certificate is brought back. I also know for a fact that there are many times that the alter surgery is not done and the deposit check is never cashed - instead siting in a drawer for years.
Most shelters are open admission facilities, which means they take all animals and then have to make hard decisions. They are not only responsible for the welfare of the animals, but also the welfare of the community. Sometimes the choices they have to make are heartbreaking and a little compassion goes a long way.
Most vets that do work for shelters also have their own practices to maintain. The work they do for the shelters in on their own time, or only during certain days and times. Many times the shelter has to take whatever time the vet can give them and if the vet is especially busy - non emergency services have to wait.
I am by no means defending their actions, I am just trying to explain their side. I would suggest that you contact the director and let him/her know in a friendly and positive way that although you understand how difficult it is for the staff, you are very committed to this adoption and you sincerely want to take this dog into your loving home. Then ask what you can do to expedite the process and make sure that this dog is home before the weekend.
Good Luck - and hang in there.

Do you know what their policy is on 'stray holds'? Depending on the shelter, some range anywhere from 3 days to 10 where it's required they hold the pet in case an owner shows up. I wonder if this is why they're giving you the run around? As far as names go (I do like the name Champ too) all three of our dogs come running when you say one name. They do know their own names, but think it may be treats time, so they don't want to miss out lol! Can't wait to hear good news on the pup! (Woody?)

I just got back from the SPCA, it's not exactly what I was hoping for but I guess it'll have to do: My application was approved. He is scheduled for his neutering next wednesday so I can take him home next thursday. It's longer than I would have liked but at least now I know! There is no way that I can foster him or anything, all due to his not being neutered.
Bud, Tash and I got to take him out for a long walk today!! It was great, though he needs some work on his leash manners! The three of them got along fantastic again and he seemed really excited just to get out of there for awhile.
Bud and Tash are absolutely exhausted now as I decided to walk them there. The round trip, including our walk with Grissom (that's what they named him at the SPCA but it's not gonna last!) took us 3 1/2 hours!
Now that I know I can, I think I will be down walking him a few times before I can take him home. It's probably even better as Bud and Tash get to know him on "nuetral ground" first before he comes home.
So I guess everything has worked out and all I can do is wait! Thanks once again everyone, you've been great!!

Can you get him if you have your vet make your neuter appointment and call them to say hes ready to do it? Sounds like they have only one very over worked vet. But you would think to free up space they would move faster.
Tip for next time you rescue call and give the tag # or take a picture in not the poor animal until youhave exshusted all other avenues.
Glad Woody is coming home.

02-11-2005, 08:17 PM
Corinna: That's actually not a bad idea, I think I'll check into it but it's likely too late now as my vet isn't open tomorrow so by the time I get ahold of him Monday, unless he can get him in right away, it's likely not worth it as I am, in a round-about way already paying for the neutering in the adoption fee. If it cost me an extra hundred bucks to get him a week early, it might be worth it but not for just a day or two.
C&S: I should be able to get there most days, but likely not every day. You're right, it'll be good for him trusting me and hopefully bonding with Bud and Tash (and vice versa) and it's just a nice break for him. He was so cute today, he kept stopping in front of me and jumping up on me (not necessarily good behaviour but I'll deal with that when the time comes) and just sniffing my face, like he was trying to memorize it!

Please,Please Check on Him!?!?!
Oh, don't worry Nicole (delidog), by next thursday the SPCA staff will be quite tired of me! Like I said earlier, I may not be able to get in every single day, but darn near, and even the days I may not be able to walk him I'm sure I can at least pop in to give him a couple 'o pets!
Do you have a Bowl,Bed,Blankies,Toys for him????
This brings me to one of my first questions (I have a few but I'm gonna try to spread 'em out a little bit rather than ask 'em all at once!!): I have a large crate and nice fluffy, freshly-washed blanket for him. Buddy and Tasha have always just shared the same bowl and have food down all the time. I have dog-sat many dogs in my house and the only problem ever is that Tash gets upset if the other dog heads into her food bowl (though she could care less when Bud does). Ultimately I would like for them all to share food that will be there 24/7 (it's in a little holder thingy with two bowls, right now I only keep one full but I could fill both). Do you guys think I should give him a seperate bowl in a separate area and then try to slowly move it closer, or should I just let him at it and try to monitor it to make sure Tash is not trying to stop him from eating? I don't think it's fair at this point to all of a sudden put Bud and Tash on scheduled meals after ten years of food having always been there.
I'll slip in one more question while I'm at it. Bud and Tash get 1 hour a day of off-leash walking and more often than not another short on-leash walk. Obviously, the new pup will not be off-leash until he has some training with me and I know I can trust him. Should I take him and keep him on leash (which seems kind of mean while Bud and Tash run around freely), or leave him at home (which might be a good chance for him to "check out the place" without anyone else around? Or, a little of both?
By the way C&S, no great names came to mind while walking him. If I had to name him based on todays walk it would likey be "wingnut" or "yoyo" (he was back and forth to the end of that leash just like a yoyo!), but neither of those seem all that appealing to me!

Item 1 - Feeding ~
Definately keep NewPup seperated till he "learns the ropes"
AND finds his place in the Pack Pecking Order!
You do NOT want a  Food Fight to spoil the Old Dogs'
early acceptance of the NewGuy!
Also watch that Bud or Tash don't start to *bolt* their food
just to keep NewGuy out of their bowl.
Item 2 - Walk or Stay Home ~
 Home Alone - "checkin da place out"??
 Are you DAFT/Dinggie????
NOT a 'gud idea'!!
"Home Alone" is a set-up for disaster ...
a) UPSET kuz he got left...
b) too 'curious' to stay out of trouble
c) and a dozen other 'risks' :(
KEEP him *WITH* you as much as you can!!
And - he will 'learn' from watching Bud & Tash 'stick close' to

I agree with Phred...especially if Tasha is protective of her food....
like Phred said...you don't want the first thing...eating to be a negative experience for anybody....
if you want to leave food down all the time, first make sure that He doesn't eat so much he gets sick....you can get those containers that let food out a little at a time, and just put in a different area than Buddy and Tasha...then he'll have His space and they have theirs....
Off Leash????
You've had your guys since pups, right???
Remember he is full grown....and already has ideas of his own...I'd hate for him to run off again....Like you say,Steve....get him some Leash Training.....
also, to make You and He feel better...when you let the other 2 run.....
You can go to a Feed,Tack Store and get a 20,25 or 30 ft. longe line....it is used to exercise horses....it is thick nylon....with snap on one end...for collar....and loop on other end for you to hold onto.....he can have a Nice Romp with this, and he won't be loose....In the U.S. they cost about $10.00....
I use this on Joey all the time,so he can get some of his "Bucks" out...and get tired too!!! he comes right home and sleeps!!!!
They Really are a Great Tool...I got All of my kids Fully Grown...So I Never have them off leash.....They came with Habits....I know that they would All be good ....Till a Bunny or Squirrel ran by...then they'd be Gone!!!
I can't risk that....

What I have found with dogs that have been in shelters or "on their own" is that they have not had as much to eat or as often as they like so they tend to eat everything in sight until they get used to the idea that food will always be there on a regular basis. So yes I would get a separate bowl right now and try to get him used to the idea of eating only from that bowl now. As he gets used to you and your fur-kids and they get used to him, you might gradually be able to use the one bowl. I have 6 bowls down and usually there is food in them. They eat when they want and aren't too particular about who is eating out of what bowl. We did have to revise that a bit when Snoopy started on phenabarbitol for his seizures because it made him hungry all the time and he really put on some weight. We also have 3 water bowls down.
This is very exciting! Can't wait til you get "Woody" home and we can start hearing stories about his adjustment to your home.
Oh, and some pet stores carry what they call long lines that are I think 50 feet so you can have them run well ahead of you. Might be something to see if you store has too.

Okay, I'm going to look at it from another angle. *Woody* probably isn't housebroken, right? So we got that hurdle to deal with too. Feeding *at will* might make housebreaking an extra challenge. I don't know how much adjusting it would take for your two to adapt to feedings twice a day. No, maybe not fair but theoretically not the worst of things that can happen to them. That way you can supervise the eating experience to make sure no one gets what someone else is suppose to have, etc. etc. I really do worry about the Wood Man eating himself sick. My Tucker (once a stray) would do that to this day and he has been well fed for over 5 years.
I too used the 20, 30, and 50 foot lines to let Hannah run BF (before fence). Actually I let it drag on the ground and used the *step to stop* method. I was a bit more agile 9 years ago. Don't know if I could do it now. Be aware that one can get a nasty (and infected) rope burn should dog whip around your legs and you don't jump out of the way fast enough. Hey, you're young! There is always the retractible leash which would allow a bit of leeway for Woody.

While walking Bud and Tash today I was racking my brain for a good name and I came up with "Docker", here's why:
I made an agreement with myself that in order to adopt this dog, I had to quit smoking (today is day two!), something I've been putting off for some time, so in a way, he well be saving me as much as I'm saving him.
Anyway, Docker is a shortened version of a good friends last name (Rodocker) whose wife recently passed away from lung cancer directly related to smoking.
Thinking along that theme, I started to think of other people who have died from smoking and the only other one I came up with and liked was Spencer (after Spencer Tracy) but I think I still like Docker better; it's not a bad dog name and it has meaning.

First of all, congrats on quitting smoking. I've heard it can be pretty hard to do.
Second, I think Docker is a cute name, and it has a personal meaning to you, so that makes it even better. :D

*Docker* will work well with your other dogs names. I was a bit concerned that Woody sounded a bit to close to Buddy. The *Doc* nickname also implies the *saving you* aspect, doesn't it?
Having also lost a good friend to lung cancer many years ago, I couldn't be more pleased to hear of your resolve to quit smoking. This thread is turning out to be a real place to find happy news.
I know both raising Docker and quitting smoking will have many challenges. Even though I don't know you personally, I want to say how proud I am of what you have set out to do.

This story continues to be a beautiful one, and I cannot wait until that pup is at home and in your arms where he should be. Docker is a very cute, unique, meaningful name. I would also like to offer congratulations on quitting smoking, one of the hardest, but very best things you can do for yourself and those around you. Cheers to you! :)

I can't wait to hear how he reacts when you bring him to his 'forever home', and how he will grow to love you and Buddy and Tash as his family.

Not quite. I had him out for a long walk yesterday with Bud and Tash. His neutering is scheduled for tomorrow and I can take him home Thursday. We're gettin' there!
He is TERRIBLE on a leash! He pulls like mad until he's out of breath, then sits down and won't move until he catches his breath! Any advice on that appreciated! I plan on walking Bud and Tash there to get him on Thursday and walking him home (yes, I took thursday and friday off - I'm a sucker).
Thanks again everyone for the kind words/encouragement!

For the walk home I wouldn't worry about training too much, hopefully he'll tire himself out enough that he won't pull so much, LOL
And I'm probably a big meanie, but if he sat down I would probably just keep walking. Depends on the individual dog and the situation though.
Once at home I would take him out by himself for training sessions and practice walking on a loose lead. My favorite exercise for this is to start walking and the minute the leash begins to get tight turn and walk in a different direction. You can give a verbal cue like "oops" or "this way" etc so that he begins to tune itno your voice. Pretty soon he will learn that you are a very weird person with unpredictable walking patterns and he'll begin to keep a closer eye on you. You may look a little silly constantly changing directions at first, but it's worth it in the end.
I've used that exercise to train friend's and family's dogs for informal heeling, as well as my own for formal heeling.
I hope I explained that alright. :)
Good luck. I'll keep him in my thoughts tomorrow for when he gets "tutored". ;)
I can't wait to see pics. :D

have you ever heard of a 'gentle leader"? (another brand is called a 'Halti') instead of attaching the leash to his collar - he wears a very light 'head harness' ( to the uninformed, it looks like a muzzle - but it's not) and the leash is attached right below his chin.
what this does, in effect, is allow you to walk and 'direct' him by his nose and head, and NOT his neck - like a halter on a horse.
A dog can pull very easily against a leash around his sturdy neck and chest muscles & with 4 paws on the ground - but with the leash attached by his NOSE - he doesn't have as much leverage, and that keeps YOU in charge.
you direct where his head goes, and his body is bound to follow!
(it's much easier on your poor arms, shoulders and back, too)
put the gentle leader on and also use the 'weird walking' trick suggested above, and it will work quicker than with a regular collar and leash!
Isn't Tomorrow the BIG DAY?????
have fun!

Ohhhhhhhh...
Please give that "walking him home" idea some more
thought before you do it!
All dogs react differently to the effects of surgical anesthesia
and the pain after-effects of the surgery itself...
He MAY be either still "groggy" or in some amount of "pain" or
discomfort even a day after the surgery! :(
I would *strongly* suggest that his Trip HOME be made
by "motor vehicle" and NOT Dawggie-Power!
Even 24 hours after the surgery, SOME dogs are still "groggy"
and just want to be left alone and allowed to sleep.
There's going to be some "stress" on ALL Three Pups when
they all realise  the New Walkin Buddie Guy
is Comin IN OUR Howze!!!
*I* might suggest you pick him up and RIDE him home "alone"...
Then possibly "tie" him up to the car or a handy tree or fence -
OUTSIDE the house...
Then leash and bring Buddy & Tash OUT for a lil
"meet & greet" on more neutral territory.
THEN you can try walkin IN the howze and just say
"OMG! *Look* who just came *in* "with us", guyz!" :D

Hope that your camera is charged up!!! :)
I do agree with Phred...after surgery,it might be too long of a walk...especially if he Pulls....and has sutures in.....
what I did when I brought home new dog(S) ....I turned mine out in their yard....while new dog waits in car....then I leash walked them through the house...(So they don't Mark)...
Then like Phred said....I walked him out to the yard...like look, guys...new guy visiting....they played and romped....then 1/2 hour later...I brought them ALL in the house....Look guys...New Visitor is Staying!!! ;)
Good luck!!

I agree with Phred. You don't want to deal with the possibility of
any medical problem caused by too much too soon.
Seeing as this procedure is being done through the shelter and how lacking they have been in understanding, I don't suppose there is any way to check up on Docker this afternoon. Good for you taking Thursday and Friday off. That will be so helpful in getting things off to the right start.

You're right, I'm getting caught up in the excitement of bringing him home and not thinking about things that should be obvious, thanks.
Now that you got me thinking about it, I almost wonder if it wouldn't be better to leave him there for one more day as kind of a recovery day rather than bringing him home possibly groggy, sore and surely not in the best of humour. I'd rather not wait another day as I'm anxious to get him home, but it might be for the best??

I think I'd go ahead and bring him home tomorrow. From what I have heard, boys recover better then girls, and the sooner he can start adjust to his new home, the better :D
Of course, someone with more experience may have a better idea, but that is my thought on it!
Karen

Yeah, that might be for the best - though every dog reacts differently to anesthesia, it's probably a "wait and see" thing.
Gosh, this is gonna be so exciting! A challenge, especially with his current on-leash behavior, but he'll have two good dog-teachers as well as a good human to help him.
Ooooooooh, can't wait to see the "happy at home!" pictures!

Might not be a bad idea...then Buddy and Tash won't be investigating him too much, while he is feeling under the weather...hmmm..tough call though, probably either way, he will feel back to normal pretty soon...but when Dale got the big snip, he definately just wanted to relax.

As some one has said it really is easier on the males. Snoopy is part Dalmation and hyyyyper! He was fixed and I brought him home the same evening. She said he would be groggy the rest of the evening. Well, he did sleep all the way home (I had it done about half an hour from here). After that he was Snoopy, all over the place. I kept saying slow down, take it easy, don't jump on that couch. Did he pay me any heed, no way! Did he act like it hurt, again no way. And the next day he was just fine - and I really did try to slow down his activity level!
So my opinion is bring him home. If you have a crate, you can always give him a time out from everyone which isn't a bad idea anyway until he gets use to everyone and everything. He has spent long enough in that shelter and he probably won't sleep or rest any better there than at your house.

Nawh... don't go to the "other" extreme! ;)
Doc's put in his tyme at the Shelter! :(
You "broke the ice" between the New Guy and the "Ole Guard" with
the Family Walkies while he was still in jail...
The only ones who MIGHT be uppyset with him Comin Home are
Buddy and Tash - and THEY won't be groggy or hurtin -
you can DEAL with them, if you have to.
Doc "can" be isolated in a room by himself *IF* there is a need
to seperate them due to "hurt feelins".
Just do the "intros" OUTside the Howze - you'll know pretty quick-like
how everyone is going to handle things.
And the idea of "walkin Doc through the Howze" -
By HIMSELF on a leash - is a GOOD One!!
After that, bring him back out for more play in the yard;
THEN try walking them ALL (ON leash) into the house, together.
And DON'T <panic> if there's some inital "Grrrrrin" or raised fur" -
this is going to be a *BIG* change for ebberbuddie!!
At least YOU don't have a KAT ya gotta 'splain things to!

ONE MORE SLEEP!:D
Tomorrow it is. I'm not too worried about Bud and Tash, I have "dog-sat" many dogs in my house and they have never minded, except Tasha when one of them goes for her food bowl.
I think I'll pick up Docker, come home and get Bud and Tash and take the three of them for a short walk, then return to the house like everything's normal and we'll all just head inside. I did have Docker (before he was Docker:D ) inside the house already and Bud and Tash really didn't mind (the day I found him) so again, I'm not too worried about it.
I told Bud and Tash that they had a new brother coming and asked them if they had any objections and neither of them said anything..........so:D

Okay then....looks like we won't have much more time to worry and wait. Like everybody else, I am eager to know that Docker will be in his loving new home.
There is lots for this pup to adjust to. Do we know anything about his previous life? You mentioned at one time that his owners had been found but never came to claim him. Obviously he didn't have much training if he didn't know how to walk on a leash and I'm thinking there is a possibility he might not have been housebroken. Whatever the hurdles are, be patient and don't give up. There are plenty of people here with opinions (as you have already learned) for you to sort through. Some may be conflicting opinions and that is alright because (in my opinion) not every tactic works with every dog. You will soon have a feel for what works with Docker. And thank you in advance for letting us follow this exciting time in your life.

Alright, well, we're home and everything is going ok. He is slowly settling in but he still has only sat down for a total of ten minutes. He is already using the doggy-door! He's been in and out of it almost non-stop. When I brought him home, we played in the backyard for a while, when we went to go in, he wouldn't come to me, I finally got him and carried him in. He soon went out the doggy door and wouldn't come to me so I left him there. After about twenty minutes I went to check on him and he was half-way in the doggy door, so I left him alone again and ten minutes or so later he came paddin' in the living room. He is very timid, if you move quickly he runs away; he is scared of the tv and all mirrors (even glass that he can see himself in). Bud and Tash are not being as hospitible as I'd hoped but nothing major. They growl at him a bit but he is so good-natured, he just stands there with his nose about an inch away from them with his tail wagging wildly. When they stop growling, he seems to think the fun is over and walks away. He is quite impressed with the bone/toy collections that Bud and Tash have and has been dragging bones and toys all over the house and out the doggy door. I realize it'll be a bit of an adventure yet, but first impressions are this is going to work out just fine. Here's a few pictures:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v633/schteve_d/2005_0217Image0003.jpg
"Holy crap, there's a bone right here in the snow!" This was less than five minutes of his being here!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v633/schteve_d/2005_0217Image0005.jpg
This is the only time he sat down so far, luckily a friend had stopped by so I got him to grab the camera.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v633/schteve_d/2005_0217Image0006.jpg
I haven't managed to get any good shots in the house as he seems a little scared of the camera, like I'm chasing him or something. Again, he's very timid, but already showing signs of getting better. He sure loves to be petted!
By the way, I meant to mention, the pound was calling him a Husky/Greyhound cross??

Has he tried out his new crate yet?
:) No, actually. One of his first orders of business was to pick up his entire food bowl in his mouth, take it to the bedroom, hop on my bed and "munch-down", all without spilling a single piece of food! Fairly impressive really! I'm not sure he's gonna turn out to be a "crate-type" dog!!
And yeah, ALL sudden movements send him running for the doggy-door, even if Bud or Tash get up quickly he turns and runs for that door! I'm sure that'll pass pretty quickly.

Well,
remember he's been IN a crate/cage for many days...
NOT a "new" experience for him.
If you're going to "try" the crate - better consider
doing it TONIGHT - while the cage/crate experience is still
"fresh" in Doc's mind.
Spending the overnight period IN the crate will both keep him
out of trouble around the House;
AND keep him out of any possible "squabbles" with Bud & Tash.
(Not to mention any possible "poddy problems" that might come up!)

Congratulations on being a third-time doggy daddy
- where're the cigars????
Actually the timeing is probably pretty good, if you're going to be home and off work a day or so his first days in the house - it'll make things easier for everyone to 'settle' into the new dynamics.
We recently adopted a stray Cat - Teal'c - and noticed the same "dart for the door' behavior at first. (he has also learned to use the doggy door on his own!) I think when an animal has to fend for itself outside, they almost have to be in a permanment state of 'flight or fight' mode to survive. it's not so much a trust issue, as it's become a survival instinct.
As they learn that nothing is going to 'attack' or chase them, they learn to 'relax' more.
We have learned with Teal'c that if we talk (to him or ourselves)as we move around the house from room to room, he bolts and hides less and tends to 'wait and see' more before running to hide. he has learned to identify our voices, and while he will still hide when my son's friends are visiting - Jon can come walking down the hall, and as long as Teal'c hears Jon's VOICE, the noise he makes no longer makes him dash for cover. ( why is it that teenagers have to stomp thru the house like they have 200lb feet?)
so it might help Docker relax, if you keep talking to him as you move around the house - in a soft voice, so he knows it's you around the corner, and not something new and scary that might 'pounce' on him.
good luck with Docker looks like a great family you have there!

Alright, day two is almost done. There is already a very noticeable improvement in Docker, he is gaining confidence daily! Him, Bud and Tash play outside quite a bit, but in the house they still growl at him a bit when he goes to them/sniffs them. He LOVES stuffed animals! I have been working with him on a leash and he still needs improvement but I can already notice a difference. I gave him a seperate food bowl but Buddy and Tasha have been eating that and he is eating from their bowl with no squirmishes so I guess I'll leave it at that for now. He is such a good-natured little guy! So, I guess, there is a long way to go, but in all honesty I didn't expect to see any results yet so I guess we are ahead of schedule. He digs this indoor-house dog routine!! He seems to just watch what Tasha does and follows her. I took treats out in the yard today and was working with him but including Bud and Tash, when I told them to sit he of course had no idea what I meant so he looked at Tasha, sat, and then gave me this really funny look, like: "If this ain't right, blame her!". He's just a typical pup in a lot of ways, EVERYTHING is interesting! So, yeah, so far, we are all really happy!
Thanks for the interest delidog, and pats all around!

I am just thrilled to hear all the good news and see this boy in his new home. That doggy door will be a boon when it comes to housebreaking as will his being able to observe his new siblings. It is so sweet to hear how he loves being petted and playing with toys.
From everything you have said, I just have a feeling that things will work out just fine. When your other two give him a growl, they are just letting him know to back off a bit and obviously he is understanding their communication. It doesn't seem as if he will challenge them and with their being older and well trained, it doesn't seem if they would want to start any argument.
Does he seem to have any problems with separation anxiety? Have you left the house for a few minutes or longer to see how he will react?

02-21-2005, 03:51 PM
Well, as in my earlier update, I am just amazed how quickly Docker is making progress! He is very affectionate and loves to be petted, I'm sure at some level he knows and appreciates that he is no longer sleeping in the bush. He is either very smart, or had a loving home at one time. He now sits for a treat about 60% of the time, so far without a treat forget it! He still runs to the doggy door when something spooks him (which is still pretty often) but now, more often than not, he runs to it and not out it, sticking around to see if it's a real threat or not. He is very curious and pads all over the house checking out everything, just like a normal, happy pup. He loves to be chased in the yard by Bud and Tash, and you can see the pleasure in his face when he finally works them up to the point that they chase him. The three of them are getting along better in the house by a little bit, they still growl sometimes but less and less often. Bud and Tash LOVE this training thing! I have worked with him a little on his own, but mostly with them; I say sit, they've done it a kazillion times for no treat, so they sit and get a treat just "cuz stupid don't know how to sit!". I took them for a two hour walk in the bush yesterday and let him off the leash for about twenty minutes with Bud and Tash and they had a great chase game. I'd call them back at random and give them all a treat and he never once gave me a scare, he stuck real close to Tasha. Last night he did the funniest thing: I was sitting on the couch watching tv with Bud and Tash when Docker came walzing in the room, Bud and Tash both looked at him like: "Aha, no room for you". Without a moments hesitation he hopped straight over them and onto the top of the back of the couch and laid down resting his head on my shoulder! I don't really want him up there of course but I found it too funny to give him hell, and he certainly scored points for "thinking outside the box"! Rachel: I purposely stayed home all weekend including thursday and friday that I took off (forgetting today is a holiday in Alberta! Yay, five day weekend!) to let him settle in, but I did go out with friends for about three hours last night and there were no problems at all, though one of my socks was in the living room when I came home. If that's the biggest problem, I can live with that!!
So anyway, things are still going far better than I ever imagined!!

Oh joy, oh joy! The progress report is even better than I expected and I have been quite optimistic. The time and attention you are devoting to get Docker off to a good start is paying off. A five day weekend turned out to be the perfect way to introduce the little fella to his new home. Maybe all the delays in getting him worked out for the best.

We have not had one single accident in the house!!! At least not that I've found!:D
I don't know if he just followed Bud and Tash, if someone trained him at one time, or what but whatever the reason, I'll take it!! He really does whatever Tasha does so that could be it, he follows her around non-stop (which kinda bugs her sometimes) but I'd rather he follow her than Bud (she's the more obedient!). Excellent, excellent, excellent! I like that terminology *lifestyle assimilation*. I noticed the same thing when we adopted Tucker. That first day he seemed to meld into the routine as if he knew it. Now I know what to call it. :)

I'm afraid I don't have any new pictures but I can tell you that Docker is definately a full-fledged member of the family. There has been no growling for about 4 days now. They are all eating out of the same bowl with no problems. Tasha and him play almost constantly on our walks (off-leash), whenever we go in the yard, and for the first time last night had a game in the house!!
AND, I was finally worthy last night; I got my first *BIG* Docker kiss!
Thanks guys, for the interest, and I will try to be a little better "pup-dater"!
And don't give up hope, Rachel! There must be a girl out there somewhere who loves the snow and cold and is interested in a bald, dog-loving dude who can't cook and puts the toilet seat down roughly 60% of the time!:D

Well...who could have hoped for a better thread??!! I managed to adopt a wonderful dog, gain some family members, and found a dog-loving women who doesn't much care about the toilet seat and can cook! Does life get much better than this??!! LOL:D
The update is still a very happy one: Docker is very-much settled in and loves his "new life". He has started a new habit of "collecting" things in the backyard in a surprisingly orginized pile that consists of shoes, boots, couch pillows, dog toys, and my deodorant (really!) though it is getting better.
I mentioned earlier that the pound (SPCA) was calling him Husky/Greyhound. I'm still not sure about the Greyhound part; I think that was just because he was so skinny though he is ridiculously fast. He is starting to assert his Husky background! He now makes that famous Husky "A-HOOOOO" whevever he is happy (or for any other occasion, for that matter!).
He is so funny! We are now working on down, but I think we practiced "sit" (with treats, of course) for too long as now whenever I look at him, he sits (which isn't entirely a bad thing!).
I will get some more pics up soon! Him and Buddy are starting to cuddle when they sleep but I have not been bright enough to have the camera with me when I plop down in front of the TV. When I get up to get it, they move! I'll learn.
Docker almost never now runs for the doggy-door. When people stop by or anything he is happy to greet them, though still somewhat apprehensivly, but getting much better.
I expected SO much more work and patience to get him to this level but it has taken almost none of either. He is soooooo good!! He still just pretty much does whatever Tasha does in any situation. You can actually watch him "think it out". In almost any situation, you can see him do whatever it is that he wants to do, then look at Tasha and "re-group" and do EXACTLY what she is doing (And while she would probably say something different, I think she kinda digs being the role model!!).
I plan on getting to the Butcher's tomorrow and picking up some of those "Big-ass bones" so I hope to get some pictures! Docker has only had a chance so far to get at one that is already "picked over". Wait 'till he gets a fresh one in his mouth!!

This might be a good time to give some cyber pets and hugs to Tasha and Buddy for being such good siblings and taking Docker under their tutelage and cuddle comfort.
I can't let my dogs see these pictures, or I would would have some *splaining* to do on why they don't get big bones like that.
And everybody is right. That last picture is so sweet. No wonder Docker is doing so well. He knows he has hit the jackpot in landing with Daddy Steve.

Thanks everybody, the comments are most appreciated!!
Here is one more I took at the same time; just a little more "close-up" since everyone seems to have liked the last one. Yes, he seems to have found the express train to all of our liking!!

And, yes, Buddy is really THAT dirty (there are downsides to this whole doggy-door thing)......I'll be posting bath pics in the next couple of days!! (Don't know if Docker's been through that yet, but I'm sure that if Bud and Tash are any sort of siblings whatsoever, they will tell him how much it sucks!).

Well, over the last little while I have been fighting a losing battle in trying to learn to cook, however I am no less determined. Today I picked up a couple of really nice rainbow trout, and was going to pan fry them and make a big 'ole double-baked potato. While coating the fish, a friend of mine phoned so I talked to him for a little while. When I returned, there was only one fish! I found the other in the backyard with Docker very close by (on top of). According to Docker, while I wasn't looking, the fish made a break for it, went out the doggy-door and was just about through the fence when he realized what was going on, and daringly thwarted the trout's escape. I don't know if Docker thinks I am dumb or what, but I know there is no way that fish opened the doggy-door on his own!
Anyway, Docker got in his first real trouble, and I had one really good pan-fried trout!!
He is pretty sucky right now!

LOL Yummy trout. Can't blame the boy for trying.......
And I think a trout is strong enough to push open the doggy door....poor Docker getting blamed...... ;)

Docker is living the good life now. Nice warm bed to sleep in, a new family, and fresh trout for dinner. That's quite a change from living in the woods. :D

Docker, you have made yourself an irreplaceable family now...
For our girls, it was the steak they stole off the stove..
For Spot, it was the box of doughnuts he ate inthe middle of the night.
All good dogs properly initiate themselves by stealing food :D

when alex the wonder was a puppy of about a year, he "helped" himself to a 5 # beef roast ( i was making stew and i swear i was 3 steps away w/ my back to the counter ) a $20 bill that must have been tasty ( found that in the yard for 2 days) and took 5 bites from 6 oatmeal-peach muffins.. that was on the back of the stove cooling. welcome to the wonderful world of counter crusing docker!

My in-laws used to send my hubby and me a Smithfield ham every Easter until my hubbys dog learned how to open the fridge a few years in a row. We quickly learned to tie up the fridge with a bungie cord. No hams for a few years until Grizzly had to go to The Bridge. The next Easter a ham showed up with a note "now that Grizzly is safely planted in the back yard we thought we could send a ham again" Now it's Rascal that gets in the fridge. Once again we have a bungie cord on the fridge

Hi Nicole,
I've been around, in fact I posted the last two weekends in a row as I dog-sat two different dogs on those weekends. Just to prove it (!), here are links to the threads.

Thank-you very much for your interest! Yes, Docker is getting along well, he is putting on some weight and him and Tasha play ALOT now, mostly on our runs, but they play quite a bit inside the house and in the yard. Docker tries very hard to get Buddy playing but that is an almost impossible task; once in a blue moon buddy will oblige him for two minutes or so!
Hugs and Treats backatcha!!

How old is Joey? He's really cool looking!

Hi Nicole,
We've been around, though less so this week due to this wicked flu I've been dealing with, have spent an aweful lot of time in bed! The hounds are still doing great buck Docker still has this very irritating habit of stealing things, taking them out the doggy door and piling them in the backyard. It started with doggy-toy stuffed animals, progressed to couch pillow and the pillows off my bed, onto shoes/boots and hats, and lately it's been anything he can reach, including dirty cutlery out of the sink!! Not sure how to break him of that habit!! Otherwise, everything is doing great, thanks.
We'll be more active again in a couple days when this damn flu goes away!!

Hmmmmm..... make the bed, put away the couch pillows, store boots shoes and hats in the closet, and wash the dishes right away? LOL :p Maybe Docker thinks you're too messy.....;)
Hopefully he'll outgrow the need to rearrange the house....good luck with that....lol
