View Full Version : Heeler Coyote?

I just adopted a red heeler from Nevada. She was found as a pup and is now 10 months old. VERY shy, afraid of people. The foster parent suspected she's an offspring of a red heeler and coyote. She's got the long legs, gait and very thin. She does "move" like a coyote... What are the chances she is? Is there anyway to know if she is. She also has what looks like eye liner around her eyes which I've never seen on a heeler. My cat's in another room till I know I can trust her. . .

sure... had some taken last night but it wasn't a digital camera. I'll take some tonight. Half think she is and half think she isn't...

She could just be from a really shy mother. I have a feral dog that had 4 pups last year on the street. We used the pups to catch the mom and even though we've had the pups since they were 2 weeks old, a couple of them were very shy and skiddish in new situations and around a lot of strange people. At home they are very outgoing with us, but trying to get them adopted out has been a challenge. We still have one a year later. He opens up a lot when we have him at adoptions and he can play with another dog. These kinds of dogs usually bond best with one or two people at a time. You just need to give this pup time and patience and she'll come around. Try to spend some time with her on her level i.e. you on the floor with treats.

It's quite possible.. are coyotes common in your area?

I met a woman with a coyote dog once. They're fairly common here.s

I've named her Ginger. She's mine no matter and has already improved drastically. She adores my blue heeler Chili. Ginger is 10 months old. found as a pup, in the pound, then a foster home which she escaped from, stray for a while, they caught her again when a woman called saying she had been feeding a red heeler but couldn't catch her. She then went to another foster home with 9 others. She now plays with my other heeler trys not to run when ever I walk into the room. The way I get her to come to me is to get on the ground and beg. She comes to me about 50 percent of the time now. She absolutely adorable. I found her and Chili on my bed after I got out of the shower. I think they're going to get along fine. She crawled on the ground to Chili, rolled over, wimpered and licked her chin until Chili started to lick her back. Now she follows her everywhere licking Chili's chin.

awww my gosh!! she is so cute! ;) how awesome of you to take Ginger in and rescue her! Chili is also a doll!!

I am not totally sure if she's part Coyote... she looks like she could be part Border Collie to me . Either way, she is beautiful. I am in love with her little split face! :) I would recomend tons of love, tlc, desensitizing, and obedience training to boost her confidence.

that is a really good sign! what a good girl, Ginger!! it sounds like she LOVES her new home ^_~... I'm sure she doesn't want to go back to the streets.

oh my gosh! the cutest picture e v e r!! that pictures totally makes me smile! Ginger really looks like she could easily be a purebred ACD... if she is a coyote, she's one laid back coyote! looks like she loves her new sister!

I know the African wild dog does not exist here but I have seen one that is similar looking to your dog but is are version of american wild dog thus it is very similar to coyote in there personality and comes in many shapes and forms ..just by the pics I could really see some wild dog instincts in her on how she moves and poses .. but I don't think it was a coyote.

she looks like a pure ACD to me. i think she just wasnt well socialized as puppy and ended up in a shy adult dog. by the looks of it though,, it seems shes come a very long way in such a short time that she'll come out of her shyness altogether over time. :D

ADORABLE dogs. :)

I agree. Ginger looks like a pure ACD.:) There's a red ACD that jogs by our house. His build is just like that. Perhaps you can go to the AKC and compare the ACD standard to your own dog. That often helps.

I think she is pure also. If she had coyote in her I think she would probably have some coyote markings since those would be a more dominant trait than her red coloring. She is gorgous. She'll eventually open up a lot more once she gains more confidence in her new home and becomes comfortable. If you didn't haver another dog, the process would be a little longer. It helped with the ACD I rescued last year. She showed up to my job and would slink around like a coyote too. I was the only one she would approach. Once I got her home and introduced her to the welcoming committy (older foster pups her age), she opened up a lot more. Now she is in her new home herding the cat around the house and going through obedience training. Once she has that down, they'll probably do agility with her. :D Yet another happy ending.

I don't have any pics of her, but if you go to that photo gallery that Vette posted, Dutch looks just like her in the face.

Keep up the great work with Ginger. :)

I don't know if I would say she has coyote in her, I think it's possible but I doubt she's *half* coyote. Whatever she is, she is adorable!!

I've had my siberian husky, Nebo, since he was 8 weeks old. He's been to obedience classes and socialized a ton...sometimes when he gets around strangers he paces and I've always thought he acted very wolf-like. He has no wolf in him, he just gets skittish at times.

p.s. Welcome to Pet Talk! I'm surprised to see another Utahn ;)

Ginger is gorgeous :D. I see something else in her but cannot pinpoint it. Unless she is from working ACD lines, maybe that is why she is lean with a longer muzzle. What ever she is she is a very sweet dog. Congratulations and welcome to pet talk.

I'm still convinced she "is" coydog. You'd have to see her move and witness her personality. She is very happy here; thank God, because she can jump my 6' fence in a blink of an eye. It seems like her bones are hollow. Without effort, she just hops over. She even, unfortunately, jumped of a second story of a house when she saw me. It was the 4th of July (a couple years ago) and as I imagined the dollars emptying out of my checking account and watched closely to see what exactly is going to be broken...

she delicately absorbed the landing and pranced over to me "like nothing"... She walks on her toes... something coyotes do... stelth like... if she were a show dog, I'd place all my money on her. It's a beautiful thing to watch her move. She plays with the other dogs and slows down just enough to make it fun for them. If she turns it up; she smokes them. She catches dragonflys (unfortunately) and eats them. She's killed a rat which I removed before she ate it and eats the mice my cat catches, thank God again.

She does STILL trusts no one; except me. It took three months before I could pet her. She would just watch, watch, watch. If someone comes over; she will not take her eyes off them till they leave.

I lived with a man for a year and she never trusted him, always barked and growled at him... till I broke up with him.

Seems to be eye contact that really concerns her. She's fine unless you look at her and then she trots a way like you're going to kill her. She'll even sniff people if they don't know; but if they turn or God forbid look at her, she's gone. One tenant of mine as made it her mission "not to lood at her". Ginger trusts her the most, however I dont' know what would happen to her if something happened to me. If she wants to escape; she can. I'm just fortunate she's very happy with me.

During the first year; occasionally, I'd be driving down the street, and a neighbor would step out in front of me pointing behind my car and sure enough... there would be Ginger following me. She's just turn on what ever jets her over the fence and follow me if I decided to drive anywhere.

If I garden out front, she jumps the fence and joins me on the porch. If someone walks by, she jumps back over the fence to the backyard. If we take a walk, she'll do anything she can to avoid any humans, but likes to meet other dogs and exspecially chase critters at the park.

I read "God's Dog" by Ryder, this has helped me to understand and be a better mom. She used to throw up if I took her anywhere where humans where; at least, she hasn't done that for a while. I'll do most anything to protect her. She's devoted to me and I to her.

PS- her coat is nothing like any of the other dogs; especially my cattle dog. Man, can she shed!!!!!! She has kind of a wild smell about her...

Anyway, if you'd like to meet her and am in SLC, let me know.

That picture is so adorable. Its really a great picture, the way they are both opposites. Very nice. I'd have that framed... in my living room. =)

We have a ACD x rott mix. He sheds like none other. For the past few weeks he's been blowing his coat I guess. You can always tell where he's been because of the black carpet... Had him groomed and looks soo much better. I cant say whether your pup is a coyote mix... I guess from how you describe her actions, sounds like she could be.

I know how hard it is with a timid dog.. Eli was super timid when we first got him. I think having him around with other dogs (lives with 2 others) and taking him out places and just getting him to experience different things really helps.

Look forward to more pictures of your gorgeous pups!! :D

Whatever breed she is, to me she's just gorgeous! She looks like an ACD when you look at some of those other picture in the links, but those are just pics, not the way you see her in person, and her actions and behavior.

Whatever breed/breeds you are dear, sweet, timid Ginger, you are one gorgeous girl!!! Gentle pets and kisses to you my dear!
