Guys, this wonderful dog in need of a rescue is my grandfather's...PLEASE HELP!!!

About a year ago, grandpa was placed in an assisted-living type environment. He is not allowed pets. His youngest child (my mom's sister) -we'll call her "E"- took his cat (Midnight) and his dog (Bowser).

Long story short (I'm not sure of all the details yet), we received a call yesterday from E's landlady; E moved on months ago but left Midnight and Bowser.

 THEY ARE STARVING TO DEATH!

The landlady will be calling the dogpound today to pick up Bowser; we're still not too sure what will happen to Midnight as the pound does not accept cats.

Here's the scoop:
Bowser is a (neutered) brown husky/shepherd mix (he has the "big-dog" build but short legs - think basset hound). He's an older guy; at least 10 years. We're not sure of his health but we know he was getting arthritic.

I have a few of his puppy pictures, I can post once I find them.

My mind's racing and I'm not sure what else to type...

Location:
Jumbo, WV (Webster County)
As of this morning, I assume he'll be at the animal shelter there. I have yet to find a phone number/address for them.

I'll post more info as I get it.

I feel locating/springing him is only half the battle. Even if there was a way to get him down here (NM), I'm not in a position to take him. If someone can bail him out and either give or find him a good home, I can help with the adoption fee.

I'd appreciate *any* information on him - even if it's bad news.

Feel free to crosspost.
PLEASE help me save a childhood friend!!

(Will be cross-posting to the cat side at lunch time -I'm late for work- if anyone's interested in Midnight.)

I already told Zip (via private message) I will do all I can. May need help with transport if this place in WV is too far from me (just outside Washington DC). Let's not let Tonya and Bowser (and Tonya's Grandpa who must be frantic!) down!

Zipp ~

I NEED some more "details"... But here's what I've found so far >>>

IF "Bowser" was abandoned in JUMBO, WV, which is in Webster County -

He hasn't been "arrested" an put in jail, YET!

THIRTY minutes of calls later -
I gotz me a New Buddie =

"Butch", da "Dawg Ketcher" for Webster County,
West-by-gum-Virginney!!

Butch "tawlkz a lil phunnie", but we gotz us a DEAL!

Butch hasn't had a Dawg Call in Jumbo since "way back in December"...
And Butch is Da MAN fur pickin up Dawgz in Webster County...
So I guess it's safe to say that "Bowser" hasn't been reported
to either the Sheriff OR Butch.

Here's our DEAL ~
Butch is "supposed" to only hold dogs for a MAXIMUM of 5 Days
in his At-Home Kennel;
THEN he's to take them "Over to Summerville, in Nicher County;
but they put em to sleep over there."

The DEAL is Butch has MY Phone Number and is supposed to
call ME if and when he gets any calls about Bowser! :)

AND Butch "will KEEP him fur ya" -
A quote = "I gotz me Bear Huntin Dawgs; and I don't
like ta see dawgs get put down!"

I offered to "pay" for him keeping Bowser.
Butch sez "NO ya won't! :)
Me-thinks Butch is Oh-KAY!! ;)

Further research...
Ain't no "Nicher" County...
Summersville is in NICHOLAS County...
Gotta werk on my Hill-Billy affore we get down there! :p

So Zipp -
Can you PM or E-mail me some more INFO >>>>

Auntie's NAME and former Rental Address??

NAME or Phone of Landlord??

ANYTHING Else you have or can get??

PS: Dunno 'zaktly' where Butch LIVES -
but Webster Springs is about  5 hours and 255 miles from me.

Webster Springs is about 5 1/2 drive for me too Phred. It 'pears iffen Butch lies raht tween us. Of course that's some pretty serious mountain country so weather would have a lot to do with the drive. When the Zipster gets back online maybe she can provide more details. If I'm going to drive that far (and I'm not saying it's a given yet...) I'm certainly going to want to stop by and visit Grandpa. Even if he doesn't know me, a smooth soft stroke across the brow would probably feel soothing. I'll try to keep up with things but still have that nasty old "work" I'm supposed to be doing. Phooey. ;)

oh my gosh. :( what a sad, sad story... if I were you, I would seriously kick E's butt.  that is unbelievably heartless, I'm sure the rest of your family isn't like that at all, it's good that you want to help Bowser. I hope Butch can help Bowser out!

First and foremost, a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone for their prayers and well-wishes - especially(!) to Phred and Laurie.

I've been corresponding with Phred via phone and he wanted me to let ya'll know that his computer is busted. :( Hopefully, it will be on the mend soon!

Uppy-dates on Bowser:
Phred (God bless him!) is traveling 5.5hrs to the Mountain State tomorrow to pick up Bowser (and possibly Midnight if they can capture her). PLEASE say a prayer that his travels are safe and that everything runs smoothly!!

Once Bowser is in the hands of Phred, we need help getting him into the hands of a rescue. Does ANYONE know of a nonkill shelter in the Youngstown/Warren, Ohio area that might take him in?

Please let me know via here or PM.
I'll pay what I can on transportation costs and/or fees.
Thank you guys soooooooo much!

Spoke with Phred last night and he was going to leave at OH-Dark-hundred this am to head to WV. His directions weren't the best.. "go to this here hollar past the red barn and the dirt road that used to belong to Bubba" etc. but he has some phone numbers. If anyone can manage this Phred can. He has my work number and I'm on my computer looking for emergency help twix WV and Phreds locals in Ohio. Zip told me poor old Bowser has basically always been an outside dog and although no Katz have been known to disappear in the immediate area she could not guarantee his behavior in "civilized society" (such as my abode is  ). Now that poor baby has been fending for himself for awhile and there is also no telling what trauma has befallen him (or body critters on his furry self). Phred's going to check it out. I'm sure this isn't the end to this sad tale/tail of woe but let's keep hoping.

Isn't it amazing what Pet Talk hearts can accomplish? Now, Bowser and hopefully Midnight can find a proper furrever home with all the love they deserve.

Phred, please travel safely. Zip, was there any doubt Pet Talk would come to the rescue? I just wish I lived closer and could help with transportation. Laurie...what can I say except {{{HUGS}}}.

I didn't sleep well last night and my eyes are way past puffy. As I related to a couple of friends last night, I am feeling way, way guilty over all this. No one person should have to go to such lengths for a complete stranger and an "furry old guy with no house manners." I think it speaks MULTITUDES of Phred's spirit and soul and kindness.

Being this far away, I feel helpless; I can only offer financial and moral support. I've sent a "feeler" out to Best Friends -not really asking them to take him (though it was strongly hinted)- but rather asking if they have any connections or pull or suggestions or ANYTHING in the Ohio area. Perhaps that was jumping the gun... I guess the first step is getting Phred -with or without the dog- back safely.

I'm not going to be able to check PT or email or voicemail until lunchtime but know ev-furry-one's in my prayers.

Biting my nails until then,
Zip

I am on the phone with Phred - welcoming to "sunny" Podunk WV!! :)
apparently it is pouring down rain there! ;)
and I think he might be a little lost - he thought he had been in WV for a long time then he saw a Welcome to WV sign!

the mission is still on so he assumes Bowswer will be there when he gets there.
He is going to call Laurie Baker to give an update as I am getting ready to go to work!
:)

yup it's official he was L*O*S*T* he was still in PA!
His plan is to get to Butch's house he is about 100 miles away and check him over and let him stay with Butch tonite while he checks into a hotel and then tomorrow is another day. He has an eyeball out for a 'dog wash' or a Petsmart. Which Butch found quite humorous when he asked about the dog wash! ;) :D
So anyone find a dog wash in that area let him know!!!

What a mission of mercy this is. I think Phred may be sprouting his angel wings right here on earth. I could cry buckets for Grandpa and Bowser. A pox on E. Please keep us informed on what transpires. If anyone knows Phreds address and is willing to pm it to me, I think I have a few nickels to put in the collection box to go toward his expenses on this journey.

Just got off the phone w/ Phred again! :D

Bowser was in the back seat, stinkin' up the place. :o Reportedly, he smells "like a barn yard" (yuck!) and is going for a make-over FIRST thing tomorrow. THEN it's off to the white coats for a checkup!

Phred reported Bowser's physical appearance as being ok - if anything, he's a on the tubbyside (sure hope that from some gracious soul throwing him scraps and not from worms) with long -but not grotesque- nails. He's in need of a good groomin' and a bucket load of "parfume" but otherwise seems to be ok. Bowser was "happy as a clam" (this makes me want to cry happy tears - THIS is the Bowser I remember! When he 'grins', he truly :DGRINS:D all over his body) and Phred "hasn't heard a peep" outta him, though he did set up and 'co-pilot' a couple of times.

Keep the prayers coming, please!!
Phred is NOT staying all night and is on his way BACK to his house  ; he said he should arrive at about 11pm or so.

Midnight was spotted and has a home... I think with Butch the dog catcher. I sorta got a little lost so that might not be accurate ( Phred likes to talk to the cars in front of him. ;) ) He can correct me if I messed that report up.

Ok gang, let's keep the good vibes rollin' for:
(1) Phred's safe return.
(2) Bowser's vet check.
(3) Bowser's FUREVER home!

God bless allllllllllll of you - this means so incredibly much to me. I can never ever ever repay all this kindness!! *cry*

(Oh yeah.. still lookin' for Bowser's puppy pics.)

Just got off the phone with Phred myself! He was taking a potty walk with Bowser, talking to Bowser and to me at the same time. Sometimes he would say "STOP THAT" I went "WHAT?" (thought he was talking to me for a sec)He was just telling Bowser to stop pulling on the leash :o They were just outside of Washington PA - just South-ish and a bit west of Pittsburgh. As Zip said, he expects to be home-sweet-home about 11pm or so. Mokey & Cinder are having a sleep-over at Unka Pat's (I think its Unka Pat) so Phred's just going to find a safe, warm spot for the visitor at Phreds. He's sure to be tired out (both of them no doubt) and deal with tomorrow, tomorrow (sounding a bit like Scarlett O'Hara there). He said Bowser is a sweet, friendly mutt and except for "stinkin' like a barnyard" doesn't seem to have bad mats or skin probs. Phred said he could, and of course would, manage at least for the next few days with the status quo. Just as we signed off, OH JOY, OH RAPTURE, Bowser did a #2 right before they went back to the moving machine!! Both of us yelled "GUD DOG"!! Now, on to the next chapter. The journey has just begun I'm thinking. And boy, are there some phunny stories about Adventures in West-by-doG-Virginney! Later all... keep the good thoughts!

I'm not surprised that John stepped in and helped out, especially because he has always had a special place for Zippy Kat in his heart, I think. What a special bond the two of you have, Tonya! I would like to nominate this as THREAD OF THE YEAR!

Oh, I know, this is only January 12th - 13th east coast time.
But how could you top this?

I just signed on a while back, went right to this thread and I have been sitting here on the edge of my seat and crying through all of the posts.

As much as I love Tonya and Phred..........all I can think of now is this beautiful dog, Bowser, and my heart just fills right up. Can you imagine how happy this puppy must be?

I just let out a WHOOP when I read that Phred had found him, had him in the car and was back on the way home.

Karen and Paul, doesn't this just make you bust your buttons with pride - that your starting this site - has brought together so many wonderful people - who LOVE animals?

Tonya, I could give you a huge bear hug.........and Phred......you are supposed to "close" those wings - it makes getting through doors a lot easier;)

MOFF, I think we have found one that "can walk on water!"

A quiet "good morning" to what must be two of the east's most tuckered-out souls. I hope everyone was able to get settled in and a peaceful few hours of shut-eye.

From a couple of the tales, it sounds like Bowser's feelings get hurt easily!

The groomin' ladies might "rest easier" knowing that Mom has personally given Bowser baths before... he's fairly easy to bathe. :D

Phred, the list of names/numbers I told you I'd email you will have to take a backseat until this afternoon or tomorrow morning (right now it's a 65 page mess of uncoherency). In the midst of the Bowser adventure, I completely FORGOT about school starting up on Monday... just checked my school email and, I have homework due tomorrow AM! So, if I can get that out of the way this morning, I'll work on the list this afternoon and get it sent to you ASAP.

{{A million thank you's could never be enough!}}

Ok, I was just wondering because 2 people have contacted me looking for dogs. One looking for a small to medium dog of any age. And another Person wants to adopt an older dog because they are older and don't want to deal with puppy hood. They said 10 was not to old for them. I told them both I might have dog, but I will go ahead and give them a call back before I head off to school, I can understand not wanting to travel after already going so far.

Good Luck Phred and post pics if you can. Only being able to see one pic of the cutie is torture! :D

I've just spend the past few minutes reading though this whole thread and right now I'm not ashamed to say that I'm crying like a baby. :( :(

I'm happy that Midnight has a furrever home. I'm happy that Phred and Bowser made it home safely and Bowser will finally get the love he deserves. I'm sure he misses Gampa's love very much.

This whole story just reinforces that Pet Talk is more than a community of people who love pets. Phred is a shining example of an angel who drops everything to go out of his way to help out a friend in need and rescue a pet at the same time. "Gawd" has truly blessed us all with your presence here on earth. I wish I could meet you or even talk to you. Hugs to you.

...and {{{HUGS}}} to my Lil Sis Zippy. I miss you so much and can hardly wait for July to roll around.

Gini: I agree.....a good nomination for Thread of the Year 2005.

Phred called me as they were walking out of the beauty shop and Bowser had been bathed, weighed, nails clipped, and ears cleaned! Said he wasn't very happy but was quite mellow.
He weighed 30 pounds pre bath. Figgered he might weigh about 29 now! :)
Most of the stink is off - but if you inhale deeply enough you might still smell a wiff of barnyard, but that could attribute to his old collar.
Has an appointment with Dr. Mike tomorrow at 10 am.
They are on the way to buy a new bed and a new collar.
He is going to take him to Unka Pat's to meet the kidz on neutral ground and they will probably keep them overnite again but Unka Phred is supposed watch Callie this weekend. Might be interesting on the Morris Ranch this weekend!!! ;)

I don't know if you want to Copy this in General....
So that MORE people See what a Wonderful Place Pet Talk is....and What Amazing Pet Lovers there are here!!!
Show them what Pet Talk is ALL About!!!

Actually, Deli, this has been on my mind so I think I will do it instead of Karen, I hope that is ok with her. :D

Ashley

Ash, I do thank you for your help. And while "furever home" is the ultimate goal of this mission, in order to reach that goal we've got to determine:

(1) Is he healthy? While he might look ok physically, there's always the potential for illness. IF there is a serious illness, what are the options and what is more humane for Bowser?

(2) How is his attitude? For the most part, he still sounds like the Bowser I knew/remember. But under stressful circumstances and situations, attitudes can change.

Until these two things are "figured out," we don't know what kind of home he'd be best in.

Please don't get me wrong, I HONESTLY appreciate your intentions. But, to be blunt, you haven't given them the full picture of Bowser; certainly this isn't through any fault of your own. I haven't taken the time to write about Bowser as I knew him.

This evening I'll try to post about Bowser's life and temperment prior to moving into E's abode. Perhaps then Phred can chime in and add to what he's seen in Bowser (temperment wise) thus far.

Zippy - The one person who contacted me looking for a smaller dog I told her that I didn't know how tall or how small this dog was but that I would find out for her. I also told her that the dog needed a good bathing and was going to see the vet today and that I could tell her more about him later if she was still interested.

The other person wanted an older dog and I mentioned The Dalmation and she said that he sounded nice and then I mentioned Bowser. I told her that as of now he is in Ohio and that he needs a bath and he is going to the vet and that I can give her more information later if she was still interested.

So no, I didn't give them a full picture of Bowser, I didn't give them any picture of him. Only that he was a male, and that he needed a bath and was going to the vet. I never told either person about his temperment or what his personality was like as I do not give false information to people who come to me looking for my services. I'm not afreid to say to someone "I do not know what this dog is like, but I can find out for you if you would like me to." if I truly do not know what the dog is like.

Anyway, I have called them both back and told them that Bowser was in Ohio and that the person who rescued him didn't want to travel down here after such a long trip to save him, they both understood.

or - how we managed to blow the WHOLE Day!

Doesn't ANYbuddie just ANSWER their phone!?

FINALLy got through to "Amimal Charity - the in-city rescue place...
No Vet till next Thursday, but the Beauty Shoppe was willing to
take on the Hilly-Billy for an estimated $25.
Two other "groomers" never answered.

Bev at Doc Mike's White Coat Place listened and said:
How's bout 10:45 AM, Tomorrow? We'll BE there!

Noon atta Beauty Shoppe...
Bowser Boy didn't zaktly rush rite in; but followed me in
after he ran outta *pee* markin up the front of the building.

Chief Beautician Mr. Stacey gave him the ole eyeball and said
just a "warsh & blow" otta do - no cuttin required.

Enroute to the Warsh Rack, we hopped on the scale and signed in
at a whopping 30 pounds!

"BB" was lifted into the wash rack - an elevated retired standard tub -
and endured the pre-warsh Power-Wash with only a Deep *sigh*
and sad-eye looks. (Escape foiled by an IN-tub tether!)

Soappie Tyme...
Stacey pulled every Jug on his shelf and whipped up a concoction
that prolly would have :eek: removed paint;
applied same and *rubbed it in*!
(I was hoping the Kid's ears & tail wouldn't fall off!)

Tyme for the Power Rinse...
<Rinse> <rinse> <rinse> ...
After what seemed an eternity, *clean* water began to appear!
(Never mind what the stuff at the drain looked like!) :p

OMG! He's got some WHITE on him!!

Tyme for the JET-Dry -
Hi-Volume, *noisy* blower through a 2" tube...
I thought we'd have to pull BB down off the ceiling - but he
just looked *nerbus* as the water flew off.

Next to the BLOW-Dryer -
dawg-sized box with a grilled door - and three hoses hung
on the door coming from another blower...
Not quite as "windy" as the Jet-Dryer.
BB looked *wurried*, but I stuck my fingers in and *scritched* on his
chinny-bone while we waited for results.

On to the Slicker Table for a *fluff* follewed by a <sniff test>.
Stacey did a  and though a dab of perfume might
be called for... ("Dab" = almost empty the squirt bottle!)
I guess reekin like a French Ho is better than stinkin like a barnyard!

Ear Warsh and manicure were the final steps.
Ears were really very clean - and he showed no flinching while Stacey
swabbed away. Nails were "longish" but even the dew claws weren't
overgrown. He no longe Tap Dances on every step!

Throughout the entire "Extreme Makeover", Bowser NEVER "Grrrr'd",
showed teeth, or "snapped". :)

Out front, the Bowser Boy paused an "washed" the building again!
As we headed to the Movin Van (car) - he appeared to have a
"Bit of a Bounce" to his gait! :D

Next stop = Wally's-Mart for sum "stuff"...
New padded bed/pad for the basement bedroom;
New BRITE Red Collar (needs a "trim" - he's only got a 13" neck
under all that FLUFF!)
(Discovered his old collar STINKS as bad as he did!
Gotta trim & fit the new one before he gets *contaminated*!)
New Cable-style tie-out - he seemed to hang up the chain last night
and wouldn't *pull* it loose.

Last Stop = Unka Pat's Place to say Howdy to Cinner & Smokey!
That was almost a non-event!
Cinder came outside first ~ <sniff> <sniff> <WAGG> <<WAGG>
Added Smokey ~ <sniff> <sniff> <WAGG> <WAGG>
:)
Hope it's that *mellow* when we all Re-Gathur here at the Ranch tomorrow!

Home Again - Home Again (Bowser Boy an Me)...
Since he got "damp" at the Meet & Greet (the RAINS have returned
after a 62+ & SUNNIE Day); I thought we'd try out the cable tie
and let him eat supper then "dry out" on the veranda...
On & Off the porch with NO hang-ups several times.
"OK, Bowsie, *KNOCK* if ya wann come in."

I just *checked* on him with a *peek* out the window...
Cable leads off the porch and back up the steps to a *curled* ball
at the door. All is well!
OH, MY... rainey drops onna steps...
OH for the LUVVA...!! WET Dawggie Printz frum the steps to the
*curled* ball... <opens door> <feels dawg>

I don't think he was THAT wet at the Beauty Shoppe!

I guess he "LIKES" rain!
Where's my hare dryer!??

Such a good day for Bowser Boy - now he smells as handsome as he looks, I bet! Gosh oh boy, what a good boy he was to put up with all of that washing and drying and fussy and even the perfoooom. Good boy, Bowser!

Thanks still, Phred, for being a good doggie friend. Glad Cinder and Smokey were pretty okay with him!

Come in out of the rain, sweetie. It's ok, now.

Cinder & Smoke
01-13-2005, 09:36 PM
I did take a few *snapz* at Dawg Ketcher Butch's "Ranch" -
a few with Bowser Boy and Butch; and a few I "snapped" as
we were leaving and climbing up to the car through the
"Dawg Yard". I didn't want to appear rude by obviously taking
pics (Butch & Wifey ARE *NICE* Folks!!);
but I WAS thinkin "NO one will EVER believe me!"

I Did take snapz of Bowser at the Beauty Shoppe;
and WAS going to take some of him on the Front Veranda...
Till he got home SOAKED and lookin like a drowned rat!

We've still gotta set-up his bunkroom inna basement
(move stuff OUTTA *pee* range);
RE-dry and re-fluff him;
then try to get him to LOOKIT the CAMERA!!

----------------------------------------------

Now regarding the NEW Home efforts for Bowser Boy ~

It's NOT going to be easy to find him a GOOD, Loving Home
for a lot of reasons...

I don't know if he's Potty trained - and he's a "marker"!

He hasn't spent much time on a Leash - he's a bit of a "puller".

He's about 9-10 years old and is prolly starting to "slow down" -
he's a bit "stiff" in the rear end his eyes appear a bit "cloudy".

"Commands" seem to be heard as a foreign language...
"Sit", "Down", "Come", "Stay" really don't seem to register with him.

And so far he doesn't take ANY interest in "treets" -
he either ignores or tries to bury them.
(Last nite's *Bisquit* was laying where he "buried it".)

I fear he'll "bolt" given the chance...
At Pat's he jerked the rope out of my hand and took off like a shot!
After a 75' run, I caught up to him because he STOPPED to check a smell!
If I open the car door to let him out;
he's a bit TOO eger to hop out -
and doesn't stop till the leash gets tight!

I'd bet for the last year he's been completely free to roam wherever
he's wanted to go. ZIPPY - Did GranPaw keep him tied; or was
he "on his honor" to say around the ranch?

Then there's his GOOD Points!

He's kinda Mild & Mellow - hasn't *barked* at anything excep
a reflection in the car window last night!

He *rides* in the car like a Pet Rock!
(UnTILL ya open a Micky-D Burger ~
THEN he'd like to join ya inna FRONT seat!)

Two nights TIED on the front porch and not a *peep* out of him!

He <WAGS> his tail at EVERYone - 2-Leggers and Dawggie 4-Leggers!
(Haven't done a KAT-test, yet.)
He's somewhat "timid" with strangers - not fearful - but reserved.

As for his "Current STATUS" -
He's already BEEN "Rescued"...
And he's *IN* "Foster Care"! ;)

If *I* have anything to say about him - he's NOT going somewhere
to sit in a cage and "hope" for an adoption...

NEXT stop for Bowser Boy is his FURRever HOME!

/s/ da Bus Driver & BB

Oh... da PIX ...
Next project after we set him up in his basement "suite".

We just finished "decorating" his Basement 'Partment and
<moved> him in!! :)
(Hope he duzzint notice the wallpapur isnt UP!)

Bit of a rush job - I'd <peeked> out at him onna Front Veranda and
 it was SNOWIN!

Hustled him downstairs (he CAN "do" stairs) and he "explored" whilst
da maid tiddied up and set up his LilBed.
I fear his "exploring" was more of a "search for the way OUT",
but he was <wavin> his now Fluffie Tail most of the time! :)

He was sill a bit "damp"; so we found the Hare Dryer and
I un-dampened him as best I could.
He wears a "coat" built like a deep shag carpet!
There's a LOT more fluff in there that needs to be removed!

Guess he's never had a bed of his own...
He'd allow himself to be pushed or pulled onto it and lay there
as long as I was petting him -
but when I moved away he "bailed" off.
Maybe it'll "grow" on him in time.

I also discovered he'll take Dinner Krunchies like other dogs take
treets... so I guess I'll be "treating" with a pokitfull of Krunch!

He's been "down in his 'partment" for 30 minutes now -
and not a "peep" heard!

I'll werk on "developing" some pix.

Wow. Is that the "pound" or is that his crew in the first pic? I figured there'd be dilapidated buildings (Webster Springs is probably one of the poorest communities in the USA) but, wow... The flecks in the grass ('twixt the "kid house" and the pop/beer cans) .... is that leftover snow?

Regardless, a MILLION thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Butch (and as always, Phred)!! :D

Bowser is actually about 10lbs thinner than I when I last saw him - he was pretty chubby. He looks to be a good weight for his body-type, though!

Ah, the bath-tub eyes.... *~M~E~L~T~*

Poor little guy looks so scared. Very rightly, so - I don't know that he ever had a nice big bed like that or spent more than a couple hours indoors. I'm not even sure he knows what a b-a-l-l or p-l-a-y is. :(

You're in good hands now, Bowser!

Edit:
It's about an hour and a half before BB's vet appointment - but who's countin' ;) - good luck buddy!

WOW, What a story. Bowser and zippy-kat are both so lucky that you where there for them. What a big heart you have.

I wish I lived closer, I'd take him in a second. Old age, not house broken etc etc has never been a problem for me. Odie was the same way only adding into it abused also. For the love of a dog you work with what you have, to give them the best.

(Haven't done a KAT-test, yet.)

I would assume he's pass a KAT-Test, didn't he live with a cat, Midnight, right?

If *I* have anything to say about him - he's NOT going somewhere to sit in a cage and "hope" for an adoption...

This made my day to hear. No cages for Bowser.......Yea!!!!!!!!! The thought of him sitting in a cage all day waiting to be adopted was killing me. It was so good to hear you say that.
now pop him in a cage and fly him to Florida.........I'll be at the airport waiting. lol I wish.

"For an 'older gent';
He's in PRETTY GOOD SHAPE"!!! :D

The waiting room was empty, so Bowser Boy wandered around (<WAGGIN>
for all he was worth) for Doc Mike to check his gait...
"Prolly has a touch of arthritis settin in...
Glocosamine & Baby Asprin otta help!

Weigh In at 32.1 pounds (did he eat da KAT overnight?)

Heart & Lung Sounds = GOOD / No Problemos!

Blood Test for Heartworms...
BB looked a little *nerbus* when the 'lektrik razor came out
for an arm shave; so Doc slipped on a soft muzzle.
Dinner-Plate eyes when the needle went in, but he was OK with it.
Muzzle OFF and Doc started "feelin"...

A VERY Small "Lyphoma" (FATTY Cist) on his chest just off-center -
NOT worth removing & testing - it's "soft" and moves freely -
Doc says almost CERTAINLY a NON-Cancerous thingy.
(Size of a 'squished grape')

He also has an "Umbilical Hernia" from birth...
again small and Not worth fussin with.
(He has a "outie" Belly Button!) :p

Ear Scope found nunbuddie home in either ear!
Dark Stain on the inside of each earflap caught his eye...
<rub> <rub> <rub>... <checks his thumb>
"OOpsie! Must be pigment, not dirt!!
Better quit tryin to <rub> it off!" :p

Eyeballs & Teeth show his age...
Both eye Lenses are turning "cloudy" :( -
but not much to do about it.
TEETH are "worn but clean"!

"Pooh Sample"??
I 'splained he was a lot like SmokeMutt -
"I WON'T *pooh* till ya shut da baffroom door!"

Tail UP, probe IN  and we Have a Sample!
Several minuts of peering at the lil telescope later...
"Uhhh-Oohhhh... He's got some 'friends' inside...
Hookworms and Whipworms for sure.
Rx: is a One-Dose newer worm-killer.
We should RE-test in a couple weeks.
Make sure you "clean up" after him for the next few days.
Rx: sould knock em off in 48 hours."

Tyme fur *SHOTZ*...
Rabies *in* with a "WHUT wuz DAT?" look...
"DHLP" *in* with a minor <flinch>.

BB "rejected" both offers of Vet Treetz
but accepted a few pieces of Krunch from my pokit.

Off the exam table; BB wandered around the Lab/Med room
while Doc & the Girls counted pills and filled out his Hx: Chart.

Timer went *DING* onna Heartworm sample cooker...
Doc <ponders> the test result = NO Heartworms!! :D

OVERALL Diagnosis =
He's a Really **NICE** 'older gent' with
VERY mild temperment;
SUPER Friendly;
and In GOOD Shape.

What NEEDz fixin (da wurmz) are on the way out;
His 'old age' "problems" are NOT serious nor worth <fussin> with. :D

Dac added if Bowser were HIS Doggie - he wouldn't do ANYthing
with the observed "problems" other than 'keep an eye on em'.

Bowz was STILL <WAGGIN> as we said G-Bye and

THANKS, Doc Mike!!

Being in *prime time* herself, she can attest that both she and Browser have a lot of living yet to do. And since she read about him doing a bit of leash pulling, she thought you might want to consider BB, like herself (another 30 pounder) *strong like ox*.

So, WHY in HELL was Midnight left behind???

I know he took off. I don't know of ANY cat that voluntarily goes into a cat carrier. But her surely could've been trapped.

Forced to live outside with no food, water or shelter a furrever home??? HARDLY!!

I find the fact that Midnight was left behind VERY upsetting, as I would've been happy to meet up with Phred and take Midnight in as a foster till a REAL furrever home could be found.

I've tried to start this "reply" a dozen times with different
"slants" - here goes the LAST attempt at a civil reply...

I do NOT like having to defend myself and/or others from coments made by an individual, who might have meant well or was comvinced there has been a glaring oversight or an apparent cruelelty comitted;
but who in actuality has NO CLUE WHATSOEVER of even SOME of the facts surrounding the Kat known as Midnight.

EVERY ONE of the individuals Directly Involved with the Rescues of Bowser and Midnight spent a LOT of Time discussing the pros and cons of at least 4 or 5 possible solutions for Midnight, da Kat!!
Those Directly Involved in the Rescue included:
. Zippy (Grandaughter of GranPaw)
. Zippy's MOM (daughter of GranPaw)
. Zippy's Cousin (another Grandaughter of GranPaw)
. Dawg Ketcher Butch
. Back-Up Rescue/Foster Laurie
. and ME (Phred)

I'm sorry we didn't have time to call a formal Pet Talk Family Meeting
to debate all the Facts, pros & cons, opinions and desires...
But Bowser was on a SHORT string.

Midnight , da Kat, has been on a "short string" for her entire life!

Since KittenHood, da Kat has had an "Attitude" towards 2-Leggers!
Family, friends, and visitors to GranPaw's Place were warned >>>
Don't mess wiff da Kat! She Don't LIKE Humans!
She's *QUITE* Able to Fend for Herself - she's done that for
all of her adult life! She's probably more "wild" than a Feral cat!

It was agreed to by ALL the Rescue Team that the BEST resolution
for da KAT was for her to STAY WHERE SHE WAS ~
as Long As she was NOT going to be "eliminated" by the
current tenant in the house!

And since NO ONE had been able to contact said tenant -
we had no knowledge that SHE wanted to or was willing to Keep da Kat.

OK - enuff of this.
I said a lot more than I planned to.

This WAS a Very Happie Thread...
we were following the Tails of Bowser...

This "discussion" of da Kat has thrown a wet blanket on the Bowser Tails.

Let's agree to continue with Bowser's Tails ...
or I'm outta here!
If necessary, I can continue with Bowser's Quest for his
FurrEver Home with Zippy via e-mail and phone.

Sorry to ALL if this seems harsh, rude, unfriendly, nasty,
or whatever anyone cares to call MY Attitude...
But I'm hurt, offended, and upset that some would think that
I (and ALL the others involved) would have anything but
the BEST Possible Outcome for da Kat in our plans.
We DID have a PLAN - and Midnight's "future" is probably a
Lot Better NOW than it's been for the last several years!

Midnight's "future" is probably a Lot Better NOW
than it's been for the last several years

And you came to that conclusion HOW??? Let me see.
Hmmmmmm, being starved and left out in the cold
vs. being trapped and taken to a foster home
vs. being left where he is and starved by an uncaring, irresponsible pet owner.

Somehow I just can't see how much BETTER his future will be.
I was MORE than willing to offer him a foster home till a furrever
home could be found.

So in other words,
"It's only a cat, let him go,
he'll survive on his own."

Your buddy Butch shirked his responsibility as the Animal Control Officer
and his duty to protect innocent animals,
by throwing his hands up in the air and saying "Oh well".

I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, offend anyone or
remove the "spotlight" off your heroism. And I certainly
wasn't asking you to defend yourself.
But someone has to speak up for Midnight,
as he certainly can't speak for himself.

To clarify:
The old lady (my aunt, 26 yrs old, btw) who left the animals, is no longer in the picture. I don't know where she is, no one in the family knows where she is... only that she went back to an abusive spouse, there are 3-4 warrants out for her arrest, and drugs are involved. (Yes, she's one of those relatives... and I wish they'd add a few more warrants and/or charges for animal abuse.)

The lady who took Midnight is either living in my aunt's old rent place OR is a neighbor; no one's quite sure.

Midnight is NOT a pleasant cat, to say the least. I do not say this lightly as I am admitedly more of a cat ( & bunny!) person than a dog person. She is VERY aggressive and will attack, unprovoked. I don't know what made her like that, she has been mean since I've first met her. I don't know if she was feral and brought into the house, I don't know if she was abused in a previous home. I honestly have no clue.

I will not walk into a room with Midnight because I have been attacked without just cause. She has attacked my grandfather, again without cause, and HUNG FROM HIS WRIST BY HER TEETH causing him to go to the hospital because they could not get the bleeding stopped. (And there's actually alot more details to go w/ that story but I won't be drug into it.)

I am livid and absolutely heart broken that people are finding doubt in judgement of 2 long-time, well-trusted (or so I thought) members of pet talkers.

OK, did you *NOT* see this part of Phred's post?

*Midnight, da KAT, took one look at Butch, da Dawg Ketcher's West Virginnie style Porta Prison and announced to all that She was STAYIN wiff da Ole Lady at Bowser's old Homestead!*

Midnight is obviously an outdoor cat.. Midnight also apparently is untrusting of humans.. Midnight chose where she wanted to stay..

And before you start on me saying something ridiculous like your previous statement of "it's only a cat, let him go, he'll survive on his own.", I've had cats all my life and I love them as much as dogs.. but if a cat does not want to be crated and taken away, you know as well as I do that it won't be... I would rather Butch abide by Midnights' wishes to leave her there, then have him try to do something she didn't want to do and be clawed to bits..

She wasn't 'left behind'... She is an independant cat who stuck her claws in the earth and announced she wasn't leaving... and they have the right to do that, just as humans have the same right. And until we are able to gain the mind control superpower and control the animal's mind, it's going to stay that way.

What Phred did was above and beyond, I don't even know if I would be able to do such a thing, even if I could drive.. Coming in and accusing him of not caring for a kitty is just.. plain wrong..

*edited to correct 'to' instead of 'ot' LOL!*

I don't know, I heard 'feral' cats can be more dangerous then some dogs! And it sounds like Midnight could be one of those cats. I believe a cat like that would be happier in that sort of environment. Like a wild cat, such as you owuld find in the wild, would prefer to live there, alone, away from humans. Perhaps that is how this cat is? More so going back to it's ancestors ways. Anyway, I don't know anything about this situation so I won't try to say much.

I think you did such an amazingly kind thing, Phred! That dog is very lucky you came to rescue him!

This is Zippy's Mom, I am posting under Zippy because I cannot get my account to work. It truly amazes me how Pet Talk people are able to work together so closely while being miles and miles apart to accomplish a common goal. Zillions of thanks to you, Phred for sticking your neck out and traveling to WV to actually retrieve Bowser. Also, many heart felt thanks to ALL others that have in someway helped with this mission. Even the ones that could do nothing but applaud and cheer, "Go, Phred!" (And boy did he ever!)

The pics were wonderful, thanks for those also. Bowser looks pretty good, much better that I expected. Although Bowser's future home had not yet found him, I feel confident that he is in excellent hands. His luck has turned and he is on his way to a happy life once again. Phred, I am sure if Bowser could talk, he would be saying, "Thanks, Phred! I Love Ya, Man!"

In regards to Midnight, I really feel that the right decision was made for her. She is a very unusual cat and would bite and scratch the hand that feeds her. I was never able to make up with her when I went to visit my Dad. She does not care for the human touch.

One more time..."Thank you, Pet Talkers!"

Dear Zippy's Mom:
I love Tonya to bits and I'm proud to call her Sis. She's a special angel and I so look forward to seeing her again in July. Thank you for bringing her into our lives. I know that I will probably never meet you so {{{HUGS}}} to you through cyber-space. I just know that Bowser and Midnight will be OK because Pet Talkers are involved. Please give your furbabies, especially Clarice, a loving hug from Auntie Slick.

OK, now it's my turn to speak. I'm absolutely appalled because ONCE AGAIN, a very loving and caring thread has been turned it into something ugly. It's times like this that I want to leave Pet Talk for good. Do you not trust Phred and Zippy's judgement? It says alot on how much you respect them. What's wrong with you people???? If they felt that Midnight was better off where she is, then so be it. Leave it alone, already!!!

Phred/Zippy/Laurie: Try to ignore what others are saying. I FOR ONE, stand with you 100% and by God they have will to go through me to get to you.

....and that's all I've got to say about that.....
I am not even to the end of the thread and HAD to reply.
I am thoroughly disgusted....
WHERE did ANYONE say that "it was just a cat"
Some where I read that LEGALLY Butch was not allowed to pick up Midnite.
Now that feelings are brutalized and I am sure one person I love dearly has shed a TON of tears of this statement, I thought this was what PT was about......
My heart hurts for my 2 favorite people b/c they did nothing wrong.
Phred did all of this out of his own genoristy and has refused anything in return.
And Zippy's mom has spoken and she knows best.
Phred did NOTHING wrong and I am soooo glad he is being commended by what he did.

Just remember until you walk a mile in someone's shoes and Judge NOT lest ye be JUDGED!

Let calmness prevail. I have PM'd the person - the only person - who made the upsetting comments. I have also had a nice PM exchange with Zippy-kat.

Let all be well.

Pet Talk is an amazing place, let not one pebble disturb the ocean.

Amen, Karen! :) I trust the decision makers in this process to know what was the best thing to do. And I also know that the two main "characters" in this whole saga, besides Bowser and Midnight, would move mountains to keep their pets healthy and safe, and those of others as well. All you have to do is read "history", right here at Pet Talk to know that, whether it be cats, dogs or bunnies, or "humans" too! :) :)

Keep on telling those "tails" of Bowser. I'm like the others, I want to know!!!! :D And thank you, once again, for going above and beyond the call of duty to make this whole miracle happen.

I said a little extra prayer for Midnight tonight. I have a special place in my heart for cats like that, and I can't imagine successfully catching one like that, let alone trying to rehome it. Some things are better left as they are.

*Raises hand as another one who would not like the Bowser tails to go to PMs*

I don't visit PT too much any more but I do confess that this thread and all of the wonderful people in it have made for some of the most heartwarming reading in a long time. Whether Bowser his found his forever home already *wishes* or he will find another loving human to take him in, I would love to follow his story. Phred you are truly 1 in 1,000,000 and a real  guy!

I saw the one "out of place post" last night just before I posted...and I wanted to respond, but felt I needed to take a deep breath before I said something nasty. I'm glad the issue has been dealt with and I can again read the happy tails of Browser!

Phred, Zippy, Lauri, you all are amazing!! What a great story!!

Now Phred, i have a couple of other stories to remind you of...one Sunday almost two years ago, I drive 500+ miles round trip to save a spotted dog...to make sure his life was safe and get him into a rescue...Welcome Spot #3 to our clan!

A few short months ago, my mom took in a little JRT...just to get her in rescue. She even made it to a rescue site. Welcome #6, Pippi!

And now, my friend, you have driven and gone to great lengths to save Browser. Just warning you once they are there, they are hard to part with!! Welcome #3?!? ;)

As I posted once before, the Tail/Tale of Bowser is probably just beginning. Phred is the ONLY one that will be able to decide if he is ready, willing and able to take in #3. It would make a nice fairy tail ending but ain't necessarily do-able. Only Phred knows that. Should another person offer to adopt Bowser I have already contacted the parties most closly involved and hope to be a part, regardless of how small, in any trans-port - sup-port or any other "port" in a storm (as it were). Let's not put any more pressure on Phred to make this respite in Bowsers life his permanent one. He's a resilient little man and will be a joy for anyone to love. As far as da Kat goes.. no, I did not offer my home as I did for Bowser. That was after much anguishing thought but no. It simply would not have worked. No one else needs to know the whys and wherefors of my - or anyone else's decision. Perhaps, and at least I like to think that.. a post was made out of a "first reaction/emotion" and was since regretted. the poster appears to be a caring, loving person as are all of you, and I would hate to think that a permanent "Blotch" would be held against her for a hasty remark. Nuff said.. on with the show. (now, I just bet when I sign my name it won't be spelled properly.. i.e. L-A-U-R-I-E why is that?)

I would still like to send a couple bucks to Phred, even if it's just to help with the gas money to pick up BowserBoy.. or maybe a Gift Card from Petsmart?

And yes, I agree Midnight is going to be just fine as I said in my previous post.. She prefers it outdoors and where she is.. just like a woman to be stubborn and not want to dig up her roots =)

... and there was much rejoicing, so let the celebrations of Bowser's rescue continue! :D

I support Phred, Zippy and all concerned about Midnight. I've known some cats who just are not happy near people. Midnight made her own choice as far as I'm concerned.

I'm sorry this happy story took a turn, but I think it's time for it to take another turn back to the "Happy times for Bowser"

Please keep us updated on him. This thread has become like some womans soap operas for me, You have to check in every day just to see what's next in the Life of Bowser. :D ;)

As for Midnight, I understand why the decision was made and know you did the right thing. For 8 years I had a cat, M2, that no matter what, never liked any other human but me, no matter how hard we tried. Husband, sister-in-law, niece and a friend that ended up in the hospital all carry scares to this day from M2. There was just a wildness in him that even after 8 years of care and love I could never get out of him.

Do not be angry or upset at what some might say, it's only through their heart that they worry, not knowing of Midnight and her background. We all would like the best for every pet, but must understand that the best for most, might not be the best for all.

Now keep on telling us about Bowser, I need my soap opera fix for the day. I/we need to know................More!! :D

I just don't understand how a callous accusation like that could have been made considering what has recently happened with them. I have kept my opinion on that to myself and will continue to do so. So, if you don't have something nice to say, keep it to yourself. I've finally learned my lesson on that here. That same person had wonderful things to say about Phred on another thread about this same rescue. So, which is it?

Rachel
01-15-2005, 03:00 PM
I am aghast that anyone could follow this tale and end up questioning judgement or extent of caring that has been evidenced in these last days. What makes it even worse is that the hearts of the people involved in devoting an extensive amount time and energy as well as dipping into their pockets to do a good deed have been wounded. There is a saying that *no good deed goes unpunished*, but to see that happen here makes me very, very sad.

I can only beg and plead that Phred will realize that his work is not devalued, his efforts are not for naught, his sacrifice not undone. He must know from the posts and viewings of this thread how much we want to follow the continuing tribulations and triumphs of Bowser Boy. And he needs to consider that those of us who want to contribute in the only way we can (a donation of funds) should be allowed to do so.

Oh, Phred! Learn to do yer typin on long tails - er, tales - in a word-processor or something more stable than Netscape, then you can save periodically, and cut and paste the whole thing into Pet Talk when you're ready!

Hi, Phred, Amy just told me about this post this afternon when I was in Toledo visiting. What a hero you are!!!! I am sure many of us would have "liked" to have helped but to get actually motivated and "do" something is a very kind and generous act on your part. They say no matter how many positive comments we get, we always remember the negative comment. I hope you will put the negative out of your mind and focus on what a great thing you did and how many of us here at PetTalk think you are the greatest! Diana

I am very happy that the dawg and kitty kat situation was resolved for both pets best interests.

However I do not think that Moosmom was out of order, when I read the tale myself I was concerned about Midnight myself and the way the story was told it was very confusing , I had to read it twice to get the whole story.

For the dog owners benefit just because a cat seems aggressive does not mean it will not settle in the right home, however I do not see a problem in an inside/outside home as long as the new owner feds, vaccinates and loves Midnight.

Moosmom is only showing concern for a unwanted abandoned cat and I commend her having a heart of gold and worrying about Midnight.

I hope Phred, Zippy et al can see Moosmom's posts for what they were...i.e. from a concerned cat lover.

Bless you all for helping both animals find their furever homes :D

Loved the pictures of the dogs together! And the picture of the 4 of them together does give a great indication of Bowser's size. Bowser is soooo cute!

I just asked Carl if he wanted number 7 and he just about exploded (not in anger, in amazement that I would even ask). I then told him the story of Bowser (he got back late last night from job hunting in North Carolina) and he said, "Phred only has 3 - didn't he say something about Pippi finding HER forever home with US when you said you were putting her into a rescue group?" Sounds like Bowser would be a great addition to his twosome!"

Housebreaking an older dog would probably be very difficult.

The three "regulars" were offered an "outie";
plan was to "hook up" da Bowser Boy for a "tethered" outie...

# 1, #2, #3 out & BLOCK the door while I fetch the tether on the porch...

Tether in hand, re-blocking door, reach down to complete hook-up
on #4 and <*Zippppp*> - - #4 Be GONE!!!

Son uvva ?---!!!!

Gotta give him credit (or he's dumm) - the Lil BRAT didn't GO
very far... Never left the yard.

Put a LOTTA miles in checkin the place out,
but never got ONto the road, didn't do a Meet & Greet with
the neighbor's HORSES...

But SURE didn't "COME", either!

Cinder dispatched to "Go GET him!
(Or at least FOLLOW him!!) I'll get da Bus"

TWENTY minutes later, my feet soaked, he WAS stayin "close";
just NOT ready to "come IN"!

He'd romp into the garage, look & RUN back out.
Final "fix"??
ME upstairs <lookin> down from above, garage door open a foot...
Cinder In & Out with the BRAT close on her heels...

INTO the garage they go...
<Punch> the upstairs remote button...
<*SLAM*> goes the door!

GOT'cha!!

Ever find it "difficult" to <Talk Happie> when you'd like to
<STRANGLE> one of the 4-Leggers!????

I'm STILL <shakin>!!

Cali sez "See Ya!!
Mom & Dad back home;
I'm outta here to return her uppa street.

*Memo to self:
When "blocking" door -
Keep yur LEGS TOGETHER, Stoopid!!

LMAO! That is so funny(the garage door part, anyway) I would opt for keeping the door closed until hooked up, I think. That's what I do. But, I've only got one dog.

Note on finding a new home for Bowser - a fenced yard would be good! Just in case ...

Gracie, beloved Great Dane mix of my growing up years, made us all very careful about grabbing a collar BEFORE we open a door. She had that slick-as-glass coat, and if you missed catching her collar as she "made a break for it," trying to grab any other part of her was futile - she'd just slip right through your grip! She was funny, though. She'd take off, but pause at the point from the nieghbor's yard where we could see her from the back door. She'd wait to hear "Gracie! Get back here!" then off she'd go, into the woods.

Did Cinder get and extra biscuit for at least herding Bowser? ;)

Phred thanks so much for the pictures and updates! Bowser looks so much like my childhood dog, Laddie (Heinz57 dog). Excuse me, but Ripley would like to have a word with Bowser. OK Ripley you can climb up now. :)

Hi Bowser, Ripley here!
Two years ago today I gots sprunged from the shelter place. My mom thinks I musta been a door darter becuz I wound up at that shelter place cuz the ladies there told her I was a stray whatever that is. I was sorta stupid and didn't learn my lesson when I came to live here. I tried to dash out the door just like you and led my new hoomans on a wild chase the first week I was here. I think I aged the old lady about ten years! :p Anyways, I sorta learned from all that and I hope you do too. Ya gotta see a good thing for what it is - a good home, wiff lots food, a warm bed and a built in couple furry friends like ya got, not to mention the nice hooman who drove miles to get ya. Yessiree, Bowser, you mind your p's and q's and stop that door dartin'. Ya got a good thing goin' there.

Wags to you,
Ripley

Cinder & Smoke
01-16-2005, 08:50 PM
W:cool:W! ~ 4 Dawgz atta tyme! ~ How'd he DO dat!?

All 4 lined up inna row for a "snappie"!
How'd he DO dat!?

A few Trade Seekritz at work there:

"4 Dawgz atta tyme?"

No sweat!
Course ya din's see any "snappies" of THAT part of our outing,
did ya?

Parked just outside the fence/gate at the old Corps of Engineers
entrance - now Maintenance Complex.

The PLAN:
Cinder & SmokeMutt hooked to one Y-Thingy with long-rope in one hand;
Cali & Bowser hooked to another Y-Thingy with shorter leash in other hand.

Off to a "rocky" start...
Open rear door of Bus to begin attaching Y-Thingies...
Cinder door-darts and is inside the gate in two seconds
(with NO ropey/leash)!
Bowser half way out when I grabbed his collar and snapped a Y-Thingy on him;
but he squirms free and takes off - NOT getting back in da Bus!

Holler profanities at Cinder (ignored) and  notice Couple
wiff DAWG returning our way.
Cinder moving THEIR way between pauses to <sniff>.
Open Bus door and attach other end of Bowser's Y-Thingy to Cali;
Slam door. One IN connected to one OUT - Bowser ain't goin anywhere.

Grab rope from pile on ground and take off after Cinder.
Alternate between "Here, Cin" and gross profanities... results poor.
She finally caught my "drift" and slowed down for "capture".
Back to da Bus, Cinder in tow.

Open Bus door & toss Cali out after attaching leash to Bowser/Cali Y-Thingy.
Wrap leash around arm.

Second Y-Thing onto SmokeMut's collar; signal him OUT and STAY!!
(Bein da GUD Chile inna fambly - an noting a bit of "stress" in Dad's voice,
he SITS then figures might be a good time for a DOWN as a show of good faith.)

Other end of Smoke's Y-Thingy onto Cinder; move her ropey to Y-Thingy.
Add choke collars to Cinder & Bowser - to "equalize" things for their team-mate.

Final *check* - everyone Hooked-Up;
close & lock da Bus an we're ready to stroll.

Neglected to consider the "curiosity factor" of the 4-Leggers...
"Who you hooked to? I got him; She's my partner;
Where are you? ... "
They manage to circle ME, braid, knot, snag and otherwise make
a Complete MESS of the rigging in 30 seconds.

Other Couple wiff Dawg walk by headed for their car...
"Got yur hands full, huh?"
:o

Boxer *lurches* over to say "Howdie!"
MORE circling & knotting while My Four accomplish the Meet & Greet.

I sat down on the driveway to extricate my feet from da rope MESS.
Anothe 5 minutes of *flippin* dawgs over & under moving ropes to
seperate the "Teams".

Me thinks this is gonna be a "challenge"!
I dropped the Cinder/Smokey ropey and let them manage on their own.
SmokeMutt is a GEM at "returning" if he thinks he's too far from Dad...
And he CAN drag Cinder back with him!

Cali made a great Dawg Anchor for Bowser -
he had a tuff tyme keepin her movin along
(she's not a Big Fan of long hikes!)

After a quarter mile - the big trick was to "release" Smokey from
a return to "check in" before his Team crossed ropes
with the Slower Team.

As we returned to da Bus I was thinkin we had it down pretty well -
to bad there was NObuddie inna Park to show off our Drill Team skills to!
---------------------------------------

Sunlight fading; we made a quick return to da Ranch to fetch the
CAMERA that "sumbuddie" furgotz to bring along.

Off to the Other BigLake swimmin hole / boat launch to grab the
setting sun which shines on the boat dock from across the lake...

MUCH Better "organized" the Second Tyme Around wiff da Hook-Ups!
NUNbuddie "escaped" AND I managed to NOT get "roped" into either Team!!

So HOW'd he get that "4-Dawg Inna Row" *snappie*?

1) LOTTA *threats* of "Great Bodily Harm to YOU!" iffin ya don't
"SITTTT! & STAAAAAY!" where I PUT ya!

2) Look "close"! ~
Note that Cinder & Smoke have their collar rings
clipped together with ONE snap!
Same with Team Two - Cali & Bowser almost "glued at the neck"!

3) I said SITTTT! and STAAAAAY!! ~~~ DANg IT!! ~ STAAAAY!
Oh yeah... and **SMILE**, too, please!

4) YOU folks are seeing ONE snappie...
(I only had to TAKE about 50-some.)

The "models" would <HOLD-IT> for about 5 snaps before one or two
would complain "He's NOT bein verrie *friendly* bout diss...
I'z OUTTA here!"

("Fleeing" is difficult when you're rubbin Chins & Shoulders
wiff your Running Mate!)

Poor Bowser was the most difficult... He'd "SIT" till I'd back up
a few feet to take the shot; then <*BOING*> ~
the springs in his butt took over and he was *UP* and
lookin for a way OUT!

After the sun faded; both Teams had another *romp* in the Park!

An DAT's How we Dun It!

Chapter II -

4 Dog Mother
01-17-2005, 08:25 AM
I feel your pain Phred!! I was watching mom's Taggert and took my 3, plus him to the "Dog Days of September" at the park. They were all very good, but getting 4 dogs, to go the same way, and the same time, and sit for a picture is a hoot!

One trick I have learned, separate the 2 most reliable ( for me, the girls) and let them help "watch" the other two (the boys!!)

Amy, are you suggesting that MY Taggert is not reliable when walking? That he would "run" and keep on "runnin" if he got a chance. Good girl, I knew I didn't raise no dumbie.

Phred and Amy, now come one, tell me what is so hard about walking 4 dogs? I take six to Scooter's dog park and BG dogpark often. So what if I look silly wrapped in dogleashes, inching along afraid I will trip any minute.

Having had the experience of maneauvering 4 or more dogs, I feel for you Phred. I laughed because I could see EXACTLY what was happening. One day last year before they banned my five at the dog park, two got away from me and I got mad and dropped all the leashes and said see if I care, run away! Luckily for me, they all ran for the gate and waited patiently for me to catch up. It was snowy and cold that day so I sure am glad that is where they went because I am not sure I could have caught all of them!

Oh good grief - this time I can't stop laughing at the dawgz antics Phred - I've got tummy ache with laughing - the mental pics., are just too much!!!

Pleased the trip to Doc Mikes was such a success - all things considered.

The pics from the Lake trip are just so good - there was I thinking you'd just plonked the dawgz down and they "stayed"!!! ROFL!!

One little accident can't be held against Bowser can it? Just got a smaller water tank than Cinder and Smoke!! :D :D

Lots of {{{{{{Hugs}}}}} to da bus driver.

As for the accident :( , guess Rachel said it best... he's gotta make a mistake to know it's a mistake. He seems to be a smart, sensitive guy... hopefully no more puddles from here on out, if for no other reason than to keep his feelings from getting hurt.

A round of :cool:treats:cool: on me, then I'm headed back to bed! Not even bothering with work tomorrow, I don't think.

Cinder & Smoke
01-18-2005, 12:58 AM
:)

Bowser Boy seems to be "Fittin In" pretty well -
learnig a few of da Howze Rulez and
feeling more comfortable with Cinder & Smokey...

When I <spring> him out of his 'partment in the basement in
the morning, he's quick to bound up the stairs to join da Gang.
He was going straight to the basement/garage door to see if
"escape" was possible.

"Outies" are a bit more organized - his tether cable fits
under the front door so it can remain INside between uses.
LOT easier to hook him up INside without me having to try "blocking"
the open door!

Inner "warmth" seems to be appreciated by BB!
He's MUCH more eager to bound in the open door than he was.
And Cinder seems MUCH less interested in taking UN-approved
"long hikes" during her outies - she kinda "hangs around the house" -
prolly afraid HE'll get sumpin she doesn't!

He's developed an appreciation for TREETS!!
Sinder & Smoke INSIST on a treet when they return from an outie...
Bowser would take one, but instantly <spit> it out as soon as he got it.
TODAY he took and KEPT each one offered!
He's still very "timid" - sticks his nose in to take the treet;
but retreats down the hall to *eat* it.
Still only likes the "Chawklit" ones!

Da KAT has mellowed considerably!!
He'll now walk around the house without needing to dash for safety!
And he no longer moves with constant glances over his shoulder.
He's spent a lot more time on a chair without leaping on the
table every time BB walked into the room.
And *I* haven't heard a single "Hisssss! all day!!

BB even participated in a typical C&S "play session"...
They LOVE to Play Fight & play "Tag" ~
One will walk up to the other and Nose Punch, Bite an Ear, of just Pounce
on, and the Battle Begins - complete with *Grrrrin*, *Snarlin*,
*Woofin* and other LOUD sound effects!
It started this morning, and I heard a new "voice" in the mix!
I looked and there was Bowser - doing his best to avoid the rasslin
but joining in the "discussion".
He ran a few "laps" of the "Tag Match" (a top-speed RACE around
the center of the room furniture island, with frquent reversals of
direction, and jumping over of each other). Bowser wasn't quite
*fast* enough; and wound up being <run over> a few times...
so he "spectated" from the sidelines towards the end.

And he's no *dummie*!!
He figured out that da Bus Driver goes "hunting" and returns with
FOOD on round disks!
He sneaks out to check the "Hunting Grounds" (kitchen) almost
every time I sit down to "eat my kill" from a "disk". Thank doG
he's too "short" to get more than his nose over the counter edges.
He has the *idea* down pat ~ I *watched* him trying VERY hard to
stretch and reach a paw over the counter edge a while ago!
Right paw, left paw, a lil <jump> for a better look...
Hope the Other Two don't take "lessons" from him!!

And he's now <responding> when I call his name!!
Used to be when he disappeared, I'd have to go *FIND* him...
Now a gentle *Boooowser" will bring him on the trott to see
"Whut'z Up, Boss?" == **PROGRESS** :D

Brought back memories of how we used to do things prior to getting *the fence*. Speaking of which, maybe time to fence in a portion of the Ranch.

I think Bowser is getting some valuable socialization skills staying at the ranch.

I *watched* him trying VERY hard to
stretch and reach a paw over the counter edge a while ago!
Right paw, left paw, a lil <jump> for a better look...

Hannah says that if'n there's something on napkin on the table, all you has to do is get your paw on the edge of the napkin. Then
ease that over the edge and the whole sandwich is yours for the eat'n.

:D I just knew that being with you and your crew would be a good thing for Bowser. He's never had much of a family life before, seems like. It takes time to learn the ropes but he seems to be doing great.

I'm so glad he's learned to love his treeties now and even how to 'play'. :D Just wonderful news. :D

I know Bowzie is 'fishily a "foster" child, but.....but.....but.....the starz are still aligning...... ;)

Sounds like things are going great and Bowser is really fittin' in well. Even da Kat is relaxin' a bit. :D

Smokey, remind me to give you an extree treat next time I see you for being such a good Bowzie-sitter. ;) :D

They're *phunn to watch*!! :D

Poor "Shorty" Bowser has to take TWICE as many
"steps" as Smokey, just to keep up! :p

And when they try to go in oppsite directions -
the result is Both Spinning like a Pin-Wheel and going NOwhere!

TRIED that - (photos)...

I bundled up an followed em out this afternoon,
camera in hand...

WHERE'D they GO??
Paw-Printz ALL over the yard.

I went "east"; they'd gone "west"!
After I went ALL the way around the house -
found em!
Sittin on the Veranda, backs to me,
*waitin* for the door to open!

I tried calling them back out in the yard...
Smoke <mumbled> sumpin like:
NUTZ to that!
"Modeling" izzint in my Dawggie Sittin/Eskort Kontract!
OPEN da Dang Door - It'z KOLD out here!!

After *watchin* the SmokeMutt + Bowser "team" in action a few times;
I'm having second thoughts about "Are they really *DOING* anything
while they're out there!??"

As soon as one of them <pauses> ...
his "Harness-Mate" tears past, the ropey tightens,
and whomever was about to "do sumpin" gets jerked off his feet! :p

Prolly gonna make "last call" a routine event -
Smoke on the loose to pick his spot,
and BowserBoy tethered to the Veranda so he can "do it" in peace!

And the Lil Kid seems totally *hooked* on TREETS, now!
Takes a treet to "lure" him DOWN the stairs to his 'partment -
and he WANTS it as soon as we get down there!

Goin UP-stairs - he runs on Auto-Pilot...
remove the stay-in-the-corner-by-your-bed chain,
and LookOUT -
Zip-ZOOOM! he's at the top of the stairs!! :D

/s/ Bowser Boy sez "HOWDIE to All"!!

I kind of wondered about that myself and if the leg liften is leg specific, the *buddy* might be in a precarious position of getting a bit damp in the process.

Sounds like everyone is doing so well!!!!!

I love the buddy system--we do it when we walk all 4 dogs, they have a Y thingie but mom or dad is attached to the other side. No matter who we link together, it's hilarious:)

I'm so glad Bowser likes treats now--he musta realized what he was missing!!!

Hugs to all at the ranch!!!!

No real risk of one "hozin" da udder wun down ~
our Y-Thingies are 5-6 feetz long from the center loop -
pups can be 10-12 feetz apart.

But Dad fears da Chief Sittin/Eskort Dawg (SmokeMutt) went "On Strike"
this mornin...

We all dashed offa porch towardz da pond;
but Smoke <jammed onna brakes> an didda long *pee* inna frunt yard;
headed down ta his favorite #2 Spot;
but suddenly turned around an headed back to da porch -
(Lil Bit Bowzie draggin along behind)!

Now it WAS purdy KOLD out; but Smoke usually spendz a
bit more tyme onna Outie than that.

Aftur we had Brunch, Smoke & me went out "loose" whilst Bowzie got
hooked to da cable tie onna veranda.
Smoke made a BEE-line to his #2 Spot an did-it wiffout da
normal run-around-in-cirkelz fur two minnitz thing furst.
He sed onna way back to da howze, "BOY did I hafta *GO*!"

I fear Dad is konsiderin "Rotatin da Staff"...
Wunder iffin da KAT wuld like da Eskort Job?
He dont get out much... :p

--------------------------------------------

Dont 'spoze Dad told ya bout "Loozin da Dawg" last nite ~
(He's a lil "barrass'd" bout it) ...

Dad'z playin puter, ALLua us are ketchinin Zzzzz's.
Dad looks unner da puter desk an spotz Smoke & me...

"Where's BOWSER!??"

<thump>

"BOWSER???"

<thump> <thump>

"BOOOOWSERRR!!!!!!"

<thump>-<THUMP] ~ <THUMPITY>-<THUMP!>

"Son-uva- ~ Where **IS** he!!???"
Spinz chair to jump up an FIND dat Mutt ...

Uhhh, Dad -- ya mite wanna *check out*
da source of all dat Tail <THUMPIN> ya hear ...

"Whut'z up?? ~ Gotta go *out*???"

<WaGGGG> ~ <WAGG> ~ Waggity-WAGG>!! Sez SmokeMutt.

"OK. <KLIPP> and Bowzie's reddy;
Oh CINDER, Dear; c'mere a minnit"... <KLIPPIE>!

 Why ME!??
Try da KAT!

He wuzzint 'buyin' it...
C'mone, Mutt - Letz see how you handle da SNOW Driftz!!

Truth be tole, he did da Snow purdy well!!
I wuz thinkin a quick trip inta da naybur's back yard mite
get me offa dis gig; but da lil Pest kept rite up!!
He <plowz snow> better than Skinnie duz!
An wiff dat *RUG* he wears, he dont wanna quit as quick az Smoke duz.

Smoke wandered bye an sed "FANKZ" fur takin ober!!
He hadda go do a *dubbel dump* ta finish unloadin -
Seemz he been neglectin dat since last nite accounta havin
ta *watch* da lil guy.
*Watch* him??? Nunbuddie sed nuffin bout *watchin* him!!

I'll load two of em onna Greyhound -
YOU can "pass da kookies" yourself!!

We're taking applications for Dawg Sitter / Escort - again!

MidNite Outtee rigged up...
SmokeMutt on his own...
Cinder on Point wiff Bowser his Wing-Man...

Off they go... "Stay Close, Kids" ...

Half hour later ~ a "KNOCK" onna door.

SmokeMutt's KOLD and wants IN!
 Where's the OTHER TWO!???

Whadda ya askin ME for!??
I got <fired> as Sitter / Eskort!! :p

"CINDER!! - BOWSER!! - COME!!"

<silence>

Can't find my snow boots... <skrew it>
C'mone, Smoke - FIND EM!!

No tracks toward the pond; up to the front yard...
Hmmmm, "Double Track" leading west towards the distant
naybur inna woods ...

"CINDER! - BOWSER! - COME!

Bowzie: "<YIPP> <YIPPITY-YIPP>"!!
Cinder: "<WHIIIIIne> <yip> <YAP-YAP>"!!

Bowser *sighted* runnin around & over a fallen tree...
"CINDER!!"
"<WHINNNNE> <yip> <yap>"
(from further up the tree line)...

CALM DOWN, Cin - I'm here!
"<WHINNNE> <pant> <paw> <tug><tug> <pull>"

Y-Thingy Rope <wound> around small tree 5-6 times;
Dawg attached;
rope leads to adjacent tree; wound aroud 4-5 times;
Dawg NOT attached.

<UN-Wind> panicky Big Dawg;
<Call> lil dawg... (who's <bouncing> around in the woods).

We head back home, picking up da "Scout" (SmokeMutt) who
thinks we're gonna PLAY - NOT!
Bowser runs across the road :eek: and parallels the front yard;
re-crosses and heads up the drive.
THANKFULLY Bowzie trotts in the garage, waits for the door
to open, and comes right in.
ALL "accounted for"!! ~ THANKS, God!!

A close examination of the Y=Thingy ROPE revealed:
Bowser "wearing" about 6" of rope; ending in a "clean cut"!
Mating end of his end had ANOTHER almost clean cut -
BOTH "cuts" about One Dawg-Mouth Apart...

Hmmmmm... "ROPE" only good to hold HIM while you're *watchin* him!
(Wonder how many times he's practiced the Rope Cut Trick!?)

SmokeMutt earned two Bisquits;
Certain Other Dawgs got *durty looks*!

We're runnin low on "Eskort Staff" :( ...
OK, KAT - you're Next Up!! :p

I wonder what they're <plotting> for TOMORROW??
