Firstly, Dad wuz feelin a "bit poorley" (*koffin* & *hackin*
wiffa Noze <runnin> like a fawcitt, an feelin kinda "week") -
so he prolly wuzzint inna best of moodz.
Then we hadda "fix" da kobby-webz an dustie/furr-bunniez
which took a while an mosta Dad'z fadin "energy".

OK... "CAST CALL!"
"GET *IN* Here - NOW!
ON da bed - NOW!!"

"Luvlee" Bedside manner, Dad!
Us 3 Big-Unz got up no sweat... da 2 LIL wunz needed a "boost" -
which uppyset da 3 Big-Unz an resulted in us jumpin OFF!
Datz bout wen he started <klippin> 2 an 3-way Y-Thingies on!

So we had a Dawg Toss fur a lil while till Dad had us all
"arranged" like he wanted.

"Now *SMILE*, dang-it! Ears UP!!
Oh, NUTZ!!! ... Where's the *@!#$&#@* CAMERA!??"

Yur askin US where YUR Kamera iz??

Whilst Dad wuz off <findin> da kamera,
da "Kast" quicklee <exited> da Big Bed!!

:eek: "Get back UP there!! - NOW!!"

Anudder 2-3 minnitz of Dawg Tossin wuz required to
return da "Kast" to their propur locations.

Yeah, he getz a lil <grumpy> when he'z not feelin too gud.

Special thanks to Boots for going above and beyond the expectations any Kat should have to contribute. Poor Dad, didn't know we were going to propel him into the role of Cecil B. dePhred when he should have been the one in the bed (sick bed, that is). The pictures are delightful but knowing the *rest of the story* was a hoot. We do feel a bit :o for having generated the need for the imprompto "fixing of" da kobby-webz an dustie/furr-bunniez. Shoot a few more critters in the pictures wouldn't have made a bit of difference.

Aren't we all, although the talk about finding Bowser a forever home has been strangely absent. Is there any behind the scenes searching going on or has Bowser wormed his way too deeply into someone's heart and bed?

I am posting this here as it will reach a lot more people who check this thread that don't normally check in other places.

Just wanted to ask everyone to keep Zippy's Grandpa in your prayers and thoughts. This is Bowser's orginal dad.
He has renal failure. And 6% of his kidneys working, had 3 dialysis treatments, refused any more because the doctor wanted him to
1) go into a nursing home and have daily treatments there
2) have someone come into the home and dialysis would be done while he slept at night
3) drive 3-4 hour (one way), 3x a wk to a hosp. and have it done
He's 94 (will be 95 in nov) and still lives by himself, he has had to sign some sort of something indicating he refused further treatment BUT he's looking for a new doc. because he doesn't think "this guy knows what he's talking about."
He has had problems with his kidneys (only 15% working) and they were able to control it thru medicine - But now apparently dialysis is the only option.
The whole family needs to be in our thoughts and prayers.

I have to ask, if not a visit in person from the Bowser Boy perhaps a printout of the Bowser Tale (as it were :rolleyes: ) with color photos included? I could probably arrange that and drive it over one weekend SOON. A somewhat long drive but I'm sure I could wrangle up a PT'er (E-The-Spoiled/Cheryl or someone) to help with the ride. Whatcha thunk Tonya and Phred et al? "GrandPaw", I love that :)

I'm in tears... you guys are so kind and gracious and generous... I love you all!!

As I was telling Phred in an email, I'm not 100% sure a visit is do-able right now. It's a bit too lengthy and too personal to post here on the board but I will email you later tonight, Laurie. :)

Pappaw is aware of Bowser's plight and we've sent him pictures from time to time but I think you're right! He needs to read everything! :D I'll sit down and print out everything tonight. (Suppose to be working on a term paper and here I am perusing the board. lol)

We haven't gotten *lost* - just a lil *Bizzie*! :p

Bowser is Alive, WELL, and HAPPIE!!
He's fully "adjusted" to Life as an IN-Howze Dawggie and is now
the Most-Velcro of the <don't let Dad out of your sight> Gang!
(Cinder & Smokey never get TOO Worried when I visit the Baffroom ...
BOWZER, on the other hand, is CONVINCED there's a Secret Back Door
leading out of the Baffroom - and he's ALWAYS in there WITH me to
make SURE I don't <escape> through it!) :rolleyes:

When we go for *hikes* in the BigLake Parks, he manages to keep up
with the Big Mutts even though he has to take TWICE as many *steps*
as they do to cover the same amount of ground. :p
Sharing Smokey's Glocosamine Tablets seems to have "loosened up"
his joints and he "walks & trotts" without so much stiffness now.

If you saw the Mutt Show and the Spring Fling at Findlay photos -
he "Fits Rite In" with all the 4-Leggers and seems to *enjoy* romping
and playing with most ANY other Dawgs. And he's not the Least Bit
Timid about walking up to ANY 2-Legger for a skritch and cuddle!

Our next Big Project is the future Visit wiff Dad (aka GranPaw)
back in West Virginnie.
Zippy is working on arranging some extra "Help" from his Care-Givers
for the Visit; and we need a break in the weather since Bowser
is NOT permitted inside Dad's 'Partment and we have to "Visit"
outside on the Patio or across the street in a little River-Side Park.
A few *Purrayers for Success* of this project will be appreciated!

I'm sure by the time the really hot weather hits us he will be looking a little happier to end up being a soggy doggy ;) Just don't tell him it's excersize I know swimming is better for my achy bones than jogging... that's fur dern shur ;)

I've missed Bowzie tails too! Phred, there is an easier way to teach the sit command without pushing on the dogs rump. Try this...

Induce the sit by holding a tidbit between your index and middle finger in front of Bowsers nose. Slowly move it above and behind his head (just above his head - not too high), luring him into a sit position. Click (if you use clicker training) or praise and immediately reinforce him with the tidbit when he sits.

Repeat this several times until he sits smoothly and quickly when lured into position. Then, start giving the sit command just prior to inducing the sit. I always shape the behavior before putting a verbal command to it. It's less confusing to the dog.

Keep those Bowzie stories coming! :D

When he was REALLY little (probably a month after they got him), I tried to teach him to "say his prayers" (from a sit put his front feet on the porch steps, and duck his head between his front paws). Out of 1000 tries, how many times did he do it unassisted? ONCE!

Knowing that Bowser and I are in relatively the same age bracket, I'm thinking that the reluctance to *sit* may not be so much being obstinate as maybe a case of certain parts not bending as easily as they should any more. (Ahhem, seems like Dad would know a bit about that sort of thing too.) Maybe all those treats could be used to perfect *stay* and *come*.

Excellent point Rachel. My good ol' boy Badger is getting up there as well and has a very hard time with "sit" even though he's always been the first to listen and please. He simply has problems getting the old bones and joints to listen to his ears these days :(

It's a favorite position when he desires a "pat onna head" and I'm
at the puter - he'll walk up beside the chair and just <SIT>,
then give me an "elbow bump" to tell me he's arrived.

The word <SIT> seems to have no meaning - he IS <focused> on
Cinder & Smoke getting Their Bisquits, and focuses his attention
upon the THIRD Bisquit quite intently!

As previously reported, passing the Bisquit up to and then over his
nose and head usually produces a neck-bending exercise where he
displays his neck & head FLEXIBILITY; the rear end remaining in the
UPright posture!

What DOES Work is to <pass> the Bisquit up & over ONE time, ~
then "CIRCLE & HOVER" the Bisquit OVER his head!

He seems to realize the sought-after treat IS "UP There" (somewhere)
and tries to flip-flop his head to focus in on it -
difficult with a fast-moving, circling target! ... His "solution" ??

He just leans back on his haunches and <*PLOPS*> back into a <SIT> -
which opens up more of the "sky" and brings the Circling Bisquit
back into view!

<COME> ??
He <COMES> when it's OK with HIM! - Meals, treats, attention, etc.

He <GOES> when he feels like it! ... Bisquit-in-hand or not; when
HE decides to explore or just go-the-other-way -
a Busquit isn't enough to turn him around! :p

<STAY> ??
Needs sum werk!
We're actually werkin on <WAIT> at doors ...
He tries to be FURST Out rather than in his assigned #3 position
behind #2, SmokeMutt.

He barges to the front of the line and jams his head out as soon as
the door is cracked.
A gentle closing of the door results in his head out, and shoulders
jammed up in the too-narrow opening.
After he quits <pushing> forward and has to stand trapped for a few
seconds, he's more than willing to <Back Up> and let Cinder go.

He HAS "caught on" to a LOT of the Howze Rules ...

He's #3 in the Chow Line; and DON'T stick yur head into #1 or #2's BOWLS!

DON'T LAY close behind da Bus Driver's puter chair - he backs up often
and there's NO Back-Up Alarm on the darn thing!

Fire Calls - Stay OUTTA da Way!!
Cinder & Smokey can recognise "OUR" Fire Alert Tones on the radios -
When they hear "OUR" tones, they both move away from shoes, clothes,
and the basement door; and KNOW they aren't "going"!
Bowsie can't tell the difference between "OUR" tones and the other
Departments' tones - but he HAS started to <move> when he hears
ANY tones on the fire radios!

DON'T *MESS* wiffa Black KAT!!
Probably comes from his years with MidNight, but he has NEVER
done anything to <bother> Boots! (Other than just BEING here!)
Bowz hardly <looks> at Boots if the pass in the house; and Boots now
"allows" him to enter the Baffroom without even a (silent) "Hisss!"

Nail Trimming ??
NOT a problem with Bowz!
The "other" members of The Gang should be half as good as he is!

His HEARING ??
I think it works just FINE! - Very "SELECTIVE" - but always "operational"!
He comes out of a SOUND sleep at the sounds of:

* The Krunchie Can storage closet opening

:o Actually it was Mom Rachel who did that post. Hannah, like Bowser, seems to be much more flexible in this *age bracket* than her mom is.

Good on Bowser for fitting in so well. Those *life style choices* may take a little while to change up some. Like Hannah, Bowser seems to be self directed. (Actually I wouldn't want her any other way.)

which opens up more of the "sky" and brings the Circling Bisquit
back into view!

:D The modified Candy method! :D I've never had an official method named after me before. :cool:

Ya know what I say, Phred.... If it works, use it! ;) Fortunately, in dog training, there is no one way fits all. It's the INTELLIGENT owner who can modify a basic method and make it work for their dog! :) Sounds like you did that flawlessly. :cool:

The main reason I don't put a verbal command to a behavior until a hand motion is taught is for the reason you stated... The word <SIT> seems to have no meaning. Repetition is the key! After the behavior is shaped, then a word is associated with it. A few <THOUSAND> more "modified Candy methods" and I'd say Bowser Boy will have it down <PAT>! ;)

Bowser, Sadie and Cincy are quite jealous...they got to stand around int he kiddie pool at home (well, Sadie lays down and enjoys the water!). Spot is our dry-land boy. He definately does not like to swim!!!

It must be a bit tough trying to live up to the standards of those athletic types like Cinder and Smoke. I guess hunting is more your thing, huh? Somehow doesn't seem like the head honcho appreciates those activities on your part. Well, anyway I'm glad to hear that you did your part in going along with the game plan on the recent outing.

I hope this weekend will find you having some special activities as well. Keep your eyes pealed for a Dairy Queen and make a special request for da bus to pull in there. Tell the bus driver you know someone who will glady reimburse for treats all around.
