A Plea for HELP!!

The picture at the long hike just had me laughing .I now know how I must look having 2 newfys on a brace lead 6" (y Thingy) on one lead (about 200lbs of black dog. and on the outside on a 2nd leash a 60lb springer. I'm a 5'2" 160lb woman. People really stare at me know I know why. Mine are really good about the walk Dugan (the new guy) is slowly getting the idea .

My heart just melts for the guy and I SO wish I could adopt him. Oh, it so nice to see Bowser with friends. He must have been so loney where he was...i am so happy he has buddies now!!! You have certainly helped to turn that boys life around...yeah Phred!!

It reminds me of when Sasvermont took in my cat Gabe, for me. He wasn't fit to live with small children, and she would agree to that. And he was always an "only cat" when he lived with me. When she used to post pics of him with Graemer and Miley, it used to make me so happy to see him with friends. Although, they can't really talk to us and tell us how happy they are on the inside...it just makes it so nice to see the pics and the obvious fact that he is happy to be with a great human and 2 new found fur friends!! Thanks Phred!! Bowser is surrounded with some much deserved love!!

Once upon a time I only had one cat. Her name was Lucy. She was getting up in years when I adopted Leroy. The vet said it was the best thing I could have done for her. By the time she went to the RB, she had 3 siblings. She lived to be almost 17.
The vet swore the "youngsters" kept her young and healthy longer by trying to keep up with them.

I'm sure that you will do the best for Bowsie, no matter what.
Just think how quiet and lonesome the house will be without him now though. ;) (no pressure though, just a thought):D

I know one thing and that is Bowser is getting just what he needs to make him a shining star. His learning the ropes and interacting with the others is just the ticket to being physically and mentally at his best for when that forever family can be found. It is amazing how well he has done this far.

Rachel~ Yes, i believe it came from Scooby doo...that is how he said "uh-oh", and also the dog on the Jetson's cartoon, i think used to say it that way. :)

I have to agree!! There is another pup you may have heard of, named Oreo. When she was about 8 or 9, she seemed to be nearing the end of her time here. She limped a lot (esp in the cold) and was a unactive pup. The, when she was about 10 or 11 another pup started spending some time there. His name was Trent, and he was a rowdy pupppy, that found a home with kids to chase him. Then another pup came to live with Oreo, and her name was Dazzi. Oreo seemed to loose years off her life. Soon there came more...Taggert, Snoopy, Jack and recently, Pippi. Oreo is now 15+ years and is running and playingmore then ever. Sure she still has her bad days, and the hearing and sight and bladder control are all going, but none of us would have thought 7 years ago, Oreo was only at middle (age one 1/3 of her life? WHo knows?) Anyway, I'm sure it was theother dogs, that helped her feel young again.

Of course, we would not pressure you at all, and since you see Bowser day in and out, you know what is best for him...much more then any of us ever could. I'm sure where ever his forever homeis, it will be perfect!

I don't know how other states are, but in Ohio the dog need both a rabies tag, and a dog license. The licenses are usually kept track of by the county auditor and the reasons are two fold (best as I can tell). First, if the dog warden finds your dog, it lets them know who it belongs and is supposed to help get them returned to you faster. Second, at least in our county, it is a fund raiser for the county...a way to get more money for the government. I know in Toledo is about the most expensive at least in NW Ohio...we pay $20/dog each year to register them.

How do they know how many dogs you have and how do they enforce that you tag 'em? Is it more or less on the honor system? Do the vets report "who has what" to them?

Do the dogs in shelters/pounds have to wear them too or are they under a special 'no tag' rule?

Is the dog warden different from the the pound? (I guess what I'm asking is, does the dog warden work for the pound?) Do they enforce this rule for cats too? Does the pound even take cats?

Sorry for so many questions. :o

I know that one dog is a big responsibility; we've never had more than one dog at a time, so I'm just guessing that three has to be triple the "work" ... especially since one's just now learnin' House Dog 101.

zippy- kat Where I live in Ohio no one knows how many dogs you have, they,get this, come door to door looking for dogs. No one has come to my house in years but they used to. Of course I'm on dayturn now so I may miss them. If your dog doesn't bark when they knock on the door then they figure you don't have a dog. If it does they leave a notice to call in your license number. If they catch you without a tag and it's past the date to get them you have to pay double, that's the fine. Mine just cost me $12.75 per dog.
I don't think dogs in shelters have to have them, both of my dogs came from a shelter and they got their tags before they left.

They DO make "random visits" to "check" - usually after someone
complains about unlicensed or loose dogs.
If "caught" - ya either buy a Tag/License on the spot (for DOUBLE
the normal $15 fee) or Fido takes a ride in the Mobile Jail. :eek:

Most dogs are IN jail because the have no tags and an Owner cannot
be identified. Their time is short to be either claimed or adopted. :(

County Dog WARDEN is appointed by the (elected) County Commissioners and
is a well-paid, salried position here. Has several employees; a newer,
clean Office/Garage/Jail building (The POUND);
a small fleet of "Mobile Jails";
and is under the Public Eye enough to ensure that dogs are well treated.

Cinder & Smokey had a "run in" with one of the Ketcher Guyz JUST
after SmokeMutt came to the Ranch...
They broke their tie-out ropey at the Shop and "took a hike" into
town - and snarled themselves up on someone's porch and got reported.
Dawg Ketcher and a good Fire Buddy arrived at the same instant...
Buddy calle ME; Ketcher called in Cinder's TAG for an ID check.
They were released to me without penalty other than a "strong HINT"
to get SmokeMutt his OWN "Tag" - he was wearing Cinder's previous year
license plate - a fact not missed by the Ketcher Guy! :o

(It also "helps" when I take a couple big bags of Dawggie Bisquits into
the Jail every Christmas when I buy their Tags...
I go at "quittin tyme" so most of the Ketcher Guyz are hangin
in the Office and get to put a Face with a name.) ;)

How MUCH wadder iz dat? ~~ 1,486 cfs is the same as:
11,000 Gallons per SECOND or
664,000 Gallons per MINUTE or
46 TONS of water per SECOND or
2,800 TONS of water per MINUTE! ~~ wow!

At that 1,486 cfs Flow Rate, the Level of Berlin Lake
should DROP by 11 Inches over a 24 hour period.

The Corps of Engineers "stored" the water that fell as RAIN two
weeks ago to prevent major flooding in the communities "below" the Dam.
There WAS some flooding along the Mahoning River - but a lot LESS than
there would have been without the Dam to reduce the river's flow!!
NOW the Corps must "dump" the Lake into the river to lower the "pool" (level)
of Berlin Lake to "make room" for the melting snow and Spring rains.

Here you can see the "outflow" from THREE of the huge "Tainter Gates"
that are partially open and allow water to flow over the TOP of
the Spillway and rush down the back side of the dam;
and the outflow through the Dual "Ring Jets" (they work like a
garden hose nozzle) that discharge their water via 3 foot diameter
pipes that run through the dam.

What a great day you all had on your road trip! It's great you can hook all of them up together and let them run! (I wonder what would happen if I did that with all six of mine - maybe 3 + 3???? - they would probably go nowhere because they wouldn't agree on which direction to go in) - and know they will come back.

Bowser looks like he is settling in real nice. You have to be careful fostering dogs - they have a way of worming there way into your heart not just your home!

Just had to add my thanks for reporting in on the Tailz and Trailz Road Trip (including pictures). Seems like another good time was had by all. My two have their noses out of joint because they now think they live a deprived life compared to the kids at the Ranch. Maybe Dad should consider starting a summer camp for fur kids.

Candy, this is a fund raiser for our Humane Society, and part of the Great American Mutt Show. It designed specially for the unregistered, mixed breed dogs, and fun games for the purebreds as well....all dogs are welcome!!

Looks like you all had a wunnerful time. I think Bowzie is in doggy heaven. He's got two great playmates/leaders/tow vehicles (since he usually seems to bring up the rear ;) ), he's got a nice warm bed to sleep in, even if it does have a cat jumping up and waking him up now and then, he demands and gets treats, and I'm sure he's getting more lovin' than he's gotten since Grandpa went to the home. He looks happy in the pictures and that is just so wunnerful. :D

"Park" area) is *nice* - clean and usually quiet at night (NO Booze
allowed to be "visible"); big drawback is there isn't really
very much to "DO" in the immediate vicinity. :(

As for Bowsie... He sure "TRIES" to keep up with the Other Two...
but those durn short Legs! :(

Gotta give him credit - he HAS started to catch on about the
ROPE and Y-Thingy - he's become more observant and pays attention to
WHICH side of trees, sign posts and guardrails the Other Two passed on. :)

:D Now don't you go bad mouthin us with short legs! As one who is vertically challenged myself, I can tell you our legs are just fine. As long as they reach the ground, they are long enough! It may take us a little longer to get where we are goin but that gives us more time to enjoy the scenery! ;)

I will be ordering periodically for our Therapy Dog group and can post something each time I do to see if anyone inthe area needs anything. I got a lot of Christmas presents there this year...and although I made the $50, it was reasonable for all the dogs I was buying for!!

I must be one of the blindest people at Pet Talk to just now realize this thread's existance :o :o :o. I have got to make a habit of checking out other sections of the board more often. In the dog girl/boy thread, I saw Phred list 2 boys and a girl, and I knew then I had missed something! :o.

I've read about half of the posts and realized I must get back to work for now and read the rest later, but I was enthralled and enchanted and misty eyed through the first half. Phred you are a true wonder and inspiration. Those words are pitifully inadequate but the best I can do to describe my feelings!

Phred, must be the wierd, foggy wheather we've been having
over the Ohio Valley lately. It must bring out the "hunter" in all
the doggies. Smokey & Maggie both were acting very strange
last night & wouldn't come in after their last outtie last night.

It got to be 11pm & momma was very tired & ready for bed. I
tried every thing imaginable & still they wouldn't come in. Ended
up putting on shoes, heavy coat, grabbing two leashes & chasing
them around the back yard for 30 mins before I managed to
catch first one & then the other & dragged them inside.:rolleyes:

Needless to say, NO PUPS got treats last night.:mad:

Looks like everyone had a great time, Phred. :D I was wondering though....it would seem to make sense to have one collar with 3 hook-ups on it, one hook up for the leash, and one hook up on either side for the other doggies...if you know what I mean. Then one doggie in the middle gets that collar, and the other two have their own collars clipped to the one in the middle...so they go in a row instead of in a y.

There's an "Option" you can change in "User CP"
that might help to "Speed things UP" for you...

The TIME required to load a Thread onto your puter is a function
of MANY factors - one of which you can easily change to see
if it helps.

No matter How Many individual "Posts" there are in a thread;
YOUR puter only loads "some" of those posts...
5, 10, 20, 30, or 40 posts - AS Selected by YOU.

The more posts you choose to see on a page, the LONGER it takes
to load the page. And if there are some photos, or large Siggys on
those pages - it can take "quite a while" :rolleyes: "load" that page!

To check and/or CHANGE you setting - go to >>>
"user cp" - click that button just under the Top Banner

Next *click* on "Edit Options" and scroll down to:
"Default Posts per Thread" and LOOK to see what's showing
in the lil window.

If it says "Default" or 20, or 30, or :eek: 40 posts per page...
Ya mite wanna try CHANGING it!!

I suggest you try "10 posts / page".
After you select your new setting,
you MUST scroll on down and click the
"Submit Modifications" button at the bottom to have the
change take effect.

*I* have mine set for "10 posts per page" -
a workable number for my "not-so-swift" puter and Dial-Up modem.

For this 400+ post THREAD about da Bowz;
IF you're set on "20 posts / page" - you're loading 1/20 of
the thread each time you visit.
CHANGE your setting to "10 posts / page" and you only load 1/40th
of all the posts. It WILL load *quicker*! ;)

And *I* personally *like* the continuity of the Loooonger Tails -
it's ALL there under ONE Thread Title...
no <wondering> :confused: if you've :eek: "Missed" a portion
of the Tail somewhere if you don't check it every day.

I think our computers are related. Mine is an old "not-so-swift" puter and Dial-Up modem too.

I had mine set on default and it took forever to load on some threads. Usually on pages that have blinkies and stuff. I changed it to 10.

I sort of like having the "tails of Bowzie" in one thread. I might miss one if there are more than one thread. If you do start a new thread, please leave us a map here so we can find it.

ps: it does load faster!!!!:D

I often become aware that "we're about to be <passed>" when I

the LOooong length of rope tween ME and the Dawgs!!

I envision a mind rapidly calculating =

If the same Jogger/Biker passes us a second or third time -
I notice the "off course" deviations become less and less! :D

Thankfully MOST *fast* runners WITH a Doggie Partner call out
"On your LEFT!" as they approach to pass -
gives us "slow folk" a chance to <reel in> our Scout Team and
move to the edge of the path.
All the Dawggies we *meet* seem mellow & friendly!

But the "W:cool:W! THREE Dawgs!" *LOOKS* are priceless!

Follow Phred's instructions to get to "Thread View Options"
The first option is "Show user's signature in their posts?" Check NO.
I didn't know about changing the number of posts per page, but if you need a little more speed, try no sigs, too.

that "NO Fly" Label on there to prevent this box
from getting ON an airplane; OR when it got taken OFF
an airplane because of a "problem".

Reads "Consumer Quantity" + "ORM-D" + "ORM-D-AIR"
All "shorthand" for saying the box once-upon-a-time carried
"stuff" that can't FLY without a Haz-Mat Shipping Document.

We looked a lil closer...
And decided The Box was a retired "Avon Cosmetics" carton.

LOOK! Somebody knew "Some of the Tricks" with
these old Avon boxes - they completely COVERED ALL the Big-Print
"AVON" imprints {SEVEN of em!) with paper labels.
And "tried" to cover the Haz-Mat placards printing with a magic marker!
Musta been a real Eagle-Eye Aviation Safety "Spotter"
that read those old Haz-Mat Placard imprints!

Then she went on to explain WHY she knew EXACTLY what happened...

Christmas gifts to my daughter - took TWO WEEKS to get to California! :mad:
Daughter complained to her Postmaster who did a review and

The Ranch definitely needs a fence round it. Maybe Dad could start putting some coins in a coffee can to start saving. You never know when a PTer might want to pitch some in. I'm thinking that with Dad being such a good foster parent, even after Bowser finds his forever home, there may be another time when a stray pup could use the training and attention you kids get at the Ranch. These dark-thirty hunting for loose puppers treks are taking years off Dad's life and I'm thinking his Promises to God list is accruing a bunch of interest.

Smoke, bless your heart for being the Gud Child and helping Dad to locate the lost souls. I'm saying a Thank You, God, prayer myself for the safe return of Bowser and Cins.

They are "paw wipers". When the puppers come in with muddy paws, Phred puts one hand in each side and wipes each paw clean. Get it?? ;)

I had been checking in this thread now and then, but only tonight committed to sitting down and reading the WHOLE thing as I came into it a little late, so it's only fair to comment now. What a great story! "Phred" is of course the main hero, and you deserve many thanks over, but many more of you should be proud. I had nothing whatsoever to do with this rescue, but I must say as a fairly new "joinee" that I am even happier now than I was to have joined such a great group of people (on Pet Talk). Cinder & Smoke have "met" Zig several times at Pat's Howze -
After some initial "Grrrrin" everyone has <mellowed out>
and they all seem friendly to one another.
I told Leslie we'd all meet tonight up at Pat's (semi-neutral territory).

"WE" got there first.
I even brought BC Kat "up" from his hidey-hole in the basement to
calm his fears - he acted :cool: with Cinder, SmokeMutt and da Bowz.

Cinder acted "un-happie" but did finally <mellow> when Zig let it
be known the he just wanted to PLAY - and he didn't care with WHO!

Bowser did his best to not get <trampled>.

After the *ruff & tumble* died down...

from BC - who then felt comfortable enough to <amble around>
the kitchen at will! ;)

Cinder & Smoke shared a Y-Thingy with no leash;
Bowser & Cali shared a Y-Thingy WITH a leash;
Zig went solo on a leash...

but no Furr Flew!

Cali gets a boost up with Bowser struggling to get in as

(Possibly because no one in the back seat could <BREATHE> ) - but
we made it without incident!! :D

The HERD made it through the basement an up the stairs with
no major injuries or ruffled fur.

Zig made the mistake of <hikin> a leg to mark a box of grocery bags -
<FOILED> by a quick *BUTT SMACK* and the loudest "NO! BAD Dog!!"
he's prolly EVER heard.

with Zig in close attendance to drive home the point that
da KAT <LIVES HERE> and is NOT a chase toy!

HOPEfully everyone will <settle in> - SO Far the only

Oh Phred you are just amazing! I find it hard handling the three I have sometimes and look at you. You go from a 1 cat & 2 dog dad to a 1 cat & 5 dog dad:eek:

By far, this one is my favorite; it makes my heart melt!
(Miss Kissiekat wants to know why a d-o-g has her momma in (happy) tears. She prefers the Bootz-style for dawgie "affection.")

He looks so spiffy in that bandanna. I think yellow's def. his color. :)
