Roxy graced us with 12 baby bundles of joy this morning. The babies are doing wonderful! She was a couple of days early but the babies are nice and healthy. She is a PERFECT mother!!! I can't explain how wonderful she is. Her babies are so clean, with nice fat milk bellies. She doesn't care at all if I handle them and was proud enough to offer me one to hold LOL. Her personality during this pregnancy and her caring nature with her babies makes me love her ever so much more! She hasn't even thought of nipping me. She is awesome!!! :D
I didn't check the sexes yet. Well I did some but didn't count them all. :p Most are boys though. Most look like they will be beige, but there are some dark eyes in there as well so I am keeping my fingers crossed I get a blue! Even better a blue odd eye. Two appear to be dumbo but I'm not sure as of yet.
Well here are the photos. I will be posting photos of them day by day like I do with all my litters. I am so excited! I haven't had a litter for almost a year! LOL. I got up this morning and I swear, I was on a high for hours! All my friends must think I'm crazy. :p
These two were both boys.

you can hold rat babies whe they are that young, just not hamster babies. Hamster do canniblise(sp?) very often.

Yes, Hamsters will cannibalize their young, but only if they feel that there are too many pups (baby hamsters) for them to handle, if there is something wrong with some or all of the pups, or if she feels threatened or can't protect the babies well enough, or if she feels there is not addequite food and water.
The babies are precious by the way. I can't wait til I move out so I can get rats. I know several people who breed rats. I think hamsters are something I will always have though.

I've changed my mind. I wrote a few months ago that I will begin breeding again. I already have rats on hold from various breeders around the NW. ;) This time though I will be keeping almost every baby I produce, instead of selling to the general public. Yes Roxy is a petstore rat, however she comes from a local breeder I know very well who takes excellent care of her stock, and is also related to my first odd eyed rat named Roxy who was pet of the day. You can see her page here:
http://petoftheday.com/archive/2003/February/28.html
Because Roxy the first lived such a long healthy life and produced beautiful healthy, typey litters and had such a wonderful personality I decided to breed from a descendent of hers. This Roxy has the same promising personality traits that run in the line. It is by far the best line that came out of my Rattery. The line never produced any megacolon either. As far as petstore breeding I am against it for the most part. As long as the person has experience with breeding and is familiar with genetic diseases, certain illnesses and has at least knowledge of some of the background of the rat then it's not so bad. The only rats available at this petshop are rats from breeders I know. All of them are very well cared for, and I can get any history I want on them. I know all I need to know already for Roxy. Now I don't agree with just anyone getting two feeder rats, plopping them in a tank and making babies. ;) Plus here in the NW, some of the only ways to strengthen the lines we have has been to introduce pet store stock. Granted, not ALL petstore stock is great, but when working with local honest breeders who supply petstores your chances of success are far greater. The breeder just needs to be aware that they are taking a chance, and must be prepared to keep 100% records of all babies, every detail of the litter etc, which is what I'll be doing. :)
As far as the father, it isn't Nemesis. I don't breed from rats such as him, meaning I have no way of knowing his history at all. He's just a feeder rat. A very cute feeder rat. :p Plus he's extremely young. Way too young for a male to breed. There would be no way right now to tell if he had agression issues, as he is only 6 months old. I used a buck from a past breeding a did, who went to live with a friend. Hence the reason I may be expecting blues. :D

I did a sex count and I have 7 girls!!! That is a lot of girls for a litter. Only 5 boys. They are all so adorable! OK I will stop babbling now and post the pics. ENJOY!

I can't believe how fast these little ones are growing. Their ears are starting to pop up now. It's so cute! Markings are clearly visible on the darker babies. It appears that we have two blacks, and two blues. The rest I will have to wait and see. I could have platinums and beiges.
Keeper's markings are very nice! He is a beautiful cap stripe and has a nice blaze. I am very excited to have a blazed baby in this litter.
I'll post pics of Keeper and the dark babies first. Then I will post the lighter babies. I do not know what markings they will be yet, as I need to wait until their fur comes in due to their light skin pigmentation. I can't believe how fat some of these guys are. The runties are doing really well too, and boy do they have some energy already! One of the light ones was already crawling around everywhere LOL. :D

These guys are such cuties!!! I am definitely keeping two of them. The Dalmation female (show quality markings!) and the blazed cap stripe. I definitely have a blue...the other looks like a platinum maybe? Though he may be a blue as well. The blue blazed baby might be a keeper as well. We will see. Their fur is now growing. In just a few days they will be furry and oh so much cuter! It's hard to think they can get any cuter than this.

Cass, I have to tell you about the dream I had last night. First of all you might remember that back in the summer I was thinking about getting a pair of female rats. I have never owned rats, but I had gerbils and mice all the time when I was younger. I used to raise baby gerbils and mice. Anyway, when I went home last night I looked up breeders in my area because looking at your babies made me think I still might want some rats :D. After that I went to bed. I had a dream that I went to the breeder and I got a pair and took them home in a box. As I was setting up their cage the female had babies. I swear it seemed so real, it was really weird. I actually woke up thinking that I had to check on the babies :p . Just thought I'd share since it was your babies that sparked my imagination :D
luckies4me, what are you gonna do with the babies you don't keep? are you gonna sell them?

I'm definitely playing with the idea. The problem is I would have to get rid of my fish. I don't like the idea of re-homing pets, even fish and I have never done it. The problem is one of my fish is picking on the other two (there are only three) So I think I have to re-home the big guy. I don't want to re-home the other two, but there is another problem. They are in a 55 gallon tank and they will eventually need a 100 gallon tank (it might be a few more years) There is no way to fit a tank that size in my house right now. I really don't know what to do. The thought of all this is really bothering me, enough of that rambling though. If I do decide to re-home the fish, there is a very high chance I will be visiting a rat breeder :p unless you live close enough to me ;)

oh I want a rattie again. I love rats soooo much. My first rat was named Tar. I bought her at a pet shop for my brirthday one yeah I was a lot younger. She was black and white I miss my ratties sooo much anyways a week after we got her she gave birth and it was soooo amazing we kept all the females in the litter, and placed the males in homes. My next rat was a male name chief he was all beige he wasn't as friendly as my first babies, but I lived him all the same. Then we had Sydney an older male we adopted cuz the owners were moving and didn't want him anymore so they decided to put him to sleep and I ended up with him. He only lived with us a few months he was really old when we got him. Now I think I'm ready for a new baby. I've been looking at them since thanksgiving now. I want either a blue or an all black with a white belly. To bad you don't live in canada Cass.. :(

How old are the babies now? They should be at least 5 weeks old before going to new homes. 4 weeks at the youngest, and I usually let them depart at 6 weeks.
Right now they are 10 days I think she said. So they will be about 5 weeks. If she lets me have one:D
