Im finally back, with pictures of bennie of course!

Bennie is doing really great.. Im already attached to him, and I've only had him a few days. Having a bird is SO different from having a dog or a cat... Everytime I leave the room, that bennie is in, I hear *SCREECH, SCREECH* telling me that I forgot him. Birds are much more dependent. Bennie has learned to whistle, im not sure if he already knew or not but he does it every once and a while.

BTW- These pictures were taken back in Tennessee, :)

:D

HI BENNIE!!!! Amber, he looks SO happy!!! What a cutie pie!!! I love it when my birds scream when I leave them 'alone' in a room. It makes me feel loved. :p They do that when they want you back.

I'm so glad to see Bennie all happy in his new forever home. I know Logan will be thrilled to see this. Congrats Amber! Thanks for the wonderful pictures! You know we'll want to see pictures very often. ;)

How exciting! I'm so happy that I will get to see more Bennie pics! BTW, I know that Logan will be answering any questions you might have, but if you need to you can PM me or use my AIM name Princessdi127 I have 4 tiels and I have had Alex since she was a baby eight years ago. I'm still learning myself because there is ALWAYS something to learn about these little guys, but I could help you too. :) Also, are you sure Bennie is a boy? His orange patches don't look as dark as my boy's patches are.

Is he already letting you scratch his head, Amber? Wow!!! :D :D :D How does he like his new cage?

Someone asked about the girl/boy thing....Bennie does not have as bright of cheeks as Roger, but he also doesn't have the bars on his tail that are typical of females. It is a tossup and Amber knows that. My vet and I just decided to say "he" because of the bar thing. The other two were much more decidedly girls. If he lays an egg, then you know you don't have a boy! LOL!!!!

Love the pictures. Keep on telling me all about him, please!!! :)

Yep! He'll nibble at my finger and hold his head down waiting then when I move my finger away he'll nibble again, wanting me to scratch his head again. At first, he REALLY didn't like me touching his head/back. By the second day, he leaned his head down and let me pet him, but he was still pretty insistent with me going any further than his neck. But now, he let's me pet him with no problem. I even managed to kiss his little head today! :D

And, he LOVES his cage. He was exploring it last night when I put him in it. I also set the toy you gave me, outside of the cage, so it's hanging. When I have him out he'll just climb up his cage and on to his toy.

The only thing im having trouble with is getting him to eat anything other than seeds. I cut up carrots for him today, but he didn't want it. Did he like any specific thing when he was with you?

OMG Amber! :D congrats!! :D he's sooo cute!!! :D I love that "what?" pic of him :p Baybi screeches if I leave the room too, but not if you close the door :p since Baybi is a female, she doesn't talk much, but she can wolf whistle. :D I've heard males are better talkers than females... anyway! What a cutie!! sounds like he already loves you!!! CONGRATULATIONS... haha i'm so excited!!

Amber, he has never had carrots. He has had bits of boiled egg, green leaf lettuce, kale, raw brocolli and cauliflower and cheerios. He has also had some pasta and rice and Chex cereal. That's about it. They eat such small amounts that it is frustrating at times trying to feed them a variety because the stuff goes bad before you can use it all. I usually tear the lettuce into small pieces, the brocolli and cauliflower too. Some of the others might have good ideas of different things you can introduce as well.

Is he stepping up for you? I'm just thrilled with the pictures!!! :)

And is he being quiet for you at night? I do hope so! Don't hesitate to cover his cage with a towel or sheet if you need to. I think it is sweet that he calls for you! Roger and Milly do the same thing, especially in the day time.

Ill try some of the things you said. :)

Yep, he's been stepping up. Sometimes he'll get mad, and not want to, and peck at me. But most of the time he gets to step onto my finger when it's there.

And yes he has been quiet. I had a blanket for him that covered his cage in TN. but i don't use it now. Once he sees the lights are off and im not moving, he'll settle down and go to sleep. Now if im up and about and put him in for the night, he'll go crazy wanting out.

Amber, you might try shredding some carrots, rather than giving him chunks......just a thought. I started thinking that they have had shredded before. :o

Amber, from my experience with Popcorn and Muffin, they seem to be more comfortable when they're covered at night. Its actually more comfortable for me too, because that way, they don't wake up at the crack of dawn and start singing while we're still asleep. :p If you get him used to being covered, he will probably come to love it. My birds refuse to fall asleep at night without their cover. When I ask Muffin, "Want your blankey?" at night, she answers me with a sharp *CHEEP!!* That's her way of saying, "Yup...I want it!" :p She does the same thing when I ask her if she wants food when her bowls need to be filled. If I don't ask her about the cover at night, she screams and screams to remind me, and gets sooo happy when I finally cover her.

As for the carrots, my birds won't touch carrots if I give it to them in big pieces, but they LOVE it when I cut them into tiny pellet sized 'cubes'. The first veggie they came to love was raw brocolli, and its still their very favorite. Try feeding him peas too. (I defrost frozen raw peas and give it to them). My birds love it. He's still very young, so I know he'll come to love his veggies. The key is to be persistent, and eventually, he will eat everything. I know Logan fed him veggies when he was with her, so he should accept new foods faster than pet shop birds. :D

I've noticed that Bennie doesn't like his cage covered.. I did it in TN when I had a big enough blanket and he would scream and scream until I went over and peeked inside. The weird thing is, without a blanket, he's fine. He doesn't wake up early, although he USED to. When I first had him, I would wake up to the sound of screeching and whistling. But recently, he sleeps till I sleep, and goes to sleep when I do.

I also noticed yesterday that he was 'yawning' or gaping repeatedly. I know it's okay for tiels to yawn on occasion, but he was yawning one after another. I thought he had something in his throat, and I started panicking. :p But, what I wanted to know is if that's normal?

That's weird. My birds are the opposite. They scream and scream at night until they get their cover...LOL! Whatever he's comfortable with. ;)

As to the yawning constantly, birds often do that. It freaked me out the first time I saw my birds doing it, but from what I've read and seen, its very normal. They usually do it after preening, so I figure they probably get a feather or something stuck in their throat, and that's their way of trying to get it out. It usually stops if you leave them, but I can't stand to watch :p, so I usually put some water on a spoon and give it to them. Once they drink, the yawning is over. Its normal though, and nothing to worry about most of the time.

Amber, I can only think of one occasion that Bennie has ever even been covered (except for the week we were at the beach when they were still in the nest). He probably doesn't like it because he isn't accustomed to it at all. I see no reason for you to cover him. I think I would have only done it to settle them down or because I was worried about the cold. Roger and Milly are never covered.

Have you been able to hear him grinding his beak when he's going to sleep? I think only a bird owner would understand that sound, but it is the sweetest, most calm sound they make, I think. I love to listen to the "chorus" when they are settling down.

He'll settle into a routine soon, I'm sure. He, and you, have had lots of changes in the last week! :) Jessica, I am very, very happy that someone I trust has that little boy. Even the level of activity and noise at my house has settled down a bit since we are back to the original two now. So everyone is happy! :)

Hey. Just in case you want to make a note of it, Bennie's hatch date is 6/6/04. :) His "gotcha" day was December 30, 2004, right? :o
