I had noticed that Caleb had been squinting a little bit with his left eye for the past week now. Today the rim around his eye is a bit red. I put a little eye polysporin on it.
Why do you think his eye is irritated?

Not sure why the redness; a vet could probably tell you best.
Our kitten Abby has had a on-going problem with eye redness and drainage, and Prednisolone eye drops seem to really be helping. I think we will get this problem licked soon, maybe ask your vet about Prednisolone eye drops?

Is ther any discharge at all?
Jazz has always had eye problems. She had a bad eye infection with her URI as a kitten when we got her and every so many months she starts squinting and having a film over her eye. It usually goes away on it's own in a few days and as long as the film/discharge isn't green I don't worry too much.
Could he have scratched his eye?

My gang sometimes gets a hair, litter dust, lint in their eyes. I bought some eye wash at PetSmart. Couple squirts usually does the trick. Getting the "squirts" in sometimes is a real challenge. :D
I've used an ointment from vets that I had on hand that worked good but found eye wash did trick and I could save ointment for more serious problem(s).

Thanks for your replies! :)
There is some discharge, but there i also discharge in his other eye -- the difference is that the discharge in his other eye is in the corner. In this eye, it's spread all over the rim of his eye. His third eyelid is now starting to show a bit. I think I'll have to make a trip to the vet. :(

A vet visit is probably the best idea since the third eyelid is showing. Please keep us posted.

My cat goes through this periodically (like twice a year), really swollen, third eye over, the whole toot. Vet always called it "stress" or herpes. The new vet agrees. At one stage they treated it as a respiratory infection, but I don't think it was. We are busy with the ointment at this moment, such fun to administer

Caleb's eye is suddenly alot better. The rim is still a bit red, but the third eyelid has gone away and he isn't squinting :D
