Hi I have a german shepherd pit-bull mix and about 15 rose bushes in my yard.. and I was wondering if anyone else had this same problem where once a rose blooms the dog eats it and if so what you do to stop them?

Kiss your roses good bye. The only plant I have in my backyard is a tree (which one of my dogs climbs). I don't know if roses are harmful for dogs to eat, but my dogs all like to munch grass. We used to have a crate merdle(sp?), but the dogs munched that to a stump. So the backyard is what the dogs make of it. If we want a pretty yard, we have the front.

You could try some kind of chicken wire or fencing around the plants. A garden supply store like Home Depot would be able to show you what to use.

I totally agree with PitChick, if you really wanna keep your roses you should get something to put around them to protect them! Or just somehow put up a fence or play area restricted to the dog, or a tie-out of some sort! Away from the rose bushes!

Tell us how it works out!:D

well I just started to clicker train my dog last week .. taught her what the clicker was.. and then played a few games like 101 things to do with a box exc.. so now I figured I would try to teach her on command to eat the roses.. I don't know how well this will work being winter and all I don't have many left but once I do that then hopefully she will only do it on command..and if this works just to be nice I'll let her eat a rose or two here and there on command when they bloom again

LOL. What a GOOD idea! I never thought of that! Props and paws up! :D You're so nice to let her have at least 1 or 2 roses for her excellent behaviour...keep us posted!

My dog eats her way through the whole garden from strawberry patch to flower sprouts and even the leaves on our smallest ash tree. She even knows how to pull up carrots. We put up a small wooden garden retaining wall and taught her that it is off limits to go inside it. The vegetable and strawberry garden have chicken wire.
